I have an offer for a Desert Rock with Ivory interior...My preference is white with Ivory because I need the vehicle to stay as cool as possible in hot weather. I tend to think from pics of the desert rock color, that this color would cause the vehicle to get hotter than a white colored vehicle.

My question to anyone interested is this..

Is the Desert Rock color considered a dark or light color?

    TIA!

I consider Desert Rock a decidedly light color. While it will probably retain more heat than white, I doubt you'd ever be able to tell the difference.
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
We have five cars in our family. Our Ody is dark blue(midnight blue pearl); the Caddy CTS is dark blue; the Lincoln Continental is BLACK; the Mitsubishi Galant is dark green; and the Malibu is white.

With the AC in use during summer, I cannot detect any difference in comfort level(i.e. regarding heat radiation inside the vehicles) while driving any of the vehicles. So as far as we are concerned, colors make no difference unless one intends to not buy a car with AC or not use it if you have it.

Colors DO make a difference in the inability to hide dust and dirt.

My 2 cents worth: The more I drive my 05 EX-L the more satisfied and pleased I am with it. Handles fantastic, excellent quality, none of the problems frequently mentioned by some. Except for not having day-running lights this 05 Odyssey is to me as close to a perfect Van as you can currently purchase. One of the very few Vans to offer seating for three on the 2nd row of seats combined with automatic climate control, moon roof, heated seats & reasonably priced etc. Love it!!

go to HandA for the xm receiver and install it yourself
  • emaneman Member Posts: 85
I complained in previous posts that the 05 EXL transmits much too much road noise into the cabin. I recently drove a Touring and can't say that it was much better. and although the touring radio had more power, it suffers the same poor FM reception due to the window antenna.

bottom line guys- its a great SAFE van for your wife to drive the kids around, ie a great second car.

As a prime vehicle, in retrospect, I would have loved to pay more a few bucks more for more refinement in these areas.

To would be buyers - take one for a good long ride and when in doubt wait another year. HOnda Brass has people screening these sites for comments.

We were diehard Mazda fans ( 2 vans and a truck). Until discovering this website, we had only looked at the Toyota and the Dodge as an “upgrade” to our MPV. However, we could not agree on which van would be the best to go with. I began comparing the features of the Ody to the needs of our family and they fit perfectly.

I wanted to thank each of you for your information and advise regarding our recent purchase. We are now owners of a black/ivory '05 EX-L. My family and I moved up from an '02 MPV (due to a new baby) because it offered us so much more room for a family of 7 (well, 10 if you count our Lab and 2 birds :-). Sadly, we dealt with several local dealers who wanted $1500.00+ over MSRP AND wanted to lowball us on our trade-in. One even threatened us by stating should we buy our vehicle elsewhere- any service we required from their dealership will be considered less than a priority

We had to go out of the state to get a good deal on our trade in. Deland Honda located in Florida was the only one we found willing to give us more than trade-in-value on our ’02 MPV van. (We had 70,000+ miles on it, but it was in good shape with TV tuner, DVD player, roof rack, etc). This all began thanksgiving weekend as we were driving back to GA and happened to see a billboard on I-4 for Deland Honda exit 116. We decided, “Hey what do we have to lose.” We exited the interstate and finally found the dealership (it’s small to average in size). We got there about 6pm and they were getting ready to close. They had 2 EXL’s on the lot that was just delivered; but they were the wrong color. (They had just sold the black EXL-R&N that morning).

Anyway, they stayed open and talked to us. Although it was past closing time, they treated our children well. The boys made themselves "at home" in the showroom - but amid all the "sit downs" "stop its" and "that's enoughs" :-) we were able to determine that this dealership might be the one to earn our business. The sticking point for us was not paying anything else on the MPV. (The sale guy originally started at the same price we were quoted by the other dealers in GA (Tampa and Orlando, Florida) also - we went back and forth on the amount we were willing to accept. The GM (he dealt with us directly - not just playing games between the sales guy and the "hidden boss"). By the end of the conversation, they offered us more than what we had been quoted but it still was not pay-off. Finally, we left and told them we would call them back and let them know our decision. When we did call back the next day (last Sunday of the month) it was to tell them that were would continue to look elsewhere, but the GM stated that he would meet our asking amount on the trade. Needless to say, we were still cautious about how things would end up and waited for the "other shoe" to drop.

The GM (Tom) stated that he would have to order the vehicle. The following 2 weeks we held our breaths and waited for the bait and switch to take place. He returned our calls each time we called to check on the progress and later informed us that the vehicle was in production for 19 Dec and would be delivered in 2 -3 days. True to his word, on 22 Dec Steven called and announced our Ody’s arrival. They were willing to drive it to us in GA but we were returning to Florida for Christmas and decided to pick it up ourselves on the 24th. When we got there Steven met us and had the van sitting in front of the dealership. While the entire waiting process took us about a month, the actual dealership time was about 1:45 minutes on the day we closed the deal and probably 2 hours the day we initially negotiated the deal.

