My mirrors do not rattle--how far up is the volume? I think the sound system is "cheap" and not nearly as good as others. I think the name monsoon popping up often is unnecessary and I wish there was another display other than the radio disply for all car functions--another cost saving shot by GM
I do have a lot of rattles in the driver door, truck area, etc.
it is still a fun car but i would not give it rave reviews. Underwhelming is more like it. Remember the car is based on a low end car so its unfair to compare to a 50k bmw 3 series, even the chrysler is 3-4k more. I used the gm card so I had incentive to buy this car.
would I buy another one--no way
even the new g8 becomes suspect--but thats the fault of gm management. They just do not know how to build brand loyalty--(ie--the old 4 speed tranny is an antique)
I would take a new G6 convertible for a test drive, and compare the shaking side mirrors. If they don't shake, there is something wrong with yours.
You say no matter what the volume or setting of the bass you have the shaking. I can guarantee you that if you turn the volume down, it's not your radio shaking your mirrors. If your radio is off and you're sitting at a red light, are the mirrors still shaking?? Is your steering wheel shaking?
I know this has been aggravating for you, but it doesn't sound like a common problem. Hang in there a bit, let's do a little self-diagnosis to figure out what is causing the shaking, and then perhaps try a different dealership.
thank you for the suggestion - it is on my to do list. mirrors and steering don't rattle when radio is off. believe me, it is the radio, or the vibration of the speakers, being that there are 3 unisolated speakers in the cheap door panel. i'll try another dealership and let you know what happens.
Just for some more feedback, I can certainly get my side-view mirrors to shake when I get a heavy bass track playing. But if I'm listening to something w/o bass (talk show, etc.) I don't see any side view mirror shake. I guess I expect some movement w/ the power the sub-woofer is kicking out, and I can still certainly use the side-view mirrors even when they're shaking (no danger of not seeing another car, etc.).
I'm probably the wrong one to ask as if you read prior pages on this site, you will notice I had enough of the rattling and other problems that I actually traded in the vehicle after 9 months. What a shame as I still think the car looks amazing. But, that is not enough reason to keep a car. I'm real disappointed with Pontiac. They could have had a major player here, but they failed big time. cheap handling, cheap transmission (4speed????) This car should have been so much more!
Okay, let me stop cause I can list at least 10 reasons why i traded in this tin can. To answer your question, I do recall if I played my radio louder than volume 4 the doors rattled and the mirrors vibrated to the point I could not see out of them. I was to wrapped up in the other problems and really did not play the radio much.
Would you believe I purchased a new Mini Cooper S convertible with all the packages and I love the handling power and ride. I got over the smallness as soon as I drove it. It may not be a hard top but who cares! It's one of the best handling cars I have owned! even better than my 99 slk230.
I appreciate your reply. You're absolutely right the car IS a tin can!!! Well, I think I'm worse off than you were. For starters I don't think I can trade it in, not sure I can afford what I really want. But, that's another story. My mirrors vibrate no matter what volume the radio is on. Yes - they do vibrate less during "bassless" air-time and on a lower volume, but how did the Pontiac's design team figure we're to listen to the radio when the top is down and driving any speed over 10 miles per hour??? I'm really at a stand still here. My dealer won't fix it (even after mechanic agreed off the record that there is a problem,he said that GM won't give him the green light to fix anything, so he can't take responsibility to do anything - who can blame him). I don't want to throw this around, but many of my issues with these people stem from me not being taken seriously b/c I'm a female that has challenged them at every visit. I only got that much out of the mechanic b/c a co-worker can w/me. Thanks again for your reply :O)
our first problem is we are dealing with a company that will likely be bankrupt in a few years-gm has little to spend on technology--its amazing they were able to engineer the hardtop convertible.
but I will say again--the g6 is the least expensive hardtop convertible by a few thousand--and now we know the reason.
the bmw is 15-20k more--is it worth it? not for me. the chrysler is a bit bigger in top down trunk space but just as underpowered--the vw is not much different.
so from a value perspective the g6 is fine--it's just not a great car.
I understand that I have to expect some movement, but what I'm dealing with is in a league of its own. No one else seems to have the major vibration that I'm experiencing 98% of the time I have the radio on. I think I should video it and post it on YouTube, maybe then the "Big Boyz" @ Pontiac will get the picture and see that my car isn't to their "specs." I really do appreciate your reply. Thank you :O)
If yours really is a major problem that other G6s don't have, you need to take the matter into your own hands. It stinks, but the dealer's don't generally give good service unless you get very serious with them. Tell them you test drove another one, it didn't rattle, and you are demanding they fix it for safety reasons. Stress the word SAFETY, and that if they don't fix it you will seek other recourse, including a law suit. Be nice about it though! Trust me, any dealer being told the car they sold, that is still under warranty, is a safety threat and they could be held responsible will take action. If that doesn't work, BBB. If that doesn't work, go to your city's court, file a small claims suit. Costs very little and I bet the case never gets heard. You'll get a call from the service or dealer manager to make things right.
