For about the same price I can buy the dozer and run it whenever I want then sell it when finished
Check out your link again...it sold for $8100 Crawler
It is usually better to rent stuff you might only use once. I don't imagine selling one of these when you are through with it will be easy. All kinds of idiots wanting to take it for a test drive.
“I was overwhelmed and confused and I soon felt like I had been mistreated,”
Leonard, who is intellectually disabled
Leonard, who is unemployed
“I felt very disappointed how I was treated.”
But after signing a contract and driving the vehicle away, she checked prices at other Mazda outlets.
The dealer got too greedy and they deserve to be punished. However, they shouldn't be punished for selling this car.
I'm sorry, but this woman is stupid (note: this has nothing to do with the fact that she's intelectualy disabled). Even with her disability, she's obviously highly functional to be on her own and know to check other Mazda outlets.
This person had no business buying a car on her own. In fact, she had no business buying a car ... at all. She was unemployed, and is on a small fixed income.
I'm glad to see the authorities are going after the dealership, but there should also be some consequences for this lady. I'd love it if she had to reimburse the agency for some of the costs incurred due to her stuipidity, but that will never happen. But she should go to some sort of financial classes/counseling.
I'm not so sure $500-600 is high for a car payment anymore. There are lots of non-luxury vehicles that sticker for $35K+, including a Honda Pilot EX-L, Chevy Traverse LT2, Buick Lucerne, etc. Say a buyer negotiates a price to $35K (includes all doc & other fees + any dealer-added accessories), the state gets their 7% sales tax, and the buyer puts down $8K (includes trading in their old car that had over 100K miles). That leaves $29450 to be financed. On a 60 month loan the monthly is $491 before any interest is added.
If the trade is worth less (or heavens forbid carries negative equity), less cash down is provided, other things are added like an extended warranty, the financing is done for 48 month, etc. the price will go up. Of course it can swing the other way, but I don't think a $500+ payment is at all out of the ordinary for a middle-income family, especially one that needs a people-mover.
For the sales folks in this thread, what kinds of payments are you seeing people walk away with right now?
Although the new Sonata is impressive including the interior, some switches and buttons aren't exactly of the same high quality as Honda, Acura or VW and feel really cheap. But you can't expect everything for that low of a price!
In case you had not noticed the new Sonata is no longer a bargain (at least not in Canada). This may be a breakout car for Hyundai, prehaps the first car that they can sell other than on price (note I said price, not cost of ownership). Then again once the initial interest has died down they may have to resort to discounts, only time will tell.
An 8 year agreement with a balloon payment at the end is a totally unethical lease. Our state did away with balloon leases years ago. 8 years is unquestionably wrong for a purchase, much less a lease. But she did sign.
boom....I saw one of the recent "Top Gear" segments where Clarkson absolutely trashed the BMW GT wagon. For all intents and purposes, he said it was good at absolutely nothing. Pretty harsh.
I know my Acura dealer says he's selling all the ZDXs he can get his hands on. Those aren't exactly cheap, either. I think somewhere north of $50K.
On the other hand, I don't think I've seen even one Crosstour on the road yet.
Was yesterday. With a lot of mixed emotions I announced my retirement and two days later I was done.
They had a surprise send off that left me speechless. I didn't realize how much my bosses and co workers cared about me. Yes, I got choked up!
There were hugs, tears and more hugs. They gave me a huge card filled with well wishes and support. They really cared about me.
