I'm not a salesperson, but I don't think I would have offered to replace the clear bra... I think you could take it off and leave it off without any issues. There might be a line of dirt caught around its edges, but that would probably buff off with some polishing compound.

It's nice to hear that your dealership actually does a safety inspection and cosmetic work on their used cars. I see a lot that look like they went straight from the rental fleet to the dealer's lot!

jipster....I ran into Elaine while I was at a restaurant...eating out with a group of friends. Funny thing, she was sitting a couple tables away from me. I saw her when I walked in, but kind of tried to not notice her or make eye contact. But, she noticed me.

She was with some other guy "friend". As she was leaving, she came over and plopped herself at our table. We hadn't seen each other in quite some time. We exchanged pleasantries....you know..."you look good...you look good, too...where you living?...what are you doing?" That kind of stuff. She kind of left her "date" standing there twiddling his thumbs, after a brief introduction (no attempt by her, or me, to tell him how we knew each other).

She seemed "tame" and I remember thinking to myself..."Elaine's finally got her act together". She mentioned she was working at the local Datsun dealer and dropped a bunch of her biz cards on our table. Then, asked if I knew of anyone who was in the market, to have them visit her. That's when I told her that I was looking at "Z"s.

2nd part of your question, when I bought my 4Runner a few years ago, I actually hit it off with my sales lady. The Toyota dealership's owner was good friends with my late Father. I grew up with the owner's daughter (who runs his dealerships, now). When I called the daughter telling her I was looking for a Toyota, she matched me up with the salesperson stating "you two will hit it off". She was right.

She's a great human being. We went out for a few months, but her hours were brutal and eventually did us in (give you sales people credit....that's a tough gig). We'd make plans to go out. More often than not, she would be an hour, two hours (sometimes more) late because she had a sale that took longer than expected....or a late customer. That was on top of her working on most of her days/nights off. She was one of the sales "super stars" at the dealership, though.

Great lady...naturally pretty girl...she's still selling Toyotas. I've sent more than a few sales her way. Every once in a while, she'll send me a bottle, or a $100 bill for the references with a nice note. Every time I go in for an oil change, she's quick to come up and give me a big hug and a "wet one".

I won't say she uses "sex" to sell, She's just got a very non-threatening, genuine personableness about her. She puts every person she meets at ease. And, she genuinely loves people and selling cars. She never once complained about her work. She really just loves life.

Funny thing, she's got a 13-14 year old F-150 that she's been driving for years. It's pretty ratty. She refuses to get rid of it because she says it fits her....like an old friend. The dealership makes her park it way in the back when she works.

I asked her once what her "closing" line was...she said she didn't have one. But, what did it with me (even when she wasn't closing me for anything)...She'd sincerely ask..."do you feel good about this? Because if you don't feel good about it, I don't want you to do it". Because of her personality, you had to say yes, because she made you feel good about everything. And, I was a "mini" commission for her.

No, I don’t think you should presume that.

So then I should presume dealer 'A' lied to me when he told me that that was his best price?

How do you know what dealer 'A' will do until you give him a chance to match or do better?

Well I had asked for his best price, if he can do better I didn't get his best price.

This only happened to me once in 22 years. I had never met, nor traded with man before. He came rolling up with a year old Corvette convertible and wanted the same in current year. A couple days later upon deliver he asked me a question. "Did you make enough money"? At first, I was stunned and thought he was being sarcastic. I very indifferent manner I replied that yes the deal was indeed fine. I thought he was being a well smart...you get it. Then he spoke again". If you are not comfortable with the numbers and need more profit, we can work the numbers again. It floored me, he was for real. I thanked him and told him that everything was fine and we continued to chat at ease. He became a great customer and friend.

Generally speaking, will a more attractive salesperson do better in sales?

No, I don't think so. The best guys in sales that I've seen are not "attractive". This is definitely just one man's opinion and experience. Psycho sales guy can be termed attractive. I know a lot of woman (and men) find him attractive. He was the best at our dealership. But I don't think that that had anything to do with how he looked. I think it had everything to do with the fact that he's a psychopathic salesperson that shoved people out of the way to meet people.

