Guys, I finally got my CD Changer replaced. I still think that the 'recall' story that the service advisor at the dealership gave me was BS, just to cover up his inefficiency. Because I haven't heard anything about it from any other Sonata owner. Moreover 'recall' is for safety issues and I don't think CD player qualifies. ;) Whatever, I don't have the time/energy to investigate into this. My CD player is now working fine. Peace to all.

Actually there HAS BEEN quite a few issues with the 6-CD chnager, and a number of complaints... So you're not alone. Happens.

You could have gotten a much better deal on the GLS I4 (same I purchased on Jan. 31).

What you got is an $800 discount on the MSRP (which is about $19,350, I believe)... I would try to bargain again (if you can still do it, legally)... You are entitled to some rebates, especially if you agreed to take a loan (which you could actually pay off withing less than a month, regardless of what the dealer tells you...).

Please check this matter before you take posession of the car.

UNLESS THE PRICE YOU QUOTED HERE IS "OUT THE DOOR"... Even then, seems a bit high, not as much of course....

I think its kind of lame that Hyundai only warranties the radio for 3 years or 36,000 miles. It really should be under the regular Bumper-to-bumper 5/60,000 policy.

Check the fine print at the bottom of the ad. You may have to be a current owner of a Hyundai that you previously purchased at Bell Road Hyundai, OR, you might have to trade in a fairly new Hyundai to get the advertised price. And if a trade is required, they may try to give you less than it is worth to get some profit back into the deal.
If ad shows only one is available you may just be wasting your time. But if you go in and they say that one ad car is sold, you could offer to pay the same price for another, or maybe offer to pay a little more for a similar car.
It has worked for me before (but never at Bell Road Hyundai).
Your choice, of course. Good luck!

The MSRP on the GLS I4 with no options is $19,995 including destination. The rebates now are $1500 less than they were in January, with $500 max for non-Hyundai owners and $1000 for owners. (Plus the usual military and college grad rebates.)

I know here in NC the dealers were doing some crazy low pricing as well but when you call them to find out the deal, its including $3000.00 down or trade equity, which there ads did not say anything about.
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
    Hahaha!
    Crazy dealers, not crazy deals.
The funniest creative pricing I've seen so far is what the addendum sticker lists as "Trade-in Assistance". The dealer has the audacity to itemize, right there on the window sticker, an additional $1500 to the price and call it "assistance".
    Hahahahahahahah!
    Crazy dealers!

I believe it's similar to the separate warranty for the tires. Since it's electronics, and not related to the operation of the vehicle per se, the longer warranty doesn't apply. The warranty Hyundai supplies on the radio is longer than most warranties on general consumer electronics items, some of which only have 90 day warranties.

anyone hear anything on a sonata coupe at all?
  • joe97joe97 Member Posts: 2,248
Nothing new as of late but the coupe is still in the plans, also a possible convertible version :)

Seems there's a few recall items that our 06 Sonata GLSV6 requires. Just got the slip in the mail yesterday and it needs the following:
    T15 PCM Reprogramming
    T18 Cupholder
    T19 Door Handle

Anyone else get one of these or know any details?

BTW, we absolutely love this car w/ NO problems and 6000 miles~and are getting 30 MPG hwy 24 city w/ our silky-smooth V6 :)

did 06 model come out in May 05, should we expect the 07 model anytime soon? thanks.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Yes, there was mention a few posts back that the '07 models are due out in May.
  • dan42dan42 Member Posts: 32
Yah, I also heard that the new 07 Sonata will be coming out in may. I hope they still have decent rebates when the new 07's roll out. Hope the 07' Sonata has additional steering wheel functions, electric GLS 4Cyl. front seat, slanting front seat problem fixed, and satellite radio. Anybody think they will come out with a navigation system?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
There should be really good rebates on the 2006 models when the 2007s come out. ;) I would not be surprised to see all the changes you noted, especially XM since Hyundai has already said the Sonata would have it by the end of 2006. Nav is the interesting question--if they don't offer it on the Azera at the same time, the Sonata could take sales away from the Azera.

