[I made this post the other day in the I4 v. v6 forum and decided it might be of some interest over here . . . .]

I drove my 08 EX-L I4 1200 miles this past weekend. I was headed west and traveling against a very stiff headwind for 350 miles or so. My travels took me on a very long stretch of Interstate 80 . . . lots of hills and relatively high elevation (5000' -9000').

I made some discoveries about my Honda on the trip: Foremost, I learned that the 4 cyl. engine is inadequate when trying to deal with 20mph headwinds, high elevation, gradual hills and interstate speeds. The car could not climb even gradual inclines without shifting down. Normally thats not a big deal. But, here, the slope was not sufficient to convince grade-logic to keep it in the lower gear. So, instead, the otherwise impressive automatic transmission was doing way to much shifting. I've liked the fact that my Accord transmission is quick to shift so as to keep in its power range. However, here, it was aggravating. The I4 simply didn't have enough reserve power so it was constantly down-shifting to maintain my 80mph cruising speed. I've driven on these roads several times before in my new car without such significant issues -- but never with a consistent and strong head-wind. It was too much for the little I4

I realize that I was demanding a lot from my car (hills, stiff headwind, high elevation, fast speed, etc.). But, I think my observations are notable because my 98 Accord would have done better. My 98 had a manual transmission - which makes a HUGE difference. But, I still believe the 150 ponies in my 98 provided more umph than do the 190 ponies in my 08 (and the power in my 98 came at a more useable rpm range (i.e. more power at lower rpms) ).

Interestingly -- with all these negative factors, I checked my fuel economy very carefully with 459 miles between fill-ups. I got 29.89 mpg!!!! I am very happy with that!! On the way home, I had a stiff tailwind and the transmission barely shifted at all. I have yet to fill up so I'm unsure of my fuel economy. However, I have 469 miles on this tank and the gauge is still reading about 1/4 full. So, I'll bet my fuel economy on the way home was WAY up there!! [update: I put another 50 miles of city driving on the tank and then filled up -- I got 33mpg.]

I might also note that, despite the various complaints on these boards about how firm the 08 Accord seats are, I found them very comfortable. I was sitting for 7 hour stretches and I was pleasantly surprised with the seats. I even, for the first time, used the lumbar support (which I normally don't use since the seat has such a "lump" around the lumbar area even without the lumbar supports). If you notice, airline seats are usually very hard -- but you can sit in them for a very long time without getting too sore. I think the same applies to the Honda seats --- not soft, cushy and luxurious, but I think I prefer them for long rides!

My final observation concerns wind noise: When I arrived at my destination, I hopped right into an 05 Honda Pilot and drove it 50 miles on the interstate. Unfortunately, I instantly recognized that the Pilot, is MUCH quieter than my 08 Accord. The engine/road/wind noise was much less in the Pilot than in my new Accord

All-in-all, with over 7500 miles on my 08 Accord, I'm happy with it. But, as much as I like the interior, the handling and the looks, I'm reminded -- its a Honda, not a BMW :D

I suppose manually downshifting to 4th gear to maintain 80 mph on an incline into a headwind at high elevation might have helped.

Too much road noise may be an unsolvable a problem. Camry and the new Malibu are choices that don't have that issue.
  • mickylongmickylong Member Posts: 29
I had a dealer tell me tonight (over the phone) that Honda has lease incentives ending this month on the Accord coupe but I can't find any info about either lease rate or cash back incentives. Can anyone confirm this one way or the other? I know with end-of-quarter individual dealer pushes their might be local incentives but I haven't heard of anything from Honda.

If anyone is wondering if the new '08 is quieter on the highway than the '07....its not.

Actually is several Db higher than the last generation...Honda has really screwed this up again. Consumer Reports will cite their usual complaint again...excessive road noise.

    Here's the link link title

Hey Honda are you listening yet?
  • jaxs1jaxs1 Member Posts: 2,697
I just went for a ride in a 2008 Accord and it wasn't very quiet for a new car, but probably not loud enough to avoid buying for only that reason.
For people who really want the quietest similarly priced sedan, they will need to get the new Malibu or a Camry.
  • jodar96jodar96 Member Posts: 400
Thank you for your comments. I think downshifting at 80mph on incline with headwind and 5 speed automatic should be expected. As far as Accord's gas mileage goes, my 94 Accord with 5 speed manaul got 37mpg one one trip once, 628 miles on trip odometer is what I remember as being the highest on any car I have owned. As stupid as it sound....I was ready to let it run out of gas to see how far it can go!!! My E430 went 560 miles getting 28mpg at 70mph

Also people commenting that the gas mileage of the new accord is not as good as the old model, need to remember that the 08 Acoord is larger and heavier than the 03-07 model.

about the road noise, I wonder if Zeibart's rust proofing/sound deadning treatment will reduce the road noise. I will do that this summer and report back.

