Looks like a 49-51 "shoebox" Ford woody wagon or maybe its Mercury sibling.

Can someone identify these car badges? (at least I assume they are from cars). I don't have the answer so ....

Fake Opel on the right? :P
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,126
Mercury on the left? Dunno about the right one.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Looks like a Viking so I would have thought of some old Scandinavian brand. :D

I'm thinking those are wings on the helmet, but who knows?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,471
How big are these? They look very 30s to me. I don't know what they are from, but I think the Opel lightning bolt only has one slash (to look like a "Z"), so I don't think it's an Opel.

One on the left is about 4"; the right one is just a tad bigger. I got them 10 years ago at the same estate sale where I picked up my '49 Jeep Truck grill and my Nash hubcap.

Need to take a photo of my old chrome "jet" hood ornament sometime. I think it's from an Olds - never quite got around to screwing it to my minivan hood. I think it'd make a handy hook to tie my canoes off to. :shades:

Yep, it's a '49 Ford Custom. A spiffy exterior hides that utilitarian interior>

At that size, I am pretty sure they are prewar items. I think later caps were larger, But, I have no idea what cars they are from. The cogwheel-lightning one is an oddity, perhaps both are from defunct makes. I think Crosley had a lightning bolt in its logo. The AACA "what is it" forum does hubcap ID too.

When I was a kid I would always pick up odd hubcaps when out yard saleing with my mother. When I was in school she had a big sale and away they went.

That what I thought, too (Opel) but when I looked up their logo it only 'zigs' once, like Fin said. Earlier ones were entirely different. So... :confuse:

Thanks. Maybe I'll try to hunt down a emblem site.

My mom has downsized three times in the last ten years. Every time she does, one of us kids takes something to the thrift or dump that looked like junk to us, only to find out later that she meant to keep it or pass it down. Last year my brother threw away a 19th century basket that was worth $100+.

    Works both ways. :)

Right Stephen, it's a 1949 Triumph 2000. Apparently the rumble seat set-up was an option making it the last production car to feature a rumble seat or a double windshield.

I am pretty certain the one on the left is American, but the other one is odd. The cogwheel is something that doesn't ring a bell for me. Combined with the lightning bolt it gives me a German vibe, but the odds of an ancient Euro part turning up in NA is very slim,

My mother has never really downsized...and as a onetime antique dealer, she loves to collect things. She won't let anything go until she absolutely has to, or is departed, which likely/hopefullu will be some time from now, so she can accumulate even more things. I like to tease/threaten her with a line about how the house will make a great estate sale, everything's $1 :shades:

Triumph 2000----That's not an attractive car by any stretch, in real life.
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
The one on the right with the gear and "triple" lightning bolt was used by Ford. I will try to find more info.
  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165
The one on the right was used on old ford pick-up trucks. The ends of the lightning bolt should point Northeast - Southwest.

    Henry J in the background?

    >Henry J?

    I think it's too upright for a Henry J.

It doesn't even look like an American car

"I think it's too upright for a Henry J." I agree. To me it looks like an Austin, but then again it really is not clear enough or big enough on my monitor to tell. but I do like the '53 Mercury!!

I think you're right about the car in the background--my guess is an Austin A70 Hampshire or Hereford.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
53 Mercury Monterey is correct. I have no idea what the distant car is but it's not American.

That's the good angle, in a good (dark) color. I'm having problems with the c-pillar:

I always kind of liked that pale yellow on the old GM big cars.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Yeah, a friend of mine's mother had a 62 Caddy convertible in that yellow. I loved that car even though my friend didn't. It met a sad fate - his brother-in-law, who didn't appreciate what it was, drove it into the ground.

Cool car. Dad had a 72 Electra coupe.

I bet if I were rich and bought him one of those yellow convertibles it would bring tears to his eyes. In a good way. ;)
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
andre1969 has a 1967 Pontiac Catalina convertible in a similar color.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
What do you think that yellow one would be worth?

I'm sure that would depend a whole bunch on the condition, but I've always thought of picking up an old lead-sled big honkin' convertible as a project.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I know modern cars drive much better and are mostly better built. However, there is something about the big boat ride, room and flash that I'm not sure will ever come back. Not just the cars (and their trunks!) but the whole era of optimism and style that we had back in the 50's and 60's. The world has changed, some for the better and some for the worse, but I guess that is what happens with time. I'm glad I was able to experience it, but there are a lot of good things and improvements today from back then as well. Sometimes I think as a country we've grown too pessimistic. But back to cars, I think that 62 Caddy was probably a real looker Fezo, but probably was out before the white bucks and belts fad - just kidding!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,471
My thoughts exactly. Jag does have a tradition of big grilles, but this is just a little too big-mouth-bass to be coincidental. That with the greenhouse... Not a horrible looking car by any means though.
