I just bought a 2006 Pontiac G6 GTP Hardtop Convertible.
    I love it.
I think it is a great car for $30K.

Just wanted to let you know what finally happenned with my top problem. Took it to the dealer, it took them a week to fix the car because they couldn't get the parts. Told me the suppliers didn't have the parts yet, so they had to wait for them to come off the assembly line and didn't know when they would be available. Well, after 5 days I told my salesman to either give me a new car or get the part off from one of the cars on their lot. So he had the GM rep come in and they took the parts off a brand new car on the lot. I got it back and it works even better than it did when I first got it. So I hope the problem is resolved. They ended up replacing a couple of sensors on the left side of the trunk. I have to say that I do get a lot of compliments on the car and I do love it when it works. It's a nice little sporty car at a reasonable price...

said that this car is less stiff than the other G6's, and that it can flex on the Hyway. They said its a cruiser. Do you guys agree with that, or does it seem stiff enough as it is?

    Thanks.

Addendum to my first post, dealership had my car for 18 days before I got it back, worked wonderfully loved it. Less than 50 hrs later, it was back in the shop, this time the top would not go up. D/T CA lemon laws, I have to wait until it is out of service for 30 days or more. this should be the end of next week. I have heard of this happening to only 2 other cars so far, does anyone know of any others?

I just had a Close Encounter with a RED GTP convertible today. Have been checking the "big" Pontiac dealer here, but they only had one and it was gone as soon as it came in. Drove by the other local dealer (Larry Miller Pontiac, Caldwell, Idaho)today, and this red one was sitting there just waiting for me to take a look. Got to look at it for several minutes before a salesman finally showed up. He obligingly started it up and put the top down, then I put it up. I was surprised to see the deck lid only has a strut on the driver's side (can't tell that from the photos I've seen). Top worked very well, and it sure looks good either up or down. Bottom line price is about $34K. Unfortunately, I can't afford a $30K+ car but maybe a used one in a couple of years.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Actually that "strut" is only there to route wiring wiring bundle. It isn't structural at all. the whole decklid is captured by "lobster claws" at back of vehicle when it does the reverse open. When it opens "normal" it has hefty hinges on both sides.

I was at the dealer the other day having some service done and noticed they had 2 available, one white and one red, both msrp around $30K with no ADM. I asked the salesman to demo the top on the one in the showroom and wouldn't you know it the thing jammed in mid cycle! Seems to me the reliability on this hard top has a long way to go.

Another thing, I wouldn't force anyone but a small child to sit in the backseat for any length of time.

BTW - they also had a maroon G5 on display with a sign on it that said "not available for retail sale." Salesman told me GM dropped it off as a surprise. It must have been a preproduction model.

CAN YOU CHANGE BAND FROM THE STEERING WHEEL OR ONLY FORM THE RADIO UNIT ITSELF???? I HATE READING OWNERS MANUALS
    THANK YOU.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
Assuming you have a 2006 model, only from the radio.

The new steering wheel was limited to only 5 functions and BAND was not one of them.
  • jpavlickjpavlick Member Posts: 12
ok Thank you... It is a 2006.

I just purchased a G6 convertible and while test driving it, the noises started near the rear passenger side quarter glass window, in the roof. I refused to sign any papers until they investigated it more. They found a GM document on this problem. The doc id is #1842064. It explains to a technician exactly how to tweak the panel-to-panel latches located in the headliner to attempt to solve the problem. After they fixed it, I could still hear a slight rattle, occasionally, while driving on a rough road, but decided it was not bad enough to kill the deal. It beats the wind noise from a ragtop. I have a hard copy of the document if anyone needs the specifics.
Went to one dealer in town and they told me they would call,if they ever got a G6 convertible on the lot. Went to another dealer 3miles from my house and they had 3 sitting on the lot (2006). With $1000 rebate because we have another non-GM vehicle in the family and 0.0% interest for 36 months, we had to go for it! We even got them to budge a little on the MSRP. They would not even talk GM family employee (family member works at Delphi) discount on these cars though, unless I ordered one.
I have had it less than 24 hours and so far, I love it!
Free oil changes and car washes as long as I own it from the dealer too!

