but given that I just had the contractor in to look over the bathroom to supply the estimate, the car budget (not just mine, but the wife's too!) could be taking another hit.
after this year, we really have to stop spending money. Basically getting all the pain over with at one shot.
thanks. we are getting everything through a local guy (that sourced a lot of last years projects) who seems to be reasonable. Plus it is easy, since he does all the work!
really trying to keep this job basic. so a tub, toilet, vanity and straight forward faucets
actually, I do have a question about tubs. Would you go with fiberglass (or whatever the acrylic is these days), porcelain coated steel, or porcelain coated cast iron (I think those are the choices)?
the bathworks guy recommended the cast iron, if you want to do it "right" (and because he does not have to carry it up the stairs). The contractor said you could save money going with steel. Are there pros and cons to sway the decision (and when in doubt, I go with cheaper!)
I am deep into the "to heck with it, we went this far and are going to do it eventually, so get it all over with at one time" way of operating.
and with the remodeling, you always get to the point where the part you did not do looks incredibly seedy compared to the new part. And after doing 2/3 baths, the difference to the hall (aka the Princesses bathroom) one is amazing.
I'm no expert, but my personal opinion is that the answer depends on the function and installation. Will it actually be used as a tub? Or is it just a shower? If it is just a tub and you have a separate shower stall, will it actually be used?
Essentially, I don't see the point to getting something more expensive if it won't serve a function. Kind of like buying a Ferrari to commute 5 miles to work on busy city streets.

Porcelain Coated cast iron without question. I assume the tub is 5 feet? Go with the Kohler K316 or K317. They sell for like $315 or $325 @ Home Depot. It is heavy, but nowhere near the weight of the "old time cast iron bath tubs.". Cast iron tubs are better insulated & will keep water temps warmer longer.
Porcelain on Steel Bathtubs are very light & economical (I sell them for $118.75), but they are not for your house. With a steel tub, it will sound like rain hitting a skylight in the room underneath.
I'm not a fan of fiberglass tubs. Very light, but also not cheap.
Make sure you go with a Gerber Bathtub Drain.
Good luck!

Thanks. the write-up just said Kohler 5' tub and just lists the drain as "drain". when we go back in I will ask for details. He only has nice stuff though.
I will stick with the cast iron. The contractor did say that the sound was a big difference, and installing steel was easier, but not a huge issue. They might just have to do a little more opening up of the wall to wrestle it in.
this is also a hall bath with just a tub. We normally use it for showers, not taking baths, but nice to have it work better for that.
Am typing this at my parents house ... finished my 2 day 1100 mile drive around noon today. Did about 680 miles yesterday - Castle Rock to Mesquite, NV - and the rest this morning. Averaged about 30 MPG in the ION.
Random observations from the trip:
My tuckus is sore. LA traffic sucks. Try to time your bladder relief with your gas stops so you don't end up paying $4.099 at a gas station in some wide spot in the road on I-15 in CA. The scenery in Utah is still beautiful. I forgot smoking is still allowed at casinos in Nevada. GasBuddy is a great iPhone app.
well, if I don't buy anything before it sells, we will only have 3 cars between us, believe it or not. The '08 Chrysler T&C, '08 135i, and '86 300E.
So someone contacted me through Craigs offering up his 2000 Passat V6 5-speed wagon. ehhh... no thanks. Not that I needed to be reminded of their quality, but in just the 2 years he's owned it, and with a total of only 82k miles, he's had to replace both cats, the clutch, window regulator, door lock mechanism, rear hatch switch. Oh, and he claims to get 34mpg highway.

