You cannot pick and choose whether or not to have Smart Key. It is always bundled with a big pack of other options and packages.
You really need to just decide whether you want a totally loaded car or not.
Debating Smart Key usefulness or need as an individual option is moot.

Gas prices and more people can afford a Corolla anyway.

    We really enjoy ours.

You don't have a "key", you have a remote with a built in key. That key is only used if the remote dies for whatever reason, you won't get locked out.

It's really handy when you've got your hands full. Especially for opening the trunk! The pushbutton-start part is just really cool.

College grad discount (for wife's masters): -$400
    Total (w/o TTL): $28,474

    Total savings off MSRP: $2,528

Will soon add $287 for Sirius equipment and installation. The kit isn't available yet, but he's promised this same price when it is available. I've seen some people get charged up around $700, so this seems like a steal.

This was the original agreed upon price, but then there was some hail damage the day before we took delivery, so we worked out some additional deals, but they wouldn't normally apply.
  • bobgwtwbobgwtw Member Posts: 187
Not correct. Smart key is a stand alone option - $450. - & can be ordered as such, if you are willing to order a car & wait for delivery.
  • gene22gene22 Member Posts: 34
I was not thrilled with the smart key option, but after having my new Camry for 3 days, I have found a really good reason to get it.

The key slot seems to sit a bit low on the steering column to the point that the other keys on the key ring are banging into my knee. Not noticeable with long pants, but for sure when wearing shorts. The only solution I can see for this is not have the car key on a ring. Little thing, but annoying.
  • kdhspyderkdhspyder Member Posts: 7,160
Why would you even use the key slot? In your delivery didn't the salesperson show you that you don't ever have to take it out of your pocket?

Once this magicial little device ;) is inside the frame of the car all you have to do is press 'Start', shift and GO. Try it.

I am thinking he didn't get the Smart Key option.

I just recently joined the forum which is the reason for the delayed comment. I have the 2007 Camry LE 4cyl 5 speed also. Have about 700 miles on it now, and have been back to the dealer once with the problems you describe. the answer I got was that is the way "drive by wire works" -
"get used to it". The service manager told me the computer
has to "learn" how I drive in order for it to change to suit my style of driving. The service department did a "scan" on it and did a test drive - no problems found.
They told me this technology has been used by Toyota since 2005 and many owners have complained about it. I feel that if the dissatisfaction has been around that long, why hasn't Toyota fixed it. I traded in a 2003 Camry LE 4 cyl,
4 speed and never had any complaints of any kind with it.
I wish I still had it.

Dangling keys would definitely get into your knees if you have a frontal crash and the air bag deploys. The manual suggests not hanging items such as keys to the ignition key. I think that is an excellent idea even though it is
    inconvenient in some ways.

Driveability issues with drive-by-wire are certainly not limited to Toyotas. The technology is here to stay, though, since it simplifies matters on the factory assembly floor - no cables to adjust (or eventually stretch out of adjustment), a totally electrical interface with accelerator and cruise control and the snap connectors between those various components. While I've read of no pending "fixes" for Toyota's current iteration in the new Camry, other makes at some point have issued TSBs that detailed updating the ECM software through the OBD-II connector for improved response per customer complaints. When you go in for periodic service, ask the service MANAGER whether there are any drive-by-wire software updates in the wind. (Service WRITERS are morons - don't bother trying to get a straight answer from them.) I suspect eventually Toyota will respond with an updated software download.

"If you have Alloys and the spare is steel, you still look goofy."

Good thing the spare was alloy too or I'd be the laughing stock of the neighborhood. :P

Sorry for the misinformation about the tires, and thanks for the correction!
  • tidewatertidewater Member Posts: 69
Well said Jaxs1. That choice principal applies to all the options. With Toyota, you just decide between option combination 1, 2 (or 3 in some regions) - from the toyota build your own vehicle website. (I realize there are cars made outside of these choices, but they are very few and far between).

