Actually, if you're doing a play on the word "Picasso," it "Cubist, not "Impresionist." :)

Yes I was but since I don't really know art, I was going for the quick witty retort at someone who probably doesn't know either. And I type too fast!!

    <<And I type too fast!!>> ... ooh ... competition?
  • rob_mrob_m Member Posts: 820
Be careful, Robr2. Brenda taught Mavis Beacon how to type.

Oh, yeah to keep this on track, I still think the Tribeca is ugly. Rob M.

No no no - all I meant is that I type too fast to bother with spelling, that's all.

Different body colours, C&D pic...that's still one ugly schnozz. The photochop you linked to in post 405, Bob, does show the potential for improvement. I wonder if the b9 will go the route of the bug-eyed Impreza....a quick reworking after a year or so of criticism. Still not digging the name either, though...Tribeca of Uglybrook Farm keeps running through my head.

If Craig did not alter anything else but the grille

    image

then this picture might have been altered or altered by resize.

    image

The hood is too short to have a boxer in there, and the grille is more upright.

I just did a quick check of the various dimensions, and they seem to be consistent from photo to photo. In the bottom shot, I think the perspective just makes the hood look squashed.

I ran the C&D photos by two of my co-workers... one a Subie newbie who bought her '05 Forester this summer, and one who's a newspaper auto reviewer and VW fan. Neither had heard or seen anything about the Tribeca, and both had positive responses. I even mentioned beforehand that the nose was "controversial", but they both said they actually liked it (the auto reviewer liked its "distinctness").

My wife didn't mind the nose, either.

I think this nose will end up being acceptable to most buyers. (Hey, Toyota sells a ton of Siennas, don't they?)

Hmm... GM had the Warner Bros. edition vans, maybe Subaru can work a deal with Disney & the Tribeca can have the Pinnochio edition. :)
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
maybe Subaru could offer a cold-weather edition with furry seats instead of leather, and call it the B9 Chewbacca?

:) OK. Maybe that was a stretch.

Hopefully Tribeca will not share the same fate - to be recognized as worthy of love only in its dying moments. (Sounds like the SVX story to me.)

It still blows my mind that they can nail the new Legacy design and miss with this one so badly. I was expecting an X5 or XC90 type of success and got the Aztec and GMC XUV. My wife and I were the "target" mkt for this and it looks like we will be deciding between the FX and SRX.

I love my STi and really wanted to stick with Subaru but damn does that front end look horrible to me. I am sure the SAAB guys are reading this and making damn sure they don't screw up their version.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
how about waiting to see it in person, or at least until a few more pics come out? though it sounds like you already made up your mind...

You don't get a second chance at a first impression. No doubt it will be at the auto shows in Texas next month and will check it out first hand simply for the benefit of the doubt. I simply think Subaru tried to hard to make something unique. Only time will tell though. It will be interesting to see how they market this thing.
  • once_for_allonce_for_all Member Posts: 1,640
I frankly don't think Subaru has blown it. This is a very similar offering to what is already out there. But, I also liked the bug-eye WRXs and was sorry to see them go. And, if you want to know the truth, I own a 66 Ford Econoline Pickup (the one without the hood and the engine between the driver and passenger) and it is the most beautiful ugly design I have ever seen.

I did get to drive the Picasso after all, and boy is that one strange van! You can't control the rear power windows from the front seats, yet they have countless cup holders and 18 covered storage bins inside!

Subaru should copy the neat little trays but that's about it.

I'll take that silver one in Dave's post.

Can't wait, I'll see it in person in 7 days!

do u think they are going to know the prices this time around?
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
We'll ask swampy, but my guess is we won't know for sure until shortly before the car arrives at dealers.

And when is this new B9X vehicle going to arrive at the dealers?

Does this mean an Auto Show get together for the Crew to check out the B9X? When is the Philly show?

Wasn't there a live web cam last year showing the setup that happened upon Subaru's booth? Anyone recall the link to see what's happening this year?

Oh man, horrible timing. I will probably not be able to go. At work we are replacing 186 computers between February 7th and 11th, right when the Philly show happens!

Yikes, I'll have to miss it this year. Guess I won't meet PF_Flyer (moderator Bob).

    Unless we go on Saturday?

I do know there was a live web cam (well, really it was time delayed a bit) of the floor setup at the Chicago Auto Show the last couple of years. I seem to recall posts from last year about the Chicago show cams since the Outback was debuting there.