This wasn't easy. I was going to stick it out for a couple more years but I was losing interest and patience. Also the deaths of several family members and classmates made me realize I'm not invincible. I'm tough and healthy but this could change tomorrow. I know that.
What I will miss the most are my co-workers and the customers I cherish.
What I will miss the least are the miserable customers that I had to deal with too.
I hate to say this but I now have adverse feelings toward certain groups of people that I never thought I would have. This isn't normally me.
verdugo...jipster....I was thinking the same thing when I read that story. The woman is mentally disabled, but had the wherewithal to check pricing after the fact.
Not being there at the time, we don't know the details of how this went down. I'm not absolving the dealership. But, how anyone can go into a dealership for a set of tires, and end up with a new car purchase makes me wonder. It also makes me wonder how they got this lady financed if she's on a fixed income?
Obviously some pretty blatant price jacking going on with the dealership's employees. And, I agree that they should be held accountable.
But, somebody (as in this alleged victim) had to make a decision at some point that she wanted the new car, regardless of the original reason she walked into the dealership. And, she had to fill out a credit app (which apparently was approved). Then, she had to actually drive the new car home, when all she wanted were tires on her old car.
At any time she could have just said..."I'm here for new tires". How does someone convince you to buy a car if all you want is new tires on your old car? Is it more probable that she went in for tires, saw the new Mazda and liked it more than her old car with new shoes?
She had to say "yes" to at least a few of those questions before the transaction could take place.
I dunno....there's a lot of blame to go around. I do think the victim does have to bear some responsibility, however. And, the sales people in question should be fired, at the very least. The dealership should be forced to unwind the deal. The finance company (who also seems to have taken some advantage here) should have to eat the contract, too.
This is a story about they type of customer that I won't miss.
A few days ago I got a call from an employee of a BIG and well known software company. He wanted to know if we had any five speed Accord LX sedans in stock.
I took his number and searched our district for five speed Accords. In all of WA and OR combined there were a total of two. As I've said before, these don't sell well at all. I was certain I could do a trade and get one so I called hm back and invited him in.It was Saturday morning and I knew the afternoon was going to be busy and I told him that.
Well, naturally he showed up during the busiest time of the day when I had another customer. I managed to get another sales guy to help him.
Two hours later. I saw them sitting down while he ground every last cent out of a deal. I felt bad that I had turned this guy on a busy Saturday andI knew the other sales guy was out of patience.
Finally a deal was struck. As the sales guy walked him down the hall to the Finance Office the salesperson made a very dumb and fatal mistake.
The custoemr in a casual way asked him.." Oh, where is the car coming from?"
And the salesperson was dumb enough to actually tell him.
I think you know the rest of this story. The cheapskate customer then demanded of the Finance Manager that we throw in about 500.00 worth of accessories!
Since we were already at a no profit deal, we refused and he left.
I couldn't figure out why this had happened until the other store called us.
" Do you guys really want this dealer trade? We just got a call on it"
Wanna guess who called?
We let the other store know exactly what kind of customer they could expect and I just hope he was treated by them in the manner he deserved.
My BMW sales guy told me they aren't selling all that well- in Louisville anyway. He said they've only sold two since it was introduced. He thinks that the coming xDrive(AWD) model may perk up sales.

