Does anyone actually use their rear defogger and does it come in handy? I really could use some feedback on this. Thanks

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    I thought I wouldn't.

But an ex.cab seems to get fogged more than a reg cab?

    I don't have to have it...but it's there.

Would rather have a slider though...

I ordered 12/31/99 - tpw of 2/14/00 - build 2/17/00 - shipped 2/17/00...I stopped by the dealer last night to see if what I ordered was being shipped. All is good but the rear slider, I ordered it but the truck was not build with it. My dealer informed me that GM is not accepting the rear slider on orders 'till the end of the year. I should be close now, can't wait!!!

Aluminum ain't just for beer cans anymore. It's the preferred material for heavy duty truck heads on 2001 GM 2500HD and 3500 dualie.

The mind is a terrible thing to fake! LOL! Grrrr!

I used mine this morning, along with the mirror defogger, which I think is must have option.

I would rather have my 300 hp 6.0 with the cast-iron heads than go to aluminum heads. You only get 25 more horsepower with the aluminum. Just my opinion though.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
The aluminum heads dissapate heat faster, and may allow more ignition advance and better fuel economy.

There has to be some reason the 5.3s can get 18-20mpg but the 6.0s get 12-13mpg. It is not just weight, there is only 800lbs difference.

When I load my truck with 1500lbs (and more air drag) I lose about 6-7mpg. The rest of the loss with the 6.0 may due to the iron heads.

Ok has anyone ordered a truck and had the dealer put on a spray on bedliner, different tires, nerf bars when the truck came in? Is there an agreement i should sign or make something out saying exactly what i want? As of now i am going to have the dealer send out the truck to have a spray in liner and nerf bars put on. Tires are questionable. Any advice would help me out alot thanks

For anything like this, call around to check aftermarket prices for those items. Also make sure that these items will not affect the warranty at all (in writing). If the dealer can get you a better price, then go for it.

As for the tires, do the exact same thing. Make sure for everything, you get what you want. If they add options you don't want, you don't have to pay for them (of course, they don't have to sell the truck to you, either).

    Greg,
Thanks for the tip on Bob Blackmon. Spoke with him today, but unfortunately, he's no better off on 3/4 ton allocations than Mac Haik. He recommended I stay put with Haik (knows them to be good folks). I'm 3rd on the list at Haik and would about 10th on Mike Hall's list if I switched.

Talked to Landmark Chevy also and no better luck there. All of them said last week's total production of 3/4 tons was 225 vehicles. That's not many to go around between 4800 dealers nationwide.

BTW, Haik's price was also $200 over invoice.

Finally, congrats on the long-awaited delivery of your truck!! Bob told me you were coming in tonight to pick it up. Let us know how it works out.

why would you want the dealer to put them on???

Chances are they will only sell the GM junk that is way overpriced.

Buy them aftermarket and put them on yourself....or drive here and I'll do it for a fee....12Oz. at a time!

Finally! Truck was built on the 21st. It is currently at the testing center/department. They said 3-10 days for that! Then on to transportation for 1-3 weeks!! Chevrolet is absolutely trying give me a stress induced heartattack. It took forever just to get those bits of information. I fought with customer service for all of it. IDIOTS!

I had to step down from WOL tires to blackwalls so my order would be accepted by Chevrolet. Now I want to know what brand tire was put on my truck so I can make arrangements with a tire store to swap them. Again customer service (IDIOTS) are clueless. They say they have no way of finding out. I don't think I am asking too much. Simply call the closest IDIOT (testing center at them moment) to my truck, have them walk over to the truck and look.

Okay, I feel somewhat better now.....

I have seen several bug guards that do not have any manufacturer or logo markings on them. Could these be the ones from GM? I have seen GTO, bugflector II, EGR, and Lund. I kinda like the GTO, but I saw a 99 Silverado with one broken half off! Wonder what happened. No apparent damage to the truck. The no-name had the same basic shape as the GTO.

Also, what is dealer cost for the Chevy drop-in bedliner? Anybody know?
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    a step down from WOL??

Raised white's were cool in high school oh so many years ago...but black wall is where it's at for the past decade or more...
Maybe get some Cragar S/S's also??..(remember those?)
    LOL

    Quad,

Do trucks with the bucket seats and console have it?
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
Yes, all Silverados have the passenger compartment air filter. Many new cars have it now.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Factoid: the dealer told me the govt is pressuring manufacturers to put in an oil change indicator to reduce oil consumption and disposal because too many people change their oil earlier than really needed. This is why GM put it in the trucks.

