Send me your phone # and I will happily pass it along to this guy the next time he calls. Then maybe you can be amused too. ;)

I just don't trust the sellers and their friends and I don't trust the bidding system on EBay.

I don’t think they’re all bad at least Son #1 isn’t but I’ll pass on you’re comments and we’ll see how it goes from there. You might get a call from him or he might sign up here (if he can afford the dues), and you can talk to him yourself. :)

As I’ve mentioned before my son bought a ’95 Trans Am to be his track car and as soon as he got it he took off the original tires and rims to install some biggies. He just put those originals up for sale on Ebay last week. He put a reserve on them at $180. A typical flurry of activity went on during the last few minutes and he got $242.50. He must have had some pretty good pictures.

He now has some money to go towards his next track upgrade which is what I think prompted the Ebay thing. :D

You have a lot more patience than I do. If someone told me that I would explain that I would have to charge $50. per test drive for someone who had no intention of buying. If they changed their mind and bought a car the test drive fee would be refunded.

I wonder what a doctor would tell her if she came in and just wanted a quick, free medical exam?

That’s what I like about this forum…the first hand experiences are priceless. :D

Wow, how come it's always the customer that's not intending on buying that takes the longest and most elaborate test drives, especially when it's busy?

I had this real estate agent couple who were shopping for a vehicle. They were coming back to me for 6 months when I worked at Honda. They finally found a used Mazda MPV but they had to know some sort of irrelelvant information about something in that car, and they wasted 2 of my hours on a busy Saturday trying to figure it out. Whenever they came back they never aksed for the same salesperson, always wasting someone else's time.

I should have called them up and got them to show me houses over a 6 month period that I never intended of buying just as a payback, but I have better things to do than that.

I always make the mistake of thinking other people have brains. I wouldn't even think of showing up at a busy time for a joy ride.

I will say that when I did those thing the sales guys were terrific, just taking a copy of my license, handing me the keys, throwing a plate on and saying "Have fun. Don't run out of gas."

Too bad most of those were done on Chryslers because nothing of theirs really interests me at this point (sorry, boom). The others were mostly Fords and that guy is my first call if I want to buy.

" Oh no, I'm just visiting and I'm out test driving every kind of a car I can think of so I'll know what to buy when I get back"

    At that point it would be reasonable to tell her she has two options (it's always polite to offer options);
    1) She can go to a car rental place and rent one of each car to test drive,
    or
    2) You can continue but your time is worth $100 an hour (reasonable since you might lose a real customer)

This lady is rude and inconsiderate and should be politely told you are not her servant.

I love that idea. I got downsized and canned 3 times in 4 years. Went to lots of job interviews and took stupid aptitude tests (one test was so difficult, a person with an IQ of 180 wouldn't be able to do it). Finally started my own company and it did very well. Now, I would love to write up phony resumes with great qualifications for jobs in my field (book publishing), go in dressed like a jerk, talk on my cell phone, spill my coffee all over the interviewers desk, wear Birkenstocks, tell him I need at least $150k a year and my own secretary and a chaufeur.

The dealers are just regular car dealers--both new and used car dealers.

Thanks for explaining the process and your own views for buying a car on eBay. Your explanation was an educational learning experience, and I can see that buying on EBay is probably a great way to buy a car, for certain people in certain situations. Not for everyone, but if it works, it is a great option for a way to buy a car.

jmonroe-- sold only one thing on ebay. Bought some replacement wheels for my jeep liberty. Real nice for total of $320 from a wheel distributer online. Free shipping - no tax. Had them mounted and balanced for $18 - all 4 :) . Took some snaps of my jeep wheels and checked past prices. Lots of junk -- one wheel stuff. The listings were 99-160 plus shipping. Rolled the dice and put them up with no reserve and AND free shipping. Had a buy it now price of $325. That option disappeared after 3-4 days with the bidding at about $125. I had the old boxes from the new wheels -- packed them up and took it to ups. $40 pretty much anywhere.
The no reserve and free shipping got lots of interest. People smelled a steal. The last 30 minutes it went crazy and the high bidder paid $358. They could have saved on the buy it now price but human nature was on my side. ;) Minus $20 in listing fees and $40 shipping I cleared $298 which meant it cost me only $5.50 per wheel to upgrade and the $18 for mounting.
I really like the wheels and the auction action on ebay was a blast. Probably never sell another thing like that online but it was fun.

This lady is rude and inconsiderate ....

Could be. But, I think that for the most part the majority of people don't even think about wasting a salespersons time. They are interested in test driving a car, for whatever reason, and that's where the "thinking" process ends. The commission and lost sales factor probably isn't thought of. As many here are so fond of saying, we savvy car buying regulars are the minority. :shades:

This lady was in the market for the car, so I can't fault her for wanting to test drive. That said, I don't blame isell for telling her to get lost.

gg- after telling my wife of your, and others, comment about letting her buy a new car first, she said how nice, and that now I can stay on Edmunds "longer". ;)

My soon to be 15 year old daughter disagrees on the new car for a teenage driver thread. Says you guys don't know what you're talking about. :P

She actually doesn't want my Regal as a hand-me down, but a preowned, by someone else, would be "satisfactory". :surprise:

Looks like she'll be getting "the bomber." :P

I personally would not buy a Rav4 or Corolla.Too small , too much plastic ,inadequate engine power .

I'm not a fan of Toyota, but you really should do research before making blanket statements. The Rav4, I believe, is the only SUV in its class to offer a V6.