As I related in the "Stories From the Sales Frontlines" topic:
The first vehicle we landed on was a 2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman at the local Audi dealer. One owner, 14,000 miles. We ended up $500 apart. We were getting ready to leave for vacation so my wife and I decided to wait until we got back from vacation to take any further action(I called our salesperson and told her that as well).
While on vacation my wife saw an article about the Nissan Rogue, so we took a brief foray into Extreme Practicality Mode. As I mentioned one week ago I tried the "Edmunds Free Dealer Quote" feature; the result was no quotes whatsoever. But I did get a batch of phone calls -even though I selected e-mail as my "Preferred method of contact"- inviting me to come down and take a test drive...
Last Friday(before we returned home) the Audi dealer sold the Mini. Oh well...
So... last Monday we went to shop at the local MINI dealer. This did not help the case for the Countryman; not many were equipped the way we wanted and the Sales Manager was and arrogant jerk. Just one example: our salesman had found a car that was equipped the way we wanted, but it was at the body shop due to hail damage- and wouldn't be ready for another week. He said he'd check with the manager to see how much the car would be discounted due to the damage. The answer? "The car was not damaged enough to justify a discount from MSRP." Seriously??? The final downer was the salesperson's forthright admission that the service department was extremely busy and that 7-10 days was the common waiting period to have your Mini serviced :surprise:
Tuesday we went to the BMW dealer to check out a Audi A3 TDI and a 2008 328i wagon. Both cars had just sold. But sitting on the showroom floor was a one owner CPO 2009 328i; Crimson Red/Beige leather, 24,300 miles. We both liked it, but our salesperson wasn't there; we left a message and drove home. On a whim we decided to cruise by the Audi dealer- and sitting out in front was the "Sold" Countryman...

Tuesday I had a hearing in Owen County(@75 miles away) so we decided that my wife would call the Audi dealer about the Mini and I would stop by the BMW dealer and talk with our salesperson. My wife had a hard time getting in touch with the Audi salesperson but she finally learned that the car HAD sold but the buyer returned it because "it just wasn't a good fit". What the heck- he couldn't figure that out from a test drive? So my wife asks for a price and is quoted a number that is $300 more than their original offer.
Meanwhile, I stop by the BMW dealer and my salesperson comes up with a number that is $1,500 off the advertised price; I had performed a 500 mile search on both AutoTrader.com and Cars.com and found that every other 2009 328i CPO with similar miles was going for $1,000-$4,000 more than my dealer's asking price. And did I mention that out of the 60 cars I looked at all but seven were either black, white, gray or silver?
My wife and I discussed it at some length and we decided to go with the BMW. My wife and I really liked the Mini's offbeat character and its extremely compact size, but we concluded that long term reliability(5-7 years and 130,000 to 150,000 miles) was a big question mark- and we were a bit put off by the whole Mini dealer experience.
So I called my salesperson and asked him to knock another $500 off and he came back with $250 off; I said "Sold!" With the 328i we also have the new car warranty in effect for 1 year and 27,000 miles- with the CPO coverage adding two more years and another 50,000 miles. Herewith a few pictures:
While I wish it had the Sport package and Xenons, my wife is perfectly happy with it just as it is. And I'm betting that adding Phillips Xtreme Power or Osram Rallye 65w H7 bulbs will improve the headlamps more than a bit. It looks, drives, and smells like new, and I do like the RWD and the normally aspirated inline six.
Next up: What car should I sell to bring the fleet back down to five cars?