And if they can't fix it, does your state have a lemon law? That's another avenue to follow.
Like others have said, these things are selling for $26,000 and up (in my area). Nothing else like it for the money, and Sebrings top out at about $38,000.
So there's a lot of car there for the money, but it does seem to have its bugs. If you can work those out you'll be happy.
I can validate this poor woman's issue. I have test driven her actual g6 and can say without bias, there is an issue with the mirrors vibrating wildly and I can say the frequency at which it vibrates is much like a tuning fork. When driving at night, headlights look like white globs in the mirror, making it impossible to distinguish distance. It is an annoyance, but also can pose a safety issue.
One shouldn't be told, don't drive with the radio on, or lower the bass or volume. Its a shame this attractive woman who definitely "fits" her G6 is given the run around by Pontiac. If I were her dealer, I would want someone like that driving around top down. Lets face it, an attractive woman in a hot car turns heads, and after checking out the chick, we all check out the car.
Shame on Pontiac. Poor marketing and customer service. I went from a GM to an Acura, and it was the best move I ever made. Good luck Pontiachater. I hope you get your issues resolved.. I want to see more of you in that car on the highway.
Hello Again, You need to call Pontiac headquarters directly and find out who the district manager for Pontiac is in your area. You will get an ear that listens and can make appointment to meet this person at your dealer. Local service centers do not want to deal with this, so if you advise them you are contacting such.. they will work with you. I did it!
As far as the other guys comment comparing price to BMW - i don't care if this vehicle is the least expensive in hard top convertibles. It's still a decent amount of money to spend and you should be completely satisfied with the vehicle and not settle! Best of luck.
i commented about BMW and my point is that the G6 is a cheap version of the BMW--lets see--30k vs 45k
what do you miss by not spending 15k--a better engine, a better trans, better interior, better sound system,
but from a fit and finish perspective--the quality should be there--and its not up to snuff.
but my problem goes further--GM is not doing a complete job on this car--the underlying car is cheap--all the parts are installed but they have a lower spec. which leads to problems.
SoBeg6, How on Earth did you get to the District Manager? I was on the phone w/the rep. and her supervisor for over an hour yest. and they would not allow me access to such. They said that the DSM that they spoke to on "my behalf" said there's nothing to be done. I asked to speak or how I can get in contact with the DSM and was told I can't. I feel like the DSM is the Wizard, Dorothy got to meet him, maybe I could get a call through =O) How did ya do it?
bxd - I've done the safety and law suit bit, but the rep. didn't flinch. I've started looking into the NYS lemon law and getting my thoughts together for an email to Att. General (tryn' to get as much done w/o retaining a lawyer), didn't think of the BBB nor the small claims court - thanks for pointing out those avenues
I understand that I'm getting a hard top for a decent price, but $33,000 ain't that cheap - even on a lease...
HappyAcuraOwnr - too bad acura doesn't have a convertible... coulda solved all my problems
Focus! HAO... Focus!!!
I appreciate the compliments, but my problem is very real. An "experienced" driver such as yourself had difficulty distinguishing distance at night, lucky for me - you witnessed it on your own (being that I'm a perfectionist n all). The car is unsafe to drive, Pontiac has to come to terms that their design was not well planned out. Now it's getting them to admit to it.
I'll be on the road... make sure you're not driving anywhere near me - especially on a warm NYC night :P
If the car is not your cup of tea then why don't you just sell it?
No sense keeping a car that you clearly does not live up to your "perfectionist" standards.
I'm not sure why you own a pontiac if your username is "pontiachater" That's kind of counterproductive, isn't it?
My mirrors do rattle a tad but thats because I roll with the base and volume all the way up. It does not make driving the car unsafe and I can still use the mirrors to make safe lane changes.
Gee.. Kevin... if you've read the previous blogs you would have chosen your comments a bit more carefully. Became a "hater" when Pontiac didn't live up to the standard that they pride themselves on. Don't you worry about my "perfectionist" standards, it was a comment to someone who knows what I'm referring to.
