And $500 with labor is also not possible just for headlamp install. At $90/hr labor at Toyota ,that is 5 hrs of labor . That's just not possible. Irrespective of the actual time it takes- the labor rate books would mandate much lesser time. :P
Ok, found more info on this. There was a TSB on this from Toyota and this is for the HID lamps on;y,not the regular lamps . toyota offered to reduce the price on the HID replacement . Here's what I found in a Prius forum: """ 1. Toyota has sent out letters/issued a TSB for your bulbs, whereby Toyota dealers are supposed to be selling your OEM bulb for the "reduced" price of $150 each or 2 for $300.
Toyota Will Pay For HID Repairs, as per the Letter! """
Lot of complaints about HID issue in Prius but the NHTSA decided there was no need for a recall as per New York Times :
Now we know the rest of the story. I did remember the flap a few years ago, just did not take the time to research. I think Toyota lost some loyal customers on both the NAV screen failures and HIDs with huge replacement costs.
Consumers filing complaints on the agency’s Web site said repair costs had ranged from $300 to $1,000. Failures occurred on vehicles with as little as 25,000 miles.
Toyota is under the gun with all the improved mid sized sedans that have been released and are being released. I haven't heard a thing about the redisign. Anyone else see anything? If they don't bring it, they may be in deep dodo.
I don't think 1/2 the usual mileage applies to all of them. I was just repeating what the owner told me. My sister's usually reads in the low 30's in the winter.

Face the facts, US buyers are BIG suckers and ToyLex has done a good job in exploiting their ignorance.
I don't think my father is a sucker for getting a Lexus ES 300 from Carmax a couple years ago. I think he's a sucker for letting me talk him into helping me get an American car for my first vehicle when I was a teenager. He should of AXED that plan and stuck with the Japanese.

Actually she should have said " The brakes are no longer STRONG enough to STOP this BERSERK toyota ".
Or maybe the berserk toyota also experienced a brake failure at the same time as the electronic malfunction ? This is possible because as you see, toyota's manufacturing quality is by now obviously comparable to that of Korean cars more than a decade ago, and possibly worse, because even those old Korean cars don't have toyota's ghastly problems that we have seen.
With such poor quality, multi problems and corporate greed / shenanigans, ANYTHING that may go wrong is possible with a toyota.
You hit the nail on the head man ! toyota is most despicable NOT for making products with problems BUT because of their shenanigan like behaviour.
I am old enough to know that nobody have, or will ever make perfect products. But toyota's shenanigans have little competition in the automotive industry.
There's a BIG difference between a mediocre manufacturer and a cunning one / ruthless one out to win at all costs !
But not surprisingly, toyota prevailed over him. How can a single honest man prevail over such a big bad corporation with billions of money to fight legal cases ?
There is nothing wrong with people prefering, or even loving a particular car brand. But whats NOT RATIONAL is how they continue to support that company when it is proven that they are basically CROOKS wearing neat suits in their offices everyday !
I just don't get it. Its not about Japanese vs American. Its about GOOD vs EVIL.
For those toyota posters here, did your mum ever taught you the difference between GOOD and EVIL ?
I am amazed how people just don't get it. Suppliers can be the same but the SPECS and the price demanded are different for each automaker.
Suppliers simply adjust the quality to fit the reasonable, or outrageous demands of each automaker.
Not just in the US but in Europe, China and Japan, I am sure that there will be common suppliers for all Japanese car makers. But the fact remains : toyota's problems are still far bigger than the other Japanese car makers, even after making allowance for different sales levels.
But I am sure NOT one of them. I drive Nissan, Honda and Hyundai. And like I said, all 3 are pleasures to own and drive with minimal problems. Especially Nissan.
But not all imports are equal. One, toyota, is a crook among them all. You will be naive to think that everything from overseas is great. Just like not everything abt the US is great, the same goes for things from overseas.
Its up to each of us to be rational and tell the difference.
If youtube videos, numerous press reports, numerous media interviews and several solid evidences like the internal toyota documents released where they boast abt saving millions of dollars by delaying recalls and so on are NOT enough for you, then what is ?
Testimony from ALIENS ?
Its like the Madoff case. Do you need to see and hear the testimony of EVERY single Madoff investor for you to believe he is a crook ?!
Do you need to verify the broken bank accounts of every Madoff investor because he lost lots of money to Madoff ?
Of course not EVERY SINGLE toyota have problems. But the same goes for the other brands and the domestics.
Get this right. You are one of the lucky ones. But with toyota's corporate mentality, you will need more luck in the years ahead, because if something happens to you, toyota will MAKE SURE in court that YOU are at fault.
You keep saying I don't have proof even though I have said it, do you need EVERY data from EVERY Madoff investor to know he is a criminal ?