I can not find a definite answer on this question. Will the Monsoon in-dash 6 CD Changer play MP3's? It seemes that the Monsoon system in other Pontiac's will but I can not find out definitively that the Monsoon system in the G6 Convertible will play MP3s.
  • e2helpere2helper Member Posts: 1,002
It really has to do with the radio and not the Monsoon Amplifier/Speakers and No, the radio doesn't play MP3 in that format
  • vagatorvagator Member Posts: 18
I have just had my 2007 2 days, the wife is on a trip with it right now. I do remember the sales person saying it would play MP3, but haven't had a chance to check it out. :)

Does anyone know if there are any of the 2006 GTP convertibles around - still "new in the box"?? my wife has fell in love with the blue color offered in 2006 but, evidently no available in the 07 models - are there national dealer searches available?? do you have one at your local dealer??
  • bxdbxd Member Posts: 186
Just go to pontiac.com, and choose Build Your Pontiac. Choose the G6 Convertible (GT or GTP) and build it. At the end they will ask for your zip. I did it and found 3 Electric Blue's in the first page of results, but none in my state. You may have one close to you or the dealer can setup a trade with another dealer.
  • vernshirleyvernshirley Member Posts: 2
Thanks, I did that - from my zip and found none in the Southeast, but I am contacting my local sales boy to see if he can find one that you referenced -- I appreciate the help.

Has anyone found anything serious about the 06 GTP Convertibles that would tell me to not buy one??
  • bxdbxd Member Posts: 186
In case your sales guy gives you a run-around, use 44130 as your zip and scroll down a bit... you'll see three. I would have the names/numbers of those dealers in hand to pressure your sales guy into doing something. After all you could easily fly up to NY and drive it back home. ;-)

has anyone had any problems with the top not closing completely. recently bought 2007 and had to return. any time we would close the top it would come up with a message top not secure.
  • gmerilligmerilli Member Posts: 25
I have th 07 also and I only had one incident. When the top closed the pins missed the locking holes, as the process of the top closing progressed the pins fell into the holes with a rather loud and unusual thunk. This problem has not reoccurred since. I have had the car for about a month with probably 50 or so openings and closings(including all the demo openings for people that wanted to see it open and close. It sounds like the dealer needs to adjust your roof. I would imagine that this being a new technology for Pontiac, you may have to have them try several times before the adjust it right.

Why would anyone buy a drop top car without roll bars?
  • bxdbxd Member Posts: 186
    1. In a 4 seat convertible, the roll bars are mostly to protect the rear passengers only.

    2. I assume you're trying to compare the G6 to a Miata. Totally different cars. With how short the Miata is, if you flip, you and front seat passenger's heads will be scraping concrete. With the length of the G6, unless the crash is extreme, the windshield header will provide *some* protection and the angle should help keep front seaters safe. Now a serious hard flip, and the windshield header will squash. See point #4 below.

    3. Even the Miata's factory bars aren't very highly regarded. That's why there's two large businesses selling "serious" crash worthy rollbars. The Miata's ain't too bad but SO many cars with roll bars out there are only for "show" and wouldn't hold up to any flip. There are no standards for these bars. The manufacturer can make it out of any thin old aluminum and claim it would help in a crash (and to a tiny amount, it would) and that would be "legal".

    4. When was the last time you saw a car flipped? They have a low center of gravity. Sure it happens, but usually it's a matter of the driver being asleep or drunk and driving off the highway and through a ditch or something.

SUVs might flip in a "normal" accident (tire blow up, someone ramming you, sliding on ice) but cars don't flip like that. They tend to slide. Years ago my father lost control of his car on a slick highway. I was in the backseat and so scared, but despite sliding off the highway into the right ditch at a high rate of speed (60) we just SLID and spun, never came close to flipping.

A good set of roll bars would be nice, but there's a lot of convertibles out there without them because they're not all that necessary. I'd worry about having the side air bags as a priority.
  • alp8alp8 Member Posts: 656
    agreed, across the board

I sat in a G6 convertible today, as well as a Solstice. I am 6'2" (34 inch inseam). I was too tall for the G6. I could find a position for my head, but I still had to "find" that position, even with the seat back and the back reclined too much. I fit better in the G6, but I realize they are very different cars. I liked the feel of both cars. Impressive for the price point. And nice looking.
  • m1miatam1miata Member Posts: 4,551
Nope, not comparing the G6 convertible to Miata at all. I did own a Miata at one time, and bought an Autopower roll bar, which are beefy.

The windshield, the way I understand it, only has to support the weight of the vehicle, in other words any decent roll over, it caves in.

