I once had 3 litres in a saloon in Germany. I don't remember how I got back to the barracks.

The long wheelbase version was called the Variant.

Funny thing was it still only got 2 doors.

Was in a Brasilia once when a kid threw a rock at us and the windshield shattered completely. Must've been a million little pieces of glass.

IIRC the VW Brasilia was a Beetle with a more modern body. They were all over Rio when I was there in '76.

from the source I got the picture from, the brasilia looks like a 412 but is actually based on a beetle chassis.

Yup, that is an ASA Mille . ASA (Autocontruzioni Societa por Azioni) was started by disaffected Ferrari employees who walked out on Enzo Ferrari after they had become fed up with IL Commendatore's imperious management style.

Among the departing rebels was Carlo Chiti who designed many of Ferrari's early race cars, Phil Hill, the reigning 1961 F1 World Champion and Giotto Bizzarrini the designer of the 250 GTO (and later the Bizzarrini Strada).

The ATS 4 cylinder was based on a four cylinder developed from the architecture of the Colombo V12 for use in a proposed "baby Ferrari". Because of this the ASA Mille was known as the Ferrarina .

A lot of the same people were involved in the development of the similarly-named ATS (Automobili Turismo e Sport) 2500 GT. ATS also built a Chiti-designed F1 car which was raced in 1963 by Hill and Baghetti.

Did they ever make a roadster? Gorgeous design...
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
Apparently they made a small handful of Fiberglass-bodied Spiders. This was the only picture I could find>

IIRC, Touring did the styling for both.

Hmm, sort of lost something in that transition. The coupe is more handsome.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
often the case with cars--the coupes outshine the convertibles in design.

    e.g.

    300SL

    Mini Cooper

    Saab 900

    Porsche 911

I'm sure we could all add to the list...

I love convertibles but I'd have to agree that the coupe versions almost always look better. There are notable exceptions where it comes down to a tie. I've never been able to decide whether I prefer the style of the E-Type Coupe or the Roadster, or the Ferrari 250 SWB Berlinetta vs the 250GT Spider California (I might give a small edge to the Spider.)

One area where the ragtops are generally the best looking IMO: Pony cars, Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, 'Cudas etc.

Rough shape, but it looks like a '63-'65 Dodge CrewCab. Can't be more specific on the year.

Ferrari 458 Italia - the coupe has the engine exposed, the car's best styling feature.

I'd make it uglier and paint in flat black, a huge loud exhaust straight out the back and a decal saying "I love fossil fuel" or "I'll run over your Prius"

You will never have any problem merging into traffic! :P

    G'day

I think that it is one of those Italian specialist shops using Fiat basic.

The grilles below the bumper suggest it is rear engined so maybe the donor car is a Fiat 850 Coupe. Certainly, the rear lights look they have come from an 850 Sport, as do the wheels.

    Cheers

Pretty much what Graham said; I believe it was known as an OTAS. I can't remember the brand name.

    G'day

From the grille, it is a BMW and looks Bertone, so I guess early '60s BMW 3200CS. Not a lot were made but it is the ancestor of the 6 series, It is a bit hard to see the Hofmeister kink at the base of the C Pillar, which probably has a BMW Roundel badge on it.

There are a whole lot of classy looking 2 door saloons from the early '60s from Italy, Britain and Germany, which all look similar, due to Bertone influence. Similar deal to the similarities of Fiats Peugeots and Austins designed by Pininfarina.

    Cheers

Before I forget, here's the First Drive link to that new Opel Adam that GM has aimed at the Mini Cooper in Europe.

It joins the Ferrari in having a car named after the company's founder.

It definitely is an Allard J2X from 1952, They were sort of a forerunner of the Shelby Cobra and Sunbeam Tiger, slotting big American engines into a British chassis with a gorgeous body.

For AUD320,000 I could have it for Christmas!

    Cheers

They certainly were. Shelby raced and won in a V8-powered Allard on more than one occasion.