Considering everything was done by faxes, telephone calls and e-mails prior to us arriving, it was certainly a great buying experience. One that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a dealership with great selling practices and even greater customer service I obtained their permission to list them here as they pride themselves on being a no pressure dealership. Steven (Sales), Tom (GM) and Marty (F&I) made this experience a excellent one.....Well, all in all my family and I are happy with the purchase and the great features of the Ody. We are planning to install a Panasonic 9" LCD DVD/SD player (roof mounted) and Pioneer AVIC-N1 navigation system with the backup camera (saw it in this forum) on Thursday. I hope that my experience can help someone else to locate and purchase the vehicle of his or her choice. Good luck and I recommend that you try www.delandhonda.com - they came through for us just when we were thinking about waiting until the summer.

p.s. Will post pictures once it quits raining here in GA <smile>

has anybody used this? How do we get it to work? Following the directions in the manual...nothing happens! Does it need to be activated? should the dealer have done this? How do I get it to work or atleast sample it? Please help....

I would think the outside color of the car would have less to do with how hot it gets inside than the inside color. The outside is just metal with some reflective properties. The inside tends to absorb the heat from sunlight. We live in Colo. (300 plus days of sun a year and 90 degree summers) and have a silver car with gray cloth interior and a medium blue SUV with black leather interior. The leather gets hot if in direct sunlight, but both cars get hot in the summer if closed up, neither more so than the other. FYI, I think the red Ody's are nice.

Anyone having the following problem on the 05 Odyssey (we have an EX)?

We lost power while driving, the engine malfunction light came on and the VSA went off (VSA off light came on). After that, we couldn't go over 20 miles/h.

Towed it to the dealer, but they're not sure what's wrong yet and are pulling the data to send to the engineers at Honda. There are also other 05 Odysseys in the shop there that have been there a couple of days with the same problem. What's going on?
  • thumperthumper Member Posts: 75
Dunno what the procedure is. Ours was online when we got the van. You should get 3 months free trial, so I'd say probably go back and have the dealer set it up. Or not. If you never sample it you won't be lured into spending money on the subscription. :)

Have they run the check on the misaligned ABS wheelspeed sensor? If your van is in the VIN range, it might be installed improperly, which could trip off a whole range of errors. It's worth a shot, anyway.

    Good luck!

I was thinking about trading my 01 Ody with 105,000 flawless miles. I was dismayed to find no 2004's left in inventories so I BREIFLY considered the 05. Now I have to find an alternate.

The "run flat" tires (not an option), transmission shifter on the console (I'd buy a Sienna for that) and the generic exterior styling all combined to turn me off to this vehicle.

After examining the feedback here, it seems to be a wise decision. It will be interesting to see how long the dealers will demand and get MSRP for this vehicle. The answer to that may upset some of the "Gotta Have The First" crowd.

Is it crazy to prefer the base Touring to an EX-L with NAV and Rear entertainment?

Both cost about the same $35k MSRP.

I am tall and like the power pedals in the touring for extra seating flexibility. I also like the built in parking sensors. Leather is preferred. Black leather, specifically which only comes on the touring. Run-flats leave me cold but the better stereo is nice. But the real reason for me to prefer the Touring to the EX-L is the power pedals and parking sensors.

$35k hits some resistance threshold for me on a van. I would prefer to spend $30k on the EX-L but I want those power pedals! :-)

I am guessing an EX-L with Navigation and RES would have better resale than a touring without. So am I crazy to prefer the base Touring trim?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
2004's have been LONG gone from dealer inventories! You don't have to have run flat tires. They ONLY come on the Tourings.

As far as the shifter and the styling...can't help you there. to each his/her own.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Crazy? Not in the least. Buy the vehicle that best suits your needs.

I haven't checked but doubt that Nav or RES retains much of its value on a used car - pricey options rarely do. If you're really curious, price a few used vans of various years with and without these options.

Last thought - you may well be able to buy a base Touring for less than an EX-L R&N.
  • denver5357denver5357 Member Posts: 319
I had the saleperson I bought an EX-L with RES and NAVI ask me at first if I would be interested in a Touring. And my wife wanted the power rear gate and auto on/off lights. But those PAX tires kept me away.

And while MSRP may be close, the actual price paid may not, depending on inventory and negotiating skills. Of course, you could benefit either way based on those factors for each model.
  • jchan2jchan2 Member Posts: 4,956
a few posts back that the Touring non NAV/RES models had discounts on them.
  • emaneman Member Posts: 85
xm radio only comes in the Touring and with 3 month subscription.

