I think the 2005 Odyssey or 2005 Grand Caravan would be a good reliable van.

We have a 2001 DGC EX with 59K that we bought used in Sep. 2003 with 37K. Our van has been very reliable. No power door problems, no rattles, original trans., all features still work, city mileage is 17 and highway is 24 MPG, brake pads still haven't been changed since we've owned it, heat/air conditioning works great with the triple zone selection for driver/front passenger/rear passengers, comfortable, stable and sporty stiff ride with no wind noise. :shades:

Thanks for the info MWG100. I did not notice the vibration at aprx 45 to 54 miles, but will start paying more attention. However have you notice a "Switshing" or "Clicking" sound at the begining of each drive? The sound only happens the engin is turn on and put into drive for the first time. The sound will not happen, for example, return to drive at a stop sign or return to drive from park position after the 1st drive. I've also consulted Honda service and they say it's normal and is on all 05 Odessy.

Your initial post was very informative and helpful. Thanks for that. I pull a 4x8 untility trailer mostly on short trips when getting mulch or topsoil. I plan on installing the cooler systems when/ if I take this thing on a longer haul. The Honda factory hitch is overpriced in my opinion and looks somewhat complicated to install compared to the Hidden Hitch. My plan is to try to install the Hidden Hitch on my own. I am a bit concerned about the wiring harness installation. I'd love to see the pictures of the installed hitch you mentioned. Do you know if the wiring harness can be installed without removing the bumper? I'll do the bumper removal if I have to, but I prefer not if I don't. (Note: I owned a Previa before purchasing this Odyssey and I simply stashed the wiring harness inside the vehicle and ran it through the door joint by clamping it between the door gaskets when closing the rear tailgate. It was a simple /stupid solution but it worked. I'm considering doing the same with my Odyssey as another option.)
Thanks for any and all information/ suggestions you can provide.

I also get the same boink sound every time I start the odyssey and start rolling out. I took it to the dealer and he indicated that it was normal. It's the VSA self-checking after every ignition cycle. At about 12 mph, the VSA pump moter comes on for 28 milliseconds. You hear a low groan or boink or twang.

I hop other post this problem and complain to Honda. I can't belive it's normal, it should not be that loud. Honda should look for a fix and recall for this problem.

Others.. please post if you've encounted this problem with the '05 Odyssey.

Should have explained this to you.

I don't understand why this would be a "problem"?

It's a 20 millisecond sound, not a big deal, is it?

I don't know. I've had two Chrysler minivans, a '95 GC LXI and a '01 T&C Limited. Both were purchased new and both have had a history of similar problems. All related to AC, Transmission, and front brakes. The '01 has needed two torque converters, a AC compressor, clutch, and condenser (separate incidences), and front rotors replaced due to galling, all in 57,000 mi. The vans were primarily driven by my wife, who is actually quite a good driver, on rural or small city roads. Virtualy no meto driving and no trailers. They were well maintained. Oil changes were at <5,000 mi with synthetic oil.

Personally I think Chrysler purposely builds "questionable" vehciles to subsdise their service depts. Why else would they offer a 7/70,000 warranty. Maybe I'm wrong. We'll find out. We pick up a new EX-L next week.

Just My Opinion

With the EX-L, you should experience a greater level of driving satisfaction like many of us who have switched.

Enjoy!!

dear friends...
I know this has been asked before, but I was wondering if anyone has new info on when the '06 Odyssey is coming out. Trying to decide between the Odyssey and the Sienna, and the info on when the '06 is coming out will help me decide.
thank you.

Well, after the vehcile being at the dealership for more than a week. The dealership stated that it could not fix my transmission problem and stated that it is inherent in the vehicle. The service manager, technician, and Honda Area Representative all agreed that there is a problem, especially when we went on a test drive. Next step is Honda Corporate. Asking for full refund and will wait to buy a 2006. For those thinking about buying a 2005 Odyssey, I stronlgy stress that one should take it for a test drive above 45 MPH!
• isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Probably won't see any 2006 Odysseys until September and I doubt there will be any changes to speak of.
• thumperthumper Member Posts: 75
It's not that unusual a sound. There is a similar sound on many ABS-equipped cars performing the same pressure check. Some are even louder.
• dansgirldansgirl Member Posts: 14
I don't have an audible noise (at least I don't think so - usually have the radio/DVD and two kids going), but I do have something I feel in the gas pedal about 4-5 seconds in to the initial drive. This does not recur during the entire trip, even if stopped or put in park, it only happens again after the van has been completely turned off.

