You mean the Royal Family of Nigeria is not going to be sending me any money??? Fortunately for me, I am an executive at AIG, so my bonus money should cover the cost of that Alfa nicely.... :shades:
The W108 that popped up seems market correct...those cars just can't get any respect.
The 240D automatic is one of the slowest cars on the road. Way overpriced with a dead slushbox, even if he has a spare ready to go. I would insist on it installed and everything adjusted for that money.
When my parents' W123 300D motor seized up about 2 years ago, they were able to sell it as is/non running for about $2500. Apparently the guy who bought it resold it right away for $3000. :surprise:
I like the first white/burgundy example for $800. Cheap toy to play with and then throw away if it's starting to cost money.
I wonder if the guy who bought it had a spare engine laying around, or sold it to someone who did. Cars with really good cosmetics are getting harder to find, so it might have been worth the effort to a devotee.
The $800 car...drive it til it becomes a money pit or dies (and it might be awhile as it is a simple car) and you'll still get back for the parts.
I have a 1997 Honda Civic 165,000 miles. I will need to rebuild or replace engine, but it still runs. My mechanic said its not the lifters which I was hoping it was. He said I will need to replace engine or run it until it quits. I still owe money on it. Just looking for opinions on what to do or if you know of buyers or other places that would buy a car in this condition. Im thinking finding a used engine and replace it.
A quick glance at the net says roughly $1,000 - $1200 for a used engine for a 97 Civic.... most of those available that I saw were approaching 100K miles. Then there's the cost of putting it into the car. Figure $2K by the time everything is said and done.
Now, if you know where you can find an engine cheaper, or can do some of the work yourself, things get less expensive.
One question that I'd have is about the condition of the rest of the car. If it's a cream puff with zero rust and new CV joints, shocks, brakes etc, then the equation swings in more in favor of trying to keep it alive with a transplant.
I'd probably say that I'd just keep driving it while keeping an eye out for a good deal on an engine. If the right one comes along before it dies, then put it in. This approach also has the advantage of reducing the amount that you owe (and your potential losses) if you have to sell it with a dead engine.
If you sell it now, you're probably going to have to disclose the engine problems.Besides, there's nothing worse than NOT disclosing, and having the Q$#@%% thing die a week after you sell. Never fun.
You might find more help in one of the Honda Civic forums where people are going to have some direct experience with this situation.
If second opinion is the same, I'd drive it till it dies, then sell it to someone who wants to drop in a 2.2, or whatever the popular engine swap is these days.
Like lokki said, it depends on all the other components on the car.
How much do you owe on this gem?
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S
Well it's a lot more tasteful and sensible than putting a Chevy V-8 in one. And the price seems fair enough if it runs well and all the bugs have been worked out (yeah, right).
Slapping a badge on a car does not make it so...there was no such thing as an "AMG package" the year this car was made, although as a beater this might not be a bad one for the money.
Same thing here...and maybe even worse, as this car does not have the "sport package" the seller claims, and his "options" list is 100% standard features. Not who you want to buy one of the these cars from...
300E AMG. Click on the link below the pics and see the dent on the passenger side door. You should call the seller and ask whate exactly does this AMG package have? I'm sure they wouldn't be able to answer, other than the badge.
The S430. The cheapest one I've seen so far. Yeah, Sports pacakge I think came with bigger brakes, different suspension, different wheels, and maybe a body kit. His looks bone stock with a lowering job. Wouldn't be surprised if it's a rebuild. He thinks he can trade for a Cayenne among other things? I hope he's got $20k cash in the trunk of that Benz.
The badge makes it faster, it's like putting "Type R" on a Honda.
That W220 is miled up and its a base model, so I think the price is normal, I have seen them for that money. Heck, I can find 06 S500 for under 30K! You are right about the AMG package, it had a lot of trim and is easy to distinguish from a base model. Takes some balls to make such a claim. I too noticed it is sitting a little low...lowering an airmatic car isn't easy I'd wager...I wonder if it has suspension issues too.
Oh yeah, fake wood steering wheel trim is also a big turn-off. People who are into such cars don't do things like that.
I have seen Cayennes in the mid 20s around here. If I wanted a big pointless SUV, but one with enough bling to impress the local chavs, I'd do it the right way and just get a G55. It's kind of an idiotic vehicle, but it's going all the way. :shades:
Spot package...good catch, Shifty...maybe that just means someone spilled their drink in it.
Thanks for the opinions. I ended up selling on Craigs List for $1100 and did disclose engine problems. I am most certain I spun a bearing as it was not the lifters. The guy who bought it is a former honda mechanic and purchased for a project car. I posted on Craigs list and sold within 24 hours. I recommend Craigs List in these situations. This was the first time I sold anything on there but had multiple calls as soon as I posted with the engine problems described.
Decided to get my motorcycle license once again---the "road test" is not going to be a problem as I have ridden for many years, all kindsa bikes. But I don't own a motorcycle at present (and nobody lets you test drive one without a license) so I decided to borrow one.
At first my good neighbor lent me his Harley Sportster, 1996 model, but I was so horrified driving it I decided to use my friends vintage Triumph Bonneville.
I know Harley has been successful, and maybe the 2009 bikes are way better, but this '96 was the worst bucket of bolts on two wheels I've experienced in a long, long time. No wonder the riders act angry. I'd be, too if I paid that much for that little back in '96.
The Triumph is very sweet, handles like a race horse (which is good for the test) and hopefully won't leak on the instructor's foot.
Interesting, too that the Triumph is worth 4X the Harley.