I think that's all I got on that. I don't think that it helps all that much. If you got it, work it, but who knows.

    -Moo

Edit: Ok, I keep thinking of other things to post here. My best customers ARE typically women. I'll toot my own horn here. I know that some folks find me attractive. I act as professional as possible, but I am very nice. Women are typically very comfortable with me and find it to be an easy transaction. I don't know if that is using your looks to sell, but it makes the process easier when you're not a Guido or chain smoking lunatic with booze on their breath trying to sell you on everything. Ok, I'm done now.

I think 'personable' is likely to do better than attractive, unless the customer gets to choose 'their' salesperson from a line-up of hopefuls, in which case the attractive one will do better just by weight of numbers.

However, as I've never heard of salespeople getting their 'ups' by that method, I think the one with the best people skills will have the best results. Of course, it doesn't matter how personable you are if you have halitosis, B.O. and look as though you live in a dumpster. Those guys need to stick to the phone and the keyboard!

    moo....you've caught me on a slow day/week.

I've been on the road so much recently, it's good just to do "clean up" work this week.

I don't imagine you'll hear many more things out of me until Thanksgiving.

Good luck buyers and good selling to sales people.

She puts every person she meets at ease.

I'm not in the "biz", but I would think that this would be the most important quality for a salesperson to have. When I have shopped cars in the past, this type of salesperson was the one who would usually get my business. I like to "cherry pick" my salespeople, and having a laid back, genuine person who enjoys conversing with people makes it much easier for me to pull the trigger on a good deal.

Matter of fact, I think Edmunds should sponsor a "get together" for those who post here all the time (hint-hint), so we can meet.

I made a similar suggestion....and some of the edmunds folks thought it would be a good idea but I never heard anything further....

I think we both know that until a dealer feels he is going to lose a sale he’s not going to give you his BEST price. Now if you buy the next day he might be a little hungrier. If you want to call this a lie, I won’t argue with you but it’s the way that biz works.

Well I had asked for his best price, if he can do better I didn't get his best price.

    Same as above.

BTW, to avoid this type of back and forth negotiating, the last car I bought I had a price that I wanted and I got that price.

LOL... well, I probably won't be in the market for another 2 or 3 years. Maybe, for my families next minivan purchase, I'll give you and Isell a ring. The most laid back & genuine salesperson will get the "mini". :)

but it’s the way that biz works.

I know it's the way the game is played, but it feeds all this negativity that each side (at times) has for the other.

BTW, to avoid this type of back and forth negotiating, the last car I bought I had a price that I wanted and I got that price.

I do that too, do my research determine a price, first dealership that gets to or under that price gets the sale. The only reason I would try another dealer is either 1.) the first didn't have the car I wanted or B.) the dealer wouldn't get to my price.

Is there a reason why sales people always seems to be scrambling at the end of the month to make a sale so that they can ‘make their numbers’ and get that ‘bonus’? I would think that if you didn’t turn away doable deals on the 1 st, 7 th, 13 th, 18 th, etc., this give-away on the last day of the month wouldn’t exist.

The real reason is that salespeople (and sales managers) are optimists. They'll turn down what might be a lower-priced sale with the confidence that the next customer to walk up will buy at a higher price, and that enough people will do this that they don't have to worry about making their number; they will make their number.

One of the reasons salespeople get a bad reputation is that you need to develop this kind of self-confidence; and when it goes bad, it turns into either smarm, sleaze or pushiness. And when they're right, sometimes arrogance. But I digress...

She puts every person she meets at ease.

I agree with that too that it is one of the most important qualities. When I'm relaxed, easy going, and not stressed out I sell like crazy.

    When I'm stressing cause I need a deal I can't sell squat.