I was showing off my new 07 Camry LE when someone asked where that paper with mileage per gallon / options / etc.
is that you see on the inside of a door window that comes
with each new car is . It was never there when I picked up the car from the dealer { the car had 3 miles on it } . Someone mentioned that it's federal law that the list comes with each new car .
The car is 1 week old .
    Any info on this ?
  • jaxs1jaxs1 Member Posts: 2,697
It is theoretically a stand alone option on paper, but in reality it is not. The way the cars are optioned is set at a regional level and not on a car-by-car basis.
Try going through the charade of ordering Smart Key without the other options predetermined for your region then wait 12 weeks for the order to be rejected.
The brochures and ordering guides list all the "potential" ways they car could possibly be optioned, but the cars are only manufactured in a limited number of configurations which are subject to change.

You are entitled to the window sticker by law, so go back to the dealer and demand it!

If they lost it, Toyota can produce another one.
  • txs_yankeetxs_yankee Member Posts: 3
Monroney Sticker Price Required by federal law, this label affixed to the car window shows the base price, the manufacturer's installed options with the manufacturer's suggested retail price, the manufacturer's freight or transportation charge, and the fuel economy (mileage). The label may not be removed by anyone other than the purchaser
The Monroney sticker — as it is called in the auto industry — is named for the late Almer Stillwell "Mike" Monroney, a senator from Oklahoma who sponsored the
federal Automobile Information Disclosure Act in 1958. This statute requires that a sticker be affixed to the side window or windshield of every new car sold in the
United States. While the law does not specifically mandate Monroney stickers for some trucks, automakers affix them across their entire vehicle lineups. Failure to display one can result in a fine of $10,000 per vehicle to the dealership.

    >>>Do you know of a way to retrofit seat/mirror memory into the 2007 Camry?
Hi. If the option does not exist on the car, you cannot retrofit it. I cannot find any option list with memory seat / mirror on it.SorryJohn

Just got my new Camry and already have bugs attacking the front end. Anyone have any experience with this product, currently listed on ebay?

Does anyone have a 2-3 inch "scratch" in the bottom backside of their steering wheel (non-leather camry LE)? It looks and feels like a big scratch. I looked at other Camrys on the lot (So.Cal), and they also have this. The customer service rep said that it's a "factory defect" for all the camrys and "nothing can be done about it." True? It's annyoing when you feel it every day in your hands while driving.
  • spiff72spiff72 Member Posts: 179
Is it a scratch, or could it be a parting line on a plastic part (a raised line that can be left over during the molding process)?
  • lonewolf1187lonewolf1187 Member Posts: 10
i recently put up an order for a 2007 Camry SE in Barcelona Red Metallic. I was wondering if anyone already have this car in this color yet. Is it the same color as the current Solara or is it more like the G35 red?
  • spiff72spiff72 Member Posts: 179
There are a few pictures at greenhybrid.com. Just go the the site, click on the "Share" button at the top, and then pick the Toyota Camry Hybrid section. They are on the last page.

I would post a link, but I think that is frowned upon here (links to other forums)...
  • caddyjohncaddyjohn Member Posts: 16
    >>>Barcelona Red Metallic

The car is a RED red, not a burgundy or a maroon. I dunno about Solara, all I know is that I had a 2000 gs300 in Cinnabar Pearl and I prefer the Camry!John
  • marvin01marvin01 Member Posts: 3
nope, it's definitely not a raised line...it has a deeper "gouged-out" appearance, 2mm wide x couple inches long. Still, I think I agree that it might be due to the molding process, and not by an actual trauma to the part (since other camrys on the lot had the same thing). I'm going to take it into the service dept this weekend to see what they say. thanks
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
Agree, it's tomato red, so if you like REAL red, this is it!
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
If that's the biggest problem you can find in your Camry, congrats!

