I believe I see a side molding on the '63 Pontiac in the photo, but the flanks of the '63 Bonneville were plain. There was only a side molding along about the first 1/3 of the side of the car, up front, on a Bonneville. Catalinas and Star Chiefs had a full-length molding smack down the middle of the side of the body.

It could be a side molding but it's just a bit higher than the middle, where it should be, so it might be just reflected sunlight.

Ah, a 1960 Falcon is a terrible thing to do to a young man....oh well, better than your friends seeing you ride a bicycle!

Must have been tough. The car my parents owned when I became old enough to be sentient was a '55 VW. It was followed (briefly) by a '58 Chevy, then a '60 Falcon (oh the humanity) and a '64 Rambler (which was the car they had when I became old enough to drive. At least it was a V-8. However, they still had the Falcon and it got fobbed off on me. Did I mention 'oh the humanity'?).

I don't think so andys, but we can agree to disagree. The Bonneville has the big, ugly "Bonneville" emblem high on the rear quarter, that looks like a space ship.

    Here's a Catalina:

On balance, yes. However, since the Falcon was an automatic, the bicycle would have been faster.

So it had the 144 cid 6? With the auto? Ewww...
At least my '65 Mustang had the 170 and a 4-speed. Lots of fun, going nowhere fast...

A '64 Rambler V8 isn't a real common car. Until mid-way through the '63 model year, they only offered a V8 at all in the Ambassador; not even in the Classic line. In '64 it was available in the Classic and Ambassador lines.

I'm pretty sure the 66 Chevy is a Caprice. I can't quite tell if the rear lights are segmented or have horizontal styling.

Caprices were actually pretty rare in 1966 but you might have something there. A '66 Impala should have each tailight segmented in three by vertical lines like this>

OTOH, the caprice t/ls were horizontally segemented>

I can just make out horizontal segments on the original b&w shot (the dividers on the Caprices t/ls are thinner and more subtle). It's definitely a Caprice, good eye!

I remember the 66 Caprice because one time I went car shopping with my dad when I was a teen. One car we looked at, briefly, was a 66 maroon Caprice with black vinyl top.
I think it was the 396 that really caught my attention. :p

That is a Caprice, and I believe a 'Custom Coupe' model by the shape of the rear window in the original photo.

If it had even had a 3-speed manual it would have been better. At that time the auto was a 2-speed Ford-o-matic. First was good for about 40 mph if you matted the accelerator, so up to that speed you could get it to downshift on a hill to keep it from slowing down. Above that speed you learned to enjoy the scenery. If it was a steep hill you wished for a good book.

Yes. And the Ambassador came with a larger V8 (327 vs 287 cid). I tried to get Dad into one of those, but he said that it was too expensive. Which means either that he really felt that way or that he didn't want to cut his 16 year old son loose in the more powerful car (or both). Oh well, since it had a 3-speed automatic it could outgun a 327 Chevy with Powerglide in a stoplight drag, at least up to the speed limit (at which I suddenly became a good citizen). I also had another trick; the Drive position on the shift quadrant had a superscript '1' on one side and a superscript '2' on the other (the latter was for slippery surface and started the car in second gear). Someone who was riding with me once asked why I kept it in the '1' position all the time, so I told him that '2' was high range and I didn't bother with it unless I was going to be running for a while at 60 or above. I subsequently employed that story with other selected occupants.

There was a girl in high school who had a drop-dead gorgeous maroon 1966 Chevrolet Caprice and she wrecked it! AAARRRGHHH!!! Same thing happened to another girl with a similarly nice gold 1969 Caprice!

Citroen Traction Avant, which was in production with few exterior detail changes in some form from 1934-1957. I guess one from that year might be a 15CV.

    G'day

For its day probably the most revolutionary car imaginable. A Citroen Traction Avante. First front wheel drive monocoque car and remained in production from about 1934 to 1958. I see one used as a daily driver fairly regularly.

    Cheers

I like those Traction Avantes. Here in the USA, a popular conversion was to put a Ford flathead V8 in them. Transmissions are delicate.

1965 Dodge Dart GT. And is that a brand-new Valiant, '67 or later, at the curb, with its Monroney sticker still showing?

That's a '65 Dart. The '66 had new front fenders with a more rounded wheel opening.

That's because it's a 1981 Toyota Starlet (JDM version). IIRC the Starlet was the last RWD Toyota subcompact sold in the US.

Toyota did sell the Corolla coupe in RWD trim in the early 80s as well, but I guess that was classified as a compact.

  • uplanderguyuplanderguy Member Posts: 16,905

That car reminds me of a childhood friend's parents' 1965 Wildcat Deluxe 4-door hardtop (different bodystyle). The fuel filler in back was the coolest thing...the round Buick emblem was hinged but pulled out completely towards you. I always remember that.

I saw a '64 Wildcat convertible at a car show a couple of years ago and it was just stunning!

    Yellow with black interior.

It had the 425 engine with 2 4bbls and a factory 4 speed. Every option they offered that year I believe.

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670

Yep, the big Buicks of the mid '60s had a mystique about them; they looked and drove great. I had occasion to drive a '62 Electra convertible and a '65 Wildcat 4 door ht.

    Very cool.

every time I drive my TL (a 2000) I am amazed by how low it is, particularly the trunk lid, and how large the glass area is. Feels like a real throwback. Even an Elantra towers over it.

but much nicer for backing up in a parking lot, without a backup cam. Changing lanes too is less of an adventure.
