Yes, we get the recently renamed Chevy Kalos, ex Daewoo. We also get the Matiz and Lacetti, but of course no real Chevys - although by way of a slight contrast the Corvette is not that uncommon in London as there are companies that import them direct. We never see any of your normal Chevys though, except the odd foreign plated example or in connection with US forces etc ie USAF at Mildenhall etc.

Passed one of these in traffic yesterday - first one I've seen for a while, they don't tend to be in everyday traffic anymore, more just for shows etc. Still see the old 3-wheelers though!
  • negativenegative Member Posts: 107
In '87 I nearly forced one of those three-wheelers off the M62. I was changing lanes and just didn't see it. For some reason, the driver seemed displeased.

I have a 1955 MG Magnette ZA but it is not actually on the road at the moment awaiting fairly major work on the engine and transmission - unfortunately its last bout of unreliability coincided with us buying a new (old) house, and I'm supporting the local building industry by employing them to rebuild it to give them something to do before they start on the Olympic Stadium (which will be cheaper). If I ever stop spending on this place the Magnette is priority number 1 but my everyday car is a 5 year old Fiat Seicento Sporting, so I would imagine that will pack up next and postpone the MG again. One day....

I inherited the MG from my grandfather years ago when I was a student (he had bought it for £20), and it has had several periods where it has been laid up - (house, marriage, divorce, flat, etc...) but over that time I have actually used it for quite long periods, sometimes a couple of years- never as an everyday ride - but until I retire in another fifteen years I'm never going to get it sorted properly - just to get it back on the road unrestored is my aim for the present. It is sound as I had all the underside welding done about twelve years ago (they rot in the sills) but it is blessed with ancient wiring and of course reliable Lucas components, so a tow truck is never far away. Only 1489cc, and it weighs more than the Queen Mary, so performance is not earth shattering, but we don't pay road tax on cars pre1973, and it is great to drive on country roads, though its too lumpy in traffic as it gets too hot in jams. Thirsty though - we don't get your cheap fuel (!?!) (hence the Seicento).

I had a mate at college who had a couple of Reliant 3 wheelers, each worse than the last, he always had to have enough money to get home on the bus...They tip over, too, if provoked....

It looks a lot like a ca. 1990 Volvo rendition of a second-gen Prelude.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
I had a Nissan Micra hire car (previous model) a couple of years back as a courtesy car while mine was in for insurance repairs, and that had CVT. It felt slow, but found that it had a 'sport' setting on the transmission selector, and that transformed it - I suppose it took up the slack in the rubber band.Years ago, my mother nearly bought a Volvo 340 which had a version of the old DAF system (they were really a DAF successor) but luckily she went for something else...
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
IIRC Volvo bought DAF lock, stock and barrel.

I'm not sure of the model, so I'll say a Plymouth Satellite. And it's probably a '68. Side marker lights, but no head restraints.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
    Close, it's a '70 911T. I figured it wasn't too hard but I just love the look of early 911s (911/901).

1946 Mercury - the 47 had a chrome surround to the upper grille.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Well that car's a little rough but the ad says it's a '47. Maybe they haven't found a surround for it yet. ;)

    1967 Pontiac GTO?
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
    too big. That's a Bonnie isn't it? Probably 66-67?

Although I always get confused between the Catalina/Bonneville......was the Gran Prix available that early?
  • negativenegative Member Posts: 107
Definitely a '66 Pontiac. (We had one that was wrecked in '71 when an oncoming car crossed the line. Luckily, only minor injuries.) I will say a Bonneville. I think if it were a Grand Prix the front turn signals would be in the grille, and these are in the bumper.

Back in that era, there was also a model called an Executive, which didn't sell very well. I'm not sure where in the food chain it sat.

    1966 2+2 Catalina
Don't the chevrons on the rear fender mark it?

You're right, it's not a GTO or a Bonneville but a fancied up Catalina dubbed "2+2" but it's a '65. The rear chevrons say 2=@ those on the front fender are for the optional 421 which made this car as fast as a GTO IIRC.

Sorry, Andy, but that is a '66, not a '65, which the link to your picture seems to confirm.

A '65 Pontiac has the top headlight jutting out farther than the bottom headlight, and the cowling for the headlights curves away:

My bad  At least I didn't say it was a LeMans.
Other than grillework and trim I wonder what the difference is between the 2+2 and the same year Grand Prix?

'64 and '66 Pontiacs are the ones I have a hard time telling apart. Catalinas and Bonnevilles are easier: the Bonnie has a noticeably swollen rear quarter panel compared to the Catalina.
  • negativenegative Member Posts: 107
The '64 and '66 are hard to tell apart from the front. The '64 and '66 are easiest to distinguish from the back. The '64 has vertical tail lights:

    image

and the '66 has horizontal ones:

    image

We had a '64 Catalina Safari, a '66 Catalina, a '70 Catalina Safari, a '73 Catalina Safari... My father always insisted that Pontiacs were so much more reliable than Chevys, which he had nothing but contempt for.

As for Andy's error, so he's human after all.

    It's a '64 Alfa Spider, so most likely a 1600.
and, yes, that is a PF emblem. I find it hard to follow the Giulia/Giulietta thing but I think the full handle would be Alfa-Romeo Giulietta Spider 1600
