OK, for all you tightwads out there I have a question. We all know that MSRP means suggested retail price. For you guys (and gals) that seems to mean a absurd high price to pay and a MSRP sale is the dealer gouging the customer. You cite the word "suggested." Well, f the dealer adds an addendum to a hot car and cites the word "suggested", what is the difference?

Courtroom shows are my favorite as well. Boston Legal first, Judge Judy second.

I actually wrote a letter to Judge Judy about a verdict where she depreciated a Toyota Supra calling it an "old car worth not much". The plaintiff was in shock and so was I. I told her it was a limited production sports car no longer made with more buyers than sellers thus giving it collector status as well as a price boost.

Putting it (addendum) on a hot car is okay. Putting one on a ice cold to lukewarm car seems like trying to "gouge" the customer. I think it's more an insult to one's intelligence.

A addendum doesn't scare me off though... bring em on!

what goes through your mind when you see someone dressed in clothes

Considering the sad state of most people's bodies, being dressed in clothes is almost always a good idea.

lr...the issue isn't MSRP. The issue is a savvy buyer actualy knows your cost via internet sights like this one.

You can ask whatever you want. What someone will pay is ordinarily a different situation.

I know some cars on the market are "hot". I doubt Lambos, Rolls, Bentleys, Astons, or Ferraris are discounted. Could be wrong....maybe they are. I've neve shopped them so I don't know.

However, even something along the lines of a 750i, an EClass, a Jag XJ/F, are discounted. So, I was trying to put a LAnd Rover in those categories and was surprised that some were selling at MSRP.

I suppose someone who's out of tune to the marketplace, who really doesn't care about the "deal" they can get on a vehicle, probably are happy to pay MSRP. '

However, you have to admit, those folks are few and far between.

I watch Judge Judy and Peoples Court. Use to watch Judge Joe and Judge Mattias... but any more they've become freak shows that just play to people acting like fools. Judge Judy puts the hammer down on any foolishness or showboating.

Of course my favorite shows are usually the ones involving cars, where someone co-signed for a boyfriend, girlfriend, friend, or relative... and has their credit ruined, or make payments on a car they don't have. Or, someone is suppose to make monthly payments to a private seller, stops and doesn't pay after the 3rd month, and whose defense is he/she keeps bothering me for the money... so I decided I wouldn't pay. :lemon:

So far and few between that I have 3 Sports and 4 LR4s to last until August. That represents about a 10-12 day supply of those models. More customers than cars. Almost as bad as more cars than customers.

    Boston Legal first

Absolutely one of the best shows ever produced. Fantastic cast and the only show I ever liked William Schatner in - maybe because he played himself.

That's why the poor stay poor because of stupid financial decision like this and messed up priorities. I wonder if he leased his bling jewellery and cubic zirconia studs in his ear too (not sure if that's what he wore, I'm just assuming)

You got it pretty good boomer. You know your customers! If this is a typical car buyer isell was smart to get out when he could.

I found the episode of Judge Judy. This is unbelievable!

So, you bought a color TV in 1963 to watch a 1939 movie that came out in black and white?

Ah, "Gone With the Wind" was in color.

Different cultures have different approaches to when to be someplace. I am a umpteenth generation American, my wife is Filipino born and raised there. When we have a party my family is always there when we said the party starts (or within a few minutes), My wides family starts arriving 30+ minutes late.

Leasing wheels?!!!!!!!! I've never heard of such a thing.

There is a place called Rimtyme that does that. Its basically rent to own like Rent-a-center.

Well here is the thing, few things sell for MSRP. Most things out there sell for less than MSRP so why should cars be any different?

But what I was in my own weak way - forget market conditions and competition - was if it is not wrong for a consumer to expect less than a suggested price is it wrong for any retailer to charge more than MSRP? Is it a one way or 2 way street?
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
How about this just forget about the MSRP and just run with what the market will bear. What is a fair price? As I said before, few things actually sell for MSRP, most things sell for less so why does it have to be different for cars? Do you see a Best Buy salesperson complaining that they sold that $1000 TV of $850?

OK for the people here who promote selling their cars for MSRP next time they buy any "big ticket" item find out what the MSRP of it is and refuse to pay less.

Wow, not sure if I should laugh or cry for this guy. He's not what I imagined or described but close.

So he had lousy credit and no work for a while and was in debt and got someone to cosign his car loan and then he goes and buys rents himself new rims as a gift for himself on a Malibu of all cars that someone cosgined for him.