I like the Protege a lot, but way too expensive. Basically asking you to even trade the 540.. That seems like strong Pro5 money. But for the right price, would work for me.
the BMW? Like the color. But some random place in Philly? Those miles on an AWD? After an engine swap by some unknown entity, now trying to dump it?
no red flags there!
oh, I see you did the Ebay as a classified ad, not an auction. You expect us to have to email you lowball offers instead of putting bids in?
Yeah, I think the 32mpg is pretty much impossible for a normal driver.
EPA on these puppies is 26 highway, if I recall, and I think the real-world mileage threads were full of people who had a hard time pulling the EPA numbers with their Subie turbos. I too call BS on 32mpg.
What's it worth? Well, that depends on the hit in question. As long as there are no outstanding issues, it would probably do around $11k-$11500 at dealer auction. Figure maybe $10,500 trade-in. Soooo... private party transaction? $12k-$12500.
Didn't one with similar miles actually go across the block in Texas in the $13s? (that one I posted about a few weeks ago in Chicago) Granted, this one doesn't look in as good a shape, so the target would definitely need to be set a bit lower.
So as I posted recently, that Passat TDI caught my interest and had me thinking about the advantages of the large comfy car with the great gas mileage.
Well took my wife with me over our lunch hour today to show her the Passat, and thought we'd also check out a recent model A4 Avant next door at the Audi dealer (I mean, hey, we like wagons ). That A4 wasn't equipped all that well and was sort of blah, but there was a CPO '12 A4 sedan loaded up with a sport package and all the goodies, so we took that out. After that test drive I am ready to run numbers and see what it would look like to trade in the GTI for that.
We still went next door to look at the Passat but now are underwhelmed with it.
My wife pointed out that when it comes to car shopping, all the "practical" reasons are mere justifications for getting what our hearts want. I mean, I started out this whole series of events with the great gas mileage of the Passat as a motivation, and now am simply looking at a nicer, sportier VW (Audi). She said "get what you want, and you can use all those practical reasons to tell other people why you did it." I love her.
Anyway, here's where we landed:
1) For the value we'd get out of the 530i, it's just not worth giving it up. It's too nice, classic and rare and thus, worth much more to us than the $10-12k we could possibly sell it for. It was a great find, and it's a keeper.
2) We like the GTI much more than the Passat - what we would gain in MPG and size in the Passat is not nearly enough to make up for the fun and character of the GTI.
3) The A4, on the other hand, would certainly be a nice upgrade to the GTI - offering as much sporty character along with a nice automatic for the commute. And I'm not saying it's necessary by any means, but the quattro wouldn't be a bad thing here in Denver.
So, just have to figure how much it's worth to us for the upgrade.
So it's a very loaded up model - previous exec car. "Prestige" package (I'm still learning what that means) - navigation, sport package, blind spot monitoring, etc.
About 10k miles and CPO. My amateur research on kbb.com makes it look like trade is around mid-$30's on it, so given the CPO, maybe $38-39k?
But, assuming you are OK with Tan (I think I like it), pretty loaded. and 25K for a 2010, with only 29,000 miles , does not sound bad.
Trying to convince my wife that we should get this instead of a small SUV. Not working yet. because I don't want to keep the van, and she somehow thinks that she would get stuck with it.
But, the concept would be that this would become her car, and the primary travel car, though with serious cargo carrying limitations. Unless we ditch the kids. I would then add my spare car, getting something in the SUV/box category, for when we need a home depot run or some such. The bigger issue is when we travel out of state for Christmas, but what the heck, that is once a year. Running to the shore for summer vacation, just take 2 cars!

Rated @ 25 highway. That's a joke. I average just about 20.5 with my '11 328xi. I also have a hard time keeping the speedo below 80 & sit in some serious bumper to bumper traffic some days (last night it took me 1 hr 20 minutes to go 30 miles).
Once after a Yankees game, I filled up & pretty much had the cruise set at 65 for my entire way home & the OBC showed 27.5 average.

I'd say they kept it a long time for a service loaner, though it looks like they put it up for sale about a year ago.... and, then... just kept using it...
Appears to have an in-service date of March, 2010.. If that's accurate, you'd have 20 months of warranty and maintenance..
Nice option package for you... light interior, premium, heated seats, heated steering wheel, AWD... No big tires... It isn't missing much.. xenons, maybe.. but, that isn't a big deal..
Have to grab those inline sixes before they are all gone...
it was well equipped. Surprised to see that for a service loaner, but I bet it had to do with sitting on the lot for a while (probably not a high demand color).
Those look kind of boring on a lot with all the other colors, but it would be an attractive car in your driveway..
Seriously... The '09-'11 sedans with the facelifted front end are great looking.... and, while I normally shy away from AWD, the E90s are a really great driving car.... that's what I almost always end up with for a loaner..
I can't stand the beige interior, but I know you love it.. what's not to like? That car has been around for quite awhile.... might be worth a lowball offer... (verify the in-service date)
The 25 is for the AWD models (mine is AWD, roadburner's is RWD) which are heavier than their RWD counterparts. The AWD system weighs more, the AWD cars have steel front control arms as opposed to Aluminum on the RWD models, their is also a loss of efficiency with the AWD models as there is always a small amount of power (5%?) routed through the front wheels. Correct me if I'm wrong Roadburner.

Glad to see most of the early members are still actively at it :-)
I guess I can consider myself a candidate..... you be the judge!!

That bimmer cheap enough could still be enticing.
The Pro is worth maybe $3500 at the block, so he's not trying to kill anyone with the asking price, but its $1500 more than I'd want to pay.

I think it would be enticing with a good PPI and if you could do the work yourself on it (which I know you can, Q).
I'm with stick though, for the average consumer, I'd avoid it with that engine swap.
Well took my wife with me over our lunch hour today to show her the Passat, and thought we'd also check out a recent model A4 Avant next door at the Audi dealer (I mean, hey, we like wagons

Q - what do you think on pricing?

Not the most exciting, but certainly easy to keep clean. My 99 S10 is that color and never looks dirty.
Looks like a nice car. Normal size wheels, clean and AWD. Is that MPG # correct? Only 25 highway? Seems low.