I have finally gotten the correct information etc on the Hyundai sign in section. Now however, I don't seem to be able to see the "service items" sorry, I don't recall what they are called. (TSB's ??) Also, I remember reading somewhere that I would be able to find the "service manual" or something like that on line to either download, or at least read. Would someone please help me? I must be doing something wrong, I just can't seem to locate it.
Oh yeah, 2006 Sonata LX if needed. Thanks, Van
  • 747pilot747pilot Member Posts: 38
I know Hyundai has been listening to customers and since the 06 is an all new design I am sure they are listening closely. I am sure they will make some minor changes and add a few things based on feedback. I am sure we will also see a color or two dropped and a color or two added as well.

The Nav feature will be interesting. Somehow I don't think we will get it here. At least not as soon as 07. If it was coming in 07 for the Sonata then I believe the Azera would have it now. Also the Nav system is a $1,500 to $2,000 option in most cars. This could be well beyond the scope of the Sonata in North America price wise.

I have also been doing a lot of research on these Nav systems. They tend to be a bit flaky in reliability and often suffer from software glitches. Even worse they require database upgrades every few years and this can cost several hundred dollars. In a few cases the manufacture even stopped supporting it so you now have a worthless display on your dash. I still think they are cool for the bling factor but now that I think about it I am not sure I really want one. Nothing beats a $5.00 map :D

Just used the edmunds used car appraiser to find out what the trade in value of my 06 GLS 4cyl (no options) with 6700 miles and in clean condition. Much to my surprise the dealer trade in value is 15,340. I'm surprised because I only paid 14,563 out the door (this was after the dealer allowed $2700 for trade-in of my 2001 accent LX, applied $1194 for TTL, and subtracted $2500 in rebates) on Dec 27, 2005. I'm also surprised because although I've only made four payments, the payoff amount for my GLS is $2000 less than what edmunds says a dealer should give me for a trade.

Google Hyundai WebTech for the link. You'll need to open an account (it's free). Once you have a user name and a password, you can access recent and archived TSBs. You can also click on "SHOP" and type in the model year to access any Hyundai model shop manual. You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader for that. Once you open the desired section, you can read, download the PDF file, or print it out. Some sections for the '06 Sonata have not been posted. The last time I checked, the automatic transmissions don't have full text and diagrams, nor does the basic engine block mechanicals. Whether this was an oversight or intentional on Hyundai's part is anyone's guess.
  • lightfootfllightfootfl Member Posts: 442
Many thanks, appreciate the answer. I already have had the user name and PW but they weren't working for me before, although they may have that fixed now too. I have tried before only to receive nothing. Oh well, I will continue trying, one of these days I will get it all together. Again, thanks. van
Looks like it is going to work OK now, except it doesn't like my VIN .. guess that is OK though.

12000 miles on my LX, no major complaints - mpg a little disappointing, front seat could be more comfortable, takes some bumps kinda hard, but in every other respect meeting and exceeding expectations. Great ride for the $$ I do find the sun roof to be noisy, however - has anyone had a wind deflector installed? Does it reduce the noise appreciably? How much $$?? thanks

You must use IE, Firefox or other browsers will not work.

06 GLS 4cyl dealer trade in value is 15,340.

WOW... That's nice... I paid $15,700 (before trade in, tax and TTL, of course)... That was on Jan. 31. And I have now 1,400 on the odometer.

What was YOUR net price (after the rebates) but before all the other things (trade-in, tax and TTL) involved, rhduke00?
  • lightfootfllightfootfl Member Posts: 442
Thanks, found that out too, the hard way, after pulling out what is left of my hair(s). I guess I just have to learn things the hard way. Oh well, it keeps me busy trying to figure out all this stuff anyway. Still haven't figured the problem with the VIN though. But it looks like everything else is going to be OK. I hope. :) Thanks, van

I have been getting 22 mpg with under 1000 miles still on the clock (06 LX V6). If I am lucky I might get another 1 or 2 mpg after break in period is over. I consider 22 mpg pretty average for the size and power of the V6 in the Sonata. I am lucky and work odd hours so I don't get stuck in much traffic. Usually at 2am in the morning I am the only car on the road and the lights are always green.

I have owned many V6 cars in the past and they always sucked a lot of fuel in heavy city traffic. This is one benefit of a 4 cylinder motor. Less cylinders banging away at traffic lights. It can even be more horrid with a V6 if you do a lot of short trips. They take a little longer to warm up and just suck the gas down.

Here in Canada due to our winters our cars are subjected to an annual spraying of road salt. Needless to say rust is a concern for those who want to keep the car for a long period of time. Do you think its worth buying an after-market rush protection package (which has to be re-applied every year)?

