I ran across some blue Xenon head lights for my Sonata on Ebay. I'm seriously considering purchasing them, but wondered if there any issues, like connectivity, effectiveness, etc. that I should be aware of before making the purchase. Anyone have sugguestions?

I put a set in my '06 and have never had a problem other than they are so bright and I have them set prretty high that the high beam has very little effect. You'll need the entire kit including the transfomers or whatever they are called, I had mine installed by astereo shop who know what they are doing , it takes a little fooling around to set them where they are affective, but man oh man do they light up the road. my 2 cents worth.

I'm pretty much clueless about this stuff. The set that I found on Ebay quoted "plug and play" installation. Is it really a bigger deal than just pulling out the old bulbs and popping in the Xenons?

Also, I saw on recent posts you had the "rice crispy" noise fixed on your car. Mine is also a 2006 and has what I believe is the same issue. I looked for a TSB on it, but the ones I found are not easy to read. Do you know if there is a TSB on this issue?

So THAT's what it is, eh? My '06 did it one wet morning a couple of weeks back. It took three or four "reboots" to get it moving, and the idiot light was on for an hour or so afterwards. Thanks for the heads-up Cajun.

My Sonata has about 10k miles. Last week I have been noticing a high pitched squeel, it is not coming from the front, it sounds like it is coming from the back. When I hit the brakes the squeel stops. I have no idea what it could be. Can someone help?

    Get your brakes checked.

I'm looking at a 2007 Sonata GLS 4cyl, auto., 37k miles, sunroof, power drivers seat. The dealer has it listed on their website for $11,995, which seems like a good price. I've never owned a hyundai before, but this seems like a nice car, any big problems I should be aware of with this model? It would still have about 23k left on the warranty, which is nice.

Be sure to look at the Carfax report (the dealer probably already has one you can see) and see if the maintenance records are available, especially check to make sure the 30k service was done, it is not cheap. Check the tire tread, it could be wearing thin at this point. Be sure to drive it over rough roads; some Sonatas have excessive suspension noise, for which there is a TSB to deal with.

One thing to check on the Carfax is the number of owners. The remainder of the 5-year warranty transfers to the second owner.

Waxing the car can leave some blotches on the front, black grill, and on other black parts (like the black triangle behind the rear door windows) which is very difficult to get rid off, and looks ugly, as if the black color has faded....

Using a a good quality rubber or plastic eraser would do the job nicely! I tried it, it works!

    Marcg99,

I have the exact same problem. Did you have any luck in finding a cause? I am bringing the car in soon to investigate but it would be nice to know if your problem is repaired.

    Thanks, Barb

I have a 2006 Sonata GL at 40k. I have noticed two different vibration/shaking problems.
    1. sometimes around 75mph, my steering wheel will start to vibrate left and right very fast. This was really bad when I got my new tires, after they rebalanced, it is not too bad. I remember the guy said that he didnt think he could get rid of vibration at that speed, but then found out the wheels were severely out of balance. Also, I do notice that it gets worse depending on my engine RPM (at the same speed), but I have trouble pinpointing. I have also gotten an alignment. Is it normal to have some vibration at speeds like 75mph? or should I go back and try to rebalanced?

    2. The entire front, steering wheel, dash, etc will shake as if I am driving over some bumps. This happens if I have a hard stop (not necessarily from high speeds). At first I suspected the brakes, but I noticed that the same thing would happen if I had the cruise control on at high speed and just hit the cancel button. So it seems to be related to slowing down quickly. This problem seemed to exist before I changed my tires too. Could there be something in the engine causing this shaking and the vibration?

Also, when i changed my tires from the orig ones, I ask the tire place if they had any with higher mileage. They said they had some at "T" rating. I didn't know anything about the ratings and asked the person. He told me that it doesn't matter as long as I don't drive above the rated value. Recently when i got my car checked out, the mechanic noted that I have T tires but the mfr tires should be V and that I can have "severely reduced handling" by going down more than one rating. Is this true? Is there a safety concern? I havent noticed any difference, the traction in snow seems to be alittle better but that could just be due to having newer tires.

