I have had a few cars that I would have been ecstatic to hand over the wheel, with the only stipulation being that they had to promise to wreck it at the end to make sure I never got it back.

Wouldn't it be the Ford Fox platform

Well it terms of size, yes. My point was the sheer amount of vehicles built off one platform. I would assume Ford built more Panthers than Foxes.

One source on the net claims, 9.6 million! I couldn't find a total number of Foxes.

Yup, it's a 1988 Dodge Dynasty, a pretentious name for a totally undistinguished car.

I had one for a rental in Ft Lauderdale in 1988..

Wasn't the worst car in the fleet... the Mitsubishi V-6 was a decent powerplant...

'57 Buick Roadmaster. Great looking car, horrible transmission.
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
I wonder why Buick stayed with the Dynaflow transmission instead of using the much better Hydramatic used by other GM makes?

I remember, as a kid, being able to hear them coming for blocks.

At that time in GM, the different brands were encouraged to compete with each other and maintain a distinct profile.

Not sure if anyone id'd the Mercury on the sign, but it's a '67 Marquis. Also, the blue & white Buick is a '54, and the white one partially showing at the bottom is a '60 Chrysler.
  • wgraferwgrafer Member Posts: 592
I believe this is an (inappropriately named) Austin "America", probably a '69.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
    Yup, it's a '69 Austin America, essentially a BMC (Austin/Morris/MG) 1300 with an A/T.

I'll give it a shot. From left, late 40's Willys stationwagon, '51 Plymouth, '52 Mercury Monterey, '46 Ford. Nice.

No clue what it is, but I would bet that it is really, really really slow.

Well, it should be a Fiat 1100-103 but the RHD, British style AA badge and the odd (non UK) numberplate make me wonder if it is an Indian built one. This version was the earliest style of grille in the Italian model, and they used that from 1953-6, but I thought the Indian version got the later grille.

It is, it's a 1955 Fiat Millecento. With only 1100cc it was pretty slow but it wasn't driven that way. ;)

An Italian can do with 1100cc what it takes an American 7000cc to do--scare his passengers!

This looks like a Coda. A California-only electric car that uses a Mitsubishi platform. I have no idea if any of these have been sold yet, or if they are even in production.

    G'day

A bit of ferreting around suggests India somewhere. Apparently it is a 1954 model

Looks like an illustration from "where the wild things are"

Appears to be a Judge Reinhold Buick in the middle left, and a 65ish Chevy Impala middle right.

    Lots of Packards - 5 early '50s (2L front, 2L rear, 1R front) and (maybe) 2 late '50s (1L front 1R rear)

Did the Dynaflow have any redeeming qualities at all? IIRC, it was supposed to be a very smooth transmission, but that smoothness came at the cost of fuel economy and performance.

This page mentions that a '56 Century, with 255 hp, would hit 0-60 in 10.5 seconds. I don't know where they got that time from, but that sounds fairly respectable for the time. I thought it would be worse.

I am bemused. The grille on the car in the middle left says '60 Olds to me, but the front edge of the right fender is canted up like a '59 Buick. Probably bent by the cars on top of it, so I will stick with '60 Olds. I think the Chevy is a '66.

    >Dynaflow have any redeeming qualities

My dad had a 55 Special and I assume it had Dynaflow as the transmission. It did not shift. It was like it was one constant power surge. If I floored it it just sucked gas and moved. I believe that was the era when they said a saleman would put a ten dollar bill on the dash during a test drive and if you could reach it during the full throttle acceleration it was yours.

    G'day

It is a European market Opel Senator; not sure of the age as models ran from 1978 to 1994. I would guess about 1987 when the Senator B model was released. This one is a CD model which had a three litre engine and goodies like air conditioning, cruise control and heated seats.

In the UK they were sold as Vauxhall Senator. Practically, the Australian Commmodore is the same car, but has continued to be developed in Australia with a lengthy life still ahead.

When I first went to the UK in 1990, my boss had one. I recall driving it, which felt no different to driving an Australian Commodore; very pleasant for its time, especially on motorways.

    Cheers

I always thought those 55/56 Packards were nice looking. Loved the dashboard on them as well.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
They were "period-handsome", reflecting contemporary trends as used by Lincoln, Ford, Chrysler. They were, however, big floaty clumsy things...didn't handle like a Chrysler 300.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
That's right Graham, it's a 1988 Opel Senator CD, much nicer looking than it's American counter parts at Buick and Olds IMO.
