I guess many American cars offer this "auto lock" feature but not Honda.

If I want to lock my doors while I'm driving it's easy to hit the switch!
  • w210w210 Member Posts: 188
Better yet, it's programmable allowing one to:

    1. lock all when transmission goes from P to D.

    2. lock all when vehicle hits certain speed.

Some fancy unlocking programming (key off or D to P), very cool.

Your beginning to see the light also! Congrats!

Just like the manual tranny that less than 5% want!

It is a safety/security factor while driving in unsafe/unfamiliar territory and one forgets to do the manual thing. Forgetting is easy to do.

If the domestics(Ford, Chrysler) can offer it, why not the Japanese?

I am with isellhonda here on the auto locking. If I want the door to lock, I'll push the button myself. I see this as a potential safety issue in case of a crash. Does the door automatically unlock in case of a crash? If not, how much more time will any potential rescuer need to get inside a burning or crushed vehicle? Will the locks short out if the vehicle is suddenly under water? Think about it. I'd rather drive with the doors unlocked.

On December 23rd my wife and I went to the Honda dealer in Myrtle Beach, SC. (East Coast Honda) We purchased an Odyssey. (2005 Touring)

The Business Manager told me that the 2.9% financing was based on purchasing the extended warranty and that if I did not want the extended warranty then the finance charge would go up. She even did some math for us that illustrated that it was a "better deal" to get the warranty and the 2.9% financing.

I confronted her on this and said I thought that it was illegal to offer it that way. She assured me that it was not. So we got the warranty.

After I have thought about this some more I really think that it is.

Do you have any feedback on this? Thanks

    Mike

Breaking the glass would be first and easiest thing to do to have the safety/security from intruders in unfamiliar places with auto-locks.
  • macakavamacakava Member Posts: 775
How do you program it for autolock?

Many of us would be interested in knowing for our Odys. It should be possible for EX and above models with electric sliders.

Isellhondas: Can you share some light into this?
  • mikeo1mikeo1 Member Posts: 53
    Sounds perfectly legal to me.

You didn't have to finance through Honda

and the decision was yours to make.
  • mikeo1mikeo1 Member Posts: 53
No thanks on the auto lock....

    very irritating.

Honda made the right call IMO.
  • dave594dave594 Member Posts: 218
I prefer to drive with the doors unlocked. The auto locking I have seen in GM rentals are very annoying. It's a nanny feature I can do without.

    Will the '05 really do a 160mph?

Anyone tried yet?(without the kids of course)
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
My Sienna has auto locks, but they can be programmed not to engage. Also, even when they are engaged, you can open the door from the inside without pressing the 'unlock' button. So a 'panic' exit is no problem, even when the doors are locked.
  • just4fun2just4fun2 Member Posts: 461
I agree, if the doors lock automatically then they should unlock automatically, my van does and I like that.

You can just add this auto locking feature to the list of things that will be debated forever such as....daytime running lights and automatic headlights.

If you don't want some stranger car jacking your vehicle the automatic door locks are just the ticket. I have them on my Sebring convertible and have never felt safer with the doors lock and the top down. :)
  • dave594dave594 Member Posts: 218
I'm more worried about rescuers opening the doors from the outside. Years ago I witnessed a crash and my friends and I pulled a man out of a wreck. If the door had been locked, we would not have been able to do that. I don't believe the locks will disengage automatically allowing someone to open them from the outside in case of a crash.
  • innorristninnorristn Member Posts: 39
On the Touring, you can also program it to NOT automatically lock - which is my preference. My husband's 4Runner automatically locks, and it drives me crazy because he often will pull up to the door of a restaurant and let me out to go put our name "on the list" and it won't let me unlock my door until he puts it in park.

If I remember correctly, each driver chooses their locking preference using the information screens, which may only be available on the Touring.

My new '05 Odyssey has a rattle/noise in the area of the passenger sliding door when I drive over rough pavement. I took it in to the dealer and told them I thought it was in the door. They replaced the handle crank assembly, but it didn't fix the noise. The noise sounds to me like a thin sheet of metal rattling - it's kind of high pitched. Has anyone else had this problem?
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Yeah, on the Tourings you can do this but I don't remember how right now as I sit at home. I think it would take a week of reading the owner's manual to discover everything you can do!
  • richardnvarichardnva Member Posts: 91
Didn't see any replies to your post.

