Our immediate condo is fine, I’m told, but the building has some damage. A tree fell on the roof of the condo across the hall from us, and apparently some downspouts have traveled elsewhere in the wind.

I looked at an I30 once. Much like an early Lexus ES, they didn’t hide the Maxima roots well.

I’d take that old Ford Taurus as a winter beater. Hard to get anything that runs for that price.

I’d also like that Studebaker but without those wheels and the boom box.

Is that rocker rot on the passenger door opening of the 68 fintail? I much prefer the quad headlights, just looks better and more up market.

The rear passenger sill looks a little suspect, and I see some bubbling at the top of the headlight bezels - both common rust areas.

All diesel and 4cyl gas fintails were single light/W110 cars, along with the base model 2nd series 6cyl (230, not 230S). The front end of the W110 cars was also slightly shorter. They were the entry level cars.

Lovely modern classic, the kind of car you either want a perfect time capsule or one where someone else has done the fine tuning (if you aren't a DIYer), as they can be expensive to put right.

Interior really is nice. Price is $5K so not outrageous, but the problem is that it is a Biturbo. Those have such a bad reputation.

SLK32 is pretty rare, I think I've only seen 2 or 3 in person. Not the best era for MB products, it seems a lot of material introduced during the DCX era can be risky - like the engineers and execs were distracted.

Hoovie will make enough off a couple videos to cover it, and he can afford to eat the cost anyway.

Took the fintail on the Saturday morning errand run - although we are in an unusually warm and pleasant October, I sense winter is about to knock on the door, and I need to get some drives in while I can. The car ran perfectly and got a couple waves and compliments. I am noticing a bearing noise from the front of the car, I suspect either a belt/pulley is out of adjustment, or the water pump might be making noise, doesn't seem to be the generator. Getting it in for the annual service I do around this time of the year might be tough this year, as I was informed one of the techs at the shop I patronize passed away, one of the guys who worked on older cars, and now they are backed up for oldies. As the oil can't have more than 1000 miles on it, I can probably risk it.

I like the 39’ Lincoln if for nothing else than it has a V12. It’s amazing how much styling changed between that and the 35’ Ford.

Thanks for referencing this post to me, Fin. It surprises me that anyone would be trying to flip a 1985 380SE, but good luck to him. With less than 100K miles, it's just getting broken in.

The e320 isn’t a flipper, per say, but an actual dealer. And, per the ad, a “boned” dealer, at that. Guess that means they are in way too deep on their inventory.

Well, a guy with a dealer license, which I am sure takes at least 10 minutes of paperwork Presentation to me looks like a car bought from an estate and put back on the market 2 weeks later, like so much material on BaT etc. Maybe a step above a curbstoner, but not a huge step.

I am sure it is easy for one to get boned in a probable slowing market, where they are charging BaT or big city prices in a small market for a niche car (I'd be shocked if it passed 10K on BaT).

I swear it was priced at $9500 some months ago - these aren't appreciating at quite that level. One thing I will say about the ad, the car isn't over-detailed, if anything, it should look a little cleaner inside to justify the price.

I've thought about you and that car, and how a replacement for the old car might not make you happy as it would always be compared with the prior version. But at the same time, you might find its twin.

Moving the headlights into the fenders and tucking fenders into the body did wonders. 1940 cars are like alien spaceships compared to 1930 cars.

Had the fintail out for a couple hours earlier today, including on some outlying arterials where traffic moves at 55-60 - no issues. I notice once the car is up to full temp, the bearing noise is noticeable. It is definitely from the front of the engine. I hope it is an aging water pump or generator, and not an engine issue. Car is running fine with no other odd noises, no odd smoke, etc. When the engine is cold, no odd noise.

I saw a Mark II at the Saratoga auction a few years ago. White. Beautiful. Those were more expensive than a Rolls Royce when new.

the BMW is funny. It may not even be possible to get that one back up to speed no matter how much money you have. Or if you could, I would bet it would cost at least 10x what it would be worth afterwards.

at least it is cheap. Might be able to harvest some parts, or just keep it in the driveway as a conversation piece?

So .... my mind was wandering this afternoon (as is often the case).

I may have mentioned that my son owned a mid-90's Mustang (3.8L V6, automatic) not long after he graduated high school 15 years ago.

When I was recently in CA, I discovered that he still owns it, and it's parked at his FIL's house. I don't think it's running, and I don't know what's wrong with it.

Wouldn't it be a hoot to swap in a V8, maybe a stick shift, upgrade the suspension a little bit, attend to some minor appearance items, and turn it into a decent runner for not much money.

So, I joined an SN95 forum and am starting to ask questions of the experts there. Wondering if it would be worth $5-10K to pull this off. I wouldn't be looking for the fastest car, just something with a nice V8 burble, maybe a wrap as an affordable way to change the color, slightly larger wheels and tires. Just a fun toy. I'd keep it in the summer, and the son could have it in the winter, when it wouldn't do me any good.

my take? first, I would bet that it would be cheaper to just buy a comparable condition 1998 Mustang GT and get the same end result, much easier and cheaper!

and it probably only makes sense if you have the shop, tools and talent to do the work yourself.

also, there are likely a lot more differences than you would think. stuff like different subframes, suspension pieces, computers, and a bunch of little stuff. I bet you would need a wrecked GT to park next to it and steal all the parts from (a rear end wreck of course!)

but it does sound like a fun retirement project!
