I saw a "Mr Clean Magic Eraser".

Thanks for the tip...we use them at work and it gets ink off deskes, but never thought of using them at home or in the car. I am adding them to the shopping list and will try them on my "getting dingy" cream color leather seats.

I couldn't find a single thing that would take off the make-up.

Well, at least it wasn't dog - - - -. I have my fingers crossed that that won't happen again.

    Dear Gang:

Thanks for all the kind words, I really appreciate them. We still have another dog, a 14 year old Basenji who is still pretty feisty.

Sweebie will always hold a special place in our hearts. Although we have had to have 3 cats euthanized, Sweebie was the first dog. I have cried a gallon of tears and expect to have the continual, but less frequent, throat lumps that Richard mentioned.

It does help to have a forum like this where we can share. You are scholars and gentlemen (and gentlewomen).

Isell might know. We are currently in the market for a new one. What brand do you guys favor?

What I do not favor is a Boche. It worked great, was very quiet, has a great format for being able to load it, lots of room inside and very tall. The problem was it broke down within a few weeks after the 1 year warranty was up. Cost was $320 to put in a new part. What I really resented was the companies attitude, no sympathy, no meeting half way.

We got an LG the next time around. It was excellent, not as quiet. The only major problem was there wasn't a light on it to tell you the dishes were washed. We had a method of putting a little magnet on the front to remind us that the dishes in it were washed. I strongly recommend making sure there is a light on your dish washer so you know the dishes have been washed.

Currently have a Maytag and it works fine. I am not sure i would buy it, it came with this house. It works OK, but isn't a great design and is fairly noisy.

Use CLR to remove calcium buildup every once in awhile.

Oh, and we like Cascade Complete.

I will respectfully disagree with you. We needed to replace our dishwasher last year and we bought a Bosch from Lowe's. Installation was a bit problematic, but the dishwasher itself is a dream.

The most important factor for us was noise, as our kitchen is next to the family room. Amazing how quiet it is.

The only downside is that the inside is smaller than what was replaced (GE) - I suspect that the noise canceling materials makes the interior dimensions smaller.

    Overall, we're quite pleased.

Just to break in with a car sales story.
If I didn't have any self discipline this is what I would go out and order for myself (2012 6 Series coming in Spring 2011) Another reason I won't order one is because it has a soft convertible roof. Why would they put a hardtop convertible on a 3 Series but a softop on a 6 Series :confuse:

Why don't we go ahead and launch the topic?

Don’t look at me, I don’t want to take this forum off topic.

We are currently in the market for a new one. What brand do you guys favor?

When we redid the kitchen just last January we got a towards the top end Kenmore. It isn’t any better than the mid range GE that was replaced. Both did a good job. To be honest, we’ve never had a bad one as far as the washing part goes. Although when we lived in SC by the time we left, after 5 years, the Maytag was on its third timer. The first was replaced under warranty (8 months) but the third was my dime until I complained and then Maytag refunded the price of the part. That was all I wanted because I installed it (easy 20 minute job).

I said this before when we were on this topic; there are two dishwashers in our house one makes noise but the stainless steel one is pretty quiet. ;)

Like I said, it was a great dishwasher, and was designed extremely well. But the fact it broke down after just one year and the complete lack of interest on the part of Boche (Canada) left me saying I wouldn't buy another one no matter how good they are....even if every survey said they are the best dishwasher you could buy.

Same with our 1995 Volvo. It broke down so many times it had to go to 3 dealers to fix it. Even head office couldn't figure out what it needed. One dealer also said the rear brake pads needed changing and another dealer said the front brake pads needed changing. Volvo makes nice cars but the whole experience just put me off Volvos.

I hope and I am sure your dishwasher will serve you well. And it is basically an excellent product....I was the one who had a problem and I would rather tell people what happened to me just so they do know that could be a problem in the future. We have had dishwashers last 15 to 20 years without a problem, so I don't think a premium product should break down after 12 months. But, that's just me.

We currently have a Sears Kenmore top of the line. It is the worst dishwasher that we have ever owned.

Interesting. I bought a Kenmore Elite with the stainless steel inside back in 02 and it works like a charm. It's made by Whirlpool.

Whats funny is that some of the more expensive (complicated) machines break down more often.

My parents about 20 years ago bought an absolute builder's grade Roper dishwasher. It saw some hard use early on and just keeps going. It looks brand new and still works fine. It probably isn't that energy efficient and I am sure there are better performing machines, but it is so simple there isn't much to break. Once it goes I am sure it will simply be replaced as they have certainly gotten their money out of it.

I agree with you on the Bosch. Ours is almost 5 years old, very quiet, does a great job, and no problems. Knock on wood.

That has been our experience too.

The first time we came across this is when we went on vacation back in the 80’s when we stayed for the first time in a condo unit. We planned on eating breakfast there sometimes since it was right on the ocean and we liked the idea that it had a kitchen so we didn’t have to waste time going out for breakfast like we had to do when we stayed at hotels. We noticed that the dishwasher was pretty much an on and off device with no features to speak of. Mrs. jmonroe took one look at that thing and said, “OH, I wonder how this is going to work out”? It worked just fine but we always rinse the dishes anyway so I don’t know how well they work when they are not rinsed or are left with food to dry on them before putting them in the dishwasher.

I know this, the Kenmore we have now says throw the dishes in there and go with the “smart wash cycle”. When I said, “lets try it and see how it does”. I heard, “you’re not putting food in MY dishwasher. I don’t care how well the soft food disposer is supposed to work”.

