Freezers? I would dump them both and buy a newer, more energy efficient one when I got to my destination. It would probably use less than half the energy of the older one.
Dump the upright yes, I hate that freezer, not to mention we rarely use it, it sits in the garage plugged in with very little in it. The chest freezer is another matter, we've been looking around and have yet to find another one as big as it is, I don't think they make them that size anymore. Biggest I've found is 24 cu ft and ours is 30, not to mention they cost nearly $900 now. Hard to justify replacing something that expensive that works just fine. Our friends are circling like vultures hoping we will decide to part with it....
The Alcan has been paved forever. Shouldn't be a problem on most any tire, except for the usual construction zones.
Well, then again, are 20s much good for anything?
We "inherited" a 59 year old working Philco freezer with this house. I'm afraid to plug it in - the dial on the electric meter would probably spin off to Canada.
In the news, talking about why kids aren't into cars, "Even the test drive is being reimagined, since young consumers find riding in a car with a stranger creepy, Scratch said."
The Alcan has been paved forever. Shouldn't be a problem on most any tire, except for the usual construction zones.
Yeah I know it is, I went on a horse haul about 4 years ago with a friend and I drove it myself twice about 6 years ago. Biggest problem is Cassiar Highway which I'd rather take since its shorter than taking the whole Alcan. The Cassiar tends to be a lot of tire puncturing gravel. Plus I think I'd rather have a little better tire than a sport truck tire for pulling a trailer, they are great for a nice empty truck, not sure how they'd be with any weight.
Hey, those old chest freezers, the kind you have to defrost are the BEST freezers! They don't freezer burn everything you put in there.
Hard to find and worth the extra power usage!
Absolutely!! Its the ONLY freezer I've ever met that I can leave something in for years and know it'll be just fine when I take it out....like the 80 lbs of moose meat we left in it for 6 years. The upright freezer will freezer burn bread after a week, its horrible.
That chest freezer will likely be with us forever, 25 years and it hasn't hiccuped yet, hubby says as long as he can get parts he'll keep it. Maybe we should be that way with cars.......would have a whole lot more money! Now I'm starting to sound Anti-CCB.......could I really be cured??
It's nice that it has the sport package, but it still has the "eyebrows" (those went away in '09).... I have an '06 E46 coupe, and I wouldn't trade for that one...
Ah, the Cassiar. Brings back fond memories (gravel and all). We're jonsing to drive up this summer but US gas prices were a killer on our last road trip down to see my Mom. Don't even want to think about Canadian prices in the Yukon. But it's been 7 years since we drove it.
The sidetrip to Hyder is fun, but maybe not if you're moving and hauling freezers.
OK, my advice would be to ignore this unless it REALLY bothers you. Or you can ask the dealer what it'll take to align things. If body work is required I would NOT have it worked on.
Probably happened by a careless worker inspecting the car as was being unloaded at port or something. Not hard to do. It would bug me too, I can't stand uneven panel gaps, especially non-parallel lines.
I was at a Volkswagen dealer to trade my 'piece of junk' '81 Olds Delta 88 diesel for a new '84 Volkswagen Golf diesel (good idea, I don't know).
Anyway, we went back and forth for a while and then I decided to leave. They had every change to meet the price I wanted and let me walk. A few hours later they called me back to say that they would take the price I wanted.
I was so 'pi$$ed' that I said forget it. If they knew that they could take the price why put me through all that. All of a sudden the price was good a few hours later? I let them keep it. And, it was the Tuxedo edition as I recall.... had an interesting interior.
I ended up trading for a '84 Peugeot 505 STI (black with mink leather). Beautiful car and trouble free until 3 yrs and 48,000 miles the air started to blow warm.... bought a '87 Nissan Maxima!

found this bad boy at the local dealer. No idea how the price plays out, and I don't know if it is certified (did not say so, but hard to imagine that a 2008 with 36K isn't).
Actually, based on the carfax, it is still under factory warranty, with an inservice date it seems in 6/2008.
I could get used to it I am sure! all for the price of a low level Camry.
There is a cost to this and it only adds to the price of a used car. A lot of people consider certification to be unnecessary and a waste of money providing the used car is a nice one.
The "Warranty People" are the only people that find value.
I know I'm not one of those people. I wold rather pay less for the car and take my chances.
I can't usually tell off the computer. Would have to see it in person, in natural light.
But, there are quite a few out there usually, that one just happened to be a late in the year car (more warranty left) with lower than normal miles.
It was certified based on carfax, I think they just didn't note it on the dealer site (maybe because it is still under factory BtoB until November).
I do like other colors better. The dark/rust red, dark blues, etc.
Still, nice discount for a car that must have had an original MSRP well north of 45K.
now, if I could convince my wife that was a good way to go instead of getting an SUV type (and of course, likely keeping the minivan as the spare car!)
Still don't need a 3rd car until the end of the year, so I will revisit the question at that time.
My son and I are chomping at the bit too; we made a bit of money buying tickets to the Regional games in Louisville and flipping them to some Wildcat fans on eBay. Well, for me but I have to convince her it is for her, then take it away.
Too soon really though. I shouldn't even be looking now, since I have no need for another car until late in the year (an additional one), and that is when we likely will replace the van if we can swing that too. Otherwise, I will get something then and the van will hang around a while longer.
I am finding the trip computer in the Volvo (first time I have had one of them) interesting. Very accurate (within a few 1/10ths on MPG), and since I have had the car, I am averaging 20 MPH. So obviously I don't drive very fast very often!
Congrats! Closing in on a year with my 328i coupe and love it!