I will see if I can hear anything when I drive it this afternoon.

I would say no - you can't fit 3 carseats on the second row of the 05 Odyssey. We just took a road trip with family. I tried to install my nephew's infant seat (with and without base unit) and could not get it tight to my satisfaction in the center position. I also tried my son's graco turbo booster in the center position and it is too wide - wider than the seat belt separation, so the seat sat on top of the belt buckle. Also any seat in the middle would interfere with the access to the third row. However, once we worked it out - we fit 5 adults, one infant seat, one toddler seat, and one booster for a 6 hour trip and everyone was relatively comfortable.

I had a flat on my Touring and getting it fixed was a real pain. Of course, currently they are unable to replace only the tire and must replace the entire wheel & tire assembly. My dealer tried to charge me $700, even though the tire is under warrantly, because there was a cosmetic scratch on the wheel and their dealer won't take it back. I finally got it changed for free, but only after 2 separate calls to Michelin. See the Run-Flat/ PAX forum on this site for the entire story.
• stevecnsstevecns Member Posts: 2
I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing this strange noice. If sales person says it's VSA checking, I wonder if sound would still be on if we turn off the VSA? Will check tomorrow.

As for the Vibration at aprx 45MH, I did not notice this vibration on several drives, but will continues pay attention.

Hi Michael,

I have a similar problem with my EX, my vehicle makes a "louder than normal" sound when trying to maintain a constant speed or on slight acceleration. And it doesn't seem to be MPH range specific. This sound is very annoying, sounds like the trans is lugging or a leak in the air intake, or both. This sound is very difficult to describe here and is best understood on a test drive.

Thank you, and please keep us informed....

when in doubt about any accessories try going to H and A, they show installation instructions.

for your need they show the wiring harness installation.

I've norrowed my choice down to the T&C Limited or the Ody EX with DVD/Leather/Nav.

I like the Ody engine & trans, very smooth and quick accel. Also like the conversation mirror, Driver/Passenger center console that flips down, the 8th seat, passenger shades and windows that go down, rear view camera, 9" DVD screen. I don't like the lack of a power lift gate unless you get the top line model, then you loose the 8th seat and have to pay a lot more, bad move if you ask me. I also don't like the lack of rear vents, and the location of the DVD player is dumb.

I like the T&C limited because I get a lot more car for the money. The only complaints are; the emergency brake release location, doesn't have the ody engine & trans and other things mentioned above. It does have a trip computer, compass, seat/mirror/pedal/radio memory.

I had planned on waiting until next year but both dealers have called me back; The Honda dealer finally has one in with the DVD/NAV, and the Chrysler dealer has lowered the price further. I can see that it really pays take time and not get rushed into either purchase.

One question I have is, is anyone getting 28 MPG on the highway in the Ody, I have yet to hear of anyone getting 28 MPG. I test drove a Dodge Grand for 3 days and for the most part I was able to get the stated MPG according to the trip computer. I have a PT cruiser that gets the stated MPG so I would guess the T&C is close to the stated MPG.

I'm a little worried about getting the Honda, I like it for all it's gadgets, but I don't like what I'm reading about it on not only this forum but others. It could be that people just expect more from the Honda, but I don't think so. I only read a few minor complaints about the T&C and DGC.
• cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
The Odyssey will get its claimed 28 mpg on the highway when driven at legal speeds (my Touring R&N hit 27 with the vehicle fully loaded and having less than 2000 miles on it). Driving faster quickly cuts its mileage. However, I have yet to see anyone claim they have achieved its 20 mpg city figure.

My view is that Honda (and some others) are now somewhat victims of their own success. Having created superior products, folks expect perfection. Rather than rely on recent anecdotes, take a look at the long term reliability and cost of both makes.

It is true the '05 Odyssey has experienced some teething problems. However, most of the issues have been minor and quickly resolved. Mine, built in 2/05, has none of those problems.

Thanks for that, eman. I'd been to that site previously and down loaded the pdf's for the hitch/ harness installation. What I seek is someone with first hand experience who has installed ( or had it installed ) a Hidden Hitch, Honda Hitch, or harness.
The Hidden Hitch looks so much easier to install and I am wondering if it is.

i got my new odyssey 3 weeks ago. the mileage seems to be abysmal. even the hwy mileage is around 18mpg. when i called honda, i was told that the vehicle would reached the claimed mpg after it has been driven 10,000 miles, which i find it very hard to believe.

in the last couple of days, i have noticed that the vehicle position is at times off on the actual street map. it is as though the displayed position is lagging behind the actual position. but again, while lagging, if i make a turn, the display is immediately updated with the turn and as a result, i see the vehicle going not on any road. at this point, the display is updated - the vehicle position jumps to a point on the street. btw, honda even refused to tell me the alpine systems model number that they use. do any of you know that information ??

my advice to buyers: dont get the nav. you can get the new alpine version with a remote control and a much better display for almost the same price if not cheaper.

the screen in the RES also seems to be of a very poor quality. we can get a better one for around 1000 usd (installed) which plays cd-rw, mp3 etc.