I tend to agree with that. The sink disposal unit is best for the food. Asking a dishwasher to be that good is like wanting a race car and a cushy riding car all in one. Not gonna happen.

" We payed big bucks and it didn't clean well"

    Richard, I am SHOCKED!

Our dishwasher is an almost new, top of the line Whirlpool and it works great. You do have to know that my fussy wife cleans off the dishes so well before she puts them in that any dishwasher would probably do as well.

    " It's a DISHWASHER, it's not a garbage disposal"

    I've heard that a lot!
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
You would think that driver would LOVE Bosch. Those German dishwashers really give you feel of the dish! :D

We have a Kenmore dishwasher - mid-grade. It's been fine. Replaced the old builder grade Tappan we had which kept popping the springs that hold the door.

Of course now I have to keep telling people (especially the Mrs) to not let that bottom row of dishes sit there on the open door!

We still have the Tappan range that's a builder's special. After 18 years it's still going. I would like to replace it sometime soon.

I think that I can make you feel better. We bought the Sears appliance package when we remodeled the kitchen three years ago. The two double ovens are wonderful. We do a lot of cooking and both ovens have cooked dsihes to perfection. We also like the refrigerator, no problems. I am disappointed in the Jenn-Air range that we installed in the island. It cooks very unevenly. With what it cost me, I'm not going to replace it. Still, that dishwasher has to go. I might try the Miele. The floor cleaner by Miele is really great. I think that they make good products. Good luck with your remodel; you'll be so happy with it.

That it does, I just don't like it. I would get it on a used car if all else was perfect (my S10 bought used has it). I like the way my car is. Ivory seats, door panels, etc but the carpet is dark. This works out pretty well (except for ball point pen incidents).

Good point. We do the same thing, no food goes into the DW. We have some friends that practically do use their DW as a garbage disposal. Some DWS actually have a built in chopper.

You did thanks. I was second guessing what was a fairly quick decision (for me anyway). Sears beat HD and Lowes price on similar items by quite a bit. Once the remodel is done I'll try and post up some pictures. Everything is on order and I'm starting demo in early February once the cabinets are produced and on the way to my house.

The kitchen is the only room I haven't tackled since being in the house 5 years. It really needs it too, it is very old and dated. It is a small room, I would love to expand it, but no budget for that.

I agree with you on the Bosch.

Two things I just remembered about our Bosch. This was about 8 years ago so thing might have changed.

It didn't have an overflow system so there could be a flood if the water didn't get shut off. I believe they added something so this wouldn't happen.

    and

the Bosch does not really grind up food. It has a screen and that had to be cleaned out. One reason I bought the LG after the Bosch was because the salesman said it would grind up anything you put into it.

I will say, the Bosch did the dishes the best I have ever seen, and if Bosch would have split the cosat of repair I would probably have bought another one.

I have bought two Whirlpools. I bought each one at Lowes. They will beat other prices and they had the one I wanted in stock.

I chose Whirlpool because they bought Maytag; the rest of the kitchen is Maytag Plus, higher lines, from when I did a remodel and rebuild about 9 years ago.

Also Whirlpool is made in the US. Are some of the others? I can point to a Whirlpool plant about 20 miles away and I am not sure what they make besides mixers and blenders for KitchenAide line. I believe they do refrigerators, but I'd have to do some research. We used to have a Whirlpool research center about 5 miles away. So I look at the jobs: who, when, where.

I strongly recommend looking on the website for a company and looking at all the models and the features they have. Going to stores, I often find only certain models. Those in stock sometimes don't have the features I would be willing to pay for and order and wait for a unit to come.

I like being able to get repair help via the internet for a common brand like the Whirlpools. There's one appliance repair website that's really good; real technicians comment on your problems. They also may link to service manuals, etc.

Lowes offered an inexpensive service warranty that piggy-backed onto the manufacturer 1-year warranty for my washer and dryer, IIRC.

Our friends bought a Bosch a few years back. They didn't like it.

No they don't. Go look at post 64347. Back in 1992 they didn't do timers very well. When I went to buy the third one the parts place said they had a problem with them in the era when we got ours. He said he damn near made a living just replacing them alone. He's the one that told me to go after Maytag because they knew they had a problem with them. When he wrote up the third one for me he showed me that the part number had a dash C. He said it was originally an A.

It cleaned as well as any other dishwasher we ever had if it could only remember to tell time.

In hindsight, and before I would have been able you get great advice all of you, yes a big mistake.
Luckily for me, the original DW needed replacement after 5 years or so, and she got the one she wanted to replace it.

I have to agree. We just don't like the idea of putting dishes with food on them in a dishwasher. If we did that with this Kenmore, we would really have a problem. It hardly gets them clean NOW. I don't know why we even use a dishwasher. I'm the pots and pans washer at our house. I may as well go ahead and do the plates, cups, and glaasses.

My mother enjoyed washing dishes. She used the dishwasher as her drying racks. When we sold her house, her appliances were like new. She cleaned her stove and refrigerator every week. She was the Joan Cleaver of the '50's and '60's---without the pearls and heels. :P

We were shocked as well. For years, my wife wanted a Kitchen Aid dishwasher. When we remodeled the kitchen in house #8, she got her wish. It was a big mistake. Perhaps, like some cars, it was made on a Friday or Monday. :D House #9 had a Whirlpool. It was the best yet.

Actually, if you had a good experience with Whirlpool and a bad one with Kitchen Aid you are showing that there is something to Consumer Reports reliability stats. They have Whirlpool at te top and Kitchen Aid in the basement.

Our refrigerator is a Whirlpool and our dishwasher a Kenmore built by Whirlpool.