Are you still looking for the Touring?

I live in Richmond, VA and am looking for a Touring as well. The internet sales contact at Sheehy Honda seems to be pretty good. The first quote was at MSRP. I'm waiting on a response to see if they'll come down on that. Have you had any luck getting below MSRP?

The tie-in with only giving the 2.9% rate with the purchase of the extended warranty doesn't quite add up to me, Mike.

Usually extended warranties are cancellable for a period after purchase. It'd be interesting to tell the dealer you are going to cancel the warranty and see what gyrations they try to go through to redo the financing deal.

Especially since the 2.9% is offered as a Honda incentive in my zip code right not.

Have you done your survey yet? I think a note to Honda USA about this dealer's practice would be in order. Robr's suggestion over in Prices Paid is good too. Incentives may vary but I bet Honda didn't have this little profit booster in mind (markup on extended warranties is hefty).

Puzzling. But if that is how the VIN works, then that's me. There are five numbers earlier in my VIN, after the first 5 numbers/letters, that put it in the 38Ks, but apparently I want the LAST six numbers? I will check the door jams to see if it has an assembly date. Though again it had 11 miles on it when we bought it.

OK, this is the second funniest post I have read here in the past three weeks. :-)

The decison was his to make, and, if that was the actual terms of the offer, I'd agree there's nothing illegal about linking the two. But if the salesperson misrepresented the terms of the financing offer, it's still actionable regardless. I've never heard of a tie-in between financing offers and warranties from a manufacturer, but I suppose it could be something the dealership put together. If I were the person, I'd be just as concerned about what he paid for the warranty, since that could dwarf any savings from low rate financing.

Better ask one of those guys racing this thing on the track.

I've had my '94 BMW 540i up to 150mph here (250 kph), but only on a downhill piece of Autobahn that was newly built two years ago (extremely smooth surface) and very lightly traveled. I don't think I'll experiment with my Ody much above 100 mph, or with kids 80 mph.

Related question on that topic: Can anyone tell me if I need the accessory transmission cooler for sustained speeds above 75 mph? Isellhondas, what do you know about this? Can this thing run all day at 150 mph like the BMW (by the way, it has an oil pan that holds 7.5 quarts!)

    Thanks Steve.

This was purchased on December 23rd. End of year offer in Myrtle Beach SC.

I have since contacted the dealer and they are willing to 'fix' the problem. Refund the warranty.

I have also notified the SC Attorney Generals office and Called American Honda.

    This IS illeagal.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,567
might be the difference between required and offered.

If they say they will give you a lower rate if you buy the warranty, that's just a business decision. They dont have to offer you financing at all, and can mark it up (although some rules do govern it).

Different matter if they misrepresent a manufacturers program as requiring you to buy a warranty to get the promotional rate.

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The only other issue you may want to consider is that if you really want the extended warranty, you may not be able to get a Honda backed one elsewhere. Other posters have said that once you cancel the Honda one, you can't go back and buy another.

It that's a factor, you may want to ask the dealer to cut the price and keep the one you have. How the dealer reacts to that scenario may affect how or to who you complain about the tie-in.

    "Will the '05 really do a 160mph?"

For what possible reason do you think it MIGHT go 160mph????? Has anyone posted anywhere that it would do that? The Ody has to move a LOT of air.

Personally, I think the only way it would break 130 is if you dropped one out the back of a C130.....
  • rduelrduel Member Posts: 39
My 2000 EX has intermittent rattles in the right slider that the dealer could not fix since delivery in 1999. There are small compression springs on the electrical contact points on the forward part of the door section. If you move those around rapidly, that's what the noise sounds like, but I don't think that's what it is. I had hoped Honda would have addressed the rattle issues in five years. Another rattle is the interior door handle that shakes on rough roads. One would think it would be an easy fix, but apparently not.

    Well....

the speedometer reads 160 in the '05's

vs. 140 in the previous models so

    I'm just curious.