It is my understanding that you would get EPA hwy mpg if you:drive at a steady 45mph on a road that is perfectly flat and smooth, with the windows up, the air conditioning off, all accessories off, no headwind, with no extra weight or cargo in vehicle...including the driver.

Well, that sort-of describes how the EPA performs their test, however they add about 20% as a "real-world" adjustment.

I've beat the EPA on many of my vehicles, and I don't drive conservatively by any stretch. My Tahoe really never averaged less than 15mpg (except when towing or lots of idling) and would get 20mpg on all highway stretches running at least 70mph. It was rated 14city/17hwy. My diesel Jetta will turn 50mpg at 70mph (rated for 48mpg) but I usually run 80+ and average 47mpg. Bummer.

My first fill on the Ody returned 19mpg in a 70/30 split. So I'm getting about 4mpg better than a 290hp V8 4x4 Tahoe. Hopefully this motor loosens up. I didn't buy it for the fuel mileage, but I'd be satisfied if it'll at least average 22mpg.

Actually the number on the sticker on the car is 22% less than what the EPA test resulted in.

The navigation system in my Touring does not function like you are describing yours. The displayed vehicle position should not ever "jump," at least mine never has. Sounds like a warranty issue.

I had the complete Honda hitch job done including all the coolers and I am sure there was one for the window washer fluid as well.

The hitch seems to bolt right into the frame with ready made threaded holes (from what I could tell). The bumber however needs to be cut, The instarutions provide a cutting template. The bumper needs to be removed for this but it only seems to hang on a few bolts. The 4 prong wiring harness gets installed by basically plugging in the wiring module ( I think there is a wire going over to the right tail lamp). Allthe trunk trim needs to be rmoved.

Hello!

About to take the plunge. Have a 2004 EX (cloth and DVD) and am working on getting the EXL (with DVD and Navi). What are the differences in comfort, ride, handling, etc. Let me know what you think of the different model years. I know that I will take a hit on the trade-in. I have already done a search for my question in the forum.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Have driven a 2001 Ody EX many times, test drove a 2002 EX-Lthr-NAV-RES, and more recently a loaded 2005 EX-L-Nav-RES and frankly, I could not tell much difference in the comfort, ride, handling, etc. However, the acceleration is better at any speed with the 5 speed AT compared to the 4 speed AT of the 2001.
I actually prefer the seats of the 2001 EX over the 2002 and 2005. The 60/40 Split Magic seat and Plus one middle seat 2nd row are nice features but would not be worth taking the big loss you will take trading in an almost new 2004. I have also read here in the Town Hall that the radio reception is not as good in the 2005 as in the earlier models.
• isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Between the seats in a 2001 and a 2002. Nothing was changed.

I've never detected a probelm with radio reception on the 2005's. Maybe more in fringe areas? Certainly nothing to  over I wouldn't think.

Have you checked out the latest crash test results done by the government(www.safercar.gov) on the 2005 Odyssey? The Odyssey gained almost 5-star ratings on all the crash tests, and there is a safety concrern; during the side impact test(driver's side), the driver door became unlatched and opened which would increase the likelihood of occupant ejection. I wonder if, what Honda is doing this safety concern? I even e-mailed the dealer about this, but am still waiting for a reply. What do you guys think about this? :confuse:
• hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
I should have clarified that the cloth seats of the 2001 Odyssey EX were more comfortable than the leather seats of the 2002 Odyssey EX-Lthr-NAV-RES.
It seems to me that the 2002 Odyssey cloth seats had more curvature in both the back and the bottom of the seats and the fabric material had been changed from the 1999-2001 models. With leather, the seats were more similar between 2001 and 2002 than with cloth.
• cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
I guess I don't see why the door coming open would be a serious safety concern. Then again, I always wear a seat belt so I'm not going to be ejected in any event.

In 1971, having my license exactly one week, I rolled a '65 Buick doing about 60. The driver's door came open. Secured by a lapbelt only, I went nowhere and sustained only some cuts from flying glass as the windows blew out.