Unless you know different and can advise me on it, one can't sell a leased auto. Again, if I'm wrong, then I would appreciate the info. so I can proceed.
My mirrors rattle every time I ROLL... and the VOLUME ISN'T ALL THE WAY UP. If you feel the need to contribute.... Please school yourself on the information provided on previous conversations, and then you put your two cents in. But, thanks anyway.
Good for you! What a ridiculous response from kevgret. You obviously were not a pontiac hater when you leased the car however, through your negative experiences with the vehicle you have become one. Don't give up. Keep pushing the issue and call Pontiac's headquarters. If you can't locate the number let me know and I'll get it for you. Keep me informed!Perry
Pontiac's G6 Convertible the Worst The insurance industry put Pontiac's first convertible with retractable hardtop, the G6 Convertible, at the bottom of the list of 10 vehicles tested.
The 2007 G6 open-top model was "acceptable" in frontal crash testing but was the only one of the group to rate just "marginal" for both side and rear crash protection. And the test car included front seat-mounted side airbags.
But unlike side airbags in some of the other models, those in the G6 were designed to protect front passengers' chests and torsos, not heads. As a result, the crash dummy's head in the G6 hit the side windowsill with a severity that could lead to a serious skull fracture and brain injuries, the IIHS said.
And the G6 Convertible's driver seat came loose from one its floor tracks during the frontal crash, according to the IIHS.
I have had my car for over a year now and paid right around 30,000. I live in the Chicago area and have had the top up and down many many times.. This is my only car and have over 20,000. miles... I love this car I have had no problems and for what I paid for this car I still get many compliments and many many looks.... THis car is great for what I paid.... Anyone who is thinking about getting one and you want some style and a very cool car for little money this is the car for you....
I ditto that! It seems that jpavlik and Kevin are the only ones w/o any glitches with their cars. LUCKY them! Thank you for your suggestions, sorry I haven't responded. I've been researching, speaking & showing my mirrors to mechanics & audio guys, along with a few Esqs. They ALL agree that Pontiac has made a MAJOR design flaw with the placement of the speakers (along w/ all the other flaws) and will NEVER admit to it. They can't. Imagine that... a recall on their entire line of HTC g6s... I know that will never happen and GM is legally secured, so I'm taking the first steps - letter writing. If all else fails (which it will) you'll be seeing me on TV. GM has to come up with a way that I can safely drive my car. I'll keep you updated
the problem is not with the mirror--the problem is that in order to get good sound out of a cheap stereo system you have to turn the volume way up--causing the vibration.
Monsoon system--? they should have put in a bose system or similar.
Unhappiness motivates comments more than happiness. "I love my G6" over and over gets pretty boring. If 10,000 people love the car and three hate it, you'll hear from the three. I bought my G6 last year and just hit the 5000 mile mark. With the exception of three days when it rained, I've driven it with the top down every day since I bought it (gotta love So Cal weather). I've had zero problems; no rattles, no top problems and none of this "mirror vibration" (and I like my bass LOUD). I've owned much more expensive cars, but this is my favorite. I love the ride and handling. It doesn't have the "go-cart" feel that my Porshe had (but handling is a personal preference, and some people like that feeling). The Mustang is also a good choice, and I looked at those as well, but then you have to deal with a rag top. The cabin is never quiet with a rag top, and anyone with a box cutter can get into your car. Being able to switch from convertible to hardtop with the push of a button is great. I'll never own another rag top. The lesson to be learned from the negative reviews on this site is that there may be some quality control issues, so give the car a thorough test drive. And one more thing -- if you do get one, get the two-tone leather. It really takes the styling up a notch.
MUSTANG!!!! The only reason I passed up speed and known quality was b/c i was looking for a hard top convertible. I guess I'm not the one you should be listening to, it seems that I'm the only one with problems that are a constant every time I drive my car. G6 looks nice, hardtop great concept - Pontiac poor designing and poor customer relations. PLEASE research both cars before you get locked into one, don't make the same mistake I did. This is the a great place for you to start. Rene
I'm happy to hear that you have a problem free experience with your G6. The only reason why I originally posted wasn't to "complain" about the car - it was to see if my problem was unique and to prove a point to my dealership that it may very well be. So, I too would prefer to be writing how much I LOVE my car, but until Pontiac can fix the problem them that only I and a few others seem to share - I can't.
I traded my 2002 Lexus SC430 for the G6 Convertible.
I put $10,000 back in my bank account. I got more leg room, a usable rear seat, a better warrantee and regular tires (unlike the rock hard sucky run flats on the Lexus.)
