Audi A4 Lease Questions

I am looking to sell my leased BMW 330i to a private buyer.
Can someone explain how this whole process will work?
What taxes am I liable for, who does the title get mailed to, etc.
I know that CA law allows for some type of grace period, but I don't know any specifics on this.
My payoff is $24,408 and the buyer is paying me $26,500.
If I get hit with CA taxes, it comes to $1,891 which basically makes it pointless to do. If I am NOT liable for taxes, then I need to jump on it and get the whole thing done and over with ASAP while the buyer is interested.
Also, my lease is up in 6 weeks, so I need to get on the move.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.

A selling price of $32,967 is $26 UNDER invoice for that model with those options, so from that standpoint it's an excellent offer.
Two questions:
1. Do you mean really mean $1500 down (as in, down payment toward the negotiated price of the car), or do you mean $1500 drive-off?
2. Does the $434.50 include tax?
If you're talking about $1500 total out of pocket to drive off and the $434.50 includes tax then you couldn't have done much better on the deal in my opinion.
Did you forget to list the sport suspension option? I'm showing a $250 difference between our pricing only the sport suspension and tire monitoring options have an MSRP of $250.
BASE $31,540
Destination $ 720
Sunroof Pkg $ 1,400
S-Line Pkg $ 3,000
Tech Pkg $ 1,775
Total $38,435
Using just the info you provided you pre-tax monthly would be just a shade under $500. Of course, this is assuming no negotiating on the cap cost, zero down payment, and no other fees rolled into the pricipal.
You'll need to negotiate the selling price of the car before you do anything. It will make all the difference in the world.
For instance, if you negotiate a price that's $500 over invoice your pre-tax monthly would drop nearly $70/month.
There's a lot that doesn't make sense to me with that deal.
Primarily:
1. The negotiated price was $1,388 BELOW invoice??? That seems unlikely to me.
2. I'm showing Audi's money factor as .00043 (1.03%) this month on the Quattro. Your stated MF of .0034 (8.16%) is way out of line ... and neither figure gets remotely close to $425/mo payments.
Based on your numbers I'm showing the following monthlies (incl. tax)...
MF of .00043 = $355
MF of .0034 = $520
There's definitely something wrong with your scenario, and I'm guessing it's the negotiated price and the listed MF.
The advertised lease program for the Quattro is $369/mo (pre-tax) with $999 down (+ other out-of-pocket expenses)
$349 is the deal being advertised for the FWD model.
Both of those prices were based on cars that had automatic and sunroof package ... no other options and no metallic paint.
Based on your numbers above, with $999 cap reduction, 36 months and 12,000 miles per year, I'm showing your pre-tax monthly payments around $350 ... assuming no other fees being rolled into the principal.
If the dealer is rolling $500 worth of Advertising and Prep fees into the lease then your pre-tax amount goes up by about $15 and I could see a $399 monthly payment (tax incl.) being likely.
It wouldn't be a bad deal at all, but you could probably do a little better on the negotiated price and/or the dealer fees (if any).... depending on your area of course.
The first thing that jumps out is that you could do much better on the negotiated cap cost of the car. In LA you should be able to get the car for around 30k easily. I just got mine last weekend for $100 over invoice... plus, I got the $500 in typical dealer fees (National Advertising and Prep Handling fees) waived as well.
Another thing that stands out is the down payment. As CarMan mentions all the time, putting money down on a lease is a bad idea. If the car is stolen or totaled you lose the entire down payment. Gap insurance will only pay for what is still owed on the car ... not what you've previously put into it.
If you can get $1000 knocked off the price of the car up front you could then save that much money on your down payment.
The money factor from Audi this month is .00038 (0.91%).
Based on the numbers you provided, I'm showing your monthly payments at about $405 for 15,000 miles and about $385 for 12,000 miles.
Like I said though, negotiate the cap cost down and you could save yourself a bunch of money when it's time to write that drive-off check.
Are you talking about a FWD model or Quattro?
The money factor is way wrong. Audi's program this month is featuring a money factor of .00038 for the FWD and .00043 for the Quattro.
What is "4 D"?
Do you mean 34,160 invoice, or MSRP?
Are you talking about the 5-spoke 17" wheels that come as part of the premium pkg, or the optional 16-spoke 17" wheels?
The 1691.48 "down" that includes the first payment... does any of that actually include a cap cost reduction, or is it all just drive-off fees?