It's a believable story, except for the source.

Help me here to understand why a sane person would "rough up" perfectly good paint to spray on colored cottage cheese. Face it, most of the people owning trucks only occasionally haul "stuff" (like me). Stuff being: 2-3 loads of dirt or rock, bikes, lumber, appliances and such I buy, moving a friend, etc. After that type of use I have some scratches here and there but for the most part it still looks pretty darn good. Now I do have a bed mat which I bought not for the protection, but to keep things from moving around. If it gets so scratched up and looking that bad (5-6 yrs from now) maybe then I'd consider a spray on, but I still think spray on cottage cheese does not look better than paint. It's just a fad.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
No a big reason is because when it gets scratched and water (rain snow) and air hits it what happens??? IT RUSTS. The liner helps protect against rust it doesnt let water get trapped under the liner like drop ins. This is the only major reason i am getting the spray in. I see all kind of trucks with no liners scratched and rusting that come up to where i work (i seriously almost went through one guys bed (a FORD) while loading shingles the bed was rusting so bad and it was a early 90's model and no im not fat but around the wheel well was almost rusted through) I See all kind of liners , None, spray in, drop in, bed rug, mats, and they all serve their purpose well they all have their own upsides and downsides i guess you pick one for the best reason whether it be styling, purpose, price, or preference.

Anybody know if all of the 2001 6.0's will have AL heads?

Might start getting in line for a 2001 4x4 extended cab, long bed 3/4 ton stripper.....
  • twevertstweverts Member Posts: 24
    rbrick,
I got my dealer here in NC to throw one in at cost back in August. It was $140 and there was no installation fees. Heck, if they want money to install it, tell them no and do it yourself. Its not that big of a deal to install especially if you have a friend helping. You might need a screwdriver for the tailgate portion though.
    Good Luck,
    Tony

Truck Trend says the 6.0L will be the base engine for the 2500 Heavy Duty, and 3500 dualie. The base engine will be 325 hp, and have AL heads.

I know no more, no less.

(Sure you don't want that 8.0L, or Duramax diesel?)
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
are nothing but a disco trend...and when the trend is over...You won't be able to take it out.

A trend that offers no protection from Dents and comes off way too easy. Course anyone caught in a trend like that one...probably doesn't haul anyway..at least nothing of any weight.

Sorry Ryan my man...but Drop-ins are the only choice for real protection. I've had them for years and have never had the "rust under" problem you seem to be scared of..

I got a delivery date for my 4dr extended cab
1500 (4wd). I ordered the sliding rear window
but my dealer says the truck is not coming that
way and it is no longer an option. Does anyone
know why and has anyone added an aftermarket
slider to their truck. The truck is supposed to
    be in 2/28/00

    Thanks,

I was reading in MotorTrend yesterday and it said that in the 2001 model year 3/4 and 1 ton trucks there will be an optional 5 speed Allison auto tranny. If this is true, this will be one smokin' setup. I might just have to put my name on the list!

I have a 92 S-10 with cap. In the back end right by the tailgate under the drop in there is a little bit of rust that is starting you can see the bubbling up. It is also easy to dent the truck with a drop in trust me i do know done it many time seen it happen many times.
Disco fad? Alot of people are still in that it seems to never wear off.

OK ENOUGH GET WHATCHA WANT WHO CARES!!!!!! LETS PLEAAAAAAAAASSSSSSEEEE MOVE ON this is so old about as old as disco.

Has anyone heard of any 2000 Silverado 2500 standard transmission problems? I was getting the
the wind noise from the right rear window (extended cab) fixed which would occur at 70 MPH, when the window guy was road testing it, he heard a whine or whistle from the tranny in 5th that started at 70. So I took it in last Wednesday to be looked at, and now I won't see it till next Tuesday. It seems 5th gear had some problem which requires the acquisition of various parts to repair it. Other than a factory defect the only thing I can think of that may have affected it is going over the 97.5 MPH top speed limiter a few times. I would appreciate any responses from anyone having heard of similar Silverado problems.
  • dropperdropper Member Posts: 47
I think anyone here would be hard pressed to say that there is any difference in the tires, other than the white lettering. My truck had the WOL tires and I refused to pay for tires that just had the lettering mounted outward instead on inward.

If there is a difference, I would sure like to here about it. Anyway, these are $60 tires, at best (they only have to last 36,000).

I do like the look of the WOL, but I don't think anyone should pay for it.