Would it be better if the door stayed closed? Sure, but better yet would be a vehicle (any vehicle) that could maintain full passenger compartment integrity in a 60-70 mph head-on crash.

Have been driving Silver Pearl RES for six months and so far so good.

Pros:
Dashboard design is very attractive. Significantly better than Sienna's plastic-feel.
Transmission is smooth.
DVD has kept the peace with 3 kids. Movies are clear. Also, found auxiliary input ports for LCD and played PS2 game on long trip - need to buy lighter/AC converter to power PS2 console..
Sunken trunk actually holds more than Caravan.

Cons:
Have had two fender benders - probably bad driving - but had no similar incidents with caravan in 8 years of driving. I think that the rear end of the Odyssey is a bit wider than Caravan's. (One good note is that the shallow dents popped out on its own so we just had to paint it.)
Rear hatch was hard to close. Fixed with Warranty visit.
Wind noise from front windshield. They're ordering parts recommended by a service bulletin.
Slight wind noise from passenger window. Fixed with warranty visit.

The customer service at the Bellevue service department is very good - I wished I could say the same for their sales department.

Happy driving.
• jipsterjipster Member Posts: 6,299
While wearing a seat belt would prevent occupant ejection if door came open during a crash. An open door during a crash could also allow high flying road debris or metal objects, fence posts, other cars...whatever...to enter the cabin and injure the driver.Hopefully this isn't something that would happen every time in a side impact collision(door opening)

in 2005 EXL radio reception stinks due to anntena in right rear window which makes it annoyingly diretional. signal strenght comes and goes making FM very annoying. Toruing has the same radio and antenna but they add an extra amplifier. I have a 2003 EXL and the reception is 100 times better. But you cannot add a stalk antenna to the fender because there is no conventional antenna  plug in the darn radio

One more suggestion, the Honda hitch is a class II type with a receiver, that is why the bumber needs to be cut. Otherwise the receiver would be very low.

See if somebody makes a class I hitch for light towing. Class I hitches usually have a simple bar that can wrap up and around the bumber so maybe you can avoid cutting the bumber.

My 05 Odyssey gas mileage is poor compared to what I expected. On the last 2 tanks, I got 18.9 and 18.4 MPG with 60-70% on the highway at 65 MPH. The van only has 1200 miles, but I have a 01 Windstar that out performs this vehicle. I had a 99 Olds Silhouette that would get about 22 in the same type driving. I do notice that when the economy mode comes on that the engine RPM stays the same even if I let off the gas. When I do let off the gas, the van starts to slow immediately like I am braking lightly instead of coasting like you would expect. I also recent drove down a steep hill that I would normally ride the brakes in my other vehicle. In the Odyssey the van had an RPM of over 2000 and I never had the hit the brakes until the bottom of the hill. This high RPM while coasting down a hill may be the cause of the poor fuel economy.
• sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
I believe you burn less fuel when coasting in gear (i.e. some rpms) as opposed to coasting. I have measured fuel injected on my VW while driving and if I'm coasting in gear, it injects zero fuel. If I push the clutch in and idle while coasting, it injects fuel the same as if it's idling at a stop.

I'm only getting about 19-20mpg on the first few tanks, but this motor feels a little tight. Performance is a little less than I expected as well, so it may just take some miles to come around a bit. I replaced a 4x4 V8 Chevy Tahoe with the Odyssey and if you look at the specs they aren't all that far apart. The Ody has 20 less hp, is 500# lighter, and dimensionaly almost identical. I usually averaged 16mpg with the Tahoe in the same driving (and 20mpg on the highway). IMHO, the EPA numbers are a bit inflated on the EX-L models because of the cylinder deactivation. I think it gives a bigger boost on the EPA sticker simply because of how the test is performed. I doubt there's more than 1-2mpg difference between the two engines in real-world. I'd be happy with a 22mpg average when it's all said and done although mpg isn't really why I bought another big heavy vehicle!

With only 1200 miles on your car, you can expect that your mileage will improve.
Until I had about 3,000 miles on my 05 Touring, I was getting worse mileage than you.
I now get around 18 mpg in the city with lots of loooong stoplights.
When I get on the highway, mpg goes up to around 24mpg, with some stretches where I am getting over 26 mpg.
Wait a while, your mileage should improve.
Good luck,
Rick
• dansgirldansgirl Member Posts: 14
I have about 1,200 miles so far, and have filled up 4 times now. The first 3 tanks yielded 20 mpg, 21.7 mpg, and 21.0 mpg, and that is almost all city driving, and I do not watch my speed. Even if this does not improve, which I believe it will, it is good gas mileage for such a performance vehicle...don't let the mini-van fool you, this baby has power!

