Housekeeping note - not sure which discussion we were talking about the back button and Recent Discussions. That feature is back so you can now use the back arrow keys in your browser to go back to the discussion list and the list will automatically refresh.

So, general recap after all those fantastic posts!

Q, we have to refresh those lists every so often. Who wants to thumb through 1700 pages of posts to hunt that stuff down? :) A spreadsheet sounds like a very good idea.

Kyfdx - I knew there was a good story there! That's the best reason to keep a car that long.

We were quite fond of our '96 Outback, despite it's being an automatic. At the time, I did not even consider manual because my wife was not all that confident in her abilities with my C20, had experienced a minor "crash" that prior winter, and had not driven the truck since. We purchased it in August 2000 with 83K on the ticker, just a couple of weeks before our wedding. In 2003, I pulled the engine to replace a bunch of seals on it due to the dealership overfilling the oil, then in 2005 I replaced the water pump, and a few months later I had to pull it again to replace the head gaskets. Then, at 220,000 miles on 12/30/06, I was run off the road by a psycho driver and the car was destroyed. It was an early end for that ol' girl.

It did strand us a few times, even with babes on board, but we're pretty resourceful people, so we worked it out. In most cases, the strandings were my fault for one reason or another, so we never lost confidence in the car (not even on the night when I nearly froze to death due to the water pump failing at -30F and 0200 on a Sunday).

Geez, looking at these lists makes me a bit self conscious. I...I think only one or two of you, like Mike, have exceeded my number (red-faced), so I'm not going to divulge. Of course, Mike is older than me :).

I think looking back the most recent, say, 5 to 10 years is what is relevant for CCBA purposes. If you are averaging 1 punch per two years, you probably get an invite. But you really need to average 1 punch per year over that time if you want to play varsity. Needless to say, @breld is an all-star...

The 82 Tercel was my husband's daily driver when we met. It was a hatchback, manual, SR5 (fancy), with a sunroof. He loved the car but said he could go uphill without a nice breeze behind him. He traded it for the 1989 Celica GTS.

I wish. We have shifted in the direction of Toyota's lately. We have a good relationship with a GSM at the one of our local Toyota dealers. He knows we are serious and usually gives us a great deal with no haggling. Just realized I left our 2010 Camry and pair of 87 Corolla FX16 GTS' off of the list. Make that 56 since 1995.

    @au1994:

au1994, it was a dark red (coupe of course) with a stick (of course) and black interior.  I did not like the Lancia.  I drove it do a few months and found a new Datsun 300Z at a dealership.  The owner was Italian and offered me $2200 more than I paid for the Lancia Beta - he was infatuated with it.  Lancia Betas were very, very rare cars.  So he sold me the 300Z for his invoice and I made out like a bandit.

The Lancia Beta did not handle well and has almost no torque.  Very "bouncy" car for a sports car.  My favorite imported sports roadster was the 1974 TR-6.  Leaked oil all the time, but what a car!

The first one was "black"!  After a few months, I hated it.  Always showed water spots, every hairline scratch, etc.  Traded it for silver - much happier.  I'll never again buy a black car!  :s

top 5? Tough decision. And probably not what you would expect!

1991 Mazda 626LX 5 door. Green, MT. Loved that car.
    1986 Mazda 323LX. 4 door, MT.
2005 Accord 4 door EXL. MT. Should have kept it, and made my daughter deal with the stick.
2001 Miata. My only sports car or convertible. Too impractical, and I just didn't fit.
1974 Duster. Yellow, 3 speed on the floor. Sunroof. Mostly for the HS memories!

    Top 5....

2013 Accord EX sedan w/ manual
1999 Accord EX sedan w/ manual
2001 Accord EX V6 coupe (make that 57 cars, left this one off the list)
    2012/2015 Prius
2004 Accord EX sedan w/ manual

Really, it's too tough to call. Out of my list, there have only been a few that I disliked.

just realized I also left Gee's 08 Lexus IS250 w/ manual transmission and his 98 Prelude off my earlier list. 59 cars in 20 years. If I can find one more I let slip through, I will be at 60.

My top five, from an admittedly short list compared to the regulars here:

    1. 1973 240-Z (replaced the horrible carbs w/ the earlier SUs)
    2. 1965 MGB
    3. 1994 Miata R (manual steering, stiff suspension)

Hey, top five! That's not too hard since my list is only twelve!