IN EX and L the radio is ready only for the connecting wire so you can control the input on the radio. You need to buy the xm receiver that goes under the drivers seat.

Go to the HandA website and look up the xm receiver and they also show install instructions
  • tinlittletinlittle Member Posts: 21
Touring is simply overpriced. And as such, it is heavily discounted right now. Especially those barebone touring without NAV. Everywhere I look, base touring can be had for invoice and EX-L with NAV is close to MSRP. So touring would be great for you cost wise. Also keep in mind, parking sensor could be installed as an accessary for EX-L.
  • nowakj66nowakj66 Member Posts: 709
The Key is the power pedals. If I fit in an EX-L without the power pedals, then at $5k less MSRP, it is the way to go.

I wonder how much adding the parking sensors at the dealer would add to an EX-L?
  • mingdermingder Member Posts: 12
I thought the XM Radio comes with Navi, and has nothing to do with Touring, EX or EX-L trim. Am I correct?
  • jeffinrtpjeffinrtp Member Posts: 21
As I interpret the fine print in the Odyssey Fact Sheet (see Honda web site), you get an actual XM radio only if you purchased an EX-L or Touring WITH the Nav & DVD. For all other EX, EX-L or Touring configuations, all you got was an "XM-ready" radio. "XM-ready" means that you need to purchase separately the tuner, cables and antenna hardware (and have it installed).
  • elaineelaine Member Posts: 17
I have an EX-L with Nav/RES. I drove it off the lot with XM up and working. I did not have to add/buy/do anything. The 3 month trial membership had already been activated by the dealer.

It is nice that using your nav screen, you can see the singer/song title playing. But, not sure I'll pay for subscription when 3 months is up.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
XM radio is fantastic! I would be willing to bet you won't want to give it up once you get used to it.
  • xanaduxanadu Member Posts: 1
We bought our Odyssey a week ago and feel the same way. The car rattles like it has no struts or shocks. I bought this car because of Honda's reputation for quality. I am totally disenchanted by this van.I am thinking of returning and trying to get my money back.
  • kmd99kmd99 Member Posts: 13
Has anyone purchased and installed the XM radio tuner and hardware on an XM-ready radio? What was your experience?
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
I am wondering whether the tire pressure was set too high in some of these Odys by mistake. The tire pressure is supposed to be 35 PSI max cold. If the the pressure is much higher, like someone stated as 44 PSI recently, then this may account for a very rough ride.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
It's definitely the tires - time for an upgrade, lol.

Thanks for some much needed insight Steve.

BTW - Do you think Tire Rack would have those in the right size for my Impala? They look really tempting!
  • thumperthumper Member Posts: 75
Just waiting for tire companies to start providing a wider selection in this daffy tire size. Then we'll talk about the monster upgrade. :)

Did you ask a Honda dealer to run a inventory locator for a remaining '04? I did and my dealer found about 20 '04s (EX and above) at other California dealerships, mostly in SoCal.
  • surferjoesurferjoe Member Posts: 18
XM is definitely the way to go. We've had our 2005 Odyssey for six weeks now and have all but given up on FM radio. $10 a month is a fair price.
  • onboost91onboost91 Member Posts: 86
Could those of you with the R/N or the RES verify that you have a standard power outlet in the 3rd driver side compartment where the external video jacks are. My manual shows that there is a flip up piece there that reveals it. Mine, however just has a hard plastic tab there which is not removable. I can't seem to find anywhere to plug in an external audio/video device.

    Thanks in advance.
  • jeffinrtpjeffinrtp Member Posts: 21
The 115 volt 3rd row power outlet comes on the Touring model only, regardless of RES or NAV. My EXL-RES does not have one. I agree, the owners manual can be confusing because it does not always indicate which model has which feature.
  • onboost91onboost91 Member Posts: 86
Hmmmm, does that mean there is no way to plug in a Playstation or any other standard audio/video device w/out using a converter?
  • li_285li_285 Member Posts: 29
Same here although only driver side door has problem. I just bought a 2005 Odyssey EX 6 days ago in a bay area dealer. I have found that it is hard to close the driver door. Basically sometimes I have to close a few times to get one right. It is very easy for the door to bounce back from the closing action. I brought my car in this morning and dealer adjusted the latch but did not solve the problem. They said there was air pocket in the car if all glasses are raised. If I lower the glass all the way down, it is rather easy to close. However, even if I lowered a little bit to let the air out supposedly, it still did not work well. The dealer is going to talk to American Honda about this. Has anybody else experienced this problem before?
  • tedreyestedreyes Member Posts: 7
I am having an issue with the driver door as well. It takes an extra-strong push to ensure the door is closed. Hopefully it will break-in and become easier. If it keeps up, I'll talk to the dealer.
  • jeffinrtpjeffinrtp Member Posts: 21
Correct. You'll need to get a converter to power any household equipment. You can get a fairly powerful one for under $50.
  • engenlowengenlow Member Posts: 10
    1) Also add exterior perimeter lights that turn on when you unlock the doors. My friends Taurus has them under the mirrors and they are really nice at night.

