Do you mean that you would send me a copy of the revised procedure manual but you wouldn't send me a cap or a T-shirt? No thanks. You would just raise my dues to cover the cost of the manual. ;)

You would just raise my dues ...

You need to understand that it's getting more expensive every day to push electrons around so something has to give. We're raising dues by 15% this year but the procedure manual remains gratis. :)

I don't understand why you haven't received your cap and tee shirt. We shipped them months ago. :P

I had to find out about the holes in the Silver Genesis (post 54182).

    image

I just called the junk yard in Ruckersville Virginia and was told that this was a “test crash car” by the insurance institute. The holes on the right side are from where the cameras were mounted during the filming of the test.

That Cabernet Red Pearl Genesis was also a “test crash car”. The guy at the yard said their place is about 2 miles from where the tests were conducted.

I don’t know about you guys but I’ll sleep better tonight having gotten this info. I should have asked them this question when I ordered my rims. :confuse:

totally agree with you there. That big a car payment takes a real bite out of the average family's income.

bianca....I've been preaching this to my son. This is also the reason I've been letting him "use" my Accord. I'm trying to keep him out of debt straight out of college. I hear some folks tell me they have a car payment that approximates my house payment. I really, REALLY don't get that.

If you've got a car that you have the title to, you use that as part of paying for your car up front. Yeah, I think I've been extremely generous to my son. But, I also try to use that as a lesson of how if he comes out early in his life with the goal of staying debt free (something that's extremely difficult in our society), he'll put a lot more money in his pocket over a period of time.

I've heard "isell" state over and over again how a person comes into his store and decides they just can't do without leather, upgraded stereo, etc.....even though it puts them way over their car budget (if they even have a car budget).

Cars today come pretty well loaded. They've got power windows an locks. They've got A/C. They've got cruise control. How much more is really needed? I'm not one to talk as I usually get the very top of the line when I buy my cars. But, I've only been able to do that because I drove what could be kindly considered "junk cars" for many years in my youth.

Geez....now I'm starting to sound like an old "geezer".

Man, you would not believe the radio commercial I just heard on 84 WHAS AM, our local news/talk radio station.

Womans voice: "WoW, you've got a small one."
Man: "Thanks, I like them small. Bob's got a small one too."
Woman:" It's cute. It's so tiny I bet you could put it anywhere"
Man: "Sure can, I can put it into the tightest places it's so small"

Am I hallucinating or did I hear what I thought I just heard?

After a few more sexual suggestive comments comes the announcer: "Yes, Louisville has a brand new Mini dealer.. come in to see our great prices on the Mini Cooper"

This is being broadcast as I am taking my daughter and her friend to school in the morning. I find it difficult to believe the disgusting sexual innuendo in this radio commercial would help Mini sell any cars. What were those idiots thinking?

MSN Autos announces the 10 most boring cars:

    1.Lexus RX
    2. Volvo C70
    3. Nissan Versa
    4. Toyota Avalon
    5. Chrysler Town & Country
    6. Mercury Milan
    7. Honda Pilot
    8. Chevorlet Impala
    9. Subaru Forester
    10. Kia Sorento

Like the Honda Pilot which was highly recommended by experts and customers alike, this list is based solely on styling. It was reported that many on the list had features which made the cars both safe and reliable.

You should call the dealership owner and complain. That is disgusting. That is definitely taking the suggestive too far. I'm surprised that the FCC didn't think it was a bit of a stretch. I can't imagine that the commercial will be broadcast for very long. It slaps decentency in the face of all listeners. Even those male enhancement commercials don't go that far. I'm sure that you were embarrassed in front of your daughter and her friend. I would have been.

    Jipster--

The advertiser has now--inadvertently or not--presented us with a wonderful euphemism for male sexual equipment on the smallish side--not that I condone their actions.

Now when confronted by a particularly obnoxious guy we should all be uttering "what a mini cooper"! It sounds much more sophisticated than "tool" or whatever other word of the moment is being used by the hep cats.

ah, that doesn't bother me. Kind of like a lot of the fly-over stuff in "kids" movies like Shreck.

