And yes, I'm liking this new Golf/GTI too. What I'm really anxious to see is the new sportwagon coming out next year.
Noticed today a couple local dealers have a new GTI on their lots (at least they've posted real pics on the website). Kinda would like to go look, but not sure if it would stop there. The problem with looking and considering these Lexus and BMW models is something like a GTI would all of a sudden seem like a bargain!
Thanks for that.... I'm pretty sure the one I saw was an SE... must have mis-read the window sticker, because I could swear it wasn't leather.. If it is, not a bad price at $28,800 with destination..
KBB is usually way high for average retail and trade-in. It will. likely sell for close to that number because it is a very desirable car. KBB cpo retail is $21500. That is at least 2k too high maybe 3k, The market for hybrids has tanked. Trade in is 14-15K.
Since we are on the topic of VWs. Is it me or does VW's new website absolutely STINK? There's no "build your own" feature. You now pick you colors & options, then they automatically tell you what the local inventory is. I happened to pick the blue color for the Passat, So they only showed SE w/ sunroofs that were available. But what if I want to see how much "my" Passat SE w/ Sunroof & Nav cost?

A little confused - not sure what vehicle you're referring to Jay?
In any case, I'm with you that KBB (and other similar pricing guides) don't necessarily reflect accurate trade values. But I do find it useful to find relative values - i.e., when I'm trading a car for a used car, I find it helpful to use a consistent resource to estimate a fair "difference" number. If KBB is high on a value, it generally will be consistently across different cars.
Having said that, I have found that the low end of KBB trade values tend to be fairly consistent with feedback from folks such as qbrozen, when I have asked. And if a dealer is offering a car for KBB trade, it's probably a pretty good deal - not necessarily what they paid for it, but a good deal.
It's nice to have the resources to refer to, but you're right - certainly don't want to take them as gospel by any means.
A lot of the EAG inventory is very pricey; as for this Touring, maybe a bit over market. The thing is, '02 prices are starting to take off- based on what I'm reading in some of the classic car magazines from both sides of the Atlantic. If you held onto this car for 5-10 years you probably wouldn't lose any money...

I went to the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance this weekend. My first Concours. Fabulous, my head almost exploded about a dozen times. I kept thinking, "If I empty my 401k, I can pick up that beyond gorgeous 1956 Jag XK140. Or, (insert stunning, expensive big boy toy here)..." Wayne Carini was there, 26 new CCC shows being created and negotiating a 5 year deal for more. Told funny story about when the Prince of Kuwait called him, he thought it was a practical joke! Of course, it wasn't and he ended up in Kuwait and another episode for his show.

Price is optimistic by maybe a few grand. It's on the tail end of wiring harness problems, so I would want the shop to attest it doesn't need one - if not, deduct a few more grand. Nice cars though, timeless design, a modern classic. I linked to a similar mileage car listed locally a couple weeks ago, I think they wanted around 15K for it. Those were ~80K or so when new, in the dollars of those days.
Cool that you got to see Carini, and that the show is being continued, been awhile since I have seen a new episode. I am sure Greenwich has some amazing stuff, many of Carini's clients are in that area, suburbia for the banksters.

Thanks, it was in a parking lot outside the Concours with a for sale sign (also, a '91 red Alfa Spider Veloce, MB 280sl) and the shop's cards. Which is here in Mass. Interesting, green with white, very delicate pinstriping. The pinstripe was interrupted on the gas filler door with an inscription, I think it said, "(four hearts) Glenn." The name, Glenn, was easy to read, but the hieroglyphs prior to the name were difficult to decipher. I guess a gorgeous, sunny day surrounded by stunning automobiles stirred the wanna be chronic car buyer in me. Greenwich was a lovely host.

15K might end up being the depreciation floor for genuinely nice low mileage examples. They don't seem to be going lower. For those and cars like the 500E, this might be the time to buy. Hopefully the pinstriping could be buffed off - some US market cars got tape striping too, I'd remove it asap.
280SLs have done well in the market, nice ones moving past 50K.