1969 C20 (so practical, so pretty, and surprisingly fun to drive)
1969 Econoline (My "lifer" vehicle, I've had it ~25 years and poured way more blood, sweat, and tears into this thing than any vehicle has a right to receive.)
2008 Subaru Outback (this one was a flip from the start, so we never intended to keep it. As such, we bought an automatic so it would sell faster. But, it also had a rear limited slip diff, and boy was that a fun car to drive!)
    2009 Forester
    2011 Fiesta
    2018 Subaru Crosstrek, 2014 Audi Q7 TDI, 2013 Subaru Forester, 2013 Ford F250 Lariat D, 1976 Ford F250, 1969 Chevrolet C20, 1969 Ford Econoline 100

Top one would be the '99 Quest. Purchased on New Year's Eve and 5 months later we had quit our jobs, sold our house and most of our possessions and took off for a year long road trip in it. 32,000 miles later we wound up in Boise and started over.

Growing up, my folks had some interesting vehicles...which just added to my love for the automobile. Here are some that I remember.

    1957 Chrysler Wagon
    1958 Chevy Corvette
    1960 Cadillac Sedan de Ville
    1962 Cadillac Sedan de Ville
    1963 Buick Riviera
    1964 Cadillac Sedan de Ville
    1966 Lincoln Continental
    1967 Oldsmobile Toronado
    1968 Cadillac Eldorado
    1969 Oldsmobile Toronado
    1970 Cadillac convertible
    1972 Lincoln Continental Coupe
    1972 Ford Torino
    1975 Pontiac Grand Prix
    1977 Pontiac Bonneville
    1980 Pontiac Parissiane diesel
    1983 Pontiac Parissiane
    1986 Mercury Grand Marquis
    1990 Mercury Grand Marquis
    1994 Mercury Grand Marquis
    1998 Mercury Grand Marquis
    2002 Mercury Grand Marquis

Seem to remember my dad having some kind of Chrysler when I was born as my grandpa owned a Chrysler store but not sure what type. Just remember a 2 door coupe with fuzzy mouse fur seats but I was quite young then. One thing I couldn't understand that after my dad passed in 1986, my mom stayed with the same vehicle, white with the dark blue 1/2 vinyl roof with that goofy rear tire thing out back. It was so ugly but quite popular in their South Florida golfing community and her best friend's husband sold her each one, but they all looked the same!
Will have to come up with our list eventually but am sure the list won't be as expansive as the rest in here. One of the best things when younger was the way most vehicles were different every year unlike now with these 5 or 6 year models with minimal changes. Guess things got to be a bit different in the mid '80's or so. Personally, I prefer the old days when models changed from year to year...much more exciting!!

Looking at all these lists reminds me of the old guy who said that over the years he had spent most of his money on cars, women, and liquor......and just wasted the rest of it. B)

Ha! I'm more impressed that you do. '81. Gold, hatchback, base with a 5 speed manual. Toyota was so proud of the extra gear that it wore a chrome '5 Speed' badge on the back. 62 horses of fury.

Funny... my '82 Accord also had the "5-speed" emblem.

It was a big deal, considering my two vehicles before that had a 3-speed and a 4-speed stick.

    Top 5?

Mostly because they were different or interesting..

    In order of acquisition

    '76 Jeep CJ=5
    '67 BMW 2000CS
    '84 Porsche 911 Targa
    '88 Mazda 323 GTX
'06 BMW 330Ci ZHP (daily driver for the last 5+ years)

But, the best car was the '82 Accord hatch.

I got a letter in the mail from a local Acura dealer saying "come in for special manager inside deals" Wink Wink, nudge, nudge. Now I'm sticking to my financially conservative automotive finance plan (pay off Pilot, start doubling up on Legacy payments). But that doesn't stop me from looking. I started looking at MDXs at one particular dealership and ran some interesting numbers. What would you do if you were presented with the following:

    2016 Acura MDX w/ SH AWD & Tech Pkg: MSRP $49,440 - Invoice $46,768

Assuming the selling price is at least invoice, do you buy it and finance at $840 per month (ball park with interest) for 60 months or do you lease it for 36 months/15K per year at $579.55 per month?

CPO 2015 MDX w/ SH AWD & Tech Pkg: $43,995 asking price. Say you get them to knock $2K off that and your selling price is $41,995. The car has 12,271 Miles. Finance at about $750 - $760 per month.