My only complaint continues to be front seat back hump. I can't possibly see how that thing is comfortable. I have driven a lot of cars/suvs, none has had Accord's annoying seat contour. I must be in a very small group of people that has this issue.

Undercoating is probably not going to do much for noise. You would be better off just buying new quieter tires.

thanks for the link! i must admit i was also underwhelmed with the new v6 automatic combo...just doesn't feel very sprightly. is VCM the culprit since the v6 manual combo has gotten such rave reviews??
  • jam1000jam1000 Member Posts: 182
I have a question about the "auto" ventilation sytem on the V6. I have the temp set at 70, the outside temperature is in the mid-40s, yet the front vents are blowing out cold air (and with some force). The cabin overall is not that cold (though cooler than my previous car when auto ventilation was set at 70). Is it correct that the vents are blowing out cold air in these circumstances? Even when I have the ventilation system set to "OFF", I get cold air blowing out of the vents. I know I can turn the side vents off, but apparently not the vents over the center stack. Again, any way to turn the ventilation completely off?

(Yes, I've looked in the manual, and it does not address my questions.)
  • itochuitochu Member Posts: 107
I could not agree more - the V6 A/T combo is positively sluggish compared to my friend's 2007 3.0, and nothing like the power of a 250 HP Legacy GT Turbo. Where the heck are the other 24 horses? I nailed it at 70 to pass a truck and there was like nothing there! I expected a power surge and when I called to the engine room - it was sleeping.
  • merlion0821merlion0821 Member Posts: 143
I agree totally. I have both an '07 3.0 and an '08 3.5, and I think the '07 runs rings around the '08. In my opinion, the VCM is mostly to blame, and takes away the the luster of an otherwise nice car.

Does anyone have the rear wing installed on there 2008 accord sedan, and if so can you post pics? Thank you for your time.
  • marsha7marsha7 Member Posts: 3,703
I have not owned a Honda since 2001, but I was always under the impression that, in order that one cannot suffocate, even when you turn the ventilation system to OFF, it still allows some air to seep in thru the vents which are never really closed 100%...otherwise, a car with great sealing door gaskets could literally choke off any fresh air from coming in...I thought that was a safety factor in almost all cars for a number of years...
  • musicejrmusicejr Member Posts: 11
What I do before I turn the vents off is to set it to the "floor" and then hit off.
That takes care of the air still blowing out when turned off.
  • jam1000jam1000 Member Posts: 182
I have not noticed it in other cars, even those of recent vintage. Maybe it is a question of the force at which the air comes out or how cool it comes out (one part of my issue is that even when I have auto on and set to, say, 70 in 45 degree weather, the air from the center stack vents comes out pretty cool).
  • rog2867rog2867 Member Posts: 34
What I do is raise the temp on the auto mode(I have the ex-l with nav) until the air that comes out the middle vents goes off. The auto temp feature turns on a/c and heat to keep the humidity and the overall feel in the car comfortable. Also there are two sensors in your car one on the dash and one to the right of the steering wheel. The one on the dash is a sun sensor if the sensor senses bright sun it will adust the ac on thinking that the car is warmer. This is also happens if the car has been sitting with the doors closed for a while. Remember the temp your setting is for the interior, the car is monitoring the inside temp. Whats really cool is that if you are on dual mode and the sun sensor detects direct light coming at the driver it will lower the temp automatically. Thats how it works in mine anyway.

Article on 2008 Accord, both 2.4 and 3.5 models

To those thinking the non-VCM V6 is a lot torquier, it'll explain why.
  • itochuitochu Member Posts: 107
This is a great article and should be posted on the VCM site from which I have been banned. Clearly the engine has problems - lack of power, sluggish versus predecessors, a second slower to 60 than a Camry according to other tests, and economical??? This test and others (WSJ) bear out that it is NOT economical - so why did Honda do it?? PR?? A real head scratcher. Honda reallly foisted off a dog onto its loyal customers.

Does anyone know when Honda will come out with this accessory?

I was able to locate one for 2005-2007 models, part# 08E71-SDA-100.