Yes, it has been many a year since I worked in Greenwich/Stamford. Much development in Stamford and Westport since I haunted Fairfield County. But, nice to see a few of the old time restaurants still around: Dinner at John's Best Pizza and Jordans. And, ice cream at Stew's!
Beyond the car show, Greenwich is just a mini-Europe, car wise. Notably the big three Germans everywhere. KIids in 911 and BMW coupes common site. Stuck my head in Carriage House Motor Cars as I walked to/from Greenwich Ave for lunch breaks. Test drove a Caddy ELR as I"ve never driven a hybrid before, interesting as the test drive around the gorgeous Greenwich waterfront/park area was in all electric. Not a rocket ship, but quiet, seemed like a good ride even with the 20" wheels. But, like my XF, not stellar visibility and, like my XK, a backseat more in name. I shoulda test driven a BMW, too, but couldn't tear myself away from the show/Bonham auction cars.
I plan to be back in '15. Would love to be an exhibitor, or maybe a bidder at Bonhams. Of course, I couldn't even afford the $40 to get into the tent on Sunday, that may be an issue...

Yeah, I'm thinking these 'verts might start appreciating as, you note, somewhat unique MB. But, I think the buying fever is wearing off, now that I"m back in minimum-wage reality... There were a plethora of Pagodas at the Bonham's auction, as well as the parking lots around the show.

I'd love to visit that EAG place if I had the chance. I come across their website often as I'm researching ZHPs. They certainly price their inventory dearly, but my understanding is that they pride themselves on nice, low mileage examples of these enthusiast cars - and complete any required maintenance before selling them.
Did a little more looking this weekend - and likely heading down that road of finding a nicer replacement for the Passat sooner than later (I'm sure that's not surprising).
2013 528i xdrive - this is the blue one I linked here last week. Nicely equipped with Premium, Cold and Tech pkgs (heads up display is so unnecessary and yet so cool). 20k miles - one owner, clean carfax and clean car. Probably my top choice, mostly for the value. They've had it for almost two months - I think the Oyster interior is a turn off to many, but it happens to be one of my favorites - so seems to me it's priced very competitively at $38k.
2014 328i GT - no used ones to speak of out there yet, but I test drove a new one. In theory, wife and I thought it would be the best choice - a bit sportier feel than the 5-series, loads of legroom in the rear seat, and the hatchback style I like. Still a top choice, but I found myself longing a little for the more expansive interior feel of the 5-series. I think I've gotten a bit used to the size of the Passat, so I'm starting to like the larger sedan feel.
2013 ES350 - after spending a lot of time at the BMW dealership, we thought we'd take another quick look at the Lexus. I thought it would be quickly dismissed for my more passionate feel toward the BMW brand in general, but I continue to consider it for 1) the comfort of the ride and 2) the peace of mind as a long-term car (snicker, snicker, I know) given the brand's reputation for reliability and resale. AWD is not an absolute requirement, but it sure is nice that the other choices have it. Also considering the ES300h - but really need to think about whether that hybrid drivetrain would work for me or not.
2015 Genesis - As a new Hyundai model, I wouldn't seriously consider buying a new one (and it's a bit out of my price range anyway), but I do have to share that my wife and I were quite smitten by the one they had on the lot. It was Sunday, so they were closed, but someone neglected to lock the car, so we were able check out the interior. Wow! 3.8 AWD model with a nice blue/gray exterior with a light almond interior, with the signature and tech packages, MSRP of $48k (just as Brian125 had pointed out). My wife thought it was kinda funny we were stopping by the Hyundai dealership, but she even was taken with the styling of the exterior, and particularly with the interior. Really well laid out with beautiful and very comfortable seats. Kind of a lot of money - but after browsing the Lexus and BMW lots, given the level of equipment, it still follows the traditional Hyundai approach. Feature-wise - you're getting a loaded 5-series or GS350 competitor for 3-series or ES money.
So there you go - hopefully I'm not totally boring everyone with my ongoing, non-stop quests - but this is my outlet (other than my wife, who is kind enough to indulge me).
No urgency on any of this other than that used 528i xdrive - well priced in the color and equipment I prefer - so that's a little hard to pass on. But otherwise, the 328i GTs aren't really available yet used, and there will always be a ton of ES350s out there.
so if you like the 5 series, stop in and make a low ball. When they balk, just make sure they have your number, and get up and walk out. See what they do.