Even Bert was laughing at this guy. That's sadly funny.

right...cuz the new HD 3D super slim TVs are being discounted, or when the new iPhone comes out it is being discounted.

Since "few things actually sell for MSRP" why couldn't those few things be 2 RR models that are in short supply?
  • driver100driver100 Member Posts: 32,594
rents himself new rims as a gift for himself on a Malibu of all cars

How would you like to have him come to you as a customer? He has wheels that are worth more than his car......if he actually owned them.

You couldn't make up a story stupider than this. Although I have seen dunber. Like the guy who totalled a brand new $5000 motorcycle that was in his girlfriends name. When asked by Judge Judy why his insurance didn't pay for the repairs he said "Dah, in our state you can ride a motorcycle and you don't gotta have insurance on it!" Like why waste money on something you don't have to have!!!! And, why should I pay for the repairs if I don't own it?

I am only doing this because you insisted, and twisted my arm. :P Incident is an event or happening. Incidence refers to percentages or projections with numbers. Example: The number of incidences projected for this year's flu season is one to one hundred thousand. Do not confuse this word with "instance" which is used to point out examples. Example: Take the new Buick for instance.

Biancar, you are a jewel! I laughed myself silly. When I see the men and women from my retirement community in the grocery store, I wonder why they don't put on long pants and tops with sleeves. I'm sorry but they don't look the same as they did in their twenties. I do wear shorts 90% of the year, only because people say that I have nice looking legs. I may as well give some poor slob a temporary thrill. :P As for the rest of my body, we won't go there.

I've been putting this off all day. I have to eat crow and make a PUBLIC APOLOGY to you. My mother's '62 Buick was NOT an Electra. It was a LeSabre. You won't believe how I discovered it! MY WIFE who cares nothing about cars corrected me. I was telling her about Mother's big tank not having power steering. She told me that I had the model wrong. With great irritation, I asked her how in the hell she knew! She said that when we were dating and then first married, Mother would ask her to drive when they went places together. She also told me that Mother complained because it had no power steering. Mother told her not to mention it to me or my father. Mother also told her that my father was so pleased that he gave her a car in her favorite color combination. She just didn't have the heart to complain.

Dumb me. I still insisted that the car was an Electra. About an hour later, my wife calls me into the den. There on her laptop is a picture of Mother's car. Yep. It was a LeSabre. To add insult to injury, my wife said to me, "You spend all of that time on that car site (Edmunds) and you didn't even know what your mother drove." What a day!

Yes, you are the Buick man. I bow to your knowledge and experience.

You're still wrong about Gone With the Wind. It was filmed in color. :P

OK ‘driver’, I watched it! Please don’t ask me to watch something like this again. I know you need help or you wouldn’t be on this forum :P but please no more of this, OK?

I don’t consider myself as one who knows the best of entertainment but I know this ain’t that. Every time I surf the channels I see a show like this. I just can’t take this type of programming, really. This stuff just can’t be that prevalent. If, by chance, it is I really do feel for the salesmen in the car biz. I wonder how many hours the producers of these shows have to work to find these nitwits.

We have a poster here who has sat and listened to cases and I can only imagine what he has heard, might be why he retired from the bench to devote more time to running around the track. ;)

this because you insisted, and twisted my arm ...

Thanks for stepping up to the plate! It's funny. "Incidences" is one of those words that triggers my "finger nails on the chalkboard" response. One would rarely use the plural of "incidence" which simply means "frequency of occurrence." Your example should read something like "The incidence of the flu is projected to be about one in one hundred thousand."

We now return to our regularly scheduled program. :)

Sorry you didn't like that one. When I was a teenager I used to love going to court and watching. I remember once this guy walked along the street and broke into a car and he stole 35 cents. The judge said there is too much of that kind of crime going on and sentenced him to 60 days in jail. When I walked out I saw some policemen discussing the case and laughing out loud.....that guy got more than a day in jail for every cent he stole.

I had to show it, I didn't want any one to think I could make up that a guy would rent a set of $1500 wheels. Hope that wasn't a relative of yours....ha ha.

I would say unbelievable but I know there are some just as bad on Judge Judy. One episode had a young girl helped her boyfriend take her mother's car for a joy ride. He totaled the car and the girl died. He didn't think he should be responsible for repairs to the car. Guess he thought it was the girlfriends fault.

I am just at a loss after watching that video. I've always contended that first step to financial ruin comes when someone is financially upside down in one car, only to add to the predicament by wanting another car, and adding the financial negative equity to a new car.

I never could understand that. In that situation, you're paying for a car (by adding the payments to another car) that you no longer own. How many people would actually agree to pay for something they don't have possession of....particularly something that you're also paying interest on?