Hey all. Have a 2006 Sonata GLS w/ Sport Package. Tires are Michelin 225 50 R17. I'm pricing out options for replacing right now. Can different size tires be put on this car or do I have to put 225 50 R17's on there? Also, any recomendations? I'd rather not pay over $160 per tire.

    Thanks in advance.

What kind of driving conditions do you need to accommodate? Rain, snow, high speed, etc.

I've not been happy with Michelin for the past 10 years or so, and while Goodyear isn't my favorite, I've been satisfied with the TripleTred Assurance. It has more road noise than I'd prefer but wet & snow traction is noticably better than the Michelin Energys they replaced. Neither my wife's nor my car have TSC and my wife's car lacks ABS, so any extra traction we can get is a good thing when driving around Chicagoland winters.

Look at Kumho Tires. You can get the for around $130 a tire In that original tire size. They also come with a tread wear warranty. They are good. You can use 215 55 R 17.

I owned 2 06 sonata's and the air from the vents smelled like an old wet musty rag. Hyundai needs to buy evaporator coils with antimold water pans in them.

Did you replace the filter, for air intake?
  • eagle2aeagle2a Member Posts: 97
My 06 Sonata I4 Auto only has 10,000 miles on it but I notice that the manual calls for a fuel filter replacement at 30 mo. So my question is how many of you folks have had the filter replaced and how much did it cost?

The reason I ask is the fact that the filter is in the gas tank. "Wow" what a location for a filter. I am sure Hyundai did this for a good reason but, Wow! A nice inline filter I could replace would have been nice!

Any knowledgeable suggestions would be appreciated.

Is a Hyundai Sonata 2007 the same as a 2008 driver side mirror .
  • eagle2aeagle2a Member Posts: 97
I have found out some additional information since I posted this inquiry.

My local Hyundai dealer wants 80.00 per hr. and they say it is a apx. a 1 hour job plus about $20.00 for a filter. So about $100.00 for a gas filter change.

I told the person I talked with that while my 06 Sonata was at the 30 mo position I only had 10,000 miles on it. She told me that if there was not problems with the car, such as lower gas millage or hard starting or other engine running problems, I was possibly safe out to 20 or even 30 thousand miles.

So I am going to forgo any gas filter changes for the time being,

Yes, I have one of each and there appears to be no difference - wish they were on a hinge though

Can anyone reccomend replacement tires for my 2006 Sonta 215/60/16. The original Michelins only have 27K. I am not happy with them at all. I was looking at replacing them with a General Tire Altimax HP V. Any feedback would be appreciated.
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
What are you looking for the tires to do differently:
    1) Quieter
    2) Better performance in snow
    3) Better rain performance
    4.......
www.Tirerack.com is a good site for seeing your options and the cost.

I had some Goodyear Assurance Triple-tread and they improved the wet/snow performance greatly on my Mercury Sable. The tires it had would spin in the rain under moderate acceleration put the new Goodyear's on and I do not think I could get them to spin.

Replacement should be covered under your auto insurance policy.

I have a 2006 Sonata with a 4 cyl. engine. When I am between 45 and 50 mph the car starts cutting out. No check engine light comes on. I have tried turning the AC on and off with no change. I have manually shifted to 4th gear because the service guy said it could be going in and out of overdrive.

The service people can't reproduce the problem and it is driving me crazy.

Has anyone else had this problem?

    Thanks!
    :confuse:

I am having the exact same problem. I have has no luck at the service department...
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If by "cutting out" you mean the engine stalls, that is a safety issue and if I were you I'd report it to the NHTSA so they can start an investigation. If several owners report a similar problem, it could encourage (or even force Hyundai) to take action. Then you might tell the service manager at the dealership that you have reported the problem to the NHTSA.

I just took my 2k6 Sonata in for a transmission service last week. They replaced botht of the visors. I told them that the drivers side visor had been replaced a few months back because of the problem you mentioned. The told me there was a recall on the visors and replaced them both.

