I think that name came just a little bit later than this car.
  • tmarttmart Member Posts: 2,404

This car has a model name later used by Chevrolet:

This is a 52 Nash Rambler Greenbrier. They also used the Suburban name,

I like that Nash and the Studebaker...

We have the same thing here with extras on cars when restored. Wire wheels were not common on Jaguar Mk II except for the flat out racers, but now appear on basic 2.4 litres models. Hardly anyone had whitewall tyres in the 60s but they are more common now.

With regard to external spare wheels one car which did have them in the day was the Rover 2000 /3500 P6 - the boot on those was actually quite restricted because of the props for the DeDion suspension so Rover had a modification which was basically a panel you could bolt your spare wheel to on the boot lid - blocking most rearward vision - but presumably only intended for use when you were carrying luggage.

The other thing that gets me is how cars are restored for functions they never fulfilled when new. The Vauxhall Cresta from the late 50s and the Ford Zodiac/ Zephyr were bought new by people like bank managers and solicitors - but they are restored by people who want a British car to compare with something out of American Graffiti... all whitewalls and furry dice. They tend to look more Rock and Roll whereas when new cars they would be going to Rotary Club dinners...

And don't forget for every Ford Cortina 1200 there must have been 1000 Lotus Cortinas...

That seems backward since disc wheels are generally cheaper, lighter and stronger than wires. I looked up "Jaguar MKII racers" in Google Images and sure enough most did have wires ( a few had Minilite or Panasport alloys and none had disc wheels).

I really like the look of those Jaguar disc wheels on a sedan or roadster. I have this scale model>

It's a 67 GTX all right, but I don't know what's up with the outside sections of the grille.

This is not the first example I've seen of owners' doing this.
What are showing are the backsides of the headlight bezels.
Remove bezels. Swap left to right, right to left. Install inside out.

How dumb is this, I stumbled across the identity of that little car while perusing Replicarz.com. It's a Kleinschnittger T1 powered by a 125cc 2-stoker

No, it's a real car and over 1,100 were produced. It was part of the micro-car phenomenon that occurred during the post WW II period when Europe was hard up for any kind of automobile production. (e.g. Goggomobile, Isetta, Biscuter) , I twas made from 1956 to 1961.

The country of origin might throw you though.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,543
Biscuter is kind of a clue, too. I thought that little thing might be Germans having a sense of humor, but I looked into it - not this time.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,674
Oh I know it was a "real car" but the Replicarz miniature tipped me as to what it was.

This should be easier - saw this on TV last night, still amusing:

Can't get it to enlarge, but I'll guess maybe a 54 Lincoln or Mercury.

Ah, one of the best behind the scenes movie stories.
A 1953 Mercury Monterey was used throughout the film, however, it had trouble pulling the trailer up hills. So, they painted over the side chrome of the 1953 Lincoln Capri shown, added a Monterey side strip above it, and put a hood from a Monterey onto the Lincoln. Great story.

Good story but kinda pointless unless they'd already shot scenes using the Merc. Maybe it was cheaper to disguise the Lincoln than reshoot the scenes. They used a lot of cars in IAMMMMW.

Yep, that's it. I remember watching the movie when I was a kid, and thinking something wasn't right. And that poor car still seemed abused pulling the behemoth up those hills. I guess the 239 (?) in the Mercury wouldn't cut it. Nice looking car though, and something rarely seen anymore.

Ricky also trades in a blue 39 Ford convertible for the Mercury, that'd be worth a pretty penny today.

Prewar style but postwar MB 170 S or V or DS, W191
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,674
Yup, the precursor to the Ponton was the W191. That's a Mercedes-Benz 170Sc. early 1950s.

The little red & white microcar hails from Barcelona Spain and is a PTV - I think it is a 250 but there are so many different microcars so I can't be sure.

Spain had a lot of microcars in the 50s because it was poor after the civil war and its currency was weak so it couldn't import much fuel...
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Yes, a 250cc with aluminum pistons and head, independent front suspensionand weatherproofing made this a "real" car. It was eventually driven off the market by the famous Fiat 600.

I'm stuffed, so I'll take an easy one - 57 Olds. Not as easy from my monitor at least, maybe a 59 Plymouth wagon behind it and a 61 Pontiac Catalina in the back row to the right.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,543
Some odd stuff there. Newest car a 61?

3rd car from right, rear row, looks like an Imperial limo. Must have been quite rare then, and extremely rare today.

Several cars to the left, there's a person standing by what looks like a Lark convertible. Towards the end of that row several cars to the left is a white 60 Cadillac convertible. To its right is a smaller black car with wide whites, almost reminds me of a fintail, but probably isn't. Rambler or foreign car?

I think the oldest cars are two GMs from the late 40s/ early 50s, either Pontiacs or Chevys. One is next to the '57 Olds (brown roof/ white body), the other with a dark brown roof /tan
body on the extreme left halfway to top. In the very topmost row next to the white car (Volvo PV544?) you can see what might be a MoPar from that era (or possibly even older).
It's a dull tan finish. Boy were browns and tans popular in that location (California?)

That's Lamborghini's first car, the 350GT with a small V-12 and aluminum body (most of them), circa 1964. A nice one today should run you about $750,000. And odd-looking duck, you'd really have to want one.

I fit quite well in the '85 I had. Only adjustment I had to make was to remove the headrest when I had a helmet on.

    It was the legroom mostly.

I'm 6'5" with 36" inseam. Legroom was remarkably good.

I had witnessed various engine transplants in the MR2. The turbo'd Camry V6 was probably the most radical I saw in person. The driver could not keep that rearend in check. I figured a nice 200hp blown 4-cyl would be ideal.
