    I'm thinking 1963 Mercury Meteor.

No, its not that VW. I'm looking ahead on the lane with the M Benz at our end.

Nine or ten cars ahead of the M-B there is a small rounded car at about the point where the which I assumed is a VW although it might be something else - certainly a small roof.

It is three cars beyond that - it is a very wide light or white coloured car, pretty much exactly at the point where the left hand carriageway stats to curve away tour left, while our three lanes of slow traffic crawl on ahead.

Its adjacent to the point where the little triangle of grass appears between the two carriageways. It really is a very wide car with a flat square look to it like a large 58 or so Lincoln.

    Something like this

    How about a 1959 Mercury

Nice 59 Tbird. Can’t tell if it’s white or powder blue, but either way it looks good. My preference for the Square Birds is the 60 one. My Dad had a 60 with the optional sun roof, a $212 option! Lots of good memories.

Its such a big car but the Mercury is big too, and they are related.
Having looked again at the little roof in the queue which I thought was a VW it looks smaller like a pick up truck cab or similar so I don't think it was another VW anyway
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,662
Yep, '59 Mercs were really big, we had a Monterey that I learned to drive on, it was sort of like driving a tanker.

That car looks like it has smaller taillights so perhaps it is a '57 or '58.

I was going to say it is a Brazilian Chevy Opala, but I see it is RHD, so then a Holden Monaro.

now that, is a good looking car. Obviously a Ferrari. I have no clue of model names on this since the 70s though. At least the engine is in the front where it belongs.

I'm not sure I agree that the engine "belongs in the front." Enzo Ferrari believed this and had to be dragged into putting the motor behind the driver in his race cars. He finally adopted the mid-engine layout for his racing cars because the laws of physics dictated it should go there and above all the Commendatore wanted to win in F1 and Sports car racing.

It's true that front engine sports and GT cars are often good-looking with their long noses and short rear decks but there's no law that says cars with rear or mid mounted motors can't look just as good. As proof, I offer you Ferrari's first mid-engine design for the street>

Who's going to tell Stickguy what that Ferrari GT is?

It's a 2005 Ferrari 575 Maranello. I don't any way to tell one from another just by looking Maranello Italy is Ferrari's home town.

Here's a nice shot that you can blow up with lots of cars of varying yrs. I think the oldest car is the closest to the camera at the bottom, next to it is one of the newest. Have at it guys.

Wow. Big Bear at the Town and Country shopping center on Broad Street in Whitehall. Maybe 1 mile away from where my dad bought his first house. At the far end there's even an Alber's market that I don't recall being there. Driving away from the camera and headed toward Alber's I see a black/dark 1950ish Chevy with a lady walking behind it. Like many pics I have of the Columbus metro area in the 50's, people are dressed well enough to visit the inmates instead of looking like escapees.

I have to start paying more attention. I think I could have pegged that as Columbus, even though I don't remember that particular shopping center. (and, that picture likely taken before I was born, or close to it)

Car nearest the camera is a 48-50 "bathtub" Packard, looking less bathtubby at this angle. I will also pick off the white 56 Ford Country sedan turning right into the parking lane facing away from the camera, near center.

Was Alber’s achain? We had one near us in Cincinnati, in the early ‘60s.  I didn’t know there were more.

Gray Drug stores were in Ohio, Florida, and Maryland.
Albers were in Ohio and Kentucky.
I'll go with the photo's being taken in Ohio.

Albers Super Market started in Cincinnati and had 66 stores operating in Ohio and Kentucky when they were merged with (bought out by) Colonial Stores. I don't remember the last time I saw an Albers super market open for business but the Colonial Stores timeline indicates that Albers was sold off in 1974. A few years later Grand Union bought Colonial Stores.

Your monitor has way better resolution than mine. I can't make out any of the cars at the Albers end.

I was just zooming in on the Albers store and saw the black car pointed that way. Not clear at all but I'm just guessing based on the shape and the long straight bumper. The pedestrian is blocking view of any identifying trim on the trunk of the car.

I think I see it now in the next right lane going away. Could be anything but something says Studebaker to me.--

Is there any car that could be older than that '48-'50 Packard? I don't see one unless the car coming towards the camera is a similar vintage Olds. It's mostly hidden by the tall post in the center.

Next to the Packard is a two-tone MoPar H/T--HMN they think it's a DeSoto--don't know how they can tell.

On the right side about 1/2 way down we see a '53(?) Dodge turning into a parking lane followed by a '56 Ford Country Sedan. You can only see the tail end of the car in the first parking space on the right, but I think it's a Jag XK, probably an XK140, Any other guesses?

Yes, a 1955 DeSoto. The biggest clue is the location of that V.

It's too big for an XK, in medical diagnostics they say "If you hear hoofbeats, don't look for Zebras". In the context of a 1955 Ohio shopping mall a Jag is a Zebra. B)

In the foreground of Big Bear, I believe the light coupe with dark top may be a 55 DeSoto with a similar vintage Studebaker across from it.

Oops - just saw Lostwrench spotted the DeSoto. I indentified it by the toothy grill and lack of fins in the back. Always liked that year DeSoto and Dodge.