On the downside, I lost burl wood and Mark Levinson for black plastic and monsoon sound. I like the XM better in the Pontiac than the am/fm in the Lexus.
As for all the vaginas out there complaining about the open air experience of their convertibles, I have to laugh. If you wanted pure isolation from the world you should get a sedan. The WHOLE reason for a convertible is to feel the world. Anyone who complains about the texture of a convertible is missing the point.
I really like my G6. I prefer it over the 5 year older Lexus, and when my Sky Redline came in at the local dealer after a 2 year wait, I declined it, as it was much too small inside. The G6 Hardtop Convertible is a bargain and a value.
Mustangs are fun cars. The main reason I didn't go there is that living in Michigan I needed the front wheel drive for the winter.
In regards to the rattles, I think a thorough test drive before you buy will help. Make sure when you test drive that the windows & weather stripping aren't lubed to mask the problem (wipe them down thoroughly before you drive if they are). The good news on the rattle is that I think it can be fixed at least semi-permanently. I had my car in twice before they managed to quiet down rattles in the roof and squeeking from the windows (with some lubricant). Since the last visit about 6 months ago, I haven't had any problems and haven't had to add any more lubricants to the windows to keep the noise away.
Now that it's finally summer in Michigan & the sun is out, I'm loving the convertible!
I appreciate your input. I honestly believe that my car seems to have a defective mirror. Despite some of the comments that ignorant people have been making towards my inquires or concerns, the truth of the matter is that I would like my car if I wasn't experiencing the problems that I am.
BTW... my driver's side rear panel is still giving me a problem. If you figure yours out... let me know.
I have printed out a "repair directive", which I found in one of these forums, referencing the tightening of certain tension rods. I have misplaced the printout for the time being, but will find it, let you know and head in for repair soon. good luck.
Little ole "ignorant" me pulled this off of another message board. I hope this helps you in getting your rattling solved.
"You mechanic should have access to GM service bulletins. On my invoice from when my car was worked on, I had the roof tightened per bulletin #06-08-59-003A, and the roof latches adjusted per PI# 1865996. Hopefully that helps! "
thank you , just saw Kevin's posting. He's a lil upset with me, but shouldn't be taking things personally and assuming all comments are towards him all the time....
If you really want out of the car you can get out. A lease is just another way to pay for a vehicle, you must call the lease company(probably GMAC)and just ask for a dealer buyout. Depending on where you trade it the dealer can get a payoff and work the deal on whatever you want to get into. You are probably upside down on the car, but if you are making payments, you might as well make them on something you like. People buy cars they don't like all the time, it is the way of the car business. Just get out of it and take your lumps and move on!!
I like my G6 HTC better now than I did when I first got it. It rattles alot when the weather is cold, but now it is pretty good. I have about 6500 miles on it now, but it is a cheap ride with a hardtop convertible for only $320 per month, you can't touch anything like it for that number.
If it weren't for the problem that I'm having with my mirrors, I would love my car. I would even ease up a bit on the issues I have with the rattles, if they just agreed to fix the mirrors. Wow.. $320 and month?? I'm paying $410 - that's another reason why I'm complaining. If I reach the point that I've exhausted all avenues, then I will further look into a trade in, don't know what car co. would want to pay it off though.
I'm worried I'm falling victim to the faulty roof problems. Over the last 2 weeks it's been in the 90's in Michigan. For the last few days, almost every time I go to put the top down everythings fine while the trunk opens. However, when the roof first uncouples from the top of the windshield, there's a 'popping' sound and the roof stops moving. After that, I can't lower it anymore but instead need to close it and try re-opening. The 'pop' almost sounds like the roof has expanded in the heat and the connecting pins are violently popping out of the sleeves in the windshield when the process of lowering the roof starts.
Anybody had a similar experience? Anyone in the South where summer's already hit hear this noise when the drop the roof?
On another note- Yamawho, what are the details behind that $320/month lease!?! I thought I did well to get a fully loaded HTC at $390/mo on a 10K miles/yr 39 month lease - I also had an employee discount helping me out on the price.
I live in Florida, had my G6 since Feb., and have not experienced the roof pops you describe. And it's been hot! However, I had one better...complete failure of the roof about a month ago! Pushed the button and nothing. They replaced a computer module and no issues since.
I wasn't having any roof rattles until the roof failed and I left the dealer with all kind rattles and creaks. They claimed they made no adjustments, just a coincidence! They have since made more adjustments and replaced some bushings per a service bulletin and the rattles are greatly reduced.
Even with these problems, I still enjoy the ride. Time will tell...
