Looks too small to be American.

I don't understand why it has Japanese-style mirrors on the hood, but it looks to be a European Ford Granada Coupe from the early-mid 70's?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
    Yep, '75 Granada Ghia coupe.

Sunbeam Alpine...I've seen the movie but the name escapes me
  • derrado1derrado1 Member Posts: 194
Where is that, by the way?

I want to say Monaco but I could be terribly, terribly wrong.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,494
    South of France anyway yeah
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Toyota Aurion it is, basically an Australian equivalent to the Avalon.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yep, it's a '53 Sunbeam Alpine, Grace Kelly is in the driver's seat and Cary Grant is the passenger.

    image

I'm not sure about the location but it may be the Principality of Monaco over which Grace would one day co-reign. The movie is
Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief (1955), there are all kinds of cool cars in it.

I think I recall a chase scene in that movie with a Citroen 'traction', a car I have always liked.

    Is it a Trevis?

Brilliant deduction but that's only the sub-model name :P , the full name is Daihatsu Mira Gino Trevis.

    82-85 Supra
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Nope, it's an '86 ;) It turns out that Arizona, where I'm staying for the winter, is a virtual museum for '70s and 80s cars that have long since been consumed by the rust worm in other climes.

The Celica Supra I saw this AM was in remarkable shape as was the K-Car wagon I saw the other day.

I always thought that '86 was the first year for the next generation Supra?

Of course, I was in my '20s then... a lot of stuff is fuzzy...

I think some of the wedge models like that were considered '86s, as the more aero cars were 86.5...IIRC
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Lancias....first one is from about 1950, second are from the 90s, and look very Fiat (Dedra I think).

Yup, the first is a 1950 Lancia Aurelia B50 Spider and the sedan/estate are both Dedras from '91-'92.

Old(smobile) 98. I still see a fair number of them around either as generic domestic beaters, or still driven by the same old ladies who bought them new (a role which passed to Buick after GM's ill-fated attempt to reinvent REO's legacy).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Isn't that an Olds 88?

The 98 had that boxier front-end.

    image

Lady 2 doors down had one, and the guy across the street had an 88, so I saw them an awful lot.

Isn't that a "88" Regency? I think that model was added when the "98" was discontinued?
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,038
I think you're right, Chuck. IIRC, the "real" 98 was discontinued after 1996 due to poor sales. The Park Ave was still selling well, and got restyled for 1997, but the poor selling 98 wasn't brought back. But Olds did put the 98 front-end on the 88, for the few Olds buyers who still wanted a more luxurious 88, and sold it for maybe a year or two. So I'd guess that one pictured is around a 1997-98? IIRC, the whole 88 line was dropped after 1999, but I don't think they offered the Regency trim level till the end.

I kinda like the Olds 88. Wasn't as conservative as the LeSabre, but still not as ribbed and winged as the Bonneville. I thought it struck a nice middle ground.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Yep, it's a 98 Regency. If Olds had made a '98 Ninety Eight they could've called it the 98 Squared. :P
