    BMW Z1?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,592
BMW Z1 with an odd hardtop...I don't recall seeing it with a hardtop before.

Pic seems to be from Netherlands or Belgium.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Fintail and Stpehen are both correct.

It is a Z1, not sure where the photo was taken.

    Tidbits accordong to Wiki:

Z1 was known for it's unusual drop down entry doors that made ingress and egress difficult. Built between 89 and 91, on a unique chassis, and fitted with a 2.5L inlilne 6 from the 325, tilted to make it fit under the low hoodline.

Apparently because of the vehicle's dashboard size/design, none came wih a/c as there was not enough room for both a heater and air conditioner.

The one I test drove years ago was an L and it was a stick.

No way I'll remember if it had the red stitching, though. It did have leather, however.

Found an S without the stitching, though.

I wonder if the one with the stitching isn't a Q?

    Skoda Octavia?
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
It still has a double red stripe along the border of the instrument cluster. Not sure if that was an S-only item or not.

    Skoda Octavia?

    I'll sum up to that.

jbl and steven correct. Skoda Octavia. Skoda is doing quite well since taken over by VW in the 90s iirc.

Most of their products are based off current VW platforms, and are highly rated by various automotive critics wherever the cars are sold.

I had the chance to ride in some Octavia taxis while vacationing in Israel few years ago. Very nice cars, and similar in deisgn, materials, and fit and finish to VW.

Oh, now I see it around the instrument cluster. You're right. That pic posted above has it running down the left of the stack, too, though. That seems kinda weird, and I'm not sure I see it in the pic of the car I posted.

I did read a post on Alfabb that said the red stitching on the shifter and door panels was in the S version only.

Oh well. I gotta stop obsessing over the small details. :)

Ssangyong Rodius, one of the ugliest cars in the world.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Fintail is correct. Ssangyong has a tendency to make ugly copies of german cars. They have ran ijnto financial trouble as well, but I beleive they got bailed out too by their parent company.

    Mitsubishi FTO
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
    Correct Graham.

Surprisingly it was not sold on this continent.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some grey imports arriving from Japan here in Canada, as the FTO came out in 1994, and now meets the 15 years or older requirement to be brought here.

That's BMW's first four wheeler, the Dixi (as indicated on the radiator) ca. 1925.

Photo looks like it's from BMW Welt their new museum in Munich.

The Eclipse was more or less the equivalent on this continent (only the top-trim FTO got that hot-dog V6).
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Yeah, both were FWD, and shared engines.

Any takers on my other mystery car?

Yes, I thought you guys might not know since they never sold the EL in the US.

I always liked them better over the bug eyed look of that generation of Civics even though I had a bug eye Civic myself.

I always thought they'd sell in the states too...it's not like Americans are turned off by badge engineering.

Didn't Canada not get the Integra sedan for awhile or something? There was something weird about the lineup that they used to justify that move.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
When the EL was introduced in 1997 the Integra sedan got discontinued. However we had no Civic with leather available unlike in the US, and the EL was basically an upmarket Civic.

Ok, looks like mine went into the too hard basket, It was a 1910 MAB. It was a truck with a liberty aero engine fitted. Saw this car at a rally. Some punter came up to the driver and asked "How fast is it?". The answer he got was "how big are yours....". Talking with him later and he said on the way to the rally they had come through the northern territory (No speed limits) He had seen 150MPH and backed off as he only had two wheel brakes :surprise: He said it was still pulling and could have gone faster.

Now have a look at the car and see the protection he had while driving it :surprise: He had large brass ones...
  • grahampaigegrahampaige Member Posts: 51
    Ok something a little easier

Looks English, could be a Bentley ca. late 20s or perhaps a Lagonda or Alvis.

Graham it's obvious from your username that you are interested in and know-
legeable about pre-WWII vehicles. Not may of us are.

In the first post of this topic I proposed that we stick to postwar cars and
stay away from one-offs and customs. I think we get better response
and broader participation if we do so. :shades:

Was there a US Civic with leather?

I remember a friend of mine who lived in Seattle liked the EL, and went to look at them in Van...the dealer said Acura had a policy of no out of country sales.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
THere is now the Civic EX-L, but I think '09 is the first year for it.

Your friend would've had trouble bringing in an EL, thanks to US customs, DOT, and EPA certification all requiring documentation.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
Bentley, I'm almost certain, but not sure which species.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
There's people that did conversions to make their Civics look like ELs. You just need the 2 front fenders, bumper, hood grille, and the trunk lid.

The centre stack was slighlty different too but could have been modified.

I always thought that you could get factory leather on a US Civic back in the late 90s.

I think it's pretty easy to bring most Canadian cars into the states - cars sold new in Canada anyway, as emissions and safety regs are pretty similar.

Now for the cool grey market stuff Canada gets, that would be a nightmare.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,592
I have seen a few ELs around Seattle, so they made it down over time. I guess if Acura didn't want to sell them to Americans, a used car dealer wouldn't care.

I don't recall seeing leather Civics until the current generation. OTOH, I think leather Accords started with the 90-93 generation.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
Do you guys have the current EL based off he current Civic?

We do here, but I find it's redundant, as it has nearly the same equipment as the Civic EX does, especially now that you can get leather in a Civic.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,592
Nope, no EL has ever been sold in the US.

I remember seeing one at last year's Van auto show though. I guess it's a badge attraction now.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
The previous EL (01-05) was a nice alternative to a Civic sedan because it offered side airbags, leather, and sunroof, something you couldn't get in a Civic at the time.

Now that equipment levels are nearly identical, you just pay for the badge.

Bingo! it's a '51. One wonders why they bothered converting Opels to RHD rather than importing the equivalent Vauxhall or Holden? :confuse:
