usually couple beetles and a batwing!

and appears to be at far left, a woody 1960 Ford country sedan. though the woody part might be a shadow since can only really see the front end.

Lower right next to the Oldie Olds is a '73 Cougar with half vinyl top.

White wagon at far left looks like a 61 Mercury to me.

However, at lower right beside a batwing (appears to be a 60) Chevy is a blue and white 60 Ford wagon!
  • omarmanomarman Member Posts: 2,702
Looks like a light '60 Ford parked straight in at Woolworth's.

Aha I see that 60 as well, under the "OO" of Woolworth's.

White wagon near the Olds is a Rambler, yeah.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,612
Yes, a Rambler American. A more or less contemporary Rambler wagon, black, lurks at the end of that row (mostly hidden by the green Mercury wagon).

This is a collection belonging to a tech mogul that is now up for auction to satify tax liabilities. It certainly defines the word "eclectic":

I'll pick off the red car in the foreground; it is a Fiat 8V (mid 50s?) with a Ghia body.

The boys at GM Design back then must have been really challenged trying to adapt the tubular rear quarter panels of the '61/'62 Olds body to a station wagon design.

Speaking of GM Design, here is a good example of how GM was just really good at spending money back in the day:

    image

    image

What you are seeing is a customized GMC motorhome built for the upper echelons at GM, used by them to view models of proposed designs outside while circling the Design Center patio, to ensure they were protected from the heat of summer or the cold blasts in winter. Special custom windows and seating facing that wall of glass. Pics courtesy of Dean's Garage. Amazing.

It's the Lightweight coupe version of the E-Type, designed for endurance racing, a few "continuation" examples were made in recent years.

I suppose the right 300Sc cabrio might hit 7 figures. Just as special as anything else in the shot, even with its subtle prewar-inspired looks.

interesting mix. top left, a gen 1 Capri. Bottom right, next to the Mustang Mach 1 (I think a 1971), a mid 70's Corolla. Might be an E-5, based on the 2 hood "vents". Mine had that! Usual boatload of Beetles, an a Peugeot 504 Wagon . Assume a diesel!

Wherever it is, they like Beetles. My "rare-sighting" eye is drawn to the Peugeot wagon in the middle of the nearer diagonal parking row between the two Beetles and the Pinto wagon.

  • omarmanomarman Member Posts: 2,702
Yes that Mustang Mach 1 could be a '71 or '72 without seeing the back. Funny now looking at the proportions of the Mustang parked next to the Corolla back then. Maybe only 6" difference in length for the 2020 models.

I don't think it's either, it's the rare lightweight racing version raced in enduros like Sebring, LeMans and Targa Florio. A handful were madeabd raced back in the day, and more recently they've built a few "continuation cars.

It's probably a slightly different place now - this is the cheap end of the Kings Road - the other end about a mile away is in Chelsea. I imagine the site is a block of luxury flats now!

Even worse, I'm older than this photo...
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,152
@magnette - tell us more about "car sales on a bombsite" in '59 - was it common for car lots to be on destroyed areas?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
    edited April 2020
I think the whole of the used car trade in London, Liverpool and a lot of other cities would have had sites like this. I grew up in South Wales and our nearest bombed cities were Cardiff and Swansea, but I can remember similar sites when I was a kid in the sixties - especially near the docks. London got bombed heavily not just in the East but all across the riverside suburbs - including Fulham. There is a railway viaduct behind this site so I think it's part of the Underground line there but it would have been a residential area and not that posh - Chelsea was of course but Fulham had industries too.

Even when I was in college in East London in the mid seventies there were whole areas of dereliction - especially near the docks - and they would have car lots too. It's all changed now, of course.

There is actually a website which shows the location of bombs dropped in London, I looked at it for our street here in North East London, when we moved here, and we could tell our house which is pre war was missed by a stick of bombs because there are two blocks of flats over the road from us and one diagonally in each the two adjoining streets - they all came out of one plane I expect in a single line.

I worked with someone about ten years ago and her boyfriend's flat in another bit of London was evacuated when workmen in the basement of their block found a bomb - the army come along and defuse it or whatever and take it away to the marshes to blow it up. Happens fairly often although it's less common nowadays in central London as most of those were found years ago with redevelopment.