OK, then I throw the ball back to you. PROVE to me that toyota is the most reliable. And pls, don't use jd power's ratings or any other media. These can be bought off by toyota.
Show me concrete proof. Like what you said. Let's see what you've got.
Like I said, the quality of toyota is overexaggerated and the bad quality of American cars is also overblown. I said before, There is a Boeing in the US but NO Joeing in Japan.
If Americans can build such complex machines such as the B747 with a decent safety record, then Americans CAN build decent cars. Don't believe the posters paid by toyota to say otherwise.
Mulally, not surprisingly, is from Boeing. And his engineering background there SURE will help Ford turn out better cars. Like Carlos Ghosn, both have engineering backgrounds.
Now, anyone wants to guess, from what background is toyota hot shot katsuaki watanabe ? I know the answer but lets see if the toyota posters here know their idol as well as they think they know ?
Now you know why toyotas sell so well in the US. Like a girl with Aids who don't tell it to the upcoming husband, Americans have been fooled by toyota for a long time.
Remember, you can't make intelligent decisions when toyota COVERS UP SO MANY of their quality faults.
Just like those Madoff investors. The difference is toyota is smarter than Madoff.
Even after all that toyota had done, there are still so many toyota poster boys here. The toyota mad men must be laughing like mad back in Tokyo. " Hahaha, the Americans, so stupid ! Treat them like that still buy from us ! " Too bad they are not that stupid way back in World War 2.
Toyota Motor Corporation To Suspend Production In France, UK Due To Weak Sales-DJ Dow Jones reported that Toyota Motor Corporation will temporarily suspend production at plants in France and Britain for a total of 12 days on the back of declining sales stemming from a string of massive recalls worldwide. The Company will halt production from April 6-9 at its plant in France, which manufactures the Yaris subcompact. Officials said further production adjustments may be carried out toward the end of April depending on the sales outlook. In Britain, Toyota will suspend operations for four days from next Monday to Thursday, and another four days from April 6 to 9 amid sluggish sales and replacement of models being manufactured at the plant. The company will also suspend one of the two production lines at the British plant in August with a quick recovery in sales unlikely amid the expiry of cash-for-clunkers programs in many European countries. It also plans to cut 750 jobs at the plant by soliciting early retirement.-
Toyota Motor Corporation To Realign Japan Manufacturing Operations-Reuters Reuters reported that Toyota Motor Corporation plans to reorganize domestic manufacturing operations across group companies to consolidate production of similar vehicles regardless of brand, according to the Nikkei business daily. This move is aimed at boosting productivity, lowering costs and ensuring quality, the newspaper said. Toyota Motor Corporation makes vehicles in Japan at 18 plants. By phasing in the reorganization as new and updated models are introduced, Toyota Motor Corporation aims to complete the transformation by the end of the decade, the Nikkei said. Toyota Motor Corporation has set a goal of shaving JPY100 billion off its annual production costs by 2012 by increasing the use of common parts among different models, the newspaper added.- - - -
Toyota Motor Corporation Confirms Plans To Temporarily Idle Two US Plants-DJ Dow Jones reported that, according to Detroit News reports on its Web site, Toyota Motor Corporation confirmed Japanese media reports that it will temporarily shut two U.S. plants beginning later this month. The Company will idle its Georgetown, Ky., assembly plant February 26, and tentatively has scheduled a three day production hiatus in March, the days for which were not specified. In San Antonio, Toyota will halt production March 15-19 and April 12-16. Employees at both plants will be paid during the shutdowns and will be expected to report to work for plant improvement activities.- - - - - (repeated)
I don't deny toyota has gone down hill. But prior to buying my current 01 camry (175k trouble free miles) 10 years ago, I had mostly american junk. I will never buy another GM or chrysler product again. And those 2 messed me up for Ford, I'd be afraid to try them again.
I think one reason why a lot of used cars have gone up in value recently is because a lot of the new ones have even more problems. I wouldn't hesitate in buying another camry from that series with the 4 speed transmissions. Why are all the mfgr's going to 6 and even 8 speed transmissions? It just adds to the things that can go wrong. Sure it might pick up fuel economy, you don't burn much fuel stuck on the side of the road.
There is/was a problem with the HID headlights and it wasn't just the bulbs. My point was high fuel mileage is great, bit it can be given back by a problem with some other expensive component. Well, at least your car buying strategy makes some sense. Let me put it in another way for all the folks here, if you really want to buy toyota, I suggest you get a USED ONE.
The older the better, because at least the quality is better, the parts used are better as they are made during the days when people like katsuaki watanabe is NOT in command.
BUT if you want a NEW car or a young used car, avoid toyota like the plague ! Remember, a very old toyota and a NEW or young toyota today is as different as night and day !