It's not. Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Ford/Mercury and Chevrolet offerings spring to mind.

The RAV4 in V6 form is certainly not under-powered either.

I have gone into dealerships just to look around and have told salesmen that I was just looking and haven't even decided yet if I was going to buy a new car or keep what I have. And still they have pressured me to take test drives.

Oh my bad !! I should have made myself more clearer. I was actually comparing the Corolla and Rav4 engine powers not among their class but rather to the Camry and Highlander respectively. What I meant was that for me personally these 2 are are small and relatively underpowered compared to Cam/H`lander.. :shades:

But ,yes,in their class the Rav4 has one of the highest engine powers with the V6 option. :P

Probably about as often as car salespeople get asked "how do I get the best deal" or "is this car better than that".

No need to apologize or explain...you were right the first time...with a qualifier.
The 4 is a little anemic, not the slowest but compared to a lighter Corolla or Camry it is slower. I think when you were expressing your opinion you were thinking of the 4 cyl. But you were right on about the cheap plastic and the austere interior. I would get a one or two year old something else personally, or buy an Outlander which is much better handling and riding car...with a nicer interior.

Nice. Thanks grand. I knew the Mitsubishi Outlander had a V6, but for some reason I thought it was bigger, and didn't compete with the RAV4.

Interesting that you considered the RAV4 underpowered. I do agree with you that both are very small though.

Of course the Corolla is going to be smaller/underpowered compared to the Camry. Ditto for the RAV4/Highlander.

Those are really apples to oranges comparisons.

    "Ask any doctor..."

Ask a school administrator. I can't count the times that I was asked,"Should Mary take calculus or trig?" "Does Joe need a foreign language?" "What's a good university for Susan?" "Was there really a big fight at school on Friday?" On top of that, I couldn't even have a drink. It would have been all over town that the school system personnel director was a drunk.

When it came to cars, dealership owners would say, "Why didn't you buy your last car from me?" "Why do you drive a Chrysler? You need to let me put you in a Buick." I used to scream to myself, "Because I don't like your damn cars!"

When we went to our first party after retirement, I had shaved my head and bought a small gold earring for my right ear. I had 4 or 5 drinks during the evening. I have never had so much fun in my life because I could just see the body language of the guests. Even my wife admitted that, after 40 years, I deserved a good time at a party.

I tried out a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and a Jeep Liberty Limited this week. I told my excellent salesman that we would be trading within 90 days as soon as we received a check from the sale of some farm property in Alabama. I told him that if he was busy that we could set up an appointment to test drive. He wasn't; so we spent a nice hour with both vehicles. He showed us how the Nav and the Bluetooth worked. I was so impressed with those features---only because I have never used them.

As for the vehicles, the Cherokee didn't seem as roomy as the Liberty. The Liberty also has a bit more cargo space. Both cars had a smooth ride. I've been so used to the Explorer. It always had a rougher ride to me, though I love my Explorer. Also, both vehicles had very good stability control on curves and at higher speeds. I felt that the Liberty had better control for some reason. The interiors of both vehicles were well appointed, and the plastic elements didn't look cheap. The heated seats were a nice feature. I had never tried those. The rear cameras were wonderful. I definitely want that feature in our next car. My wife admitted that she needed them. Don't we know why? :P Visibility in both cars was very good. My salesman pointed out that visibility is very poor in the Jeep Commander, so I didn't even bother to test drive one.

My wife is sold on the Liberty. She told our salesman that she was ready to sign. He said, "Richard, why don't you start for home and the Mrs. will follow you in about thirty minutes?" Thank goodness everyone just laughed. My wife would be the biggest baby seal in the auto world. When I told our salesman that, my wife said, "What do baby seals have to do with buying a car?" :confuse: I explained later. She said that I must have learned that on "that dumb Edmunds web site". :D

Seriously, I'm not sure that I was impressed enough to purchase a Liberty. Still, it's my wife's turn. I could certainly live with it. It just might not be my choice. BTW, I looked at the Chrysler Aspen. It seems too big and bulky. We'll keep looking a bit more.

jipster.....your wife sounds like a fine person, allowing you to "hang" with us more.

Ah yes....the magical years of a 15-16 year old. Good point about how they view a family sled vs some stranger's "pre-owned" car. Good luck. And, I think that Regal would be a fine choice for your "soon-to-be-licensed" daughter. The one saving grace is she's female. I still remember the shock of that first insurance bill once my son was added to my policy at 16. :surprise:

isell....even if I'm planning on making a purchase "that day", I try to avoid walking into a dealership on a Saturday, or a Sunday. I know that the F&I alone is going to be backed up. Tuesday evenings seem to work well. No one in the showrooms. I can get in and out pretty quickly. I also try to do as much as possible over the phone....inquiring about colors, options, etc, to save time wandering the lot, or visiting a dealership who doesn't have what I want.

Richard.....I always seem to be a day late and a dollar short. First, I had the "cream puff" Grand Marquis a couple of years ago that you would have loved. A couple of months ago I had the Tahoe (another cream puff) that your wife would have absolutely been smitten with.

And if you tell people you work for a book publishing company it is a big mistake. You wouldn't believe the number of people who tell you they are writing their life story and they would like you to publish it. These people, who have the most boring, dreariest lives possible are going to write a best selling autobiography...and they think people are actually going to buy it!

Applebee's? I've always thought of them as the "poor man's TGI Friday's!" Actually, there's not much difference between Friday's, Ruby Tuesday, Chili's, or any other of those bistro-style chain restaurants. Lately, I've preferred local diners.