The kids don't have any idea what the double entendres mean, and if they do, it means they are older and riding the school bus, which best as I can tell, is more of a breeding ground for perversion and filthy languae than your average prison!

And if my younster asked what the commercial was referring to, just say a mini cooper because it is a real small car that fits into little parking spots.

Hey, just because you have a dirty mind, doesn't mean that everyone does!

Lol, I was going to say the same thing to jipster and richard.

The radio ad didn't say anything sexual. I personally thing the ad is funny. Why is something that's small and fits into tight spaces have to be automatically sexual to some listeners?

At least the ad worked and made you remember. :P

I have 2 acres of land we don't use on the lower part of the property. It was lumbered out and left with stumps and tree tops galore.
I request a price for cleanup and get in the $5K range. So I price machinery.

For about the same price I can buy the dozer and run it whenever I want then sell it when finished. Since I'm fairly knowledgeable about undercarriage, hydraulics, etc I decided to give it a whirl with this one on ebay.
    link title

I go to the place with cash in hand. Secretary leads me out to the owner. I said what will it take to buy this dozer right now.
He says he wants to let it run out and see what he gets. I said "you mean have your buddy and you bump the price to oblivion then relist it next week?"

He says we don't do that. However, we have lots of ended bids that garner no response from the hi bidder come pay up time. OK Maybe this guy is legit.

While I'm standing there, cash in hand he gets a call on the cell phone and walks away to talk to a guy that simply dialed a phone and probably can't even drive a 40 thousand pound behemoth.

I left kind of disgruntled. Why ignore cash and take a call from a person who may or may not be able to afford a big mac?

I'll place one bid with 30 seconds to go if it stays near where it is now.

Salesguys with zero investment in the product being sold want to sell right now. Owners of the product are very different. Confusing? Yes.

Not sure about the BMW GT, but when I recently visited my old Honda dealer where I used to work and spoke with the salesguys and my old sales manager, they all said the Crosstour was not a big hit, not selling anywhere near what Honda hoped for. I personally think that its overpriced and ugly.

That's just how some sellers are. We were talking about this on another Edmunds forun (classic cars/project cars) and sometimes it's amazing how sellers will turn away a buyer with cash in hand ready to buy now, and take a chance of being stuck with their item for much much longer. That is unless you offered him half price of what he listed it for :P

Since its an auction with 6+ hours to go, he will wait it out. With no reserve it will sell. Bid only what you think its worth then relax.
  • mako1amako1a Member Posts: 1,855
I didn't make any offer. Showed him the ebay printout and asked what I could buy it for now.
I don't make a habit of carrying 6 large with me. Just was transferring from one account to a small checking acct. Depositing cash avoids a 2 day wait to clear since the other bank is right across the street.

I see. Well maybe he likes being in the parking lot business more than selling business. You know, like having his inventory parked forever because he ignores buyers in front of him. lol

Maybe like you said, wait until the auction is almost done and then put in a bid.

Hard to say what it's worth. They can fluctuate by thousands.
(No Edmunds Listings even if you wear your t shirt)
If it had a ripper attachment I would be willing to go much more. Used rippers go for 3 to 4 thousand bucks and those ripper equipped machines are quickly bought up.

Wifey says I need a hobby and she likes seeing me spin the zero turn.

Maybe I'll get a hungry man dinner when she sees me coming off that big boy.

Here's the honest to goodness truth. My neighbor has a bucket truck. I asked him to put up my new Ham Radio antenna. So far he hasn't found time. In talking, he expressed an interest in having a dozer.
If I get this dozer I know he'll be over and I can bust his chops about not getting around to my antenna. That in itself would make it worth the effort.

It's all of the "fly-over stuff" being accepted that continues to destroy the moral fiber of our country. The car ad is just one more example. I disagree that children don't have any idea of what the double entendres mean. Just visit a first grade classroom and see for yourself.

It's interesting to note that old television shows such as "I Love Lucy" were hysterically funny, but contained no foul language or suggestive comments. There were also very creative commercials that were entertaining and in good taste. IMHO, we have lost a good measure of our manners, gentility, and civilized behavior in today's society. I don't mean to sound prudish because I like a good joke as well as anyone. I just think that the time, place, and participants need to be considered, especially if children or ladies are present.