The opposite goes for GM and Ford. Avoid the old ones but when it comes to buying NEW TODAY, I have much more faith in them than new toyotas. After all, with a new talented commander at the helm like Alan Mulally, you got to be fair, and realize that the domestics, especially Ford, has changed.
Pls read this from start to finish. Once again, the matter that infuriates me is NOT because of the defects per se but because toyota PLAYED with the recall agenda and RISK their customer's lives !!
Some toyota posters say the situation had gotten better because those SUA news have decreased in number. Other than the possibility that toyota bribed the press to keep quiet, I found out another reason why.
You see folks, toyota is so cunning that they quietly bought back defective toyotas and take them out of circulation. And their owners are asked to keep their mouth shut. And guess what, the big surprise is their own technicians are experiencing SUAs too ! This is not often reported !
Read the complete story here, there are 3 parts. Don't miss any !
Its obvious that if toyota DARED to bribe and silence victims here in the US, the situation is not any better elsewhere. Read these stories in Thailand :
" There was a similar post from a Chiengmai driver a couple of months ago (search this forum) and he may have accepted a Toyota 'settlement' "
" Anywhere in the western world, Toyota would have had a recall to repair or replace ALL the braking systems. Here in Thailand, life is cheap and I'm sure it would be cheaper for them to pay off a few accident victims and keep it quiet rather than suffer a recall and damage their reputation "
" Like in the article I posted my friend was made to sign a paper that he would not publicize his brake problem - they paid him to shut up "
" Toyota’s attempt to blackmail their Fortuner client into silence is a definite proof Toyota acting mala fides risking their clients’ lives with equipment Toyota full well knows occasionally to malfunction.
That letter would be pure dynamite in any court case in EU or USA involving Toyota Fortuner/Vigo brakes. And Toyota would pay through the nose both damages and punitive damages. "
Hehe, the Thais did not know that toyota is so cunning, ruthless, slippery that even the US courts have difficulty getting them.....For the rest of the story, pls go to the link above.
Frankly, your posts remind me of the 9/11 conspiracy theory video Loose Change.
As in the video, which is constantly being re-edited and re-released, whenever one of the "theories" is debunked, (as many of yours have been) they simply treat it as the claim was never made, ignore it and continue onward barking out the same old tirades.
Its really gotten old...
But, I'm pretty sure you will continue, just as the 9/11 conspiracists continue to do. And, your "source information" will continue to be just as weak as their information as well....
I've also read quite a bit about the reduced mileage on Prius' in the winter
ALL cars' mpg drop in winter. They simply take longer to warm up and reach peak efficiency. And it's not just engine oil - think of all the gear oils and transmission oils that thicken up in extreme cold.
Running the heater may affect a hybrid more than a regular gasser, but a full electric would be far more affected than any hybrid.
Actually she should have said " The brakes are no longer STRONG enough to STOP this BERSERK toyota ".
I agree - but she did *not*.
It's a major red flag when a person claims there are "No" brakes. The systems are hydraulic, not by-wire. Brakes would fade slowly.
Or maybe the berserk toyota also experienced a brake failure at the same time as the electronic malfunction ?
Brake failure would leave evidence such as a hydraulic fluid leak. It would be obvious.
Do yourself a favor - bleed a set of brakes, once you get a close look and yes, FEEL, for how brakes work, you will understand.
Anyone who knows about cars knows that. The mere belief of an impossible claim shows a lack of knowledge of cars. This is something that editorials from Keith Crain and others have mentioned, but non-car guys will never get.
That is Biller, the guy who went to arbitration and lost MILLIONS, including punitive damages for stealing Books of Knowledge that showed...
That showed NOTHING.
The lawyer he gave those documents to found nothing and dropped his lawsuits against Toyota.
Are you saying that the star attorney against Toyota, their #1 enemy, reviewed this books of knowledge and tossed them out, and you are going to overlook that?
Hello? McFly?
The guy is a disgruntled ex-employee and a crook.
The lawyer dropped the roof strength lawsuits, so the content in the interview is exactly the false claims he made and precisely the cases that were DROPPED because they found Toyota hid NOTHING.
Yet you still try to use that, proving your severe bias.
A federal judge ruled, case closed, it's over. Let it go!
How can a single honest man prevail
LOL!
Honest?
We are talking about Biller, what do we know about him?:
* a lawyer (yeah, they never lie or hide the truth) * who stole Books of Knowledge (knowingly, admittedly) * lost millions in arbitration * lost not one but two countersuits * had to pay punitive damages for his crimes
Dimitrios Biller lost (badly) in arbitration. Embarassingly bad.