CPO 2014 MDX w/ SH AWD & Technology Pkg: $35,995 asking price. Say you get them to knock $3K off that price and your purchase price is $33,995. The car has 42,745 Miles. Finance at about $610 per month.

Which MDX do you go for and why?

Lease the 2016 with $0 down. That's the least expensive way to get the best three years of its life.

oh boy, top 5... good question.

Interesting that both kyfdx and I have a CJ on our lists. This is really tough. The top 3 are standouts (although the CJ more for nostalgia than anything else), but then I've got 4 in mind for the remaining 2 spots. Surprisingly, the 135 doesn't make the list only because, as badass as that was on the track, the unreliability really kills the memory of it. So I'm listing 7 in the order I feel like this moment. :)

    1. Caddy CTS Vsport (I mean, why else would I have it right now?)
    2. '98 S70 T5 (auto)
    3. '78 CJ7 (6-cyl 3-spd)
    4. '07 GTI (6-spd)
    5. '04 350Z (6-spd)
    6. '97 Dakota v8 (auto)
    7. '87 4runner (4-cyl [22RE] 5-spd)

    '11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

    1. 13 Accord EX--all around good car, easy everyday driver, enjoyable even when driven hard. Am I getting old?
    2. 95 Jetta GLX VR-6, 5sp. Fun ride, black, BBS, smooth willing engine but my 00 GLX VR-6 was actually a better car
    3. 92 Mazda Miata--always a pleasure to zoom around in, top down of course
    4. 96 Mazda Millenia, my first real splurge, good looking in black with tan interior, a pleasure to drive
    5. 70 DeVille convertible. In a league of its own. Though not fast in today's world, the old girl would lift up her fender skirts and scoot when pressed. A light moan from the engine and the exhaust swishing as it quietly speed up to speed as the gas gauge would dive for E.

    Honorable mention:
    7. 76 Pontiac Sunbird coupe. V6, 5sp, a/c, luxury interior, sport wheels. It faithfully provided service for my college years and first years in the work world. I always took good care of it and kind of wish I had it today.
    8. 65 Olds Cutlass 2dr hardtop. Though I bought it to flip, I really liked that car.

Agree with the '70 DeVille drop top. Ours was white top over light blue and my dad and 3 of his golfing buddies got a good deal from an Orlando dealership and they purchased the 4 of them in different colors. Though I liked the white over white best, the folks liked the white over light blue. Remember the day we went over to the club to get it, a warm April morning and the first ting we did was put the top down. Great vehicle and was used in the homecoming parade and football game in '71 and '72...the school asked my folks if they could use it as the Grand Marshall's ride and my older brother did the driving the first year and I did it the second.
Perfect vehicle for South Florida living and we kids used it with the top down more than our folks did. Wish we had it now really but having a sunroof will do.

My top 5 list is pretty easy. I'm using the criteria of which 5 I would want to still have today, assuming I had the space to keep them. These are not in preferential order; n fact they are in reverse preference from #5 to #1 :

    1977 LeMans 2-door
    1985 MR2
    1990 GTI
    1968 Cutlass 2-door
    2014 Cadillac ATS

I would give an honorable mention to the '02 Intrigue. 6 years of mostly trouble-free service, lots of room, great visibility, and a lovely engine. A shame that car didn't get updated and the engine continue to be developed by GM. If it had, I'd probably have a newer version and it would probably take the place of the ATS on this list just for the extra room.

2017 Cadillac ATS Performance Premium 3.6

Just got back from getting the Audi a bath and sat in a gray over gray S3 in the showroom. Beautiful vehicle and loved the detail of the interior especially the seats. What a really nice vehicle. They had a slightly used 2016 A3, white over black like ours, asking price $30,000. Think it had about 1500 on the clock and the price was an end of the month special according to the windshield. Audi makes a fine product.
Also stopped by the VW store to price out a few accessories I'd like. A few dollars more at the dealer as compared to the online site but if I get them at the dealer and there's a mistake, they take care of it. If I screw up the article number or something else, I have to deal with the returns/refunds, whatever. Sometimes it's just best to pay a little extra to get things right. Then I'd need to get the dealer to install what I pick up. But the few things I might get just make the vehicle nicer looking cosmetically. A want and not really a need here.