    Example in a story:

A family comes in towards end of the month, and are looking at used and new cars. I had over 10 cars out that month, met my sales target, so I'm relaxed. They seem very closed off at first with "We're just looking"

I said no prob, if you have any questions let me know, here's some cars on sale, blah blah blah.

They warmed up to me because I was laid back, and to make a long story short we're negotiating on a new Civic.

I give them a big discount and tell them:

"look guys, I won't be going back and forth and haggling over $50 because I made my target for the month, I'm tired, and I have a hangover"

they laughed and I gave them the price which they liked and ended up buying the car in one shot.

I like reading your stories as I just recently bought a 4Runner and in that mindset. But someone mentioned the profiling and this touched off a very distinct memory for me. I was pregnant with my son who is now nine, decided to trade in a Celica for a 4Runner (yes, I like them). The dealership would not give me the time of day because I was pregnant. I was so discouraged I went to Ford where they treated me great, bought a loaded Ford Explorer and later traded that in (one guess). The point is, we both lost. I wanted the 4Runner, they should have wanted the sale. Thought I needed my husband, even though I run the finances and make more. Yes that was years back but just so you know, that profiling is not always accurate. I still remember the amazement I felt getting back in my Celica and leaving the dealership.

For anyone who is late to the program follow the links below to catch up.

    Here is Part I

    Here is Part II

When we last left the story I was preparing a counter offer for the brother to take to the sister.

My idea was to load him down with so much pricing info that she either accepts our offer or just leaves me alone. At this point either one is acceptable.

I print out the Edmunds TMV price for this car and the KBB value on trade in, private party and retail. We are thousands of dollars below all of that. Then I print out all oft he 2003 Z4s within 30 or so miles of our location. There are not many of them but we are priced lower with fewer miles then any of the others.

Carmax has the exact same car as ours down to the color but with 44,xxx miles and they are asking nearly a thousand dollars more.

I call up the sister tell her what I am doing and she says ok she will look over it all when her brother gets back.

I counter with 23,500 and we are not paying for anything to do with the clear bra.

About a half our later the sister calls me back.

She doesn't care she is only going to pay 23,000 for the Z4 and she wants the clear bra fixed. She wants the car today and if we won't sell it to her today then she does not want it.

Right when she called I was heading out the door to a clients office to have her sign some papers for the new car they are getting. I ask the Sister to wait for a minute as I am late for an appointment and I transfer her to our used car manager.

I leave to go to my appointment and wish our used car manager good luck.

I come back about 45 minutes later and ask what happend.

She agreed to the 23,000 and fixing the clear bra.

I laugh and call her weak but I understand her thought. She is scared of that car if it goes to auction and we don't want to winter it at the dealership so better a break even deal then a loss at the auction.

She is supposed to come by that evening to leave a deposit and fill out a credit application.

She comes in around 7:00 to fill out the credit app. The problem is she won't sign it. She won't sign anything or leave a deposit untill she finds out how much warranty is left on the car. I had called and checked on this about a week ago and it has 9 months of warranty left. That is not good enough for her though. She wants to talk to the BMW dealership directly and she won't sign anything till she does.

The BMW dealership service department is of course closed now and the sales depatment can't or won't look this up. I used to know a bunch of people down there but the entire sales department of the local BMW/Mercedes/MINI dealerships have been fired.

Well now the problem is that we can't submit a credit app without having it signed. We won't normaly submit an app without a deposit but we really can't submit one without a signature.

10 more minutes of arguing and she finaly agrees to sign the credit app.

She leaves finally and we all call it a night.

Part four will either be later tonight or tomorrow morning depending on how much Tequila I drink.

Have any of you all seen this year's Saturday Night Live telecasts? Yeah, I know they aren't always very tolerable, but there has been one recurring skit this year that always makes me laugh! The names of these skits always begin with "2 A-holes...", such as "2 A-holes at the Travel Agency". From rover's stories, that spoiled sister reminds me of the girl in those SNL skits!