Is that city driving downtown city traffic driving…or city driving meaning suburb driving?

I usually classify non-highway driving as city, but there could be a wide variation in city driving that may result in the differences in mpg…plus all the others things such as tire pressure, altitude, climate, driving style etc.

18-19 does seem a “little” low for almost all highway driving @ 65mph, but excluding anything wrong mechanically, when all is said and done…it gets what it gets. I’d be a little upset thinking I’ve been “taken” by false advertising; but the sticker is an EPA sticker...

I just had 17.4 on my first tank of gas with 50/50 driving (non Odyssey) and I’m “ok” with that.

Thanks for your input eman. I took your advice and decided to try my luck with a Hidden Hitch.
Was I glad I did. I had to drive a ways to pick it up , about an hour, but that was 50 minutes longer than it took to install it. If I had been hustling, didn't rust proof the bolts and had an air- wrench, I think I could have had this on in three minutes- literally. Hidden Hitch is a well-designed, sturdy and unobtrusive hitch.
( hidden means nicely tucked in under the bumper which makes it look as if someone thought about how it would look as well as perform.)
You are correct, its receiver is a bit low but I inverted the drop bar and voila, the perfect height for a trailer that requires a ball.
Now I am hoping the wiring solution will be equally easy to solve. I think I am going to do what I did with my old Previa. I simply connected the harness to the van let it dangle over the back and closed the door on it. The door gasket sealed fine with seemingly no damage over 7 years to the wire or the door gasket. I DID eventually develop some latch issues but I doubt they were related to the wire- the van had 213 k on it so some hardware failure was expected.
I don't use this trailer often enough to warrant removing the bumper just to thread a wire. But I do use it for an occasional three hour hall so now I have to start saving for the coolers. I'm going to do without them until my trailer runs are longer than two or three miles to pick up mulch, etc , etc. If you discover a place that sells the coolers for less than the fortune the dealer is asking, please FILL ME IN.
Oh, yes,.. The dealer spec'd harness looks to cost about $150.00. The Odyssey's owners manual states that if another harness is used, the pins and plug are available at the dealer. I wonder if this could be a viable and LESS EXPENSIVE alternative for someone who appreciates a kiss- (keep it simple stupid) wiring design. Does anyone know anything about the wiring? The guy who sold me the hitch offered me a wiring harness for about $35.00 but he said it needed to be hard wired in. Do you have any experience with alternatives to the "solid gold, diamond studded" harness Honda provides? Thanks again for all your help. It was a money saver so far.
PAchiefman

P.S. I am looking for 6 stainless steel bolts to swap out for the factory galvanized ones Hidden Hitch provided. If anyone knows a source for metric stainless steel hex cap bolts in the seemingly rare size and thread of 12mm x 35mm x 1.25 thread, please sing out. I've been searching online but standard is way more common than metric, and the fine thread at 12 x 35 mm seems even more rare. A "nutty" request I know. ---ok, that was bad. :P

I've been unable to determine from the owner's manual how to program our new '05 EX-L to automatically lock the vehicle's doors when it's either put into gear or when it's started (the manual shows how to do this for Touring models w/the Nav system, but not for models w/out that feature, as far as I can tell). Has anyone been able to program their '05 Ody to do this simple feature ? Thx
• sebring95sebring95 Member Posts: 3,241
From what I've gathered so far....it's only available on the Touring. Quite disappointed that what's standard on cheapo economy cars is somehow a luxury feature. I still think a dealer should be able to program this with their computer, but mine hasn't figured out how to do it yet. I know on my VW I can hook my laptop and program the doors to lock/unlock a dozen different ways. It's a safety feature, the Honda owners manual even recommends always locking the doors to reduce the likelihood of a door opening during a collision. Too bad the darn thing doesn't lock the doors for you like every other vehicle on the planet.

Hi all,

I'm looking to replace my beloved Audi A4 wagon with something with more room when my lease runs out in a couple of months. I think I am down to an Ody Touring or a Ford Freestyle Ltd. Unfortunately, neither has exactly all the features that I want. Specifically, the Honda lacks AWD. I live in Ohio and have to contend with nasty weather at least occasionally, and I don't have the option of not driving if it is bad out. Is there anyone here who has had AWD on a previous vehicle that misses it's lack on the Ody?

Thanks!
