Must be more than 5. Breld alone has done that.

I hope to get one this year. Once both kids are gone I will try to implement my plan if selling the Volvo and TL and getting replacement. At least even with a spare no more cars in the road in a few weeks when we drop to 3 cars here.

Not quite yet, but the year isn't over yet! According to the official list our current tally is 12. That does not include Steve's new clunker. :p

Not ready to punch just yet, but I had a wavering moment on Sunday. I tried to roll down the windows on my 2000 Park Ave and the left rear one wouldn't budge.

One logical/similar replacement would be a 2012-2013 Impala LTZ. In 2012, the Impala got upgraded to the 3.6 liter direct injection V6 and 6-speed automatic, so it should be quite the sleeper. The LTZ is the loaded one. They are very old school, low tech (old platform, Bluetooth but no audio streaming), and relatively cheap on the used market. And you should be able to pick up a used 2014 (or eventually) 2015 or 2016 model, as they are still selling it to fleets as the Impala Limited.

I'm gonna make punch in a couple of months. I want a 4X4 of some sort to allow me go get further way from the crowds when I camp. I got hooked while camping with my brother. He as a 1996 Land Cruiser with tons of mods that make it a billy goat. Since I don't have family I was thinking some something smaller ... like an Xterra or Tacoma. It would be quite used, and require a few grand in aftermarket.

GTI is high on the list... My son wants me to get something nicer, so he can have my car... If I get the GTI, we'll probably split time between that and my car... That's sort of what we've been doing with the Infiniti... except for the two weeks after his grades come in.. (then, he doesn't get to drive my car, at all). :(

Speaking of pending punches, I spent a little time at lunch visiting the Lexus dealership, where I only sat in the ES350. Then I also took a quick test drive of the used 528xi I'm considering.

Not as clear as you'd think it would be, particularly considering my history and love of BMWs. Or maybe it's that history that makes me want to try something different.

The AWD and general more masculine identity has me leaning toward the BMW, but I can't deny the comfort of the ES350. I really like that interior. And again, this all reflects a distinct shift in my priorities as I've finally recognized how much I value comfort in my 60 -100 mile daily grind.

Plus, I noted earlier today that I'm gonna turn 10,000 miles this month in my Passat (after barely 6 months of ownership). There's something about piling on the miles on a Lexus that sits better with me than doing the same in a BMW. Not so much from a maintenance perspective, but more from a resale perspective.

Ideally, I'd kinda like the Lexus for the daily grind, and have an older BMW (or VW GTI or something like that) as a fun car. Right now, I'm putting the entire car budget into this one car, but down the road (like maybe next year), we could probably work something like a used GTI or 3-series. Which would be nice for my wife too, since she's also fallen victim to the comfort of an automatic.

The W-body Impala really doesn't register on my radar, because, published specs be damned, they're just too small inside for my tastes. I don't know what GM did to it, but in that 2006 restyle, they managed to make it so cramped that, when I put the seat back to where I'm comfortable, you can not get anybody in the seat behind me, unless it's an infant in a car seat, or a double-leg amputee. I've tried sitting in the back seat of them, and I actually have to duck, because my head hits the ceiling. On the plus side, the front seat is adequate for me. However, the last time I had to drive one, I noticed how poor visibility to the rear is.

If I was going to go with a fairly recent used GM car, I'd go with a Buick Lucerne, or maybe a Pontiac G8. Going brand-new, I think it would be a tossup between a Charger or an Impala. I like the color choices on the Impala and its interior, and find the exterior style to be pleasing enough. But I also like the more aggressive muscular look of the Charger. Plus, around here at least, it seems like they're almost giving them away. The dealer I bought my Ram from has a stripped down R/T model for around $23K. The interior is about the grade of a '73 Chevy Bel Air, but you're also getting the Hemi for about the price of a 4-cyl Impala!

  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,297

I never noticed the W-body's interior being small. It seems a lot larger than the Malibu of the same era. Then again, I'm short, so something like a Passat feels like a long wheelbase Town Car.

My main beef with the W-body is back seat legroom. Most other dimensions are okay, although with the 2006 and later Impala, I swear they did something to reduce back seat headroom compared to 2000-2005. As long as I'm the one driving the car, I'm okay, but trust me, you wouldn't want to sit behind me!