I think I'll get either a Norton Fixer-Upper (did I repeat myself?) or an older BMW.
I had the same experience with a friend's base '90 Sportster. It's like Harley figured out how to make the least expensive bike with a Harley engine. Shocks? Two steel rods with decorative trim...
I've always regretted not buying my brother's Norton when he sold it (he got tired of the British maintenance requirements...). But Dallas is not much fun for bikes
Really. I would think the weather would be pretty good for riding most of the year.
I know, the Harley felt like something you built in your backyard when you were 12.
British bikes can be pretty reliable if you stay on top of them (figuratively I mean). Good battery, tighten things up once a week, buy the workshop manual and overhaul the carburettors as soon as you get the bike!
As long as the fog doesn't roll in from the sea, you do get a great ride in the Bay Area, that's true. I'm not as tough on a bike as I used to be. I wimp out earlier. But I'll never have a faring or a helmet shield. Hate those.
I used to think about those electric suits but then I realized----an electric suit attached to a British bike? Talk about a pollyanna complex---LOL!
1. i have a very rare car here in the states. a 1989 VW Motorsport Rallye Golf syncro. It 1 of 5000 made for the world for FIA homologation back then Its all wheel drive and supercharged with a factory front mount intercooler, all done at vw motorsport It one of about 25 know Rallye's in the country. It only has about 85k miles on it. I have a shop here in Atlanta specializing in vw/audi/porsche and have put tons of new parts on it since i've had it,about 5 yrs.I would drive this across country tomorrow. Its very similar in style to the e30 M3's,which i also used to own not that long ago. Let me know if this is interesting enough, and i can send many more pics and info. The value has been put at about $15-$17k,but it just sits in my showroom, and looking for a nice DE track car/daily driver
3. 1981 VW Rabbit Truck with professionally installed 16V 2.0 and quad Cabriolet headlight conversions. Momo wheels, shift knob, and steering wheel. Recaro Seats. PIAA auxiliary light system, Neuspeed springs, Koni shocks, Eurosport upper/lower braces, Cold A/C. No rust, never hit. Comes with matching trailer. A separate close ratio GTI transmission will also be included.
1-And you'd get parts how? Sure sounds like fun, though. 2-You always wanted to be a 'Badass', right? 3-Let's see how much of this pickup we can replace...probably one of the best handling pickups out there, as long as you don't have too much to pick up...
I totally agree. They just seemed odd enough that I thought I should share.
The only offer that I am currently interested in is an S2000. I am waiting on pictures. If it isn't completely stock, I don't really have any interest. Nobody seems too willing to part with much cash these days.
I test drove this Audi A6. The airbag light was on, the trip computer display was completely shot, front tires were bald, erratic idle, uneven and weak turbo boost...
I ran away screaming, again cured of my desire to own any sort of Audi.
I wouldn't touch a pre-2005 A6 with a 10 foot pole. I have had 2 co-workers who have had them, and they have both had lots of issues. That 2.7 can really be a headache.
1. sounds very interesting. would need to learn alot more about it, though.
2. well, CJ7 was my first ride and I loved it and always swore I'd get another. I would not, however, want one so far off the ground with those ridiculous tires.
3. uhhhh... ummm... i suppose this falls under the heading "there is a fan for every vehicle."

S2000 is a pretty cool car. You have to like to rev 'em up though. The newer ones have more torque and a lower redline. I'd seriously consider that car if it were really sharp.
If an Audi isn't under warranty, you don't want it, period.
I agree about the Audi A6. Stay away. The middle screen is not just a trip computer, but also gives you other info and maybve some vital warning lights. The dealer is not touching it because it'll cost about $1k to fix afaik.
I'd consider an S2000 as well. When they bumped the displacement to 2.2L, it made the vehicle more driveable around town, with more lower end torque, and less noisy. Although the 2.0L early models are fast and scream loud, you might get tired of ther noise after the first week or so. But overall one of my favourite cars I've ever driven.
The blinker module on the car is still acting up, it amuses me. This time it worked about 75% of the time, compared to the last time I drove it, when it worked not once. It has three modes - normal, fast dim blink, and one blink and then nothing. Other than that...the car continues to amaze me, at its age and unrestored state it starts right up and just likes to be driven.
The car has many minor problems, but none enough to keep it off the road. I try to do something to it each year....this year I am going to go after the oil leak (I am hoping and praying it is just a pan gasket, as I see seepage there) and if that is simple, I might see if it needs a valve adjustment - I suspect it does, as it lets out a puff of smoke if it idles for a period when warm. I am also waiting for these 10 year old tires to get cruddy so I can get some correct wide whites - but I won't toss perfectly good tires, so that can wait. The paint is a little tired, the body is imperfect, and there's some minor rust in the trunk...but for the age of the car, it is all very unimportant. The car looks decent as is, and a restoration would cost a fortune, so unless I land a huge promotion or win a lottery, it's not going to happen anytime soon.
I kind of like the patina it has on it anyway...the chrome has held up amazingly well, the paint still gets a great shine at some angles, the interior is acceptable, and this way I don't have to be obsessed with a paint chip or something else trivial. I can drive it. .
The S2000 sounds pretty nice. It is a 2000 model with right at 100K on it. Silver/Black, up to date maintenance, owned by a Honda technician. The top has been replaced with a newer, fancier one with a glass window and a defroster. What do you guys think it is worth?

The most beautiful car in the last 5 years AND a guaranteed future collectible.
And no sale :confuse:
The scammers aren't even trying to conceal the fact that they're in Nigeria anymore.
Anyone that falls for this had to be living under a rock for the last 20 years.