So far excellent ride and purchase. Am v-e-r-y pleased, after carefully researching all the options of various other cars and options. Am a former owner of two Mazdas, but their current interiors, protruding radio antenna, fake "sporty" shift box were turn offs. The Accord has very good interiors, no problems with noise or other matters, except 'glove' compartment rattle, which no doubt the dealership will fix when taken in. It's a big car - imparts solidity. Yes, the seats are a bit hard, but they're comfortable, esp. the front seats. Highly recommended vehicle and the buying experience was better than expected. Hope dealerships realize potential clients need to be treated respectfully, not like ignorant consumers.

Okay, what do you guys think are the best colors for the 08 Accord?

I am thinking I want the white, which comes with the nice Tan leather, very nice and open. Plus, I think it would look good with tinted windows. The white is the brightest color out of the bunch, and you don't see it as often on the Accord, I thought black, but it has its draw backs. I am really liking the tan interior, when at first I wanted black, it makes the interior seem so open, spacious, plus, on a warm day, roof open, windows down, it would be awesome! The gray looks nice, but I see many of them. The problem is that Honda did not offer too many outgoing colors. I want something that makes it really stick out!

Let me know what you guys think are the best colors for this car.
  • elroy5elroy5 Member Posts: 3,735
They brought back the Green, which I like because it's different. I also saw a Gold one the other day, and liked that color too. Like you said the Gray is ok, if there weren't soooo many of them already. The Black is fabulous, and it's what my 03 is, but very hard to keep looking good. You can see every little thing on it.
  • bvdj84bvdj84 Member Posts: 1,724
Ya, I really like the green too, but not enough to make a move on it, gold is too older looking for me, though very classy. Black would look amazing with tinted windows, but I am so crazy about my cars, that I might go nuts with the black, wash, wax, dirt, and you constantly have to be careful. I have silver now, love it, but I want to step outside the box... get another color on my new lease... I am realizing that I think the white looks very sharp... I think I want the spoiler on it too. It looks fun! My local dealer has one, 4cyl, Nav
  • vietviet Member Posts: 847
I liked the green too but could not wait for it so I picked my second choice, metal metallic.
  • dpmeersmandpmeersman Member Posts: 275
I've had the green for over 6 months, thought I would possibly tire of it, but that has not been the case. Looks slightly different every time I see it at various times of the day. Black interior is somewhat stark and a little difficult to keep clean (shows dust like it's neon). Haven't had the experience of real hot weather with the black leather yet, so I've got that coming soon. With the white your considering and the tan interior, I believe it will require less attention to keep looking good then my combination. Good luck with your decision!
  • personatechpersonatech Member Posts: 105
I think you really need to look at the color combos together. I also like white/tan, but white cars are notorious for showing dirt as badly as black. Also, any car with a light interior would have to be leather in my book - it's just too damned hard to keep light colored cloth clean. Another plus for the ivory leather interior is the very attractive glossy wood trim - I think Honda's faux wood is far superior to their faux aluminum. I know you can opt for an optional wood trim with the black leather but it's a matte wood, not glossy, and doesn't look as upscale in photos (I haven't seen it in the flesh). The diamond pearl is my fave, but I don't want to invest in a V6 with today's gas prices.

So... I suppose my color choices would be white/ivory leather, mystic green/black, polished metal/black, nighthawk black/ivory leather. Of course, if you're talking coupe, then it's red or blue all the way!!
  • miltiadesmiltiades Member Posts: 16
The black carpeting shows every bit of debris - my car has grey seats, and this is the first time I've had a car with black carpeting - it just has everything show - next time will choose a car with different color carpeting.

We have an 08 Accord, 6 cyl. in the new red--it's darker than the 04 which I had before but not quite a burgundy. With the chrome door handles and grill, it is beautiful. Only drawback is the light tan interior--leather does show dirt and needs constant cleaning, but love the lighter carpet. I think it and the Pearl White are the sharpest colors out there. Love the black with black interior, but maybe not in the summer and black requires too much washing, etc. Good luck!
  • bvdj84bvdj84 Member Posts: 1,724
Ya, I am really leaning towards the white, it really looks nice, I drove by the dealership today, and really think it looks amazing. Very Classy, and the tan interior makes the inside look so roomy and upscale. Now, they did have a polished metal with the Honda chrome rims, and it looked awesome, but find no reason to spend nearly $3,000 for those rims which are not real chrome. I just do not want silver again, love it, but want to experience a new color.