Yeah, I did exactly that Friday. My low ball was $4,000 less than what they're offer was, though I strongly hinted as I left that I'd meet them halfway. Then I brought my wife in on Saturday to take a look at it - strategically, that was me letting them know I'm serious and have the wife's buyoff (they don't know that she lets me buy whatever I want ).
Wow - that's pretty. I haven't owned a red car since my 1990 Civic Si, but these BMW reds (namely, the Imola) have me thinking I'd like to own another one.

No doubt EAG puts a high premium on the cars, but they do back it up with real maintenance and repairs as required. I think someone who desires a car that they sell, and plans on keeping it for the long-term, it can be a good way to go. So for me, no. For roadburner, yes.
I'm sure that's not the cheapest E46 M3 around, but with the full maintenance history as well as recent services, might be money well spent. Good luck & keep us posted!

It won't be a quick appreciation, but you could drive it on sunny days and not lose value. For those on a budget who admire older MBs, a minty W124 sedan can be found for 5-7K - classic looks and build quality, modern car performance, tons of parts, easy to work on.

Oh you mean the radiator neck (top hose inlet) breaking off? Yeah, that's a BMW trick, but I honestly don't recall if the 7 Series are susceptible to that. If he has a 7 series, he's no stranger to high maintenance. I'd certainly give it a good look over. I had one break on a 328 by just tugging on the top hose. Quite a surprise. But at least it didn't happen on a freeway.
I have a question for the BMW faithful on this board. Over the years, I've seen several of you commenting about the maintenance requirements, which include (and I think this is nuts but I've never owned one..) a radiator replacement at a certain mileage interval, maybe 90K? My neighbor has a 2001 7-series, has also had several others, and tells me he's never heard of this. I told him I'd get more details. Can you enlighten me? Is this a 3-series only thing?

LD...that's a bucket list thing for me.....head up to CT to see Carini's place and go to a Concours. They have a Concours in Cincinnati where I live. But, the ones I see on CCC are way better than the local one. In the past, I've tought about moving to CT. Just could never find the right opportunity to make that happen.
BTW....my older sister is finally looking to trade her '04 S-Type....~120,000 trouble free miles. She loves it. Looking at anouther, but also kind of in love with the Caddy CTS. I told her to give me her check book and I'll nail something down for her.
RB....Went past their several days ago and saw that they had this on their front lot. Didn't have time to stop and look. But, if you get a chance, see if it's still there and take some pics to post. It looked GORGEOUS passing by it at 40 MPH, though. http://enthusiastauto.com/qsearch/?id=4428&form_display=51#.U43DRZSwJj4
Thats odd. I posted asking a question, my original post is now gone, but it appears in yellow highlight within someone else's post answering my question. The problem is, the answer post shows posted by me and not the person who answered. It also shows edited but I never did. How does that happen?

Thanks!

Are you kidding? We love spending your money.
so if you like the 5 series, stop in and make a low ball. When they balk, just make sure they have your number, and get up and walk out. See what they do.

Yeah, I did exactly that Friday. My low ball was $4,000 less than what they're offer was, though I strongly hinted as I left that I'd meet them halfway. Then I brought my wife in on Saturday to take a look at it - strategically, that was me letting them know I'm serious and have the wife's buyoff (they don't know that she lets me buy whatever I want
).
Kinda hoping for a call today, but nothing yet.

Wow - that's pretty. I haven't owned a red car since my 1990 Civic Si, but these BMW reds (namely, the Imola) have me thinking I'd like to own another one.

The most stunning thing about EAG's cars is the pricing..

Yes, but the car I'm looking at has a fresh Inspection II, VANOS rebuild, as well as new coolant and brake fluid, RTABs, tires and brakes- that's at least $3000-$4000 right there.

For those on a budget who admire older MBs, a minty W124 sedan can be found for 5-7K - classic looks and build quality, modern car performance, tons of parts, easy to work on.
man, I gotta say, I don't care what has been done. You can't make a $20k car into a $29k car by performing maintenance.

Local dealer has a 2014 Buick IaCrosse -AWD Msrp 45k --- Sell 35k. Bet you like it better than the Passat.

A high "book" price presumes excellent maintenance in the first place. So you generally don't add that on top of top dollar.
Exactly. I would SUBTRACT if it WASN'T done.

@js06gv, my guess is that Shifty answered your question and wound up editing your post thinking he was quoting you in a new post. I've caught myself doing that a few times (mods can edit any post). So don't worry, you aren't talking to yourself.
