The 60 Fords were a lot less hideous than most of the 1960s to come out of Detroit's Big Three. As a matter of fact they were better looking than the '59 Chevys they were patterned after. They just didn't look anything like the Fords that came before or after.
Europe was another story. American influences were taking hold as in the Fintails sometimes to good effect and sometimes the opposite.
There were a couple of Detroiters that stood out in a good way, the first generation of compacts were attractively styled and one GM division hit the bull's eye with their full-sizers..
1960 models are really oddballs, either still over the top like Mopars and most GMs, or a weird intermediary between the 50s and 60s (like the 60 Ford, or that Pontiac with a 60s looking front combined with late 50s sides). It's amazing how much almost everything modernized by 62.
I don't mind the DKW, as it is such a shameless T-Bird derivative.
The small white estate car in the far distance beyond the two[tone Ford Zodiac MkII is I think Standard Companion - although you may have had that as some sort of Triumph. Also, beyond the Volvos (and I think that is a 1900) is a Renault Dauphine and a 750. What really amazes me is the two Berkeleys just beyond the Jags... At least, I think they are - with those raised headlights they look different from the domestic ones. The DKW Munga, next to the Aston Martins is a bit of a contrast. That would be a great show to go to...
Been there, did that back in '66. That's a '57 Ford Sunliner at the center (I guess it could be a Skyliner but those were pretty rare) with a Blavk 50-ish Plymouth or Dodge behind it. I'll leave the rest for others.
Sacre Bleu You'd have the President of France in a German car! I think the DS5 Hybrid is tres belle.

I think they would have looked better if they had stuck closer to the original Joe Oros protoype. I learned to drive in a stripped 3 on the tree '60 Fairlane. Very low seating and bad rocker panel tinworm. But the 6 banger meant a manual choke and it would be one of the few cars out in the lot to start right up on those 20+ below zero Chicagoland winter nights.

A lot of the Mopars were over the top that year, but ironically I think the large Chrysler and DeSoto models came out as some of the better looking 1960 models. I'll admit though that I liked the original Valiant and thought the 60 Caddy was too toned down from the flamboyant '59!
It's amazing how much almost everything modernized by 62
Not only modernized, but very toned down (except for the downsized Plymouth and Dodge Polara).
I'll take the 49 or 50 Chevy fastback on the left. I always liked that roofline in both 2 and 4 dr models, but the more formal alternative was more popular. I think the fastback was only available in some of the lower price lines. Incidently, some of those ladies' swimsuits might have actually been considerd a bit risque for that time period - Funny!
Two-tone green and white 56 Ford Fairlane. Black 56 Ford Sunliner. 56 or 55 two-tone blue and white Ford. 52 or 53 Ford at waters edge. 49/50 black and white Ford in front of the yellow Chevy.
"that's a '57 Ford Sunliner at the center (I guess it could be a Skyliner but those were pretty rare) with a Blavk 50-ish Plymouth or Dodge behind it."
I'm pretty darn sure that black one behind the '57 Ford convertible is a '49 Mercury instead of a Mopar.
I don't see anything newer than the '57 either.
And I do remember this Daytona Beach scene from back in the 60's - stayed at a very inexpensive hotel called The Tower just across and down from the bandshell (there's a high-rise Marriott there now). Ah memories.....
Judging by the economic and industrial realities of the brave new world Europe, he should probably be in a S400 hybrid :shades: That being said, I do like the Citroen C6.
What's the yellow and black car beside the black 56 Ford, with people sitting on the hood? Maybe a 54-55 Olds?
I'm pretty darn sure that black one behind the '57 Ford convertible is a '49 Mercury instead of a Mopar.
I don't think so, the black car has the taller windshield and squared roofline characteristic of the '49-'52 MoPars. Mercs had shorter windshields and a distinctly rounded roofline.
At first I thought it some type of 'Ghostbusters' vehicle..but I guess it was just some improvised way of keeping the ash out of the carbs...
The white state patrol is not a Ford - it's a '78 Dodge - maybe Monaco? Behind it is a '78 Malibu (with the same jerry-rigged hoses). The last one looks like a '78 Ford LTD II, and the 3rd one looks kind of like a a '74-'75 Malibu.
The suction in the passenger compartment would draw air in through the escape valves normally used for venting the air through the trunk or rear door jambs and through the heater duct intake. I'm guessing the particulate would settle out mostly coming in that way. That keeps the air intake for the engine filter from getting dirty. Didn't they have a problem with the fine material stopping up the regular air intake filters quickly?
Yep, I was browing youtube and saw some videos about it, dawned on me I had some pics.
The hoses are for as imadizol describes - feed clean air into the engine, as the ash would clog the filters and carbs immediately. I remember seeing these images, and my dad explained to me what the hoses accomplished - pretty ingenious, I think. I spent much of my childhood in that part of the state - I am too young to remember the initial event, but my clear memories start a few years later, and I remember even then the ash was still a common sight, especially on country roads or just under the surface of a lawn. I remember I90 through the Columbia Basin was white on the shoulders from the ash, through the mid 80s. Areas from Yakima to Moses Lake received around 2-3" of ash, I think.
The big mopar is a Washington State Patrol car of course, the Malibu is city of Moses Lake police (we lived there), the end car is a 77-79 T-Bird Heritage model.

Does anyone see anything later than that '57? I'm thinking that must be about the vintage of the picture.

I think the yellow & black one IS a Buick, but a '55.
And nobody mentioned the 2-tone red&white '55 Mercury going North....
Doesn't look like a 1980 though so I'll guess it's a '79 Crown Vic.
That's a lot of ash.
I can't make the tail lights work for a '55. It looks like it has the two buttons per side of a 53 or 54. Good catch on the Merc.

I am a bit mystified. What are the hoses supposed to be doing, filtering inlet air or water circulation?
Cheers

My '82 Tercel got hit by a different ash cloud in '86 and ruined the windshield.
But, if you keep your HVAC on re-circulate, it's going to get awfully stale in there...