I realize that you and Boom are a bit younger than my generation. Our perspectives may be different. I'm not putting down the younger generation; I'm just saying that our perspectives may be different because of the age in which we were reared. Some things just rub me the wrong way. That radio commercial was one of them.

I'm more or less with you on this one.

In the old days they went way over the other way. Try looking at an early 60s or earlier TV and they don't even show someone actually eating. If they are at the dinner table they'll be shuffling things around and talking but you'll never see someone actually put something in their mouth.

Now they show ads that say "seek medical attention for an erection that lasts longer than four hours" at times when 8 year olds have access to the set. It's not like these are limited to more mature audience times. The first time I saw one of those it was a Super Bowl.

Somewhere there has to be a middle ground.

You can interpret the ad anyway you want sexual or not, but there is no sexual content in it. Lets not get carried away and assume everything has to be sexual by default and assume that kids automatically think the same way. If kids understand it, then it means they're old enough to get it as a joke. :P

I will agree with you on this one too. Just look at what is on some of the shows these days. Compare that with the fact that the first episode of "Leave it to Beaver" Almost didn't make it on air because one scene had Wally and the Beaver in the bathroom talking as they were washing up and they showed a toilet.

Geez....now I'm starting to sound like an old "geezer".

I think I must be about the same age as you - so that makes me an old geezerette!

I hear some folks tell me they have a car payment that approximates my house payment. I really, REALLY don't get that.

Well, depends how long you've lived in your house! I've been here so long, and paid off so much in advance, my actual house payment now (not counting the taxes and insurance part of it) is somewhere between $500 - $600. That would be high for a car payment, but not ridiculously out of reach for many people.

The very first car I bought, a used Pinto that I bought in 1972, had a car payment of $60 a month. I rounded it up to $80, then to $100, to pay it off early. The note was for 3 years and I think I paid it off in 2. Remember feeling very, very relieved to have it paid for.

Then, debt-free, I went to grad school, finished grad school, and sold the car for $1,000 to go to Europe for 2 months. That trip was probably the best $1,000 I ever spent. Changed my whole life, as I then decided to go into a career that involved travel and living overseas. I retired from that career about 5 years ago. So that paid-for Pinto ended up being a very, very good investment.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
That is the first time I've ever seen Pinto and investment in the same sentence. And a good one it was!

Don't care much for Mandy's show, nor Francine's... God rest her soul. I liked John Ziegler, till he made sexual comments about a local television reporters private grooming habits on the air, and got fired. He dated this female reporter for a couple months, got upset when she dumped him, then used his on air position as a radio personality to humiliate and make fun of her. She sued. Unfortunately she lost.

Every year the entertainment industry pushes a little further into the boundaries of what is acceptable. There is a time and place for such "potty" humor, this wasn't one of them. This Mini dealership used poor judgment in airing this, "oh, we were talking about the mini cooper being small... not your private parts" commercial.

84 AM WHAS has a pretty strong signal heard over many states, tune in tomorrow around 7:20 a.m, and later, and you may get a better understanding of what I'm talking about. I think it's a bit more graphic than how I described. Reminded me a lot of those stupid "Big Bufford" commercials that aired several years ago.... oh, I'm sure they were just talking about the big meaty hamburger and not something else. :surprise:

sister of a friend is looking to replace her again CRV, and seems set to stay with Honda. Mentioned a Fit or Civic (budget is an issue). I highly recommended the Civic, as she has a longish highway commute into NYC (bronx), and I don't think the fit will be that good of an idea for that!

so, just starting the initial fact finding. Time to dust off RWTIV, as soon as I find out what year the CRV is.

This is a little long (no sexual innuendo intended) but it is a sales story, so here we go:

The Mazda dealership in Orangeville may have given new meaning to the automaker’s slogan of “zoom, zoom, zoom” for motorist Madeline Leonard.

Leonard walked into the dealership wanting to replace the tires on her 2004 car.

By the time she left she was on the hook for a spiffy, black 2010 Mazda6 sedan at the eye-popping price of almost $66,000, after taxes and the value of her trade-in vehicle.

That’s $25,000 more than she should have paid, according to Ontario’s auto regulator.