I check the Internet CHP, which is the highway patrol site, and see lots of roll overs every day listed. I have a scanner, which I listen to now and then, and hear a TC roll over quite often. Maybe it is a California thing, but I would think any part of the country where cars travel over 30 MPH, you are going to have roll overs. Come to think of it, an SUV can help you on over while sitting at a stop sign.
Things happen! That is why you see roll over protection for every convertible made in Germany, since I believe it is the year 2000. They have a video on the Net of a roll over test on a VW. The roll over tee in the back did the job beautifully.

GM is just saving some money. If people don't care about head protection - fine. Why bother with side air bags, anti-lock, ESC and the rest of the jazz, if ya lose your head? :P

Enjoy the ride. Hope it has the steering from the GTP and not that electric assist steering.

I have the 07 convertible with sport and prem pkg. Want to know if anyone else notices a slight vibration/shimmy in the steerting wheel (top up and down) when driving between the 60 and 80mph speeds? It's no a constant, but i do feel a slight shimmy in the wheel.

Just picked up the car today and drove from Orlando to Miami Beach, had top down and up for the trip. Wow, must say, I'm coming out of a 99 slk230 and this car, although no mercedes, was very impressive. The accelarating on the turnpike was great, as well as breaking and ride. Loved the xm radio and the 8 speakers, what a great car for the money!

Just not use to that slight shimmy feeling in the steering wheel. Can it be front wheel drives do this?? I stopped and double checked the tires. They all had balance weights! Any feed back would be appreciated ;)
  • m1miatam1miata Member Posts: 4,551
No, while I am not a fan of FWD, my car, and previous cars with FWD do not shimmy as they go. First see if the air pressure is too high in the tires, which is something typical. Then you may see if they can re-balance the tires, the Hunter system is the best, and realign the front end. If it does it more with the top down, see if they have a shock tower brace on the car. If not, adding one may help. It does on a Miata, but that is a lighter car. Have fun and keep the shinny side up!

The Solstice and G6 Coupe are the two good looking cars, IMHO, in the GM line, until you get up into Cadillac expense, or Corvette.

Out of curiosity, why did you sell the SLK?
    -Loren
  • guestguest Member Posts: 770
Thanks for the response Loren. I'll drive again today and see what happens! Sold the SLK as it was a 99 and it still looked good, wanted to sell it while I could get some $$ for it. Although it was a Mercedes, it still was approaching 8 years and just decided I wanted something new. New mercedes are to much $$$ in my opinion. The G6 has real nice lines and thought it to be a lot of car for the $$$! Thanks again,P
  • bxdbxd Member Posts: 186
Good point - the G6 in top trim has StabiliTrak stability control. Another factor that will help a lot against rollover risk.

I'll agree with you GM is saving money. It's a $30k convertible. You can only buy so-much car for $30k. To get anything substantially safer you're looking at $40k. There's also the question of packaging. To add roll bars that actually DID something, they'd need space, and the trunk thanks to the hard top is already crowded.

I live near Cleveland and drive 44 miles to work each day. During all the snow/ice storms I've seen over the years, I remember maybe 1 or 2 rollovers of cars on the highway. I've never seen a rollover on secondary streets. Perhaps it is California. :)
  • bxdbxd Member Posts: 186
Was the shimmy constant, and directly correlated to your speed? If so, it's probably out of balance wheels. You want them "road force balanced". The hunter machine can simulate the tire on pressure going down the road, as opposed to just spinning in the air. It's really great in what it can do!

If it was an oscillation that you noticed after driving over a bump in the road, that would have cowl shake. Probably not much you can do about that. A front strut tower brace may help though.
  • sobeg6sobeg6 Member Posts: 50
Thank you, defiently not the cowl shake. this was a smooth road at around 60 - 80- seems to happen at specfic speeds in between these numbers. I think its the balance as well. thanks again. i'll have it looked at
  • m1miatam1miata Member Posts: 4,551
I would say one to two a day is not uncommon for our county here in California, and we are but just over 150,000 pop. Roll over accidents seem to happen pretty often and those without a belt tend to become a national statistic. I would just buy the coupe, or get the SLK (used) if going convertible hard top, and have all the safety features, plus RWD. Best to avoid being 1144.

    Hi everyone,

I am posting today for a very strange reason. I have been very blessed with a very successful Tupperware business. Well, Tupperware rewards those of us that meet 12 - 18 month challenges with this wonderful car. The Pontiac G6 convertible 2007. I received my car 3 weeks ago. It is beautiful, but just not practical. I have 2 children, a husband and lots of stuff. So I have decided I need to sell it.

The car has 1007 miles on it, it is Silver and all the bells and whistles - including remote keyless start, 18" aloy wheels and much more.

