1981, the golden age of the automobile. Sadly, most 60 Fords had aged off the road by then:

"Welcome to Malaise Motors! We have the region's largest inventory of unappealing, no-fun-to-drive cars so COME ON DOWN!!! We'll be sure to put you behind the wheel of something completely unsatisfying!" :sunglasses:

Interesting thing about that pic is that in that year in that part of Texas, the imports seemed to have barely made a dent in the big three, and it looks like GM still had 50% or more of the market.

Around the time my dad moved from a 70 Mustang to a Plymouth Horizon 5-door - talk about a change. However, to be fair, he liked the Horizon a lot. Probably one of the better choices that year.

3rd row in, 3rd car from left, a MB W115 240D/300D. 7th row in, between a gigantic Uncle Buck Grand Marquis coupe and a late 70s Cutlass coupe, appears to be the cat eye rear lights of a 60-61 Comet, so kind of related to a 60 Ford.

Now we are in my vintage! Love the 75-77 Camaro Z28. I’d like one today. Plymouth arrow on left in front of a coupe d’ville, and far right middle a pacer! They were rare to see even back when they were new.

    OH no, the 70s again!
The black Camaro is the only car in that pic I can stand but I'd rather have a Mustang.

    OH no, the 70s again!

    Good times!

There was no Z28 option for Camaro in either '75 or '76. But Chevy brought it back '77. The Z in the pic looks like a '79 with the new wrap around spoiler/fender flares.

I can't see a 60 Ford but I am interested in a car in the middle distance.
In the second aisle about six from the left is a dark Ford pickup and in the same position in the next aisle -that is, two cars ahead of it, is a car which makes me think of a 60 or maybe 61 Comet.

It has diagonal tail lights and a Ford like roof line -it's dark and clearly older than most of the rest. - it's the second car from the left in that aisle

EDIT - sorry - I've just realised Stickguy spotted this Comet further back - my apologies.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,237
My candidate for oldest though would be in the distance virtually under the Sunrise Mall sign.
Just behind the white van with the cab door open, there is black or dark sedan which is old - like early 50's. I thought maybe GM - maybe an Oldsmobile -but no clue what it is.
Next to it on the left is a is a white sedan but next to that is another Pacer
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,626
Good eye on the oldie, magnette. I didn't look that far out. Definitely an early 50s GM 2 door sedan, to my eye anyway. 3 to the left of it, perhaps an early Subaru.

    Hickory Hollow Mall, Nashville.

Those vans were very popular here, too. I remember my aunt had a "Trail Wagons" Econoline (made in Yakima), and a family friend had a "Country Cruiser" Econoline (made in Elkhart).
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,756
almost no imports either, very odd by 1989. But there is a random S class Mercedes in the front row! A mid-80s Accord hatch a few rows up.

plus what is that dark 4 door at the very bottom right? looks sorta like a Volvo but don't think it is. Either an Audi or a big Toyota.

Bottom right, dark colored car next to a Buick, is a 2nd gen Camry.

This is a 21.5" Mac, although it's getting on a bit now - like it's owner. They do have clear resolution though.

In the foreground, following the five window coupe ('32-'33Ford?) is a Chevy Nomad wagon, a rare bird then, even more rare now. The louvered hood probably covers a modified engine.
Behind it is a modified '58-'61 Corvette with a big supercharger popping up thru the hood.

Yep the 5 window Ford is a 32, sought-after car even then.

Two 57 Ford Rancheros, couple of 60 Fords (yea), 58/59 Thunderbird, 52-54 Ford wagon.

58 (?) Plymouth Savoy sedan amongst the Fords
Chevrolet Styleline? I think it says Deluxe on the wing, and perhaps that's about 1950 or so.
to the right above the 59 Chev with the guys looking at it, in the next row back is 58 Pontiac either a Bonneville or maybe a Star Chief
And at the edge, just leaving shot above F/G 29, os a Buick - I can recognise the rear fins - with another following it which looks less chrome than an Electra so maybe a Le Sabre?

And in a few years time the guy who bought that 60 Ford convertible will probably regret not paying the extra dollars for the same car as an Edsel - they used the same shell when the latter was withdrawn, I assume, and the model year 60 Edsel convertible would have now been serious money as it never made it to the Calendar year.

Also 57 Oldsmobile 88 hardtop two cars right of the three El Caminos. (is the middle El Camino a 60 - the others are 59's)

Fun thought, Edsel vs Ford. A very rare car now, but then probably already had a bad image. I suspect by spring of 60, one could have got that equivalent Edsel at a nice discount from a Sunliner. 1960 Edsel convertible production was a mere 76 units.

purple gremlin with mags. very 70's. 2 up from a baby blue Volvo '71 142. red wagon just below tram looks like a Subaru GL.

far left a red convertible that looks like a Jag E type. and in the center a Red Opel GT

just above that is a nice blue Capri.

quite a few cars in this picture that i wanted when I was a teenager!

I'm having trouble with a car in that pic, directly in front of the blue Capri, a Japanese looking fastback. I know I've seen it before, seems to be on the tip of my tongue, but I can't name it.

Obvious oldie at lower right, possibly ~38 Oldsmobuick or similar. In front of it, a Datsun 710 wagon in that orange-red that probably made up 75% of production.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,434
I get a Nissan vibe from that blue hatchback mostly due to the large badge on the C-pillar.

The Maverick looks like a Grabber with the black tail panel but I don’t see any graphics proclaiming it as such.

darn. that Red wagon is a Datsun. I knew it wasn't a Volvo though it resembles one in the front and side mirrors!

the blue capri behind the purple gremlin (there are at least 3 blue Capris in this picture!). Silver car might be a Mazda. That emblem on the C pillar looks real familiar.

very far left center, a burgandy BMW 2002

funny that there are so few older cars (even 10 YO) in the picture. Today there would be a ton, but you would not even notice most of them.

Nope. I'm very familiar with those, as they are kind of a guilty pleasure. Same general reverse C-pillar, but the proportion is different.

I'll have to give it some thought - many Japanese models then had short runs, it's something obscure, but I know I've seen it before.