If my son has taken just a few pieces of adivice from his Dad (aside from having a good heart, a strong work ethic, and high character), it is stay out of debt as much as possible.

When I was young, I made the one stupid financial mistake (overpaid for a car, bought more car than I could afford, paid "fees" I shouldn't have, etc, etc) that I've seen here over and over again.... all because I "THOUGHT" I deserved that car (a new 280Z, BTW). I did not.

The guy in the video (who seems to be of the same Italian background as me, I'm sad to say), is a narcisist. He doesn't care about his former girlfriend, her Mother, etc. All he cares about is himself and what he can get for himself (rims? rented? on a Malibu?). He said the car was repo'd. What does he do? He finds a co-signor to get what? Something even more expensive like a Lincoln Navigator.

I'm sure isell, LR, boom, and the rest of the pros see/saw this on a daily basis. Can't afford the car, but come hook or crook, the car is going to be bought.

You should know by now that an apology isn't expected or needed. You have nothing to apologize for!

Actually, a Le Sabre without power steering would be a rare, RARE car that some dealer either got stuck with or had to special order and yeah, that wouldn't be an easy car to steer.

Now, are you SURE the original version of gone With The Wind was filmed in color and not the remake?

Color in 1939? Honestly I don't know one way or the other. It just seems too early for color. ??

Color technology was around for some time before "Gone With the Wind" . "The Wizard of Oz" was in color (mostly) and it came out just before "Gone With the Wind" and "Snow White" came out a few years earlier and it was in color even if it was a cartoon. Color movies of that time were very expensive to produce, but they were made.

"Cupid Angling" is generally accepted as the first full length movie filmed in color, it was made in 1918. IIRC it has been lost.

After watching that video I had to wonder if this was for real or if they stage these shows, make up stories and hire actors?

If this is real, that guy should be locked up somewhere. He is beyond stupid and something tells me his girlfriend and has new wife aren't far behind.

Yeah, a Navagator! If it hasn't been repopped by now, he's probably 8000.00 upside down. He's driving a 10 MPG tank when he should be walking or maybe taking the bus. Walking might do wonders for that gut he carries around.

There were obscure color films dating back to 1918. Gone With The Wind and Wizard Of OZ were the first popular color films, both came out in 1939.

I find the biggest problems in court...this is from my observations....are from drinking and not taking responsibility for ones actions. It's not my fault - stuff just happens!

Exactly! Here's an excellent example- it's another one of my favorites:

A guy is charged with misdemeanor assault. He got in a fight with another guy, and he really cleaned the victim's clock- blacked both eyes- maybe even loosened a tooth, if I remember correctly. When the "victim" takes the stand, he was asked how the fight started. The victim testified:

"Well, I called him on the phone and me and him commences to arguin'. So he said, 'I just oughta whip your a**' So I says 'Well, you just come on over here and whip my a** is you think you're man enough."

I told the "victim" that I didn't see what the problem was; he invited the defendant to come over and whip his a** and that's exactly what the defendant did. I went on to suggest that if he didn't like getting his a** whipped he probably shouldn't ask people to come over and whip it. I ruled that this case was a textbook example of the "Toyota Doctrine": You asked for it- You got it!

I would be a judge for free, I think it would be fun!

It really was fun. Some cases deserved to be treated seriously(and that's exactly how I treated them), but in District Court a large majority of the cases are just ridiculous. The old TV show Night Court is an extremely accurate depiction of what went on during an average day.

Back when I was a very young manager for Sears it wasn't uncommon for me to open the store (auto center) at 7:00 in the morning and lock the door when we closed at 10:00. Then there were the times I couldn't get the ADT alarm to set so I would wait around until midnight for the ADT guy to show up.

I thrived on that at the time.

In the car business, I watched many a hotshot burn out quickly. They would have the early shift 8:30-3:00 but they would wait for a 6:00 appointment that showed up an hour late. The appointment would drive three cars and leave to "go think about it". The salesperson would end up leaving at 9:00 to go home to an unhappy wife.

Or the customer would buy after a two hour grind session. They would finally get the deal done and into finance where the customer would turn out to be a "reader".

At 10:30, the salesperson would leave having earned 100.00 for his mini deal.

In order to be a long term, successful salesperson you really have to work hard but pace yourself too or you won't last long.

Also, your home life can suffer. Not many people have a wife as understanding as I do.

After being in retail all of my life, I thought I had seen it all. I thought I had seen the best and worse in people but I had no idea.
