    It's a '53.

Kinda hard to tell from a '54 innit?

The '54 had a different grille, but not much different>

Thanks, I was guessing on the year. I don't really start knowing Mopars 'til '55.

    '55 DeSoto Fireflite.

I do like that two-tone green. I get tired of all '50's cars being red or yellow. ;)

Yup. Basic colors like black, white or tan were a lot more common than you'd think seeing the restored cars of today.

I like that DeSoto and a 55 Dodge as well for that matter.

...and Plymouths looked too stubby compared to the Ford and Chevrolet. My Grandpop had a plain-jane black 1953 Plymouth Cambridge way way back in the day.

Yeah, I think that's a fair assessment. I also preferred the 55/56 Dodge looks over the Plymouth, but lean toward Plymouth over Dodge for 57/59.

I disagree IMO the Fords were the best looking of the low-priced three then but the MoPars looked a lot better to me than the dowdy '53-'54 Chevies.

Personally, looks wise I'd go Ford from 49 - 54. In the mid 50's (55-57) they all looked nice though. Chevy hit it out of the park in 55, but that was as much about the new engine and chassis as looks to my way of thinking.

Datsun (possibly Nissan in some markets) 1200 ? early 60's.

It is striking how that truck resembles the near contemporary Austin Cambridge A55 which was also available as a pick-up. Nissan of course had a tie-up with Austin in the early days of their post-war recovery, so I suspect that isn't entirely accidental.

Not familiar with the BDM nomenclature but a few were sold in the USA as the 1965 Datsun NL230.

That's it. It's the 2014 Phaeton. I can't believe VW didn't learn from its previous mistake with this car. Isn't this supposed to be Audi's realm?

It's done OK in Europe. The are threatening to bring it back to America with this iteration. Hopefully it'll be priced more like an E class.

    G'day

Saw an article the other day saying VW lost GBP23,655 per car on the first Phaeton.mind you, that was a steal compared to the Veyron which is supposed to have lost GBP6m per car.

    Cheers

    Just call it a 'vette.

My friend had one like that, so I'll guess mid 80s, say 1984 model.

    aka Pontiac T1000, IIRC.

It's a little bit earlier. Best selling car in the US in 1979.

Ron Paul Auctions 1979 Chevrolet Chevette for FREE

"The highest tax-deductible pledge to the nonprofit foundation by October 15, 2013, will win the lime-green four-door compact, which Paul bought during his first term in Congress.

Although it's more than 30 years old, the Chevette has a mere 69,000 miles on the odometer.

It was Chevy's smallest and most economical vehicle at that time, EPA rated at 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway when equipped with the base 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine and manual transmission."

My friend took me to test drive a used one, similar to his, which had no power steering.

Come to think of it, it had no power, period.

    Thankfully I passed.

It's a 1964 Facel-Vega Facel II, probably the prettiest of all the F-V cars.

In 1958 Ringo was a real Nowhere Man who probably couldn't afford a used Wolseley let alone a Facel. The Facel II was probably his first "rich guy" car, at one point the Beatles all drove identical black Minis with heavily tinted windows.

Ringo's F-V goes to auction in December and is expected to bring millions. Power comes from a Chrysler 6.7 liter(383 CID) V8.

Ringo's wheels have something more than a Mopar 383. For 1964, a 6.7 Liter engine would have been Chrysler's 413. If this was a "Max Wedge" engine, it would really have been something special.

    G'day

VH model Valiant Charger RT with a 4 speed manual gearbox. It had a 4.3l 6-cylinder developed in Australia and marketed as a Hemi, although the head was only 35% of a hemisphere.

The 2 door Charger was absolutely beautiful and with a powerful 6 and four speed box was a delight to drive. My memory says it was a column change as there was a kit to change them to a floor change, but maybe that was the three speed.

Weird story which I have told somewhere else on these pages; in about 1976 I was driving down a desert road when one of these came toward us, headlights visible from many miles away, appearing and disappearing between the gentle dunes. When we were about half a mile apart, it veered across the road, collected the edge of a sand dune and flipped. There is something surreal about seeing a pair of headlights spinning in front of you. I was learning to drive at the time so was a bit disconcerted.

When we got there, we plucked a family from the car. They were from somewhere in the Middle East and recently arrived in Australia with little English. My father dredged his memory for some basic Arabic remembered from war time. There was enough to comfort them and calm things down.

With the aid of a couple of truck drivers we got the Charger rolled back on its wheels. A cough or two and some smoke where oil had seeped through the engine. No glass broken and only minor panel damage where it had skidded, upside down, on the sand. The family, after steadying their nerves, got back in and drove off! However before doing so, the father, immensely grateful, embraced Dad and gave him a kiss of gratitude; a bit different in 1970's Australia! I cannot remember Dad ever looking so embarrassed!

    Cheers

No, Australians were involved in a series of battles early in the second world war in the Eastern Mediterannean. Dad was in Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon. Apparently a markedly more civilised sort of war than his later service in New Guinea and The Pacific Islands.

    Cheers

I think a 413 cid in a Facel Vega would be lethal...to the driver. These cars are lovely, but rather foul-handling tanks. Nice in a straight line though.
