New Civic wagon (which appears longer than the tall looking one in the original photo):

I still think it's the latter one...

If you had a front-end shot of the old one, it would be pretty clear, I think...

I'm wrong a lot in this forum, though... guess that's why I'm not the host, here.. :shades:

This is the only shot I could find of the front of an old model:

Amazing that such stuff exists on the internet at all

I don't know what it is, but that's a big engine

If I still had the Cycle World (3 years ago?) this was featured in, I could look it up, but it's long gone. World's shortest W engine?

    Mystery wagon seen earlier:

    image

76-79 Wagon: Same as yours fintail:

    80-83 Wagon:

While wagon browsing, I also saw this:

    image

    (Apparenlty it's photoshopped)

So that makes the mystery wagon a 79 or older. You can tell by the angle of the C pillars.

I think the Civic is more like a 79 or so...the Chevy beside it appears to be a 55. Nice pair

Fintail gets them both! Hemmings thinks the seller is on crack, figures a clean '79 Civic CVCC wagon is worth perhaps $2,400.

Hard to say, it could be a 49ish Packard.

    That's a 1967 Chrysler Imperial.

I think it is the former one - look at the front turn signal repeater. It is more square then rectangular. Also, the fender lines are the same on the former one and the $8900 one.

Gee for such a sharp eyed group, it seems no one noticed the 3rd cylinder hanging off that Harley engine in the bike photo above.

The bike is a Feuling W-3 with 150 Cubic Inch 3 cylinder design - essentially a Harley twin with an extra cylinder grafted on to it.

    http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/06/03/feuling-w3-powered-motorcycle-heade- d-to-bonneville/

Ah well, that's what happens when you post a picture that is 2 wheels short, even if it does have a 3rd cylinder.

ZAZ (Zaphorozetz). Peculiar Russian thing--air-cooled rear mounted V4 with a plastic timing gear.
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
It also had an oil heater. Meaning you had to put oil into the heater to make it work. No oil = no heat.

Not too surprising considering that rural roads in Russia are probably a bit more challenging than the parking lots at Starbucks where our SUVs usually go. :P

You're on the right track, it is a long wheelbase 250GT. These were bodied by Scaglietti from a Pininfarina design and named 250GT Berlinetta "Tour de France" celebrating Ferrari's mid 50s victories in the long distance French road race similar to the Mille Miglia, not the bicycle race.

There were a very few SWB TDFs also known as "Interim Berlinettas".

VW Squareback. Oh, 1968? No, the rear lights are different. '74?

My wife's family had one of those Type 3's and a Fastback. She hated them.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 57,142
VW Type 4, the 411/412 - the wagon was called "Variant" and I believe these cars had their fair share of problems. Steve is on the right track, as this car was seen as a slightly upmarket replacement for the squareback.
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
From what I can see of the front fender, this one is a 412. The 411 had a rounded nose, while that of the 412 was more like the prow of a boat, or a '70s BMW. Not the high water mark for VW quality, though VW continued to build cars based on it for the Brazilian market till the early '80s.

"Not the high water mark for VW quality" I'm not sure that VW has ever hit the ever-elusive "high water mark".
  • stephen987stephen987 Member Posts: 1,994
I'm not sure that VW has ever hit the ever-elusive "high water mark".

In Europe VWs are widely praised for quality, and prospective buyers sometimes wait months for coveted models such as the high-output diesels. Then again, they are competing against Renault, Peugeot, and Fiat.

A lot of folks want to blame Mexican assembly plants for the supposed decline of VW quality in the US market. They've forgotten the woes associated with the electrical and fuel systems of cars like the German-built 412, or the virtually instantaneous rust of the early (again, German-made) Rabbit and Scirocco.

So try this one on for size:

That's the VW Type 4-based Puma built in Brazil during the 1970s. I saw quite a few when I went to Rio de Janeiro in 1976.

The (Type 4) 412 was an improved version (bigger motor, more HP) of the car we knew as the VW Squareback/Fastback. It was the last of the aircooled VWs.
