    Hi Doglady:

Please do keep us posted on what is happening with the seat. I have an Odyssey EX-cloth and it is causing me serious back pain. When we tested drove the EX-leath, I noticed the seat issue. I thought I can avoid the problem by going to the cloth model. But it wasn't the case.

bad news - the only part of the seats that could be modified by the uphoster is the back support of the drivers seat, the bottom of both seats and back of passenger seat have a bunch of wires in them for the air bags and the uphoster wouldn't touch them. They did modify the back of the drivers seat to be like a 'normal' seat and that helped alot but did not totally eliminate the pain. This process took almost 3 weeks, my back quit hurting during this time so I'm convinced it's the Honda seats. I use 'obus forme' cushions right now and have rituals I do while driving to make it tolerable. My husband jumped in it with no cushions for a 5 hour trip and vowed that he would never ride in the van again, even bought another car the next week since his old car was not reliable enough for trips. See posts #3389 and #3395, someone suggested another kind of cushion, I have ordered it to see if it elminates the pain. Thanks for the info about the leather seats, I have a 'locator' out for a wrecked 05 with leather seats but it sounds like the leather seats aren't any better. Pleeeeease post something if you come up with a solution, I love the van if I could only sit in it for more than 30 minutes and I really can't afford to sell it right now based on what I think I would lose.

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me, is the navigation system worth the money?
Anyone have any particular likes or dislikes?
I would love to know.
    Thanks,
    Michelle

No answers for you but a question.

Is it noticeably quieter? We're considering going from a 2000 to a 2005, but road noise is really the only reason. If it's not a big difference we'll probably wait. Thanks for any info.

I really like nav units. Before we bought our '05 Touring, we had owned Garmin gps units, the last one being the 2610.
They are really great for out of state driving. It's nice to know how far you are from your destination, it seems to make the trip seem shorter.
When in another city or state, you don't have to worry about getting lost or missing a freeway exit and driving another 15 miles to the next one. The nav units give you plenty of time to get into the correct lane for an exit or interchange (especially when a freeway exit is on the left). I think it improves safety since you can keep your eyes on the road and not constantly look for street signs or highway overheads.
These nav units have probably saved me and the wife dozens of arguments since no one can be blamed for getting lost. The Honda (made by Alpine) has a nice big screen which is easy to see both day and night.
The voice prompts are good when travelling long distances since it will remind you of an upcoming change in direction.
I usually use the touchscreen data entry since the voice recognition is spotty on accuracy and is more of a gimmick.
One thing my Garmin has (I still use it when we rent cars when we fly out of state) is a display of the next cross-street. This is handy if you haven't programmed a destination but are looking to turn on a particular street.
The Garmin also has a satellite info screen which, among other things, constantly displays elevation. It is interesting to use when travelling through mountains.
There are times when the unit does not plan the most efficient or direct route, but you WILL get to your destination. This can be forgiven considering the huge data base it contains.
All in all, I literally feel "lost" when driving without a nav unit.
Considering the nav unit is included with the dvd system in the Touring model, I am very happy with it. :D

    Good luck,
    Rick

guess some of the link got cut off when I copied it.

If you read that, doesn't look like Honda is about to go out of business, not having record months.

Accord sales down slightly YTD, but up a bit in March. Hard to tell what that means, but still on pace for 280K plus sales for the year (if I got the numbers right).

Michelle, there are four principal features in any Odyssey R&N model:

    1) Navigation system
    2) Back-up camera
    3) Rear entertainment system
    4) XM radio

If your additional cost for the package is less than $4000 (compared to a non-R&N), and you want/need at least 2 or 3 of the features, yes, it's worth the money.

If you want/need all four, it is well worth the money. My cost was an extra $3415 on my Touring (purchased at invoice) and I consider it just about the best money I've ever spent.

However, if you only want/need the navigation system then, no, you most likely will be much better off with an aftermarket unit.

The thing I like best about the nav system is the large screen size - it's perfect for my aging eyes! It is also nice that the default display is map mode. The system is vastly superior to that in my wife's '05 Pilot.

    I just brought the 05 EXL R&N
The Navigation System is worth every penny...
It has a back up camera - in reverse you can see behind the Van
It has voice command - you can tell it to raise the temp, play a cd, etc
    It has information - maps/resturants/banks/etc
XM radio was an added bonus
I have only had my Ody for 3 days - everyday I find something new the Navigation System will do on command...
Without the Navigation you have a Good Odyssey WITH THE NAVIGATION YOU HAVE THE LATEST/COOLEST/FUTURISTIC MODEL!

My kids call the Ody the "I Robot" Van - It is awesome!

In regards to aftermarket additions - They are never as good as the installed one!

I'm not sure anyone can really tell you whether the NAV system is "worth the money" without knowing more about your personal situation. If you have the disposable income, travel enough in unfamiliar areas so that electronic directions (as opposed to a map or Mapquest) are important, and enjoy high tech gadgets for their own sake, it may well be worth it--the ones I've used were fun and generally useful (without regard to cost). Furthermore, I don't think there's much question that the system in the Ody is one of the best, if not the best, available. However, if you're a somewhat frugal sort that measures cost-benefits in purchases, thinks that people survived just fine without these for decades, and isn't overly committed to being on the cutting edge of technology, I think the high cost of the installed units might give you pause. In addition, while there is a strong convenience factor to having a factory installed unit, serious $$$ can be saved by investigating after market systems, a couple of which really are quite good (e.g., the Tom Tom)--if you don't mind having to secure them on your dash. My .02.

Thanks dilbertzzz. The new 2005 Odyssey is a most desireable minivan and it is not hard to see why they are selling so well. :)
I am also not too surprised to see the Accord sales drop so much this year or the Insight sales to plummet.
Good that Honda has the Odyssey, Pilot, and CRV to offset the drop in cars. It appears that the Pilot has stolen sales from the Acura MDX.

In looking at the odyssey (i've yet to catch a dealer during business hours) and noticed "auto headlights" are an upgrade that comes with the Touring. Does this mean the EX does not have any sort of automatic headlights? It says the EX has "delay headlamps" but do you have to manually turn them on/off?

Also, in another forum someone mentioned their battery going dead because they left the interior lights on. Is there no setting to have the lights turn off after so long to avoid running the battery dead? My wife is notorious at leaving the interior lights on, however I haven't owned a vehicle in many years that didn't turn them off automatically if you forget.

Are you happy with the Michelin tires that come on the EX? I was looking at tire options in that size and there isn't much to pick from. The Michelins had some complaints at tirerack.com but none were for the Odyssey. Claimed they wore bad, hydroplaned after they had some miles on them, and were terrible in the snow. Not cheap tires to replace either.

I've never owned a vehicle that DID! But then again I've only owned Japaneese vehicles. No, Honda Ody does NOT turn off interior lights automatically. But they do have one switch that allows you to turn off EVERY single interior light at the same time (as opposed to clicking each one). So maybe you can train your wife to hit that switch every time she turns off ignition?

Ha! Not going to train us much of anything at this age. My last couple of higher-end japanese vehicles would turn the lights out. Surprised it hasn't trickled down yet. Surprised they don't offer rain-sensing wipers as well.

I've bought maybe a dozen Toyota/Lexus products in the last 15 years and it always amazes me how they can put together a nice package, but leave out something I want. The domestics usually offer everything I want, but a lower quality package. I do like Honda's packaging better than Toyota. At least it's basically "take it or leave it". Toyota likes to pretend to offer certain options but then you can never get them. We waited 8 months on our GX470 when the dealer finally called and said they just aren't going to build one with the options you want. So we got stuck with a silly looking spoiler and a set of 3rd row seats that live in the garage. But I walked onto the lot and bought my Tahoe exactly how I wanted it. As much as I hate buying cars, you'd think I'd quit one of these days... I doubt the wife will drive the odyssey much anyway, she's not a minivan person.

Our 1996 Dodge Caravan has the feature of automatically switching off the interior lights after a fairly long delay, as does my 2000 Taurus. It has probably saved five or 6 dead batteries by now.

Hard to believe Honda didn't think to include this feature.
  • skysaabskysaab Member Posts: 32
yes, Ex has the feature as "delay headlamps". I tried it after read the manual. It turns off after couples seconds when you lock your van. Great feature and now I never have to worry about that forgot the headlight and run out the battery. But it's not recommend to use it often if you dont drive it for a long time which written in the manual.