She says “Moe,” the salesman, talked fast. The numbers whizzed by and before she knew it she had bought the 2010 model.

“I was overwhelmed and confused and I soon felt like I had been mistreated,” the 56-year-old woman said in an interview from her small, subsidized apartment in the town 85 km northwest of Toronto.

The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, which regulates new and used car dealers, took action after she complained. Its investigation found she should have paid about $41,000 for the vehicle — which wasn’t even new.

“In my eight years here, I haven’t seen a case like this,” said Carey Smith, the regulator’s director of investigations. “The deal was way over the top regarding pricing.”

Smith has charged Mazda of Orangeville and two senior employees with breaching Ontario legislation that protects consumers. The dealership could face a fine of up to $250,000 if found guilty.

Kien Trung, business manager at Mazda of Orangeville and one of the employees facing charges, said he did not treat Leonard improperly or make any big profits in the deal in late December.

“We didn’t do anything wrong in the case of this transaction,” said Trung. “We made a little bit of money on the deal. I guess she was not happy with it.”

In promotional messages, the dealership says it treats customers “with dignity and respect.”

But Smith said in Leonard’s case, the store and two employees used several tactics to unfairly jack up the price.

“They put a list price of a new vehicle on the model but it was a demonstrator that the dealer used with about 6,000 kilometres on it,” he noted.

Mazda Canada lists the base price of the new sedan at $39,969 on its national website, but the dealership allegedly posted a sticker of $45,846 on the car.

Smith said the salesmen also billed Leonard, who is intellectually disabled, about $4,500 for a “protection package” that included fabric guarding, rust and sound proofing and window etching. Other dealers charge about a third of that for the same items, he said.

Furthermore, Smith said Leonard, who is unemployed, should not have qualified for a loan from the dealer because her monthly income including a disability pension is less than $2,000.

But Smith added that didn’t stop the two employees from offering an eight-year loan that will result in about $16,000 in financing costs for her, including a final balloon payment of $7,000.

Mazda of Orangeville says in a promotional message for phone callers that owning “your dream vehicle might be easier than you think.” The message goes on: “If you are a great person with not-so-good credit, we have you in mind.”

Leonard said she originally came to the store to replace the tires on her 2004 Mazda3 and didn’t even want to buy a car.

“I wished I had never walked into the place,” she said. “I’ve had a lot of trouble keeping up with these payments. The stress has been terrible.”

Leonard described the salesman at the dealership as “slick” and the process mesmerized her. But after signing a contract and driving the vehicle away, she checked prices at other Mazda outlets.

“The differences were shocking,” she said. “I felt very disappointed how I was treated.”

The regulator charged the dealership; Trung, 38, of Vaughan; and sales manager Mohammed (Moe) Shaikh, 46, of Mississauga with “engaging in unfair practice by making an unconscionable representation,” contrary to the provincial Consumer Protection Act.

Trung said the defendants will plead not guilty when they appear in court this month.

Under the act, the employees could receive up to $100,000 each and/or two years less a day in jail if found guilty. The defendants could also be liable for damages to Leonard.

The regulator could also revoke the registrations of the dealerships and salesmen.

“Dealers tell me there is nothing wrong with making money but the law says there is something wrong if you take advantage of someone,” Smith said.

Mazda Canada said it would not decide on any action involving the dealership until a court rules on the charges.

“Obviously we expect our dealers and staff to operate professionally,” said spokesman Greg Young. “We’ll see what the (court) determination is.”

Mazda of Orangeville has also popped up on the radar screen of the Better Business Bureau of Mid-Western and Central Ontario.

Although the dealership is not a member, the bureau has received six complaints and issued a D+ rating on a scale from A+ to F since January 2008.

“It speaks for itself,” said a bureau official.

That bit about "nothing wrong with making money" seems to be the fall-back line. That and "profit is not a dirty word".

I'll say it again "the car biz didn't get the reputation it has because they sell their wares like refrigerator salesman sell theirs".

I will admit that the car biz has gotten a lot better, at least it seems that way the last 3 times I bought ('05,'06 and '09) but then the bad apples do it again to the guys that are trying to do it right.