Premium, 17in, MoonRoof, and heated front seats.
MSRP 32760
Invoice 30222
Price: 30900
Following is the info you requested:
36/10k lease (stock # A9224)
$999 due at signing
$399/ month plus tax
Residual value = 56% ($18037.60)
Money Factor = .0006%
Alternatively:
$1500 due at signing = $389/ month + tax $2500 due at signing = $362/ month + tax
I still think these numbers do not make sense. He said the Quattro has better residual, so that's why it has a lower payment. Of course, the only one they have also has the S-line package and that takes it to $37700.00
Thank you for your response. I thought that the S-Line package included the sport suspension (at least Edmunds shows that as part of the package).
What kind of costs do dealers try to roll into the principal? I have read about advertising costs, etc. that may be negotiated out. In other words, what are legitamate costs, and what are unnecessary dealer extras?
I've heard of other assorted "administrative" fees being attached at different dealerships around the country too.
Whether they are "legitimate costs" is a matter of opinion. The dealers will certainly tell you they are legit.
I think those costs exist to make everyone feel good about the deal. The buyer can brag to his friends that he got the car for $100 UNDER invoice, while paying those fees so the dealer can still make their target profit margin. With invoice prices being so publically available nowadays, the dealer finds it more diffult to make their money on the sticker price.
Car_man is extremely helpful and he's a hell of a guy for giving time to the cause, but he seems to have gotten busier and busier over the years. I just thought I'd try to chip in and give a little something back to the forum that has helped me so much over the years.
Anyway, I'm still having trouble deciphering your deal. The options you listed don't really add up to the MSRP and Invoice prices you posted.
The money factor is just flat-out wrong. Either your salesman is a moron or there was some miscommunication between the two of you. With a money factor of .45 you'd be paying about $22,000 a month in finance charges. :surprise:
Another oddity is that you are showing a quoted monthly payment for 12,000 miles, but the 53% residual is actually for the 15,000 mile plan. Either they are cheating you big time on the residual (it should be 55% for 12k) or, again, there was some miscommunication going on.
I'm going to have to make a lot of assumptions here...
* Going on just the invoice and MSRP you gave me
* Assuming you want 12k miles (55% residual)
* Assuming the correct MF of .00038 (.91%) is being used
* Assuming you put 0 down as a cap reduction
A payment of $426.15 looks to be correct if you are getting the car for a net cap cost of $32,550 (which would be $650 over the invoice price you provided). That's actually a very good deal in most areas.
Bottom line, the monthly payment being quoted to you looks to be in line with the price of the car and a zero-down drive off scenario.
A negotiated cost of $30,900 for 36 months and 10k miles, with $999 cap reduction should run you $341/mo + tax.
I don't know how they're coming up with $399/mo + tax, unless they are rolling all of your typical drive-off fees into the cost of the car.
When you leave the dealership, how much will you have to write the actual check for? Just the $999? ... Or are you also paying the license, acquisition fee, first month payment and any additional dealer fees up front too?
If you're only paying $999 then they must be rolling the other charges into the lease -- and those other charges typically add up to $1300-1800.
If they're rolling everything into the lease then $399 + tax makes sense.
The first thing I would do is remeind them that Audi's money factor is .00038 until the end of the month and save yourself $10/mo.
The Quattro does have a better residual value (by 1% across the board) but the MF is actually a tad higher, and the base price of the car more than offsets any advantage from the residuals.
A similarly equipped Quattro can not be cheaper than the FWD -- all negotiating being equal of course.
A4 2.0T Quattro w/Tiptronic
Moonroof + Leather interior

MSRP - $35,285
Negotiated Price - $32,300

Down - $600
Residual - 56%
MF - 0.00043
36 month lease
12k miles
7.75% tax
Monthly - $425
So....with those numbers, how is it looking?
Your negotiated price is $488 BELOW invoice, which is great.
The residual and MF are both where they're supposed to be.
The $1,400 fees are typical:
What's not making sense is when I plug all that in I get a monthly payment of $382.73 (incl. 7.75% tax)
Is the dealer figuring the payments based on rolling all of your fees into the cost of the car? If I add $1,400 to the cost of the car it comes out to $425.
If that is what's happening (writing a drive-off check for $600 and nothing more, with $425 payments) then you got an awesome deal.
Personally, I'd rather pay the fees up front rather than pay interest on them over the life of the lease though, but that's up to you.
You are correct. I pay $999.00 and drive off with the car. Payment is $399+ tax. They say they are only adding a $399.00 dealer fee and $575 lease acquisition fee. So I guess that makes the actual price of the car $31874.00.
36/10k lease (stock # A9224)
$999 due at signing (Drive off payment)
$399/ month plus tax
Residual value = 56% ($18037.60)
Money Factor = .0006%
I've asked them to do $399/month including taxes and $1000 due at sign in.
I've been using the Car Lease Calculator at leaseguide.com (HERE) to try to figure out the dealer's math on my own - all of this took place over the phone and e-mail and I only know definite numbers in the entire equation. The rest I have tried to assume on my own in order to make the calculation come out correctly with the calculator.
When I asked for the math on the car, here was the dealer's only reply:
Base Monthly Payment $394.81
Sales Tax $ 30.60
---------
$425.40
First monthly payment $425.40
Tax on fees $3.49
Security deposit Waived
Registration Fees $284.00
Doc Fee $45.00
Bank Fee $628.31
Total $1386.20
Cap Reduction $613.81
Total due at signing $2000.00
I'm suddenly feeling like they are using fuzzy math and I'm selling myself short on the deal I could possibly have.