Not a big difference for me. Maybe a little quieter but I hear one additional internal noise.
  • ace1000ace1000 Member Posts: 151
The original question was about the interior, not the headlights, turning off automatically, and yes, Honda does include this feature. The owners manual says the lights in the EX and Touring will turn off after about 3 minutes. When the switch is in the "door on" position, the lights turn off automatically even if one of the front doors is still open. This has happened to me many times. The way the manual is written, it seems that the interior lights will also turn off automatically if the switch is in the "on" position.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
EX-L with RES. None with Navigation on the lot. Window price $1,000 over invoice, I didn't talk money.

Drove pretty good. Interior materials are good quality, fit/finish was not as great as I expected. I checked a couple others on the lot and they had some similar sloppy looking interior pieces as well. When sitting in the passenger seat I could see down inside the upper glove-box. As someone mentioned earlier, it seems to have quite a bit of road noise. Similar to my Tahoe which isn't bad, but I really expected something more quiet with all-season tires and lots of media hoopla.

It looks like I'm going to have to go with a Touring just to get a couple simple features that I've grown accustomed to.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Actually, the original question was about both. I forgot to ask the salesman about the headlamps. Can you just leave the headlights in the ON position all the time and they'll turn off by themselves after a period of time?

So you're saying if you have manuall turned on an interior light, get out and shut the door, after 3 minutes they'll turn off regardless of the position of the switch? That's what I would expect from most any vehicle these days, but someone said that wasn't the case.
  • ace1000ace1000 Member Posts: 151
The EX has a weird arrangement for the headlights. The lights will turn off after a few seconds if you leave them on after turning off the ignition. However, the headlights will come back on when you open the door, not when you start the car.

Volvo figured out the best system many years ago where the headlights and tailights turn off when you turn off the ignition and turn on when you start the car. All the light switch does is turn on either the parking lights instead of the headlights or the instrument panel lights. I don't have to remember to turn on my lights when I turn on the windshield wipers, which is the law now in California, because the exterior lights are always on, and the headlights don't turn off when you engage the parking brake as they do with the DRL on many other cars.

  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
when you use the remote to unlock the doors, the headlight turns on automatically. I found this very useful at night in big parking lots.

    Hi,
Thanks to all who had input on whether the navigation system is worth it. Very much appreciated. We decided to go for it. Got a great deal from a dealer in CT, we pick it up at the end of the month.

Question about the towing hitch: I know that honda doesn't recommend installing just the hitch, without all the other important stuff. But what if we only want it to haul bikes? and can we just order it and install ourselves? Does anyone know? :confuse:

    Thanks, Michelle
  • emaneman Member Posts: 85
I got burned on the issue of towing with the 05 Ody EX.

I negotiated the trailer package n the purchase price but it would have cost about $1400 otherwise. Crazy. Honda gives you a 4 prong plug. They would not do a 7 wire harness that would provide for trailer power, brake controler & solid ground. That cost another $265 from an outside shop.

Honda claims a max of 350# tongue weight and 3500# trailer. (ie tongue weight should alwys be about 10% of trailer).

BUT only after you buy the thing does the manual fine print note that anything more than 1850#'s requires a weight distributing hitch. That's about anothe $350-400 plus more junk to store and springs to attach etc etc.

I have a 2000# camping trailer that should not be a big deal. but HOnda sure made it complicated. the sienna seems to offer a better factory package!

Well, it was bound to happen when warm weather comes!

I had complained previously that without the tilt-out rear quarter vents to relieve air pressure the side windows when open would create ear splitting buffeting noise.

The other day, nice 73 degrees, I opened the sunroof, my son (who is perpetually hot)was in the second row with his window down half way.

All seemed well to me in the drivers seat until I looked in the mirror and was shocked to see the 5 year old neighbor kid in the third row in agony with both ears pressed shut with his hands. I immediately recognized the problem an closed the second row window!

What surprised me is that I did not hear the buffeting myself. My (always hot) son and I always have this batle when he tries to open the side windows without balancing of the buffetint with other open windows

Parents beware, the buffeting can be painful to the ear drums!!!!

Honda, you realy screwed up on this one.:cry:

I also have felt this after I purchased an 2005 EX a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure if it is normal or not. It is a little comforting that other people have also felt this, too. I'm hoping it will smooth out over time cause I've never really felt this type of behavior in my other cars.
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
I didn't know our Touring had auto-off interior lights. I'll test this feature. The reason I didn't think it was there because I've observer lights on inside our van in the morning on numerous occasions. Maybe you need to lock the doors for this feature to work; we never lock our cars in the garage...