That must've been it. For some reason I thought the Legacy/Outback debuted in Detroit.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I doubt they'll have prices this month, even. They usually have a seperate press release a month or so later.

They might give us an official ball park figure, though.

I just got an invite to a B9 event at the Greater Richmond (VA) convention center on Jan 15 -- there will be "Owners Events" at 4:30 and 6:30 pm. Judging by the format of the e-mail, I bet these invitations are going out to anyone who signed up at mysubaru or perhaps the B9 website. I think this coincides with the Richmond Auto show, so they must be sending these invites out to local Subaru owners when there is a show in the area. Sounds cool -- I may stop by if I'm not skiing that weekend. I am glad to see that Subaru is getting out there with the B9 at auto shows so quickly after Detroit. It will be nice to see one in person.

    Craig

Edit: the invitation gives two free tickets to the auto show once you sign up on the Subaru website!!

It looks like you have to have "press credentials" to access the Detroit Show area, at least for now...

The folks we'll see are not likely the people that made that decision, but you can bet I'll mention it.

Changing the car's name from B9X to B9 Tribeca still sounds pretty benign. It still less bad than 9-6X, which sounds a lot like Nine sick sex to me.
  • ideatampa1ideatampa1 Member Posts: 1
As my lease is up in a few months, I was eager to see actual photos of the production version of the B9 today. Apparently, the vehicle was on a test run and it was caught by industry "spies" parked on the street in LA (sorry Subaru the hospital pictures are out).

In short, I am sorry to say that I wish I hadn't looked because its a design disaster on the order of the Pontiac Aztec (my eyes still hurt). It was also a huge disappointment because I am a designer and I was sucked in by the promise and sex of the renderings.

Folks think Toyota Precis on steriods and then add the styling cues of a 1970s Alfa Romero coupe at the front and the rear of a 1980s Pontiac Montana with the tail lights from the current Alfa Romero 147 (long narrow small lens on a flat end of a toaster; but on the Alfa they look appropriate). Side Elevations are somewhat better but remind me of an Lexus RX330 (SUV) stretched out to the proportions of a Toyota Sienna (Minivan). Forget the name, B9 Tribeca vs. B9X, the real problem here is outright horrible design.

I'm sorry to say that Subaru needs to keep the white sheet over this one in Detroit because they are going is going to lay an egg on design if they show it and an omelet when you throw in price in the upper 30K.

The one saving grace thought for Subaru is that it makes Forrester seem less homely. On the other hand, for the guys at Pontiac its just the edsel they need to divert attention off of the Aztec.

While this type of vehicle isn't my cup of tea I have to say....after the initial shock wore off it's growing on me. To my eyes it doesn't look any stranger than a LEXUS RX. Not a beauty, but not a pig either.

  • alpha01alpha01 Member Posts: 4,747
This is precisely what Bob had predicted- that the design would grow on people. I still prefer the RX's shape and execution, but the photo in Car and Driver shows a much better angle for the vehicle, and the interior is very attractively realized, in my opinion. For most, I think the price points for different trim/equipment will be the crucial factors.
Bob and Juice- Lately, I havent had a chance to keep up with as many threads as I would like to, but I just got around to reading the Test Drive forum- your commentary on the Lexus events was very thorough, interesting and well written, thanks!

Thanks Joe. The Lexus test drive event, as were the others, were a lot of fun, and very educational. These are great events to do a quick comparison of competing vehicles, as well as to study up close vehicles one doesn't normally shop.:)

in Motor Trend that the Subaru was going to go upmarket and compete with the RX330. Where would that leave the 9-6X?
  • njswamplandsnjswamplands Member Posts: 1,760
    9-6=x?

    9-6=3?

    9=x+6?
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
Where would that leave the 9-6X?

Since the 9-6X will be a Saab, that means it will be left on dealer and storage lots collecting waiting on $5K incentives!!

Actually it'll probably be competing against the RX330, MDX, XC90 and that ilk as well.

I'm taking a laptop. We got to the show on Wednesday the 12th, so hopefully that night.

What is the priority, pics or talk? In other words, should we share our impressions (text) or photos first?

I do want to go to Canada this time, so if we go out Tuesday night it might have to wait until Wed early morning.

Wednesday after the show at the earliest. Not sure what kind of hook up we'll have. We'll get them up as soon as we can, but it may not be until we get back. I'm sure there will tons of photos and info up, even before we leave. :)