I have a co-worker at the pizza place who is thinking of replacing their current car with a used Toyota Prius.
The current car is a 2003 Nissan Sentra with close to 170K on it. Transmission is starting to slip a little, and they are at a point where it may not make sense to invest any additional money to keep it running well.
There isn't a huge budget for anything newer; the search has turned up this.
Other than the obvious (113K miles for an '05!), what else should they be looking for? What is the battery lifespan? The rationale is that by effectively doubling the mileage, they can halve the fuel cost.
They figure they can get the dealer down to $10K for the Prius, and they've been given a ballpark estimate of $2K trade in value for the Sentra.
Here's the deal .. about 95% of the driving done for pizza delivery in our town is urban, speed limit 45MPH or under, lots of traffic signals and stop signs. Perfect environment for a hybrid to excel.
The idea is that the payment for the Prius (figure $300/mo) would be somewhat offset by the reduced gas purchases. The cars listed above would have both the payment and similar real-world mileage to the Sentra, so no real reduction in gas costs.
I saw the Prius C at the auto show on Saturday (breld, I didn't check Edmunds until it was too late, sorry I missed you) and it's pretty small in both the back seat and the luggage area for no real improvement in mileage.
I did find some Prii with less miles that run between $12-15K, but not sure if their budget can stretch that far.
So, does anyone have feedback on long-term issues with the Prius?
That Prius would do about $7k-$7500 at auction. An '05 Civic Hybrid with 100k miles would be about $2k cheaper. A 4-door Echo about $3k less.
I see 2 Civics in your neck of the woods on autotrader. Both '04s. One with 94k listed at $9k that she/he should be able to get for $8k. And one with 117k listed for $7500, which $7k should probably buy.
If he/she wants to drive a little further, there is an '05 with 96k that $7500-$8k would be a fair deal on.
And, yes, the '04s and '05s are going for the same money at auction. I have no idea why.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
No Hondas .. don't know why, but they have a bias against them.
I'm not here looking for alternatives .. they've decided on a Prius, and I'm trying to find the best used example for them and to figure out what kind of issues they may have as the miles increase.
The '06 with 77K for $12,500 looks to be a pretty good mix of miles and price. If $11,500 is the right number that should fit into their budget with the trade.
People on a tight budget should always be open to alternatives .... also interpreted as "beggars can't be choosers." But, hey, it is their money to waste, of course.

The warranty on the battery is eight-years or 100,000-mile warranty so if it goes, figure ~$3,000 for a replacement. Some transmissions cost that much to fix (maybe not for the slipping Sentra?), but battery life really has been much of an issue for Prii. Some bad ones here and there but you don't really see too many posts about them. Apparently third party batteries can be had for $1,300 now, per the Christian Science Monitor.
People on a tight budget should always be open to alternatives .... also interpreted as "beggars can't be choosers." But, hey, it is their money to waste, of course.
q - you're not wrong, but it's not my place to suggest what they should get. FWIW, this person also has a thing for the Nissan Xterra, which is totally going in the wrong direction.
corvette / steve - I've looked at the Hybrid board here at Edmunds and most of the complaints are for the Civic Hybrid, not the Prius. So, I would agree that the battery life hasn't been that much of an issue.
The only downside of the 77K / $12,500 Prius is that the dealer is a lot farther away than the 113K / $12K one.
Thanks, all. I'll keep you posted as to how this plays out.
That's what I thought too, but from my link, "Cinda Gobeille had to garage her Toyota Prius when the battery gave out after a healthy life of 10 years and 144,000 miles. The car looks great, she says. But without a new battery, which dealers say will cost up to $4,200, her hybrid simply won't turn on."
Wonder if her regular battery is dead and she just can't unlock the doors? :shades:
The jury is still out on whether we will keep it. Only problem found so far is an out brake light bulb. Even in stop and go traffic I averaged 22 mpg on the way home.
A reporter is hoping to interview car-shoppers under 34 years old to learn whether they are interested in the new "near-premium" offerings from Acura, Audi, Buick and Lexus. Was chatting up the wife last night, extolling the virtues of a BMW sedan over a CUV. She made a comment about getting that and keeping the van until my daughter graduates (6 years from now). I thought she was kidding (well, being sarcastic!). This even at dinner she comes out with "I told you we could get that and keep the van". Apparently she was serious on some level. So might just have to keep that option open when the time comes (and by year end, the 2009 no-eyebrow models will be the main CPO!).
of course, there was a bit of debate about who would drive the van and who would get bimmer...
Oh, forgot the rest of my post. I may not actually need a car.
Most likely, my job will officially become work from home soon (running out of seats in the building, and I don't really have to be on site it seems). Plus, i am only getting a car because my Daughter will be able to drive on he own and taking mine.
I realized though that outside of commuting, most of my driving is running her all over the place. Without those 2 activities, my car may sit for days at a time, and do 25 miles/week, especially if my wife has something nice and new that I like to drive! So even keeping the van would not make much difference.
Maybe I could get a 2-fer on an electric car with Farmer?
Was a Dodge Colt considered near-premium? though hard to imagine so considering it did not have AC. Or power windows. Or even power steering. Maybe power brakes, but won't swear to that...

I bet when gas was $2.50 this was a $6-8000 car.
Gas prices soar and then so do Prius prices. $12k seems ridiculous when a brand new Prius C stickers for $19k to start.
Of course those have markups and good luck finding a base model.
Still, $12k for 113k miles? Seems way high to me.