I could just get crazy and get a RED EX-L coupe, which is absolutely HOT!
Tint the windows, and you have one sporty looking car!! I am really considering that, but it has only 2 doors, but then again how often do I take passengers, and if I really need to take them... Well, they'll have to find a spot in the back. It is fairly spacious. Either the Blue or Red look so awesome!! Literally,
I am really considering it! People have sorta talked me into it.
I am a 23yr old guy, shouldn't I live a little..... Ah... so many choices.
  • elroy5elroy5 Member Posts: 3,735
The local dealership got a Black V6 6 speed coupe, with the chrome looking wheels, and it was sooo nice. We were shopping and eating in the area, and the car was constantly being test driven. I wanted to stop later that day to check it out, but it was sold before I even had a chance. :(
  • bvdj84bvdj84 Member Posts: 1,724
Ya, I saw several coupes at the dealership, and have been there for weeks, not even moved! I am so impressed with the coupe styling!! So hot. Now, if I choose to go with a coupe, I wonder if they will hit me more with cost, I am getting great deal on price for the sedan, wonder if they will offer the same on a coupe.

Still not sure, If I want 2 doors.

I am currently looking at the
Accord EX-L 4cyl Navi - dealer is offering around $25,500 or so on this. 4 doors, spacious, more practical.
Accord Coupe 4cyl Navi- Not sure what they would offer or excuse they would give me. Throw out practical and drive!

Does anyone know 100% if these wheels will fit on a 2008 Accord Sedan EXL V-6. I know I am asking a lot but if anyone knows please help me. Thanks for your time.

I think you should definitely get the coupe over the sedan- if there is ever a time to be less practical it's when you're young.. I am 28 myself and bought an 08 EX coupe in October when they first came out. It is San Marino red with tan interior- and I added the wing spoiler-

Shortly before my purchase- my mother traded her 99 Accord LX sedan for an 08 LXP in the polished metal metallic - which looks very nice also.. but in terms of style- the coupe blows it away-

    just my two cents ;)

does anyone know if i can fit a full size spare in the "donut" well in the trunk? I can't stand donuts and would like to replace. I was able to do it on my 2005 Pilot, but that is a much different set up........Thanks in advance! :shades:
  • bvdj84bvdj84 Member Posts: 1,724
Ya, well I know, I love the coupe in red!! Truly amazing.... but I am current entertaining getting the 08 Passat, prices at $29k, and I am able to lease that with all the goodies for $328 a month, standard lease, $0 Down or due at signing... Alot of fun!!

Now keep in mind this is just an offer, and I am still really thinking about it, but I am thinking I would be crazy not to do it.. I would be trading my leased 06 SE Accord in.
I truly love my Accord!! but, I want to lease, the Accord leases are not very good right now, pretty bad actually, with the Passat, I am looking at just signing the contract, pick up my new keys and go! Ahhh, I don't know what to do though... I really love my Accord, but I am torn between both, and I don't actually own the Accord, it is leased, so if you had a choice....lol It is a toughy for me atleast, I am sure others wouldn't have this problem with choosing, but I guess you get used to a car, but I really don't feel that I want to fork over literally $2k for a an Accord lease, and only be at around the same payment for the Passat. Well, sorry for the longer explanation, but that is whats going on with my lease situation...lol :surprise:

    This was written on Oct-07.

As the owner of 2003 Honda Accord LX V6 sedan, I have great interest to find out the new 2008 Accord. I read several articles on the car magazines. As usual, they sound more like infomercial rather than real critique. Generally they feel the car has been improved. It is larger – one says it is now classified as a large car, only 4-inche shorter than Chrysler 300 sedan, but I read later from New York Times that Honda plays with the fine print of EPA regulation a bit on this subject, only the LX sedan, which is without sun-roof, is classified as large car due to its slightly larger overall interior volume. Either way, this is long way from its original root as the compact sporty sedan – the Japanese car of yester-year. It is also more powerful, more room, more features and etc and etc than the replaced model. These are general trend for Japanese car companies – increasing Americanization of its products to capture more market share from US-based auto makers.