Consequences for the lady? According to the report, she is "intellectually disabled." Obviously these criminals took advantage of her disability. Exactly what consequences should there be for the lady? What these people did to her was to steal her money.
Craig, Congrats and enjoy yourself. Keep busy - they say that is the key. I cannot picture myself retired but I can see how you will like the great escape. I wish I could tell all the stories, but I look forward to yours. I always thought a consultant was someone who had been fired three times.
Hard to really take sides without knowing all the facts, and seeing the players. Since the media tends to spin things to get the reaction they want, and of course, each side will play up whatever makes them look (best/most honest/most sympathetic).
but, this one on the surface smells bad, especially if the gov't agency is talking about the major fines.
The most logical thing of course (and I am not sure hw far down the road this has gone) would be for the dealer to just undo the deal. Still can just buy the car back and cancel the deal effectively. Might have a little trouble I guess getting her old car back!
This is a bit of a surprise to hear of your retirement... but congratulations. From all you have written sounds like you've earned a little rest and relaxation. Always difficult to leave a job you like and enjoy, even more so in not seeing co-workers you have grown attached to. But, all those folks are just a phone call away, and you're sure to meet new and interesting people.
So, now I'm open to say more and tell stories.
As Ross Perot use to say, "I'm all ears."
Should I change my username to isoldhondas?
strangely enough, no IMO. Here you will always be isell/isellhondas.
Craig.....congratulations! I know you worked hard for many years, and hope your retirement is the best time of your life.
I retired some time ago, and believe me, there is always something to do. But the best part is you don't have to face those few customers that make life miserable anymore. And being from the Northeast, I don't miss shoveling out 100 plus cars every time it snows. :P
My career was with a large corporation for 30 years, and then spent 10 years or so selling high line cars to fill in the time until I was ready to hang it up completely.
I'm sure you will miss your co-workers most of all, but believe me, retirement can be fun if you keep busy. Again, congratulations!
boom....I saw one of the recent "Top Gear" segments where Clarkson absolutely trashed the BMW GT wagon. For all intents and purposes, he said it was good at absolutely nothing. Pretty harsh.
Was that the BMW wagon that couldn't even make it up a grass hill while the Range Rover went up right next to it?
We do an event every quarter for our customers. In the winter we take them ice racing (yes, with their cars). In the spring we do a special event like rafting. Yeah, I'm not so sure that we know all the details of the story.
Does the $66k that she allegedly paid for the car include the interest costs over the 8 years, and if so then that would be normal if it's a 8 or 9 % apr loan on . Was he upsoide down on her Mazda3?
So the main thing is that she paid a new price for a demo, and that she overpaid for a protection package.
Yeah the salesperson and manager are at fault for gouging, but the lady has to take some blame too like you said.
Congrats on your retirement! I can guarantee you that you won't miss the grinders and the miserable ones. I don't since being off the floor and on the internet driving traffic in.
Please share more stories since the rest of us ran out of them.
Wow, what a grinder. Not only rude but also irrespectful of the time given to him. Don't you guys take immediate depsoits once a deal is made, and before the customer goes to the box?
Consequences for the lady? According to the report, she is "intellectually disabled."
I don't want to defend the dealership, but what many are asking is when did she become "intellectually disabled"?
When she realized she's buying a car instead of 4 tires? When she realized she's on fixed income and won't be able to afford the payments? During the test drive? During the many opportunities she had to say no and not sign paperwork? During the time she realized she couldn't keep up with payments? (Few weeks/months after the fact) During her research into pricing after the fact? During her ability to find a consumer proetction agency and file a complaint with them?
Yes, the dealership should be fined but she needs to take some responsiblity too.
wonder if it was self financed? ANd I have no idea what the laws are like in Canada.
but, for the few details given, why not just stop making payments, and give the car back to the dealer?
not like there is much downside to declairing BK or having a repo on your record, when you are on disability and public assistance!
more and more, it sounds like the dealership should just appologize, try to weasle out of the fine, and just take the damn car back and make the women hole. How hard can it be to swap the 6 for an old 3?
Gotta figure that is better than the flood of bad publicity and potential fines.
Talk about news out of the blue! Congratulations on your new life adventure.
You'll wonder how you ever were able to squeeze in 8 (12 in your case) hours a day working with all there is to do.
I hate to say this but I now have adverse feelings toward certain groups of people that I never thought I would have. This isn't normally me. When you said the above statement I thought you were talking about older bald(ing) guys and it got me going. :surprise:
Good luck and best wishes in your retirement. I am sure you were one of the really good salespeople out there...not like Moe.
Take your time. I kind of retired last January. Had about 6 weeks without work, but still wanted to be involved in the business. It was too much free time. Now I work less...most days I go in around 10 and leave at 3, and I just do what I want to do which is the buying...and I love it. Like you, I wanted to spend time on other things, enjoy my new car, play more tennis, go to more plays, go for walks with the dog, meet my friends more often.
It was a shock at first so see if you are OK going cold turkey. Otherwise you might want to go back to work but on a par-time basis.
Good luck and enjoy life, you definitely deserve it.
Wow, Isell!! Congrats. What a quick change in status! Had you been thinking about this for a while?
Do you have some plans for retirement? Best advice I've ever heard is to plan one big thing for yourself very shortly after retirement - a nice trip maybe, something you have always wanted to do or a place you have always wanted to go. When you get back, you will have mentally "switched gears" (er - bad analogy for an ex-car salesman??) and will have entered full retirement mode.
At first it will seem a little strange getting up in the morning with no place to go, but pretty soon no doubt your life will be so full of activities you won't remember how you ever found time to work.
Incidentally, does this mean there are almost NO actual salespeople in this forum anymore? Boomcheck is a salesguy, right? Anyone else?
Anyway, all best to you as you start this new phase of life. May it be joyfully rewarding, personally enriching, and full of new adventures.

I hate to say this but I now have adverse feelings toward certain groups of people that I never thought I would have. This isn't normally me.
When you said the above statement I thought you were talking about older bald(ing) guys and it got me going. :surprise:
Enjoy your well deserved retirement, Craig

You mean he wasn't? :P
Actually that realizing you were becoming that wasn't you was a good sign it was time to get out.

While technically true its value is the same as a used one with 6K miles.
Sounds like she made a lot of smart moves after tthe purchase.
Could very well have been given advice and proceeded from there.

Stay busy, have fun and keep posting. Don't change your handle -- not many of us have 12K+ posts.
Congratulations!
