The Mustang is second car in front of the Country Squire.

I think the Squire is a 63 Fairlane

Three cars in front of the pickup/RV is a ‘65-‘66 Mustang.

There's an imported car in that picture (far right)? I'm shocked.

Import at right is a Ford Anglia 105E. Maybe driven by a Ford person - lots of Fords in this pic.

59 Galaxie at bottom 2nd lane from R, two ahead of that a 66 Galaxie.

I think I see another import, a couple behind the oncoming "Standard" truck.

Amazing number of Fords/Mercury in that pic since Lansing was an Oldsmobile factory town.

MSU poster was maybe a German guy? He'd post in the classic group now and then, maybe he is still out there.

More distant foreign car is tough - maybe a small Opel, being Michigan? Also has a Fiat vibe.

I was thinking perhaps an early Vauxhall Viva visiting from north of the border.

I'll chip in the 63 Plymouth in front of the 'Standard' truck. The parents of one of my friends bought one in the day, and for some weird reason it imprinted on my mind.

Sorry - I haven't been online much of late...

I think in Lansing MI the oncoming import looks more like an Opel Kadett than its cousin the Vauxhall Viva HA / Epic

It is difficult at this magnification though

  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,125
I imagine the Kadett was more common in the US, they were selling at Buick dealerships starting in '64. I looks like an "A" version, '64 or so:

MX-3 aka MX-3 Precidia in other markets. These were always uncommon in the PNW, but in metro Vancouver especially they seemed to be on every corner in the 90s.

Don't I know it! I made do with my 90hp GTI, still lots of fun.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,441
better than my 1985 Colt with the whopping 68 HP. good thing it had race tires on that, came in handy for maintaining momentum in turns. Did have to downshift to third on hills on the Palisades parkway to keep moving.

My '85 Accord hatch had, I think, 86 HP.

The '91 Sentra SE I had when I moved to Denver had 110 HP; couldn't convince the (then) wife to splurge another $1K for the SE-R.

Still a boatload of fun with both of those cars, probably due to the slick shifting manual transmissions they had.

My 81 Rabbit diesel had a hammering 51HP. That one was a real screamer.

When I was in my last semester of college, I totaled my '79 Sunbird and needed a new set of wheels. I seriously considered getting a new Escort diesel - the dealer was willing to defer the first payment 90 days so I could graduate and secure permanent employement. My folks shot that idea down, which in retrospect was a good idea as I ended up with the aforementioned '85 Accord hatch after I moved back to CA.

Me too, a1980 non turbo diesel rabbit purchased new.
With no passengers, zero to sixty, 26 seconds.
    I loved that car.
Final mileage, 289,000 miles. I knew a guy who got 400,000 miles on his.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,462
I think our Tempo was something like 90hp? But with a non-revvy engine and the automatic, it could feel slower, especially in passing situations.

Fintail is rated at 134 of the "old" hp, I believe. As the engine is happy being wound up a bit, it feels adequate and is faster than many malaise cars.

I think my '82 Accord hatch with 5-speed had 78 HP. Seemed perky, at the time. It only weighed about 2300 lbs, I think.

Same with my '83 GTI, a bit over 2000 lbs, I think, and geared SHORT. So it was great 0-70 or so, and handled well. I got 25 mpg, in town or on the highway.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 266,718
The Accord.. the only time it hit 100 was down a big hill. But, I averaged about 36 mpg for the first 80K miles, then started having carb issues, and averaged around 32 mpg, after that.

No A/C, which helped. Pretty amazing for a non-FI car.

It drove great, typically awesome Honda clutch/shifter. Decent handling, though it was no GTI.

Magnette ZA was about 60bhp when new (the subsequent ZB three years later was 68 bhp as it had larger carburettors)

However that was when new - in 1955.

I think it would be about 50 bhp downhill now.

    It's all relative

I had several Minis when they were really mini including one with only 848cc's and that had something like 34 bhp but felt much faster once you got to any bends
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 266,718
68 BHP is probably 45 HP in the numbers from '72 on.

I took my '85 Accord on a massive three week road trip - CA to MI, and back. I think the best tank I got was around 45 MPG, in TX and NM on I-40.

It, too, had a carb. I don't think FI was introduced until the '89 or '90 model year; I had a co-worker who owned an LX-i sedan from that vintage.

Yep, I remember those badges specifically. Hers was white with the chocolate brown velour interior. Very plush. Also a stick, IIRC. I got to drive it as we swapped cars for a day - she wanted our Isuzu P'up for some trucky related errands.