I guess I am asking if any of you could suggest a way to sell this car - I had a dealer tell me I wouldn't be able to get more than $21,000 - I think he is crazy.

If you have any advise for me I would appreciate it. BTW, I am on Coastal GA.

    Thanks in advance!

Hi Laura, I would first go to Kelly blue book .com and put in all the info regarding the car. if it's the 3.5 or 3.9 engine, prem pkg. sport pkg. etc.... get a number for selling it on your own. i would than come up with a number that is reasonable and put it on autotrader .com or ebay.. i found auto trader to be better. You may want to try your local paper, supermarket bulletin board etc... good luck!

I use craigslist for my car shopping, and woudl probably list there. That way you hit your local market.
  • gmerilligmerilli Member Posts: 25
Sounds Like your dealer is trying to take advantage of your situation. A lot of these cars have additional dealer mark up. A private party sale for a 2006 model, listed in edmunds is $26.5K and Wholsale is $25K. Since yours is a 2007 I would add another $1500 to those prices. Sounds like your dealer is trying to turn a quick buck at your expense.

My local dealer just got a G6 convertible and I went to give a look today. I must say, I was very impressed with it. My gripe with pontiac is plastic, plastic everywhere, and even though it was there, they have classed it up somewhat.

This one was ivory with black, 07 GT (I think), and it was very classy looking (better than the Solstice INSIDE).

Hope Pontiac has another hit on their hands!!

I picked up my 2007 G6 convertible yesterday. I decided on a specific color and package combination, with side airbags, and would not waiver from that position. (I really like the two-tone ebony/morocco leather seats -- takes the sportiness up a notch.) This made the search a little more difficult, but my local dealer found one at another dealership and did a swap. Other dealerships offered to do the same, but only if I would sign on the dotted line first. I told them no negotiations until the car was sitting in front of me. The car arrived at my dealer two days later. I wasn't in a mood to haggle, so I printed out the pricing information from this site and said I would pay only the "what others have paid" price, which was about $500 above dealer invoice and $500 below MSRP. The dealer agreed. Amazingly, when I went into financing, the dealer had knocked off another $500, calling it a rebate or something. No silly add-ons like alarms, clear-coat, or overpriced chrome wheels. Overall, the most pleasant car buying experience I have ever had.

There are not that many options for this car, but you may want to print out the option page from this site and understand the interaction between the packages. During my searching, some of the salespeople provided some misinformation out of confusion. For example, I was told twice that I would need to find a GTP if I wanted the 3.9L engine. In reality, the GT with the sports package includes that engine. Tip for when you are cruising the lots: If the car has two chrome exhaust tips, it has the 3.9L engine. In addition to the larger engine, the sports package adds the StabiliTrak, 18 inch wheels, automatic air conditioning and 6-way power driver seat. I'm 6-2, and my head hits the roof on the passenger's side, but I can move the driver's seat down, which provides ample headroom. Also take a hard look at the premium package (which is required if you get the sports package). That package also gives you the power driver seat, the leather "appointed" seats, remote vehicle starter system, and a mandatory item for me -- XM radio.

I've only had the car all of one day now, but I really love it so far. No problems with the top.
  • gmerilligmerilli Member Posts: 25
You say 6 way power seats. I believe that they only have 4 way(up, down, front , back)....the control for the seat back and lumbar support is manual which really surprised and disappointed me. Other disappointments - CD changer does not play MP3s; not in-dash GPS system available; no way to access the limited trunk space with the top down; Having said that I would need to spend at leat $10,000 more to get a hard-top convertiblewith everything that correct this(a 4-cylinder EOS is about the same price but the 6 cylinder and other options quickly take it to almost $38,000). So, in the end, I decided that I would save the extra money because my ultimate goal was a hard top convertible. BTW, this is my first experience with XM radio and I love it also.
  • sobeg6sobeg6 Member Posts: 50
Wow, sounds like me! you did your home work as well. I had to remind the sales person at two dealers that for 07, there is no GTP, it's the GT with the sport and premium pkg that makes it a GTP equivelent! I did well on price also, I got the same options and pkg as you and got the cost down to 30,800. Did you pay around the same cost? I wanted the new blue gold crystal metallic with taupe interior which i had to wait for, but finally did get it! Love the car. Had an Eos on order and canceled it for this. Seen my first Eos in the street yesterday and now I'm real glad with my decision. It looked so short and stubby. Let's compare notes in a few weeks! Good luck
  • aaamorrisaaamorris Member Posts: 21
The ability to play MP3s would be a nice option, but the system sounds so good I'd hate to run MP3s through it. (Yes, you can get decent sounding MP3s with a lossless setting, but most sites like Rhapsody default to 160 kbps, and most consumers use 128. But that's a discussion for a different forum.)

