The C-Pillar on the Jag XF is a straight teel from Audi, as is the bigmouth grille. If you're going to copy, you might as well copy from the best. It wasn't so long ago that everyonewas copying Jaguar. :P
The shape does look familiar on the XF C-pillar - I'm just not crazy about the blackout on it. Seems like it should either include the chrome strip, or no blackout.
I was going to label it a late DeSoto Airflow, but the setting looks European. Short of wandering around the web for a few hours, I'm completely stumped.
I also thought it might be a DeSoto airflow, but after some web snooping it turns out that it's some type of pre-war Volvo -- either a '35 - '38 PV36 or a PV51 depending on who you believe. Now that's a real 'Mystery'!!!
Bingo it's a 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet which sold recently for 3.5 million. Body by Pininfarina, hence the resemblance to the Spider California. It's much rarer than a California.
Beat the Shifty Extinguisher, B-rated for "the square footage you might expect to cover before you yourself catch fire..." That's a hot one!
Speaking of hot...thanks for posting that Superamerica. When I went to the RM auction site I found more impressive pictures of that car. The 4.0 V-12 looks great even with Fram filters catching the eye. I guess that was OEM back in the day? Also some cool old b+w pics of the same car running at Bonneville circa 1962.
A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.
Exactly! Pretty similar to my first car - '59 Chrysler New Yorker, same body style, same color, same 413 engine (but with only 365 hp), slightly different front end. This one's for sale on eBay asking $60k. I sold mine for $350 back in the day...
I believe the Dodge is more like a '58 (per the quad headlights), and the one behind the Edsel wagon is a 49-50 Ford followed by what looks more like a '50 Cadillac than a Chrysler, followed by another '49-'50 Ford.
Going in the opposite direction on the right looks like a '55 Ford wagon preceded by a '56 Ford sedan preceded by a '52 Mercury and a dump truck (not identifiable).
>Bennington, VT which doesn't look all that different today
Amazing that is true.
But now that I think about it, neither have the two towns of 5-6000 in the old days where I grew changed much downtown. Buildiings have not been razed and replaced with newer facilities for retail because the new retail and business built on the outskirts in plazas and shopping areas... Even the churches have built and the old church buildings remain, empty or used by lesser church groups trying to start a congregation...
The small non-American car in the distance with the Mercury tail-lights isn't an Austin, and it doesn't look like anything else British, at least not as far as I can see, on this less than adequate monitor at work.
Is this shot taken in the US, or is it somewhere else - ie Mexico, or perhaps further south? I ask because the licence plate looks odd proportions for an American registration, and if it is somewhere else then that opens up a range of other possibilites.
(You're all going to tell me it's somewhere famous in the background now like the Treaury building in Washington or something, now, I expect)
Too bad the fuel filler location can't be the same for all cars. Driver's side please.
No thanks, not for me. I prefer the passenger side. People who run out of gas on the highway are much safer on the curb side as opposed to the traffic side while adding fuel. But, to each their own.
in the top picture, 2nd car is a falcon, and it looks like the passenger in the front (obvously with nmo seatbelt) is holding a little kid on their lap (actually, looks like the kid is standing up!)
man, imagine the smush if they hit something, even at 10 MPH.
I realize I probably have some of the years wrong doing them from memory. Please correct. I think I'm confused on the Chev line and years. The 1959 I do know.
Nah, that is a '57...those little round lights are the backup lights. In 1958, they moved the actual taillight down there, and made one cheap, single backup light built into the center of the bumper.
My guesses - (can't make them all out) coming toward us a 64 Chrysler wagon, 65 Falcon, 63 Chevy, 60 Chevy, 65/66 Plymouth Fury a ways back. Other direction - 65/66 Dodge Monaco, mid sixties Dodge Dart, 59 Chevy, 55 Pontiac, 63 Chevy Wagon, 60 Olds, 65 Ford, 59 Chevy.
2nd Pix - Maybe corner of a 65 Caddy, 66 Ford, 64 Studebaker, 59 Chevy, 61 Rambler Wagon, 66 Chevy, 56 Pontiac, another 66 Chevy.
Looks good to me. So the Studebaker is a 64... There's a Studebaker club that runs an orphan cruise in at a local park. I'm going to go the next time they have a cruise in.

It was used by Mercury from 1949 - 1951. (And again, the one on the right was used on old Ford pick-ups).

The film was House of Bamboo, a noir drama about smugglers in Occupied Japan. The funky car is probably an early Toyopet or Datsun.