As for the Passat, it's been awhile since I've been in one, and I don't think I've sat in the latest edition. But one of my friends used to have the "2001.5" model, and for a car that wasn't all that huge overall, it was very space efficient, I thought, and made good use of its interior room. It wasn't a very wide car, but legroom seemed decent.

I sat in a 2014 Impala at the DC auto show, and that was one of the few cars where I did NOT have to put the front seat back as far as it would go. When I did, it was actually too far back for my tastes, and that almost never happens with me.

Wife and I have been discussing my car options a lot, and we had an interesting discussion regarding our recent direction away from BMW, particularly my current consideration of a Lexus of all things.

What we already knew, but confirmed, was that we certainly didn't buy BMWs for the brand itself, though we do like the styling. For what we wanted to drive, there just wasn't much else that compared - other than her X3, our choices were very specific: a manual trannie E60, the manual sport E39, most recently the pair of manual m-sport E90s, and even the 318ti. I think most would agree for those choices, there's not much else that really compares from a driving dynamics perspective.

But two things are influencing the decisions now - 1) our shift toward more of a comfortable commuting car and 2) Current BMWs convergence, if you will, toward mainstream.

So basically, now that my priorities are more for a commuting vehicle offering comfort and roominess over sport, the BMWs don't offer a distinct advantage. For that matter, even if sport was a priority, the current BMWs still don't necessarily meet that criteria. It's not that we don't still love the current BMWs, they just don't seem as differentiated as they once were.

So, the point of our discussion last night? The Lexus may be a great choice for the commuting car - offers the same, if not better, comfort and roominess than the 5-series and 3 GT, but with at least some advantage in long-term reliability and resale.

And then at next year's bonus time - an E46 ZHP for a fun car. ;) That was my wife's suggestion - she's pretty great.

I have become fixated on a PU truck again when I sell off my fleet of old sedans after my daughter goes to college. Pretty sure I really don't need one. Probably related to looking at moving my son soon, getting my daughter off to college, and having made about 3 trips in the RDX for bags of mulch recently.

would probably grow tired of it quickly. And really doubt I would be happy with something as big as 1/2 tons are today. If Ford brought that new Ranger over, I would seriously take a look.

We might replace the van. I dunno. I keep "fixing" the AC and it keeps breaking. First time, found a leaking O-ring. Replaced, refilled, lasted 2 days. Then found the expansion valve leaking. 10 hours of hard labor, replaced valve and evaporator while had the dash out anyway, refilled, lasted nearly 2 weeks this time. I haven't tested it myself, but wife said its dead. Told her we'll put dye in the system and see what happens, but if the leak doesn't show itself, might just recharge it and trade it. Would I do that JUST for AC? No. But it has 90k miles and is due for a bunch of stuff (brakes, trans fluid, shocks, etc), so this is kind of a "last straw" situation.

I'm liking our "new" 09 Grand Caravan but I'm curious to see how the AC does in New Mexico. We may take some stuff out next week to put in storage. The AC on the Quest died (leak in a tube) so driving both vans out is off the table.

We keep telling ourselves that this is just a place-holder vehicle but knowing us, taking it to 200k could be in the cards. It's already got 125,000 on it though. Two punches in a year's time would really shock my system though, lol.

Oh, I sold the Outback last week so we're back to two cars. Funny, I put it on craigslist and got about four bites and only one local party. Then I put a sign on it and parked it at the in-law's house, which is on a busier street, and got a call within an hour. Guy then bought it after a long test drive (and after going home to raid his strongbox - he wasn't the type that's fond of banks).

  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,740

oh, so you bought that one. I meant to ask you. Good luck with it.
Wife really won't consider anything else. I'm trying to convince her that a brand new loaded Grand Caravan for $5k less than a similar T&C is a good deal. She seems to think the T&C is THAT much nicer. Ugh.

The new GC seems like a good deal. Truecar shows I could get an RT with Nav and dual Blu-ray for $28,500. Or, what I'd really prefer just because it isn't all black inside, a 30th anniversary with all the add-ons for $28k.

Thanks! If I take off the cash the Subaru brought, I figure I'm into it for around $7,000, so I can afford a repair here or there. It was $10.5k OTD. Love the Stow n Go. And it's silver so it should reflect some of the sunshine.

I yak with another Quest owner who used to be more active on Edmunds. Well, he's an ex Quest owner, having just traded his van for a Soul. He had a lot more issues with his van than we did. We're birds of a feather though - there's a white Soul Primo with sunroof that's calling our name down in lower Michigan, but maybe next year.

It's weird about cars with For Sale signs.. If I pass one in my local area, I'm suddenly interested, but I'm not sure why... A friend of mine was all over an Audi A4 convertible, a couple of years ago.. I said, "seems pricy, have you looked for other ones in the area for sale?". Nope, saw that one down the street while running, and couldn't get off of it. He is still driving it.

Sounds like a new van punch is not too far in your future. Good luck. These have some interesting incentives:

    Dodge Grand Caravan:

    • $2,000 Customer Cash (not available with 0% - 1.9% financing)
    • $3,000 Lease Cash if you lease with another lender that's NOT Chrysler Capital
    • $1,000 Minivan Bonus Cash
    • $1,000 Conquest Cash
    • 0% for up to 60 months or 1.9% for 72 months
    • $500 Leasing Bonus Cash

    Chrysler Town & Country

    • $2,250 Customer Cash (not available with cheapo financing)
    • $1,000 Conquest Cash
    • $500 Trade Assistance
    • $7,500 Lease Cash if you lease with another lender that's NOT Chrysler Capital
    • $2,000 Minivan Bonus Cash
    • $500 Bonus Cash
    • 0% for 60 months or 1.9% for 72 months
    • $750 Lease Cash

The two vans MIGHT not be as far off price wise as you think. You'll have to keep us in the loop & let us know what happens. Good luck!

$7500 lease cash on the T&C sounds amazing. Even if the third-party lease residuals/money factors are terrible, you could take the lease cash and buy out the lease a month or two later.

    anybody feeling lucky?

For years there has been a Jag S type living at a house just outside my neighborhood, so I drive by it all the time. Yesterday, it was by the road, with a 4 sale sign up. So, I stopped today to browse. First off, it is a pretty bright (tomato?) red. odd color for one. But looks to be very well kept.

had a nice long list of options taped to the window. It is a V8 VDP, and seemed to have everything available on it. Must have cost a bundle new.'

but what was left out was such minor details as year, miles and price. But they did list tire size and # of speakers (probably much more important!)

curious for the deets, just not enough to call and ask.

I was helping a customer load up some 4" cast iron pipe into their previous body style (2010 - 2011 ish) Odyssey Touring. The functionality & versatility of the minivan is amazing. We folded the 3rd row flat, removed the middle seat of the 2nd row & slid the pipe right through the middle. No problem. That pipe wouldn't fit in our Pilot. Plus the lower step in height would make it easier to load up the kids. They definitely have to climb up into the Pilot. My wife who is 5'4" tall says it is somewhat difficult to buckle the kids in as she has to stand on her tip toes & reach over. Plus access to the 3rd row is to climb over the 2nd row. I can see why everyone who has a minivan loves it.

That being said, I know that Siennas & Odysseys are great vehicles, but the Chrysler & Dodge minivans give you SO much more for A LOT less. It is amazing what you can get in a Grand Caravan for what an Odyssey LX stickers for.

nyccarguy, where did you get those numbers? I agree, the 7500 lease cash could really make the deal. Do you know which of the other items on the list might stack with that? I mean, if Customer Cash, Conquest Cash, Bonus Cash, and that lease money all stack, I could be looking at a $43k Limited for $27k!

At the same time... I have discovered this and might have to wait for it.

  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,740

yeah, the stowaway seats of the chrysler is a huge advantage, but appears that those Kia seats can slide pretty much up against the first row, so that's pretty cool and would suffice 99.99% of the time. I've only ever stowed a 2nd row seat maybe 3 times in 3 years and both seats just once.

That's how our old Quest worked. We tossed the middle seat entirely and could slide the back seat to the middle (that's where it usually lived, save a few times when we did the limo seating. :) ). It also folded so it wasn't too bad when moved all the way forward. Took it out entirely for one long trip and that was a pain.

wow that Kia is nice. Doesn't do me much good since I drive, but my daughter would kill for those reclining seats!

Steve, I had the same vintage quest as you. removing the middle row captains chairs was a huge pain, but when out, sliding the rear bench up was quite handy. used to do that on trips to the beach when I needed the cargo space more than extra people room.