There is so much going on in your lease (incomplete/unclear list of options, fees being rolled back into the cost of the car, uncertain allocation of drive-off payment, questionable price padding by the dealer, etc) that I'm having difficulty analyzing it properly.
At this point I'd have to see the paperwork to know exactly how they've structured things and to know whether you got a good deal or not.
My feeling, given the info you've provided, is that $399 is probably a decent deal, but as long as they insist on charging above the standard MF rate I'll remain skeptical. If the dealership is looking to pad their profit there, I'm sure their looking for other ways as well.
When it comes to any contract transaction -- particularly an automotive lease -- I prefer to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible.
I believe that all standard fees (license, taxes, 1st mo. pmt, acquisition fee, sec dep, dealer fees, etc) should be paid up front for two very big reasons.
1. it keeps things simplified, reducing the number of opportunities a dealer has to sneak hidden costs into the deal.
2. You don't want to pay interest on those things for the next 3 years.
According to you last note, the dealer is over-charging on the MF (.00043 instead of .00038) and I see that they are overcharging on the "bank fee" as well (the standard acquisition fee is $575)
Aside from that, I plugged in all the numbers as you provided and I'm getting an estimated payment of $355 + $27.50 for a total monthly payment of $382.50.
The only way I can approximate their monthly payments is if I add $1400 back into the cost of the car. Meaning the negotiated cost of the car is actually $33,700, not $32,300 --- which is about $900 over invoice.
At a negotiated cost of $33,700 I come up with a monthly payment of $424.90 and drive off fees of $2000 (which includes the $613.81 cap reduction)
We'll have to wait for car_man to fill us in when June 1 arrives.
My lease on my audi a4 ends 8/1 and the car in in near perfect condition, with very low milage, except for the left front fender that is dented. I've received an estimate from a body shop for 1600; my insurance deductible is 1000 so i'd end up paying 600 if i have it fixed now.
My question is whether I should have it inspected (my end of lease inspection) first to see if it is cheaper to just turn it in. My guess is that there is no way that it will be cheaper to just turn in, but I would like any thoughts. Thank you.
I'm new at this and need your help on my first independent lease from my parents. I am looking at the A4 and I know there is a current promotion for 36 mo. for $349 a month but with all the hidden fees in advertised lease deals, I wasn't sure if it was a good one.
I'm looking to do a 24 or 36 mo. lease on an Audi A4 2.0 CVT with automatic transmission. I do not need any other upgraded options (I assume that all Audi cars come with leather). I'd like to put as little down as possible up front- no more than $1000 (including fees) and I'd like the standard 12K miles per year.
What do you think is the lowest monthly payment I could make per month without putting more than $1000 or $1500 down? Also, what are the current MF and and residuals for CA (I live in Los Angeles)?
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Ashley
My monthly payments are just under 360/month including tax, better than the 349 advertised price which does not include tax. These payments reflect additional options not included in the advertised lease special (sunroof package).
The car I leased had the sunroof package, wood trim, sport suspension, and power rear sunshade.
The deal took place over just two days through email and the phone, and then I went in to sign papers and drive home the car. It was very painless and straightforward. I'd highly recommend the dealership I went to. If you have specific questions you can email me.
Current MF is .00038 and residuals for 12K is 56%.
Thanks,
Evan

From what I'm reading here the negotiated price looks pretty high and the money factor is also high. They seem to have cars in stock. From what I understand in NY it's difficult or impossible to get the sales tax back if you pay it up front and for aome reason terminate the lease early. Does Audi have a lease termination fee like VW has? I'd appreciate any help you can give me.
Can you please tell me how bad I got my head ripped off here? The deal is done, I'm simply looking to find out where I got gaffed over the head and missed it. Thanks!