I'm hoping they write an episode at a car dealership. Here is one possibility:

    Couple walk into a dealership.
Man: "Babe, I'm gonna buy you a sweet M5."
Girl: (Whining) "Not again. I want a convertible."
Man (to sales guy): "Show me your best convertible."
Girl: "I want light teal green..."
Sales Guy: "I don't know if we have..."
Girl: "... with DVD and a Starbucks coffee maker."

I don't disagree that most of the good sales people do make their numbers. However, form what I have been told over the years by guys in the biz, used to be in the biz and from reading what the guys in the biz say on these forums, they only hit their targets by the great-give-aways at the end of the month.

Maybe some or all of these people aren't being honest about how they do it.

Right. But I bet if you asked them on the 4th "Are you going to make your quota without having to push on the 28th", they'd say "Oh, definitely."

And in many cases, it's probably the sales manager who's also turning down what might be a better deal, knowing, for instance, that the dealership quota might be easily met, and not particularly caring about individual quotas.

But self-confidence in one's abilities is a trait all good salespeople share. Because if you don't have that, there are plenty of easier jobs out there - like nuclear science or being a doctor or something.

    OK .. I'm in

Since I live in LA .. I'm gonna drive (only @ 3.5-4hr drive)

Anyone want a lift from my neck of the woods?

Shall we do it b4 or after the X mas or New Yr's holiday?

We'll probably have to do it over a weekend .. or will you sales guys miss too many "up" & phone pops to be able to go?

Lastly, what hotel .. my suggestion would be Venetian or Planet Hollywood (a STARWOOD SPG hotel that take points!)

It only has 40K miles and your wife likes it so why get rid of it? Unless its a :lemon: and you are spending way to much time/money/effort to keep it running why trade?Fiscally its not that great of an ideal.

Actually the only thing I have ever done to it is oil changes and wiper blades. It's an '02 Santa Fe and she does love the thing.

You are probably right - if she likes it that much I should probably leave well enough alone. I just don't like to keep a vehicle until it does start to need repairs.

I think I'll just throw her the ball and let her start dribbling it when she is ready and just butt out.

"I hate you and don't want to sell you a car"

"Lol! If only people were so honest. That's a weird situation though. It's hard to believe that a store would only keep 1 salesman on the floor."

Yeah, it does seem odd. I peeked in the window and didn't see any other humans inside.

It's a small dealership, but you would think they would sell more cars if they were a little more agressive.

(I can't believe I said that about a car sales place.) :surprise:

My guess is that you were profiled as someone who was at the dealer to just browse around, which is exactly what you were.

Well...if that's what I was profiled at, they were wrong.

I was at the dealership to make an appointment for a test drive for when the wife got out of work.

Besides this particular dealership is well known for not providing any extra keys. :P

Part four of the BMW saga.

Here is part three with links to part one and two.

Now I was not a witness to the first part of this section as it happend on my day off.

I come in around 12:30 to deliver a car for the person that I had sign paperwork the night before. They couldn't take physical delivery of the car the day before but I had them sign all of the paperwork so that it would count for the end of the month.

I walk into the dealership and I can tell that something strange, disturbing, bad or just plain weird happend.

I walk into our Used car manager/F&I mangers office and there are three people in there.

Our Used car manager/F&I Manager our GM/SM and the used car director for our entire autogroup. They are all in there and they all look very upset.

    ME: Uhhh what happend????

F&I: We are gonna blow the deal on the Z4 that lady is crazy.

And OMG it is so busy here I will finish this at home.
  • corvettecorvette Member Posts: 11,306
I was about to make a prediction--I don't think it's going to go this way anymore, but it would have been amusing if:

Brother thinks about the way the Z4 drove, sleeps on it, decides he likes it, remembers what a pain his sister has been for the past xx years, and offers you the asking price to sell it out from under the difficult sister. ;)
  • goldenskygoldensky Member Posts: 9
And you would have been absolutely right! A pregnant woman in a business suit is likely trading her Celica for a 4Runner to better accommodate a baby seat. The decision's been made, just a matter of signing the paperwork.