Also has anyone hear of an electronic box which repels ions, and thus rust? I know it sounds wacky but two dealerships i went to mentioned it as an alternative rust protector.
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
the so-called Rustproofing applications are the #1 cause of RUST! Drilling holes is how rust can get hold on a car!
Todays cars have all the rusproofing they need at the car manufacturer. With all the new technology, rust is no longer a major problem, like it used to be 15-20 years ago!
  • lservelserve Member Posts: 50
This seems to be consistent with what I'm seeing - range for "avg" seems to about 18 - 24 for the v6. I'm leaning towards the 6 - but want to make sure its no too hard on the pump.
  • johnap2johnap2 Member Posts: 105
Garbage...along with about 99% else a dealer will sell you like Scotchguard (6.00/can at Walmart), "permanent wax" paint protection, etc. Just more ways to strip you of your hard earned cash...
  • bobadbobad Member Posts: 1,587
    Iserve,

It's a mystery to me why folke are reporting the V6 mileage so low. I got 26 mpg right off the lot, and am trending higher with ~1500 miles on the odo. Daily commute is 20 miles each way, 80% highway, 20% city, average is speed ~39 mph.

Maybe people are trusting the trip computer. On the highway, mine is always within 1 mpg of true measured. In town, it can be 2-3 mpg off. Idling at stop lights absolutely destroy mileage and can fool the trip computer too.
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
Most cars are rust proofed at the factory and don't need anything additional. I live in the Midwest and get my car coated with the same salt you guys have in Canada, so far after 5 winters no rust. Best thing you can do to prevent rust is to keep the car waxed and clean. Also if you have any nicks or scratches make sure you take car of them.

    2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D

  • ray_h1ray_h1 Member Posts: 1,134
The rust to worry about is that which attacks from the inside and works out with eventual peforation. No amount or type of exterior waxing will protect from that. snakeweasel is absolutely right about the factory anti-perforation treatment, though. If you have the panels drilled for aftermarket "rustproofing" mrdisco33, the odds are good you'll void the factory rust-through warranty that goes out to 5 years or so with unlimited mileage.

I use a calculator to figure out my mileage and I am getting lousy mileage. On a recent trip all highway I got 23 mpg driving around 70 mph, and never over that speed. On my 2000 and previous Taurus V6's I always got 30 mph. or better. So I would have to say I am very disappointed in the mileage.
  • krikakrika Member Posts: 49
I understand your disappointment, verno1. My LX V6 gives me a mere ~15mpg in the city. Its been over 7000miles now.
  • lawrence45lawrence45 Member Posts: 44
I understand your disappointment too, krika, but I am still getting a mere 14-15 mpg in the city in my GLS I4- using a calculator, not the computer, to calculate it. Have just under 3,000 miles on odometer.
  • lawrence45lawrence45 Member Posts: 44
Now that spring is here, I want to do something about the sunlight that comes through the untinted windows on my Sonata. Some of you have had the glass tinted and I know there are products like shades, etc. for sale at auto supply stores. Which products have you used? Any recommendations?
  • silverfox1silverfox1 Member Posts: 91
Are you in a cold climate and what % of driving is city versus hwy? I am in Waukesha, Wisconsin and finally have gotten my local mpg to range from 17 - 20 mpg with 80% city driving. I have close to 6000 miles on the car and use Mobil 1 5w-20 weight oil.
  • silverfox1silverfox1 Member Posts: 91
Sorry did not mention that I have an 06 Sonata LX with the V6.

How many are waiting for the 07 Sonata to come out before buying one now?
  • phill1phill1 Member Posts: 319
I`ve had DRL`s on ALL my previous vehicles and appreciate the safety effect they afford. I`ve tried in vain at several Hyundia Dealerships asking for assistance in service or parts department and get nothing but dumb, slack jawed responses. Calling Hyundia Customer Service gets the same. If Sonata`s built in Alabama and shipped to Canada have them installed at the factory, whats the damn mystery? Is it a simple easy to install module/relay or a completely different wiring harness? And, NO, I choose not to keep my headlights on manually during the day because they illuminate too much glare at full output plus no need to keep burning lamps all day in rear taillights! I`ve seen some universal aftermarket kits offered over the internet but rather not cut into wiring and chance voiding the 5 year/60 K and 10 year 100K warranty. Any suggestions?

Will the 07 Sonata have the 5-speed auto with the 2.4L?