I remember when "new" cars wouldn't even start! (Like my infamous '75 Rabbit when it was only 3+ months old.)
  • lonewolf1187lonewolf1187 Member Posts: 10
ya everyone i know said that it was true red and not any shades different. does anyone know if this matches to the lancer evo or g35 reds? i've never seen these colors compared in real life and the internet photos do no justice
  • dhgdhg Member Posts: 9
My Evo is the rally red, just a nice solid bright red. The Camry is a little lighter, but it is a metalic paint and is very very nice. If you want to stand out that is the color to get. I could only handle one red car in the family, so i picked the metalic gray for my SE, looks classy not racy.

Is anyone experiencing the same issue having a noise from the gas tank when the tank is full.
It sounds like a bowling ball rolling around in the trunk or like when you move a water bottle (water moving around, slushing back and forth)...in this care fuel bouncing around the tank.
It happens when the car start moving or when stopping.
Do you know what this could be? Is it the tank float?

I would like to order an XLE Camry but have never done that before. Can someone tell me the procedures on how to order an Camry?

    Thanks,
    Mary
  • kiawahkiawah Member Posts: 3,666
Go to a Toyota dealer, tell the salesman the color and features you are interested in, he will check inventories and tell you whether they have one in stock, can get one from another dealer, or can order it if they have to, agree on a price, sign an agreement to purchase, put down a nominal deposit, wait for car to come in, drive away happy :) .

If you want....you can also go to the Toyota website, put in your zipcode, and check inventories and features on the available cars. That will give you some idea as to whether there appears to be any cars in the regional inventory which match the features as to what you are looking for.

    Good luck
  • samchinchsamchinch Member Posts: 47
What you are hearing is that gas sloshing around the tank. It is because the gas tank is made of a composite material (Plastic)it causes resonation. I have a composite gas tank on my Chrysler LHS and it does the same thing.
  • spiff72spiff72 Member Posts: 179
Actually, going to the toyota web site and entering your zip code won't necessarily give you a look at inventory. For example, in my zip code (49460), you only get the option to "build" your vehicle and request a quote. You can't see inventory. I think I would like it better the way they do it in the southeast, but they have other issues with dealer-installed "fluff" from what I hear...
  • kiawahkiawah Member Posts: 3,666
Oh wow, I see your website screens for that area are all different. Guess it depends which area of the country one is in.

Sometimes (mainly when I pull into my garage), it sounds more like a bowling ball "thumping" sound rather than sloshing. I want to have the dealer look at it, but it is quite infrequent and hard to duplicate. However, if I don't get it fixed (if possible), it'll drive me nuts :-(
  • ray_h1ray_h1 Member Posts: 1,134
Quite a few '06 Hyundai Sonata owners have the same complaint about their cars' fuel tanks. Rejoice! You're in good company... :)
  • moeharrimoeharri Member Posts: 108
My noise is coming from the rear passenger side anyway--would that correlate to where I (think) hear gas sloshing? The gas cap is on the driver's side.
  • samchinchsamchinch Member Posts: 47
I said sloshing but it does sound like a thump. I know what you are talking about and there is no way to fix it because having a composite (plastic) gas tanks causes it. I guess you could always get someone to make you a custom metal tank. Plastic tanks resonate sound and but at least they don't rust.
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
I got news for you guys - the '07 Camry, like its predecessors, has a steel tank. I just checked one out!

Can one expect a greater life expectancy of the v6 versus the I4? If so by how much?
  • kdhspyderkdhspyder Member Posts: 7,160
How far past 300,000 miles do you want to drive either?
    Seriously.
  • blackcamryblackcamry Member Posts: 16
    Moeharri...fill up the tank...full
You won't miss the noise...when you back up or stop or start driving...
Keep me posted what you find...

    210delray...
what needs to be done? my old car (1998 Chevy) doesn't even have this noise...kind of odd for a current car to have this noise/problem

I found a bag of parts in the trunk of my 2007 Camry LE.

The bag contains 2 plastic bracket like part (about 8 inches in length) and 6 screws. I can't seem to find anywhere to fit these. I seem to recall these are license plate holder, but I can't seem to figure out how it is going to work. Does anyone have a clue on what this is?