    2) Front doors that unlock when the vehicle is in park and you pull the handle instead of having to unlock them.

    3) Move the outside temp. guage away from the odometer so passengers can see it.

    4) Front windows that squegee the water off of them when you open/close them. Never had a car that would not do this.

    5) Front windows that do not drip rain water directly onto the door, mirror, window switches when at a drive thru.

We just purchased a new Odyssey runs excellent except there is one sticky gearshift that stick while in Park the chrome piece in the shifter remains stock for a minute or more which is an eternity when you are trying to exit the vehicle . Does anyone had this problem and knows how to corrected ? Of course there is always the dealer , but I would like to know in advance what might be , never have dealt with this dealer before.

     Thank you.

I found Jay Honda in Bedford, OH by trolling the boards here at Edmunds and bought my wife's 2003 EX-L RES from them. They had someone drive it to me in MD - it was a great deal. I have since referred a few others there including my brother-in-law who just bought an '05 EXL-RES/Navi. They flew him there to pick it up and drive it home. He got to test the Navi pretty good and verified it works perfectly. It was $2,000 below MSRP - no haggling, no problems. Another satisfied Customer. Anyway, he showed me the van over the holidays and all I can say is "Wow"! Big differences from the "old" one we have. He loves the XM because it gives you realtime sports scores as you listen to the game and everything integrates so nicely into the system. He sold his 2001 Odyssey to get this one and couldn't be happier. Good luck out there folks!

"XM is definitely the way to go. We've had our 2005 Odyssey for six weeks now and have all but given up on FM radio."

Give it six months and you might just go back to FM. The crappy repeating songs selection gets pretty old fast.

"2) Front doors that unlock when the vehicle is in park and you pull the handle instead of having to unlock them."

You can have that on the Touring.

    Hi,

I have 05 ody with DVD. Everything works well except radio and DVD. My DVD doesn't work well in the cold weather (-25c). I took long time to show the picture. Have anyone had the same problem?

    Thanks

Today when I started my one week old 2005 Odyssey EX and put it on R, I heard continuous sharp sound (like a warning sound sort). I checked everything and the sound was still there driving me crazy. Finally I went outside and opened and closed each door and the sound went away. I did not know what was going on? Has anyone experienced before? I would say now it was a bad decision for me to buy a Odyssey. I had two problems already in one week.
  • luckylouluckylou Member Posts: 308
We bought a 2005 Odyssey Touring last week , we notice the sound and our investigation shows : to the left of steering wheel is a switch with the letter P if the light is green push it in that means Off (no light) the warning should go away.

We got the problem of the gearshift stick , not releasing

the chrome piece (where the thumb presses) to allow the ignition key to be remove, is very annoying sometimes it takes more than a minute. Back to the dealer.

I posted about a "songbird" on my front window a few pages back. But the whistling sound disappeared after a long trip with the defrost on most of the way. I don't know if the heat helped relax the window cowl, but it is almost flush now, while before it had about a 1/4 or 3/16 inch gap between it and the windshield. Strange, but this Ody is extremely quiet now, no wind noise at all.

Hope any more problems I might have evaporate as easily as this.
  • ace1000ace1000 Member Posts: 151
The switch with a P is the switch that controls the Parking Sensor System (page 271 of the owner's manual). What you did is turn off the parking sensors. The EX does not have this system. The rear sensors are a dealer-installed option for the EX, which the sales person at my dealer told me costs over $900. The previous person's problem may have been due to a door being open. You need to check the Open Door Monitor on the dash when this happens again.

I had to parallel park my EX in San Francisco in a tight space between two BMW's. Right when I started to back up, a cab pulled up behind me and stopped to pick up a passenger, so I had to make sure I didn't hit the cab as well. This was the first time I parallel parked the van, and it turned out to be pretty easy. I got it in perfectly on the second try. The BMW in the back was at the end of the curb, so he could back up to get out. To give myself and the car in front of me more room to get out, I wanted to park close to the car in back. The visibility out the van is great, and I was able to park the van about 6 inches away from the car in back by just looking out the rear window.

The parking sensors may have made it harder to park because they would have been sounding continuously two feet away, which wouldn't have helped me in this tight space. I was thinking about getting the Honda parking sensors or an aftermarket system, but based on how easy it was to parallel park the van, I now think I won't. The sensors may be more of an annoyance than a help because they would be beeping when they weren't needed and not being able to signal when the van was closer than 2 feet from an object.