Did he? He ended up with $1.1 million of Toyota's money. I thought being a whistleblower was someone that saw evil in a company and wanted justice. Biller seemed more like a con artist. I think Sikes will have a better case in court. I got a theory that somehow Bob Baker will use him as a witness to electronic not mechanical failure in ToyLex vehicles. Unless that attorney got him paid off long ago.
bought back defective toyotas and take them out of circulation
Would you rather they have sold them and put them back on the road?
That is standard industry practice. Your beloved Nissan, Honda, and Hyundai do the same thing. As they should!
Also, the service advisor observed:
70% throttle input
That's consistent with a mechanically stuck throttle, as opposed to a software fault that would read a zero position as 100% throttle position. That sorta proves it was not electronic failure.
Thanks for helping prove that!
The driver, who asked not to be named, told ABC News that while Toyota did not ask him to sign a confidentiality agreement
An evil corporation would have made him sign. Toyota fails at being evil, LOL.
The problem is you share these links but read selectively.
Once, just ONCE, read one of your own links without automatically believing everything about Toyota is bad. Take off the blinders!
At least they are OEM Nissan blinders with a nice logo on them. :shades:
Did he? He ended up with $1.1 million of Toyota's money
HIS money, not Toyota's money. He lost the majority of HIS pension.
1.1M is PEANUTS for a career attorney's pension. A fraction of what he was entitled to.
Biller seemed more like a con artist
Agreed. The federal judge who ruled in arbitration also agrees with us.
Background for those who may not remember: Biller worked for Toyota, settled a rollover case and paid millions to an owner. Wonder if he took kick backs in that settlement he paid? That would explain why Toyota would try to get rid of him, and also why he became disgruntled.
Any how, trial attorneys smelled blood, got a hold of the Books of Knowledge, which were supposed to, according to BIller, show Toyota hid a bunch of stuff about their cars growing fangs and killing people, basically. Oh, and having weak roofs.
The catch?
The Books of Knowledge did *not* show that. The trial attorneys said no thanks, dropped the rollover lawsuits.
Biller lied, so he was screwed, pretty much. The bickering ended up in court, and BIller lost his shirt, or at least most of it (his pension).
Read between the lines...
Basically, Toyota called his bluff. He surely wanted them to settle, he'd collect a handsome "fee" for consulting with the trial attorneys and being their star witness.
But Toyota did not blink. They must've known what was in the Books of Knowledge, so instead they went to court.
As I've said before, given all the exaggeration and unfounded paranoia, its probably a great time to buy a Toyota, especially a Camry. 0% and close to invoice. In 3 years its resale will be strong again - just like buying stocks at the bottom of the market. Keep up that bashing guys and maybe I can get an even better buy on one this spring!
It will be interesting to see how this hybrid and electric stuff settles out in about a decade. I think the Prius line vehicles are too small to be the dominant Toyota in the North America, but who knows? I'm not sold on this stuff yet. I'm thinking it gets too cold in the north and too hot in the south and the western desert for them to be optimal performers and cost efficient. I'm also wondering about battery disposal issues if hybrid or electric goes big time?
I'm also wondering about battery disposal issues if hybrid or electric goes big time?
I tend to agree that the disposal issue is the 800 lb gorilla in the living room. A bit like the "encouraged" move from incandescent light bulbs to CFC bulbs, without a disposal policy to deal with the mercury in the bulbs.
Of course, so much of what we do here in the USA tends to be based upon "half-baked" ideas...
Now there was some fine government regulation. Most lamps are three way, but not CFC bulbs. So goes for higher wattage reading lamps too, hard to replace a 150W with a CFC. Better stock up!
That's odd; I got a cheap Walmart floor lamp a couple of months ago and it has a 3 way compact florescent bulb in it. Don't know the "watts equivalent" offhand. I guess a replacement costs about $10.

* a lawyer (yeah, they never lie or hide the truth)
* who stole Books of Knowledge (knowingly, admittedly)
* lost millions in arbitration
* lost not one but two countersuits
* had to pay punitive damages for his crimes
And he's honest?
LOL.
Given the bogus sources you continue to use, that would not surprise me one bit...

PERFECT EXAMPLE!
THANK YOU!
"Then I took my foot off the gas and pushed on the brake pedal. But, you know, when I pushed, nothing happened."
Wow, what a coincidence!
SUA and hydraulic brake failure each are one-in-a-million events, yet this guy experienced both at exactly the same time! It's a miracle!
You know what the odds of simultaneous failure of both independent systems are? 1/1,000,000 times 1/1,000,000 equals 1/1,000,000,000,000.
I believe it's one in one Quadrillion.
Yet you believe it, and even share the link! LOL
:shades:
You only have 4,999,999 more to go...
And won. HUGE.
Check out the "last picture" comment, lol.