I've been following the forum for a while now and felt I should chime in. I just got my 07 G6 HTC back from it's first service (oil change). Two problems I reported... 1) Rattle in the right rear with the top down. 2) Rear center console clips broke. The dealer told me the rattle was a door strike/latch plate out of adjustment (fixed) and the center console has been ordered (unfortunately it's just cheep plastic but hopefully won't break again). Aside from that our family has had an absolute blast driving this car around. We still get looks driving through our sub division and the neighbor kids are still lining up for rides I don't mean to rub salt in any wounds but I just wanted to share my good feelings I have for my G6.
SO, if you had to do it over again, would you buy the GT hardtop convertible or another convertible? I am having a tough time deciding which one to get. I want a backseat, traction control, and a decent price. :confuse:
Thanks for the reply. Although I love my car, I think Pontiac missed the mark by not making the CD player MP3 capable and adding an Aux Jack. I also wanted ONSTAR which is not available and the radio console is so integrated with other functions that I don't think that there will be any aftermarket items available. I know that the VW is is similarly priced. but once you equip the VW the same, you have another 8 grand in the car. Although I think that the VW has a winner with the Moon roof built into the top.
GM did miss it on the aux jack and missed it with the all in one radio system. GM could have done a running change if it cared. But then again the car is affordable.
The winner is the BMW hardtop convertible even though its 50k. 6 speed auto, pop up safety headrests, high perf engine, real sound system. and it probably will retain its value better than the g6.
As I keep saying the g6 convertible is a "nice" car but not outstanding in any area. It exemplifies why Japan and now So Korea have taken over.
Of course the BMW is much much nicer! It's 50k as you mentioned. G6's are selling for about $26k in my area. That's 2 for 1. If you have the money for a $50k car, you won't consider the Pontiac. And if you don't have money for a $50k car (that would have a bigger payment than my house) you won't consider the BMW.
For your typical middle class american, there is no debate here. I would even venture to say that many lower-upper class people will choose the value of the Pontiac.
The real problem is if the dealer is not willing to fix the little issues, or does not know how. And that's a problem I've seen with GM brands, Ford brands, Honda, and Nissan. (not saying Toyota is perfect, just indicating I haven't had first hand experience there)
Well, the day after I posted about the roof "popping", it stopped completely. Now when I go to open it, the trunk raises, but the motors just whirr without the roof retracting at all. Fortunately it still closes & is driveable. I need to set-up another appt at the shop.
Despite my problems, I'd still answer the "would you but it again" with a resounding yes (just be prepared to spend some time at the dealership). I actually heard some rumors about a future model with a 6 speed manual & a 252HP 3.8L. It's hard to look 2 yrs in the future, but I'll probably trade in for that when this lease is up.

But, thanks anyway.
The insurance industry put Pontiac's first convertible with retractable hardtop, the G6 Convertible, at the bottom of the list of 10 vehicles tested.
I'll keep you updated
The drivers side rear panel does however and still needs to be brought in for repair.
Monsoon system--? they should have put in a bose system or similar.
PLEASE research both cars before you get locked into one, don't make the same mistake I did. This is the a great place for you to start.
So, I too would prefer to be writing how much I LOVE my car, but until Pontiac can fix the problem them that only I and a few others seem to share - I can't.
BTW... my driver's side rear panel is still giving me a problem. If you figure yours out... let me know.
Kevin
good luck
You are probably upside down on the car, but if you are making payments, you might as well make them on something you like. People buy cars they don't like all the time, it is the way of the car business. Just get out of it and take your lumps and move on!!
I like my G6 HTC better now than I did when I first got it. It rattles alot when the weather is cold, but now it is pretty good. I have about 6500 miles on it now, but it is a cheap ride with a hardtop convertible for only $320 per month, you can't touch anything like it for that number.
If I reach the point that I've exhausted all avenues, then I will further look into a trade in, don't know what car co. would want to pay it off though.
I don't mean to rub salt in any wounds but I just wanted to share my good feelings I have for my G6.
The door rattle drives me nuts.
(not saying Toyota is perfect, just indicating I haven't had first hand experience there)
Despite my problems, I'd still answer the "would you but it again" with a resounding yes (just be prepared to spend some time at the dealership). I actually heard some rumors about a future model with a 6 speed manual & a 252HP 3.8L. It's hard to look 2 yrs in the future, but I'll probably trade in for that when this lease is up.
Why should you feel like you are rubbing salt in any wounds? If you have a good experience with your G6 by all means please let us know!
We need more people who have positive experiences to post here.