    Keith
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Good point if they are the same why the price difference $365 WOL and $240 Black? Thats $125 wow big difference. Im gonna check out some trucks w/the blackwalls first havent seen many and the i am gonna ask the salesman the difference who knows maybe i will get a flat tire and get to go back to the tire guy talked to him about goodyears last time i was there a few wks ago. Why am i so picky about the damn tires????? Thats like the only thing bugging me about the whole darn truck.

    Ryan
  • rbrickrbrick Member Posts: 32
Timmy you're such a kidder. Black walls are a step down price wise.....I just like the WOL. No offense intended. I agree that blackwalls have been the fad for a while now. I had bw's on my '87 IROC.

Ryan- I don't believe the BW tires have any white lettering on them. I hope there not just turned inside. There should be no performance difference...unless you get a different brand of tire. I asked customer service about this and they said that my truck will have Firestone, Goodyear or General tires. If you price these tires on the web there is about a $75 or so difference between Firestone/Goodyear and General. I initially thought it would be Firestone so I called a local dealer, explained that I wanted to swap for WOL and he agreed to swap with me for $85 (diff in price). Cheaper than option price. Maybe I shoulda started with the 245's.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I believe you...but don't try to be my Guide. I was driving while you were in Kindergarten. I know what does and doesn't happen. And dents Do not happen in the trucks I have had.
Quite a few S-10's are little rust buckets to begin with. Has nothing to do with a liner.

If you want to cruise down the road with Saturday Night Fever and the Grease soundtrack playing....and your spray in...go for it!

    Ok..let's move on....we can talk about......hmmmmm.
    How about Flares!!??
    You know anything about those??
    LOL

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Rust bucket? Yea right damn truck still looks great and runs great too. It is now 8 yrs old my dad bought it new 8 yrs ago around this time good work truck. Gets me where i want to go and its pretty darn quick. The rust in the bed is from me spraying a little bit of water in the back to clean out dirt and it didnt dry. WHO GIVES A CRAP NOW THE BEDLINER ISSUE IS DEAD.

I wont be driving listening to grease that was way before my time maybe ill throw in some foo fighters some kid rock and maybe a lil tim mcgraw. Oh cant forget the limp either (Limp bizkit tim ever hear of em? haha)

Flares hmmm what are those? Can i get em with my truck? What colors do they come in??? (sarcasm)

The reason no one is getting sliders is that GM tried to get a better price than their regular providers for sliding windows. It didn't pan out and when they went back to the 1st company they sold elsewhere. No more sliders until 2001 models.
I'm just starting to research for a slider. J C Whitney has some at around $60 to $70.

I'm not sure but it seems to me that others like to pick on you in this topic? I'm not sure what the reason is (I only found this site a few weeks ago) but you seem to be the whipping boy? Have you annoyed anyone in the past???

p.s. I know that the bedliner topic is old but I would rather have the bedliner! Just my two cents!!!

???I probably have annoyed tons of people with talking about when i am ordering a truck oh yea by the way 2 wks from tomorrow i am ordering my truck!!!!!! They pick on me cause of my age. I am only 20 yrs old and am going to be buying a truck and i like to talk about it and it drives people crazy. I dont take it that way though its all in good humor and fun.

Let me be the first to congratulate you on your pending purchase! This is my first brand new vehicle (my brother & i, finally wore down my wife & she agreed to us getting a new truck!). My wife wanted a minivan at first, well I put a stop to that ASAP! My brother bought his truck last year (he's 25) & I will be 28 this year. I could have never afforded a new vehicle at your age!
    rcoos

p.s. You asked about the defogger before in a earlier post? My brothers truck came with it (regular cab 4WD LS shortbox). At first he thought the sliding window would be better. Since he works part time in Alaska he really likes having the heated mirrors & window.

I looked again and cannot find it. It says in the owners manual its in selected models. Has anyone with bucket seat option found and replaced the inside air cleaner? The console seems to be in the way of where the picture shows.
  • 26andrew126andrew1 Member Posts: 93
the air cleaner is NOT in all trucks. if you look down by the heater box just to the right of the tunnel there will be a sticker saying the air cleaner is there. If no sticker no air cleaner.
    amen...

Power Slider is the only way to go on extended can trucks. Besides being usable (just TRY to open or close a manual slider while driving), it also gives a nice look with fewer things in the way (no lock to see, etc.).

Standard air filtration system is listed in my literature for all models. (Page 43 of the '99 catalog).

Does anyone ever use the tow/haul mode on the automatic? When I use mine I noticed that it doesn't really have any engine braking in around-town speeds; the tach goes back to idle while coasting. The service rep says that is normal (says his does it too). Regular mode works normal.
