I'll drive a big range rover with brush bar and rock sliders if I come down to be safe.

Oh side note I got an insurance quote on one of the motorcycles I am looking at.

112 dollars a year... :surprise: I didn't think it would be that low.

Just give the kid an assault rifle and a case of cheap gin instead of a car like that. Same result, a lot cheaper.

tell them to price out a new 4.6 32v, just in case something happens to the one already in the car. it will probably cost a bit more than replacing the engine in the motorcycle.

Oh and another thing. If a previously salvaged car is totalled AGAIN, good luck getting back even pennies on the dollar from your insurance company.

I went to my first Monster Truck show this past winter with my 4 year old son. I have to admit it was alot of fun to watch for about an hour. After seeing a half dozen ways to crush cars the thrill is kinda of gone.

Monster trucks bring very little return for investment unless you have a famous truck.

Some people spend $100K building these things and are lucky to get back $35K

And what does "Car just got paid off in lieu of title in hand ." mean? I also love those "easy fixes" - then do them, already!

You don't like those generic wheels on a 12 year old Audi with at least one electrical issue? You can't tell me you aren't thinking about buying it.

Maybe the roof has something to do with flood damage.

3 BMWs -- lessee, asking $5,000, should take about $900 if they have decent interiors and are complete. If they are neither, perhaps running them through a wood chipper would be a better idea.

82 Benz Diesel -- running a bit sluggish? Nothing a $7,500 engine rebuild wouldn't cure.

I was thinking that these two 300ZXs were overpriced as a pair. Then I realized he wanted that for each one. Neither is a turbo or a manual. One is the awkward 2+2. I think he is a bit off.

I own a 1986 Lebaron convertible. I have owned it since 1999. Never had a problem getting parts for it. In fact, I moved from Toronto, Ontario down to Mississippi and brought the car with me. Since the car was originally sold in Canada, it did not conform to U.S. emission standards. I had to spend $550 on a new convertor and some rework of the emissions system. There was no problem finding the parts. The car has the Chrysler 2.2 non-turbo engine with a 3-speed automatic. On the way down south, I drove at a constant speed of 55 MPH and averaged 32 MPG. Down south I can drive the car all year round. Just love driving it on the Natchez Trace Parkway with the top down.

How do you turn or go over bumps in that?

How do you turn or go over bumps in that?

I dunno..VERY gently I guess. I had slightly oversized 235/70/R15's on my '89 Gran Fury, which is the same design as that Volare. I think the stock size for the copcars was 215/70/R15, with 225/70/R15 being the biggest you were supposed to go. If I hit a bump while going through a sharp enough turn, the front tires would scrape the silver trim around the wheel opening.

Those same wheels/tires are on my '79 5th Ave now, but I haven't had any clearance issues, thankfully.

That '70 Chevy C10 actually seems reasonably priced, and looks decent in the pictures. Makes me wonder what's wrong with it!

Something else I just noticed...when they called something a "long bed" back then, it was still just an 8 foot bed, right? Something about the bed of that truck looks longer to me. But that could just be that in those days the cabs and hoods were shorter and more upright, so the bed made up a larger percentage of overall length. Plus, the sides of the bed probably aren't as tall as on a modern truck, so that's going to make it look longer.
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Right. Short bed was 6 feet, long bed was 8, Longhorn beds were 8' 6", and there was a 9' fenderside bed still available then. The trend toward putting giant bedsides on trucks these days does make them look shorter, plus the increasing rarity of 8-foot beds these days.

I didn't want to look like some kind of bigoted jerk, but I was thinking by the location and verbiage of the ad, I can guess the background of the seller. There are some groups in the region that are known to sell iffy cars.

Those can be fun, in the "steer with the gas pedal" sense. The Crown kit flips the transaxle around and puts the engine where the back seats used to be. The perverse part of me wants to do a mid-engine Corvair with a Honda B18C.

79 Trans Am Convertible -- it IS rare, because Pontiac never made one--how much rarer can you get?

RE: Mid-Engine Corvair --- er, I sure hope someone welded some railroad track to that frame. Let me guess the car's name --- Death Wish II? I suspect this car would spin like a top if you hit a turn too fast.

I gotta admit, that's about the prettiest and cleanest '79 TransAm I've seen in ... oh ... about 27.5 years.

I actually drove an HMV Freeway. It's made out of 1/2 a motorcycle.

My overall impression was, after a short drive --"I am in a death trap. Somebody get me out of here". Other than that........

but what would be a reasonable price for a well-equipped 1992 Buick Roadhazzard? I saw one for sale up in Carisle yesterday. Originally $5800 but it was marked down to $4800. It was black with a red leather interior. It had a TBI 350, which puts out 180 hp. So it's not the more desireable LT-1, which was offered in 1994-96, and had 260 hp. Still, it's a pretty torquey car, and no slouch.

It only had about 50,000 miles on it, and was in really nice shape. It looked like a piece of the trim molding on the rear quarter panel had come loose and was glued back on, but that was the only flaw that jumped out at me. Oh, it also just had wire hubcaps instead of alloys, and no sunroof.

My 2000 Intrepid died on me on Friday nite, about two miles from home. It might just be something relatively minor like the fuel pump/filter, or some sensor. But if it's something more major, I'm actually considering this big Buick. Fuel economy won't be so hot. It was EPA-rated at 16/25, which is okay for something that size/power, and considering I don't drive that far these days, the fuel economy wouldn't break me. For comparison, my Intrepid was rated at 20/29. I wish I had thought to take a picture of it, but forgot. :confuse:
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,647
I dunno what that Roadmaster is worth...but I would think with those, the most loaded up ones would be the most desireable, same as with the 70s land yachts you mentioned. So, LT1, moonroof, etc would be sought after. But, I suppose if it was to become a daily driver and not really preserved, it wouldn't matter so much.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Sounds like $2,500 is all the money for that car. Maybe $2,750 if you just had to have it. What could you buy one for if you took your time? Probably as low as $2,000 for a nice one.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,109

Wow, that's really all they're worth?! And I thought the $4800 was actually fairly reasonable. I was thinking about trying to get him down to around $4K. I guess I must've gotten distorted by Carlisle-itis or something, so thanks for grounding me with a bit of reality.

At least it seemed like a better deal than the beat-up brown '78 Bonneville coupe with the 301 and power-nothing that the seller wanted $2500 for. :P

Considering how little I drive these days, it's really not imperative that I replace my Intrepid with anything. I just dropped off my "new" '79 New Yorker at the mechanic today, to have him check out its intermittent refusal-to-start problem. So once that thing gets more or less reliable again, I could just switch up my driving between that one and my '79 5th Ave, and maybe drive my '76 LeMans or '67 Catalina convertible on nice days when I don't have to go into a bad neighborhood or anything. :shades: But, I hate to say, I'm starting to get a new-car bug!