Here was a surprise: I was playing a CD I had burned, and when I looked over at the CD player the name of the song was displayed. Not sure how that works, but it appears the G6 has some ability to read tags.
  • aaamorrisaaamorris Member Posts: 21
You must be a better negotiator; you beat my price by $300.

Nothing happening at the office today, so I drove up and down the coast for a few hours. The car has a nice feel and ride. I'm very happy with my buying decision.

The radio has an automatic volume feature that raises and lowers the volume to compensate for the ambient noise. I don't have a great deal of experience with convertibles, but on a recent vacation I rented a PT Cruiser convertible for a week. At freeway speed, I was very aware of the wind in the cab and I couldn't really listen to the radio at a comfortable level. The G6 is a completely different experience.
  • sobeg6sobeg6 Member Posts: 50
I had a benz 99 slk230 b4 this, so its a bit different! but love it :) How did you send the auto volume feature?

Also, do you notice if you have the drivers window down and hit some road bumps, pot holes, you can here it rattle in the door?

I am the one that earned the 2007 Pontiac G6 Convertible from Tupperware. I have taken much of your advise and I will be selling the car for $28,000. That dealer was trying to take advantage - I guess because I am a woman? I understand that he wanted to make a profit, but seriously?

Anyway, my Silver G6 Black leather interior (premium package)is officially for sale. I hope I will be able to sell quickly or I will put too many miles on it and have to lower the price - LOL - It is FUN to drive!

    Hello:

I would like to share my experience with my recently purchased G6. I have been looking for one for most of the summer. Every dealer I went to did not want to take anything off and most wanted above sticker price.

A few weeks ago I went to a dealer in Turnersville, NJ and the salesman wanted to charge me 8.8% for a 72 month loan. I politely told him I have a credit score close to 800 and he should run my credit so I can get a lower rate. He refused so I left. He also tried to tell me I would not get a better deal anywhere else and I should just purchase the car from him. He also told me he sold 3 G6’s last week alone (which was not the case at all since I had been monitoring their inventory and they have the same 3 G6’s listed on their site for the last 4 weeks). I hate bad salesman.

A few days later I went to a dealership in Marlton, NJ and they had listed on their website a blue gold crystal metallic G6 with the leather package upgrade with remote start, heated seats, side airbags, and the price was only $800 more than the base model. Normally the leather packages run around $1500 above the base models.

When I inquired about the car they had no idea where the car was. Apparently the website is updated when the car ships from the plant and not when it arrives so I did not get to see the car.

They wanted to charge me $1500 over invoice for a chance to buy the car before it arrives. Of course I refused and then they came down to sticker price and ultimately I got the car for $500 under sticker, 3 yrs worth of oil changes, and a 7 year power train warranty thrown in as well. Plus in the end I got an excellent interest rate. I have been hoping to score a blue gold crystal metallic car too. I took possession of the car last Thursday and I absolutely love it. It rides great and it feels great to drive. Lots of stares as I drive down the highway too.

Is this a good deal? I have not had any luck getting a better than this and I have gone to 5 dealerships in my area over the last few months. Does anyone think there will be incentives for this model anytime soon?

    Thanks for reading….

    Kevin

I have had an 07 G6 Convertible for over a month. It has the premier and the sports package. The premier was supposed to have 6 way power seats(standard is 4 way). In my mind I think that I got the 4-way seat(up;down;front;back). I would have though the 6-way would have controlled the seat back also? The seat back control on my car is manual. Does anyone know the answer to this?
  • bxdbxd Member Posts: 186
Does the whole seat go up and down only, or can you individually raise and lower the front of the seat bottom, as well as the rear part of the seat bottom? That would qualify for 6 way.

My SVT Contour has all of the above plus the seat-back reclining, and it was marketed as an 8-way.

You could go check out some G6 coupes/converts at the dealer to see if yours is normal.
  • sobeg6sobeg6 Member Posts: 50
Hi, they only offer one type of power seats on this vehicle. So you got it correct! the non power is the lumbar support at the seat back. The power brings the base of the seat up/down & fwd/backwards!

PS- do you notice a slight shimmy in your steering wheel around 60-70 mph? Thanks!