Since 60's Corvette speedometers read 160

my 10 year old is pretty convinced that the

    '05 is is a muscle mini-van.

    Btw...if it won't do a 160,

    isn't this false advertising? :)
  • mikeo1mikeo1 Member Posts: 53
    Steve,

I really don't see the problem here.

Nobody has a gun to your head forcing

you to take the extended warranty.

It would make good business sense that if

you accept the "package deal" you can't

cancel the extended warranty portion at a later date.
  • markkmarkk Member Posts: 1
We bought our EX-L on 12-31 and got the 2.9%. We did not have to include an extended warrenty with it. I would question then more on having to do this. It may be best to contact Honda's customer service or Honda finacne about it.

    A few points:

    1. Don't believe everything you read (that includes speedometers.)

    2. Previous edition Ody's wouldn't go 140 either.

    3. 10-year olds can convince themselves of all KINDS of nonsense. I know; I'm still 10 at heart.

    4. I'm still hoping someone will drop an Ody out of the back of a C130. I'm REALLY curious about what kind of terminal velocity could be achieved...

    al b.

My EX-L NAV/DVD had that rattle and I took it in for dealer to check out. It was due to loose headling they said. They fixed it in November. However, recently, I started to hear that rattle again only when it is cold (30F and below). Especially when I pulled out of driveway, it will rattle for a while until the temperature in the car rises up. I talked to my dealer again for this and they said I may want to wait until my first oil change since some plastic parts may have to "fit-in" with each other in a new car. I will see what happen later. Please post if you or your dealer find out something wrong with the rattle.

FWIW: a guy I work with claims he had his '03 at 130MPH and there was additional throttle remaining.

How about with a tailwind assist? ;)
  • rorrrorr Member Posts: 3,630
I'm just wondering how accurate the speedometer was?

    Random thoughts:

    Tailwind.

    Downhill.

    Some guy at work claims.....

Does he have a 4" exhaust tip? We all know those are good for at least 25hp...

Apparently it's illegal (in some states anyway) to tie-in a loan with something else, like the purchase of an extended warranty. (link)

    I liked this post too:

"Yes, I strongly believe in extended warranties if (a) you're going to keep a vehicle for a long time and (b), it's not a Honda, Toyota, or Nissan."

Macakava, on the Touring, all you do is to press and hold the 'i' button on the steering wheel when your car is idling, it will display on the dash below the speedometer whether you want to change the key dependent settings.

You can program it anyway you want, lock by speed/transmission selection, unlock by P or key off ignition, etc.

Sorry I'm not sure how it goes in an EX.

Another neat feature is the programmable 'one-touch-unlocks-all' like the European cars.

On the Touring remote, you press and hold the 'lock' and 'passenger sliding door' buttons and it'll recycle between 'one-touch-unlocks-all' and the default 'one-touch-unlocks-driver's-door-only'.

The beauty is that the above features are all, as others mentioned, key dependent.
  • w210w210 Member Posts: 188
I know fowithr BMW and Mercedes, all doors will automatically unlock and the car will turn on the blinkers by itself in a crash. The Mercedes teleaid system (if you subscribe to the service) will even call the help center and big brother/sister will come on the microphone and ask if you're ok and dispatch help if needed.

My favorite door lock system is the Mercedes, on the passenger's side, if you pull the door handle from the inside, the door will automatically unlock. This way, when my wife gets off the car and returns, her particular door will remain unlocked.

One thing I like about Honda door handles is that they're the 'looped type' meaning you can get a good grip to pull a door opened in an emergency.

January 28, 2003 the 108 Congress passed H.R. 400 that requires cars manufactured after 2005 will have equimpment that auto locks the doors when

           A. Transmissions is engaged or

           B. The vehicle reaches a specific speed.

Got a link? All I found was that the proposed law went to committee, where it apparently still sits. Say it ain't so :-).

    link

Seems like something happened with interior-opening trunk locks a while back, and that's also addressed in this bill.

Every time a few seconds after I started to drive my EX, I could feel one vibration from the gas pedal which sort of like locking or unlocking something. Has anyone else have felt this?
