Ginetta G21 1973/8 - actually quite a decent car, and although previous Ginettas were mainly sold as kits, the tax rules changed in 1973, so this was their first to be offered only as a fully built car. 1725cc Chrysler UK engine, so quite nippy, but they could be a trifle skittish in the wet...They made at least 150 though, so they are still around in some numbers - fibre glass so no rust problems, and all were owned by enthusiasts from new so they haven't ever been the sort of car that would be used by Joe Public as basic transport.
1964 Impala Sport Sedan (what I think they called the 4-door hardtop), and a 1973-75 Monte Carlo. Oh, and that thing to the left where you can just see the rump is either a Granada or Monarch.
Because of the size of that front bumper, I think the Monte is a 74 or 5. It's tough to tell. The tail lights were the primary differentiators on those cars.
I tried looking at some 1973-75 Monte pics on the web, and it looks to me like they use the same front bumper. However, the 1973 has an eggcrate grille with smaller openings than the '74, while the '75 seems more of a mesh affair with a bold line running across the center. Also, in 1973 and 1974 the side marker light was two small segments, while the '75 was one segment.
One thing I do remember about the '73 though, was that it was really distinct from the rear. The bumper was integrated much more artfully into the design of the car, and the taillights were recessed a bit. It actually had a sporty, custom look to it. The '74-75 had big, bulky bumpers that stuck out about 4-5 inches, and the taillights were larger, more formal looking, and more flush with the trunk of the car.
The cop car is Smokey's LeMans ('77?) and the car being forced off is a Merc, probably a Marquis Wagon.
Yeah, '77 LeMans. As for the station wagon, I've seen the movie a million times but never really paid that much attention to the car being forced off the road, but I think it's a 1974-76 Gran Torino.
Is that the pass where they show it from another angle, and you can see the Smokey car being hit by the truck? There's also a fintail in the oncoming traffic where he is trying to pass.
There's also a blue fintail in a brief background scene later in the movie.
Yeah, that's the scene where the Snowman clips Buford's car, and he loses control and wipes out along the shoulder, and makes a comment like "What we're dealing with here is a total lack of respect for the law".
Here's another shot later on in the movie that shows the blue fintail in the background...
You can see it here too:
And this shot always made me feel kinda seasick watching it: This is after the Snowman clipped the car, but notice there's no quarter panel damage. :confuse: Also, I never noticed it before, but is that a white fintail in the background, at the left of the pic behind the wall?
The fintail in the oncoming cars in the pass/crash scene is white or off white, maybe it's the same car, I never noticed it in the later scene with the blue car. The south couldn't have exactly been full of those cars, I wonder why they were used. The blue fintail appears to be behind a BMW 2002, another car I wouldn't have expected to see outside coastal areas back in the day.
That "crash" between the Monte and Chevelle is amusing...plain old used cars in 1976 that became collectible. And of course, the Mustang fastback at the gas station is worth mentioning.
Chrysler 300C Touring, basically a Dodge Magnum with a 300C front clip for the European "estate" wagon market. And yes, it's got a Hemi (which must be horrendously expensive over there, but they also get the MB Bluetec diesel V6 as an option).

A lot of the scenes in "Smokey and the Bandit" were actually shot in Ojai, California. I didn't realize that until I found the site I pulled those pictures from. So that might explain why the fintails were relatively common.
I never knew that so much of that movie was shot in California but I guess that makes sense...duh, Hollywood! I had always thought that it was shot in Georgia. I think some parts of it were, though.
I thought the Monte and Chevelle crash was amusing, too, mainly because it just looks like a prop. Notice that the cars don't appear to actually have any damage! I think they used the Monte in another accident scene, where a tow truck was pulling it out of a ditch. It was a scene where Sherriff Justice gets impatient waiting in a long line of traffic, and starts laying into the horn, which gets stuck. He then tries to pass around on the shoulder, when a local cop stops him, tries to cuss him out, but Justice gets the better of him.
...they should put woodgrain trim on that Euro-spec Chrysler wagon and sell it here as a Town and Country! Make mine a nice '70s dark green metallic with a matching vinyl interior!
Oh, I didn't know it was shot in CA either. That explains the foreign cars in some scenes, I am sure. Kind of like all the foreign cars in Mama's Family.
I am sure you've noticed so many old shows where "crashes" were just two cars parked oddly with hoods up and steam coming out of the engine.
The Lincoln looks like an earlier Slabside to me, perhaps a '61 or '62. The ambulance is '55 Poncho, and you're right about the Crosley and the '58 Plymouth. Otter's 'Vette is indeed a '59.
"D-Day" was played by journeyman actor Bruce McGill.
I think the setting for Animal House was supposed to be Faber College ("Knowledge is Good") in 1962... So... all of the cars should technically be '62 models or earlier..