I finally saw the new Accord in the dealer. My first reaction is that it is not that large after all, but it is definitely larger than the replaced model. My initial impression of its shape is totally lack of originality – you can feel right away it is a comprised result of focus-group data interpreted by Honda California Design Center. It side view has the shape similar to the BMW 5-series, although as seen on the advisement on some print media the side view of new Accord looks like a new C-class Mercedes sedan. Its trail is very ugly, it does not fit into the overall design theme of the car body, for me its trunk deck looks like some Hyundai products of late 1990s, and the taillight design and arrangement alike to the last generation of Saturn Ion – this look is very obvious for the light color car. The front portion looks like the upcoming Chevy Malibu, but its front bumper seems coming from GM part bin on 1990s. If this is the Honda approach to product globalization, what are they thinking? But some of Honda virtues are still there – the fit and finish are good, the interior is really improved from the last model and the driver seat seems comfortable – my Accord has a very funny seat, it feels fine for short trip, but very tiring for long trip. I like to have a chance to drive the new Accord on the road, and hope they fix some of deficiency on the previous model -- improve the brake, enhance the body dynamic during the turn. I always feel the tail of my Accord acting a bit awkward during the turn. This problem is very obvious if you got a chance to drive an all-wheel drive car like Subaru or Audis. According to the interview of chief engineer of the new Accord in Automotive Engineering International magazine, Honda seems aware the problem, and has made change on the rear suspension to let the car turn better. Also hope they keep the goodies on the previous model. I really like the steering on my Accord on most of time, but it still feels vague for high speed driving. I think overall it is even better than the steering on the G35 coupe, which is a more driver-oriented car and more expensive to own. More choice of color is also desirable.

Anyway, Honda Accord always aims to US market. So after 30 years since its introduction, it is now a truly American car, and it will be no doubt that Honda will sell lot of them in the next four years.

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone here has installed the window visor deflectors on a 2008 Acord Sedan. If you have, does it really help to diminish the wind buffeting against your head when only the front drivers side window is open?

I just piked up a Red EX-L coupe (with Ivory Leather interior) on Friday. It is a real head turner. Had a guy in BMW 5 series roll up to me at a traffic light this morning. After a long look, he gave me a thumbs up, as the light changed.

Most red cars are flashy looking. This one is classy all the way.

Go for it...get the San Marino RED coupe !!!

Are they still in production and arriving at dealers, or is what the dealers now have in stock it?
  • thegraduatethegraduate Member Posts: 9,731
2009s won't be arriving at dealers until around September, so the answer is yes, they are still arriving at dealers.
  • khoeykhoey Member Posts: 35
Of course, I have to state that I am wildly unobjective because I own one. That being said, I can't imagine that a dealer can't move a V6 MT coupe, with nav, black on black.

The black is really a challenge, and I freak out over every little knick or what looks like a nick, but there's nothing sharper when it's cleaned up, and I don't mind it.

It's a really nicely equipped rocket.

i have a 2008 ex-l 4cyl. I noticed that my glove compartment doesnt line up perfect with the door, as if it was hanging a little low, does anyone else notice this? Also is there a quick fix for this, or does the dealership need to look at it? Thanks
  • pt109spt109s Member Posts: 7
hi, i think i may have the same glove comparement problem, does your glove compartment door line up with the paneling on the door correctly?
  • bvdj84bvdj84 Member Posts: 1,724
Yep, Love the coupe, with black too, and is a challenge to keep it looking good, but I am good at detailing and cleaning my car like crazy, so I don't mind either.

But, my local dealer still has coupes from months ago, winter time on the lot, so they tell me they are moving, well, not fast enough, its either their approach and service, which I know they lack, or it is simply not drawing any attention..... my thought is they haven't worked on treating there people right... I asked about the Accord 1 last time before I make a decision on a car, and they were sooo rude. So it really comes down to the dealer! I work in customer service, and that inspires me more to treat people right.. make them happy. I have had 2 dealers now force their opinions on me, and I am like WOW, did they just say that.. Now mind you I do go alone, I am only 23, and look quite young, so I must say that makes a difference... they stomp all over me, make me feel stupid, but I am well informed! Oh well, in the end its about me, and what I want. If I was some huge, tall guy, Im sure they would approach him differently.

So point is, it really has to do with overall service of the dealer, its like they don't even want to try to be nice and down to earth. That can be a sale or no sale!
  • thegraduatethegraduate Member Posts: 9,731
It's interesting you mention this. I have a 2006 Accord EX and have the same issue. In fact, at night you can see the glovebox light always on; this was the case in my father's 2003 and 2005 Accords as well.
  • elroy5elroy5 Member Posts: 3,735
I find sometimes the glove-box door looks low, and sometimes not. :confuse: Sometimes I can see the light, and sometimes not. On a related note, the glove-box light does not have a switch to turn it off when you close it. If the lights are on, the glove-box light is on. That's just the way it works.
  • miltiadesmiltiades Member Posts: 16
Glove compartment door rattles in my Accord EX-L too. It's about the only flaw found this fine car.

i have a 2008 ex-l. can anyone else tell me if their compass is slow to react whrn making a turn. I have to drive 2 or 3 blocks for the right direction to be displayed. There are also times, when the right direction isn't even displayed at all. Any insight on this?