I'm new to this forum so I don't know if this is right place but here goes:

I've recently purchased used 2007 Sonata and have the following question about the keyless entry.
When I unlock the doors I notice that there is a short flashing of parking lights, however when locking the doors with the remote there is no indication.
I believe the manual says there ought be a short chirping which I am not hearing. The remote is just for keyless entry (no alarm is present).
While this may be related, I find the horn sound is not very robust (actually quite puny). Is this normal for this car?
  • chief15chief15 Member Posts: 15
    I have a 2006 Sonata.
When locking the doors via the remote, my lights flash. In order to get the "chirping" sound when locking the doors, keep pressing on the remote a few seconds longer.

Yes, the horn is rather "puny"
The only time that it gives a "robust" sound is when the alarm goes off.

After accelerating from a stop, my 06 sonata engine light and
ESC OFF light comes on, and it acts like it is in neutral-it is still running, but will not accelerate or brake properly. I have to pull over carefully and restart. The engine light will still stay on, but it will drive correctly. I have pushed the ESC OFF button, turned on off a/c, etc. This has been going on for the last year or so, weeks at a time then nothing for months. I have taken it to the shop but they cannot reproduce the problem as it clears after car is shut off. the only way they can experience this is to either have the car towed to them after the problem occurs while it is still running, or have them keep the car for who knows how long and have to drive it until it acts up again.
  • samiam_68samiam_68 Member Posts: 775
The dealer should be able to read diagnostic codes from the ECU after a check engine light. These are stored in memory and are not cleared.
  • jhopkins1jhopkins1 Member Posts: 6
Yes I thought they should be able to read an error code, but the local Hyundai dealer said they are cleared when the car gets turned off, or when it is not acting up. It has to have done this over 60 times by now. I have taken it to the shop before regarding this and they were unable to help. The mfg. said they would step in but no one has said how the rental would be handled. It could be a quite lengthy stay.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
Why not purchase an inexpensive code reader yourself and keep it connected until the next occurrence?
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
If you bring the car in after the problem occurs the codes should be there. The codes are stored and the oldest code is erased but the most recent group of codes will there.

Since I've had my Sonata 2006 I've noticed the cabin noise is becoming very annoying. When I'm driving on the hwy or on the street the outside noise coming in is loud. I like to drive in a quiet car. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to cut down the noise?
  • rooney6rooney6 Member Posts: 5
I'm figuring that the ABS brakes are on when I hear grinding noise upon applying the brakes. When this ocurrs I immediately release the brakes thinking that something is going to fall out the bottom and I start pumping the brakes to keep from hitting the car in front of me. Would it be okay to press the pedel to the floor until I come to a complete stop? I also feel the shaking, pulling underneath my foot. Is this normal?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
With ABS, just keep your foot on the brakes. They do the pumping for you. Some noise and vibration in the pedal are normal with ABS.
  • rooney6rooney6 Member Posts: 5
When the ESC off light is on, what is this an indication of? I notice it comes on when braking. When I turn the car off the light goes out, but a few minutes later when the car is running again it'll come on again. It doesn't happen often, but often enough to catch my attention and it only seems to come on in the winter time.
  • rooney6rooney6 Member Posts: 5
Thank you for the quick response. I'll try that.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
ESC should not activate unless you are maneuvering the car past its limits for conditions. In icy conditions, it could activate more than on dry roads. When driving straight ahead, it should not activate. If the light comes on under normal driving conditions or when stopped, you should have the car checked.
  • rooney6rooney6 Member Posts: 5
This is very helpful. I'll pay closer attention to events that trigger the light to activate.
    Thanks again for the feedback!
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
Lets clarify something here, you should not have any noise coming from your ABS system unless you are braking very hard. The ABS does not activate unless it senses an imminent loss of braking friction. You should also not be able to put "the pedal to the floor" with normally functioning brakes. The grinding noise may very well be the warning that your brake pads are worn out.

Get to a brake shop ASAP, especially if you can put "the pedal (all the way) to the floor".
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Many ABS systems make a sound when activated that could be interpreted as "grinding". Some are louder than others. It can be quite a surprise to someone who has never experienced it before--which I assume rooney6 hasn't, until recently.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
I may very well be on the wrong track here, but I'm concerned that the OP didn't say something like "occasionally or once in a while" when describing the problem. "Upon applying the brakes" means something else like "frequently or usually" to me.

Its wintertime and you're in Minnesota, how often do you trigger the ABS?