Michelle, can you please tell mewhich dealer you got your deal from? I am in CT looking for a Touring with R/N.

    Bud
  • emaneman Member Posts: 85
I checked the manual today - on EX and Touring. The interior lights when on will shut off after 3 minutes when the doors or tailgate are open.

IE. the light won't shut off when my kids leave them on and the doors are closed.

thanks HOnda for the oversight, jeeez they got so close! . since the basics are there in the computer it wouldn't take much to also shut the lights off after 10 minutes if the doors are all closed! Duuuuuh!

So with 4 kids, I need to shut off all interior lights ALL the time because I can't check everytime if the kids left the lights on. they like to play with the switches. This solutio is a pain but beats a dead battery.

My 2005 EX does the same thing. If you even take your foot off the gas, you notice the downshifting. I have had my Odyssey about a month and have talked to the dealer about this. He suggested I come in and drive another Odyssey to compare. I may do that. After reading these posts, at least I know I'm not the only one who has felt this.
  • emaneman Member Posts: 85
    I have an EXL.

I tried an MP3 CD today after another poster said it did - but it didn't work. The manual states that the CD player can take CD-R but not CD-RW. There is no mention of MP3's in the manual that I could find even with the Toruing/Nav/RES since it is the same manual.

That is why HandA sell an MP3 seperately. If somebody however can confirm that I am wrong please let me know.
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
Well...the previous poster didn't state if they had the dealer MP3 player or not! Did you try yours with an RW or R?
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
no mp3 player, just your oem cd player. I used only cd-r disc, got a hundred of them for free after rebates. I am not too sure about this, but i read somewhere else that a lot of it depends on which software you use to burn your cds. I used roxio.
  • nwngnwng Member Posts: 663
by the way, don't blow your money on a honda mp3 player, you can hook up your mp3 player directly into the aux. I am trying to figure out how do a clean install (no wires dangling)
  • emaneman Member Posts: 85
Of interest would be the ability of the stock 6 disc CD player to play MP3 CDs. I have MP3 discs but no Ipod. My MP3 discs are CD-R. I don't know the software it was written. If somebody knows then please advise. I would be nice to get 100 or so songs onto a disc and let it play in the EXL
  • sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
That's what my plan was. Not crazy about hooking an MP3 player up, just something else laying around inside the car. If the changer would play the MP3's that would be great. Throw in a couple CD's loaded up with MP3's and you'd have a nice music collection. Something worth investigating, not a deal breaker though.

I traded a gas guzzeling, hard riding, head banging, lifter rattling, engine vibrating 05 Chrysler 300C ( yup it had a hemi) with only 900 miles on it for my Touring. It's black on black leather, has great accelleration, runs perfect on 87 octane, has a fabulous sound system, extremely comfortable to drive, I don't hear any road noise, and love to open the moonroof !!! The owners manual is 3" thick and I'm still learning about all the wonderfull features of this superb machine.......complaints ??? NONE..........For my dollars ( and I perform physical labor daily to get it) this is one bodacious machine and they'll take it away when they pry the keys from my cold lifeless fingers........... :):)
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Your dollars must not be very important to you if you traded in a vehicle with only 900 miles on it or your post is just a cheap attempt to trash another brand. Where did you find an owner's manual that is so much thicker than the one my nephew got with his new 2005 Odyssey?

When I turn the wheel, I occassionally hear clunking or popping noise. It seems more frequent when the car is in reverse gear. I don't think it's the transmissin but rather the steering system or front suspension. Anyone with similar experience?

I also notice a downshift which acts as engine braking when I slow the van down. It's take some getting used to.

I got 21.5 miles hwy driving and 17.4 miles mostly city driving.

The Touring model I got has PAX tires. There seems to be no balancing weight on the exterior of the wheels. Anyone cares to explain how wheels with PAX tires ?are balanced?

I only have had my 2005 EX for less than 4 months and already forgot how many times I went back to dealer. The dealer finally fixed the chirping noise from front suspension after working on my car for almost two weeks. Today I just realized I too seemed to get the passenger sliding door rattle problem many people has complained about. Mine sounded something is shaking from between sliding door and third row and happend when driving over rough pavement. I already tightened all seatbelts. Does anyone have the same problem from the same area? If so, can it be fixed? I am really tired of dealing with Honda now and would like to know some possible fixes before wasting more time. Again, this would be my first and last Honda purchase.
