Sorry, I appreciate that you guys are helping with the system as it is, but whoever made the decision to increase the size of the advertising at the expense of the actual people who provide the content of the site need to be told that their actions aren't approved. Ironically the adverts I can see today include a car which isn't even sold on this continent, ( Buick Enclave), and another which I would count as a rare sighting on one of your other forums, if I saw one here, despite being on sale in UK ( Cadillac CTS)
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Yes, a Toyota Cressida, the first version, and this one is from late 1980/early 81. There are very few Japanese cars of this era still in everyday use in Britain - I am more likely to see a Lamborghini than a Toyota this old...
  • hudsonthedoghudsonthedog Member Posts: 552
Besides the Cressida, (from left to right) there's a Renault Clio, (can't make out the car behind the Renault, but the roofline looks somewhat like that of a Vauxhall sedan), Mini, (can't make out the hatch in the driveway), Fiat hatch (?), Ford Transit (?), (can't make out the red car), Volkswagen Golf, and Ford Transit

It's pretty US centric around here; we don't even attempt to track Canadian pricing which I'm sure a lot of our next-door neighbours would appreciate. Fortunately a lot of folks post pricing info in the forums.

As far as the text area, it did increase a bit in size not too long ago when we got rid of the left sidebar.

If you increase the font size in your browser, you can move the ads off the edge of the screen a bit, although that takes some getting used to. Try 125% in IE.

I have the advantage of being able to see the original photo, about 4 times the size of the version I posted, and on a crisp LaCie monitor, and I can't see some of these cars either. You must have good eyesite !
I agree the Clio, I'm not sure about the possible Vauxhall behind it in the hedge, then there's the Mini, and after that, I really can't be sure of the next car in the hedge - I thought maybe a Fiat Tipo, but blown up the back doesn't look right for that either.
The silver car visible beyond the Transit at the road junction, is a Ford Fiesta I think, the red thing is another Transit, actually a local bus for the disabled, then on the right, behind the Cressida, is a VW Golf, and another Transit.

I can concur that your site is understandably US Centric - to register I needed a State and zip code - apparently London,England is in California, zip 99999 !

Well, the rusty estate certainly generated some traffic -
It is a Maico Champion 500G. Champion introduced the 2-door coupe ( the 400) in 1952 and an estate version followed in 1954, the 500G. The motorcycle manufacturer MaiCo took over production in early 1955, but finished in 1957/8. Although they made several hundred of the coupe, only about a dozen of the estate car were made by the latter firm and this is one of those - possibly the only surviving one...
Interestingly this particular car was apparently brought to Britain when virtually new, as there were plans to manufacture it, and the coupe, under licence, but these came to nothing.

Looks like my brother's old Chevy Chevette, Brazil-spec.

But that logo must be some other GM division. Opel? Vauxhall? maybe an Aussie Chevette 5 door?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,422
    Vauxhall Senator? ca. 1980
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,422
So there's a motorcycle connection after all. Interesting.

Not something I ever would have guessed, or even remember now that you've posted the aswer. Here's a brochure for it, auf Deutsch, selbstverständlich!

I'm having trouble with the badging as well. It's related to the Holden/Vauxhall Commodore and it's from a RHD country, which makes me think South Africa (since it's not wearing a Vauxhall or Holden badge), but it's also not badged as a Chevrolet. I don't think it's an Isuzu Aska because the grille just doesn't look like an Isuzu (but RHD would make the argument for Japanese).

Hudson is nearest with a Vauxhall Commodore - it is actually a Vauxhall Viceroy, only sold for two years 1980/82, and this particular one is 80/81. It is basically an Opel Commodore, 2500cc, with a reworked grille etc. There is a vauxhall badge, just about visible near the bit where the sun is reflecting.
I suppose this must be the forgotten Vauxhall.

I have no idea about the racing beast, but I do spot the nose of a facelift MB W211

Austin Maxi? Looks nearly identical to the car used by the Griswolds in 'European Vacation'.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Yes this is one of the last Maxi's from 1980. This one is a Maxi 1750.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
    I wondered whether anyone would get this - I see this car every year, chasing the London - Brighton Veteran car run, - it's just approaching Westminster Bridge in this shot - that's Parliament in the background. Not an everyday site in Central London, I must admit- Here's a shot of another one;

It's a Ronart W152, and the noisy bits are Jaguar, usually XJ6.

    It is a three-wheeler - but not a Reliant.
  • hudsonthedoghudsonthedog Member Posts: 552
    That's a Bond Mk G Estate (wagon).
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Well done, hudson, it is indeed a Bond Mk G Estate - here's the front...

Current from late 1960, theoretically to 1966, but very few were sold after about 1964.

For a bonus, what is the white estate car in the distance ?
  • hudsonthedoghudsonthedog Member Posts: 552
The green one is a Borgward...and I'm working on the white one...

I want to say the white car is a Hillman.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,422
    Yep an Isabella TS

I think the white car could be a Vauxhall Victor...FD?
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Yes on the Borgward Isabella, but so far no hits on the white car...

Holden Calibra (AKA Vauxhall/Opel Calibra) - not a bad design for 1991
  • tomicatomica Member Posts: 23
Only other one I know would be Cortina.
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
Well, it's a Ford Zephyr Mk4 - or possibly a Zodiac, it's a bit difficult to tell. There is a silver saloon version a bit further to the right, which you can just see sticking out, but the estate was quite unusual even when new... It would be about 1966/71.

Looks kind of like a car my cousin once owned. Is it a 1976 or thereabouts Toyota Corona Mark II?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
    That's it Lemko, it's a 1975 Toyota Corona Coupe.

Chevy S10 Xtreme, a radically sophisticated vehicle.

Audi and Porsche engineers have been known to secretly tear these apart to see what the cutting edge of technology really looks like (hence the model name :P ).

Can you (or one of your friends over the pond) expand on the meaning of "53reg" in this thread?

As you know, British registrations are age related, ie the car has a letter or more recently a number indicating the period when it was first registered. There are lots of exceptions to this, in particular people buy old registrations, which aren't age related, but basically the current system since 2001 is that on 1st March, each year, a new period starts, so for Mar 2003 all registrations would be xx 03 xxx (the x's are letters). Then on 1st September it changes again, half way through the period, (more or less), to xx 53 xxx.
On 1st Mar 2004 the next period starts, hence xx 04 xxx..

So the car in question has a plate issued between 1st Sep 2003 and 29 Feb 2004.
