Yep, a '75ish Monza notchback, GM came out with it to counter the notchback Mustang II.

Ah, the new BMW 3-series wagon. I feel the same as stickguy; it would decorate my garage just fine.

is it just me, or does that hood look oddly long?

edit: huh. Guess that's how the new 3 is in all iterations. I hadn't noticed before.

Seems like a current BMW trend - I can't get past it on the Z4, the hood just looks tooooo long:

The bizarre Citroen Ami 8, that one very similar looking to the one James May rallied on Top Gear:

I figured it had to be a 3 series wagon, though the nose from that angle did not look quite right. But I was surprised we were actually getting it here after all.

I'm surprised, too, given the new X3.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,464
wonder if this means the X1 is no longer even on the radar? Really seem redundant.

They seem redundant to me too but the X1 is due here this fall as a 2013 model.

Maybe they're smart, wagons (including SUVs, CUVs, SAVS etc) are more popular than ever.

Here's another one in Northern Liberties. This one appears to have been there a LONG time!

Top: 99-03 Lexus RX300 (the less offensive Toyota Harrier design before the model went all Faberge egg and trophy wife).

    Bottom: looks like a 65 T-Bird.

Must be a spare spare, since the spare lives under the hood.

    G'day

Citroen Ami 6 Break (Station Wagon). An odd looking (although the sedan is a whole lot stranger) small car with a 600cc flat 2 cylinder and suspension derived from the 2CV. I have seen a few tatty examples in France in the 1990's when they would have been 30+ years old.

The colour selections were a bit "different". One of the few occasions where a bit of chrome might have been a good idea

    Cheers

well, I'd guess '57 for the model year ... so how about the '56 show?

EDIT: well, after my guess, I checked your image source and see the real year. I was close at least.

    Ahhh...duh....Let me take a guess of... ~say~ .... 1964 ?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,469

    There's a giveaway somewhere, but I won't divulge... :shades:

So let's see. 300SL roadster is after very late 1957, chrome-laden ponton beside it should be 1957+, no fintails visible so likely before 1961, couple of XK150 also makes it 61 or before, so I would guess 1958-60.

Cute flock of Isetta back there too.

Now I remember :surprise: it was.......the 1958 show.

Even the Bentleys and the Panhard? :shades:

I noticed there's an MG-TD in the background too...maybe just a display of what people still expected from those durned new furrin cars.

I noticed there's an MG-TD in the background too...maybe just a display of what people still expected from those durned new furrin cars.

I think that might be a Singer Sports. What would a TD be doing at a '58 show? Isn't that an MGA just past the Citroen ID/DS?

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,469
Looks like an MGA yeah. I don't know if the traditional style car is a Singer though, was the Singer made that late either? Looks like it is near a Morris Minor, too.

Oh, and the Lloyd pickup is very cool.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Don't like the TDs...very clunky with the small wheels. The TF at least came up with a prettier, more graceful body style, so the 1500 TF is my fav of that T-type.

sure, I'd take the Bentleys from the 50s--they were still a decent car then. And I could win "best in class" with the Panhard in local shows, being the only one in the "French Cars of the 50s" division. :P
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,469
The Citroen beside it would be super cool too - looks like it is maybe black with a red or blue top. Early DS are hard to find.

I spot something very rare, too. Between the Volvo 444 and Duett kind of top right is something I am pretty sure is a Volvo P1900 - less than 100 were built.

These cars must have really been alien compared to what was on the road in the US then.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
At least the Volvo 444 looks something like a '48 Ford.

The 444's engine was not very good (crankshafts broke in half).
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,469
But easy later engine swap, right?
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Not too bad...you have to pull the entire engine/trans out and convert a few things, but the B18 engine is a lot better than the old B16 (5 bearings vs. 3).

Does anyone know the make/model of the microbus-equivalent next to the white Isetta? I can't place it.

The name "Tempo Rapid" is kind of a funny oxymoron.

Tempo-Werke made some weird yet cool vehicles:

No, all Tempos and Topaz were very slow. ;)

A friend's family had one of these 1960 Mercury's back when I was in school. It was a 4dr HT Station Wagon. If you think the outside styling was odd, the interior was weird too. The dash was extremely narrow and if you were in the front passenger seat it took some getting used to because it seemed an unnaturally far stretch from the seat to the dash. I always thought 1960 was like 1958, generally not a great year for automotive styling.
