Actually, I did have an '02 CR-V that was paid off for the last 2.5 years... Of course, with no payment, my wife got a more expensive car.. But, over those 2.5 years, it still depreciated, and the value of the car wasn't earning any income.
So... if you trade every five years or less, you are always going to have a payment, unless you can pay cash.. and, even then, you have the exact same costs.. depreciation, finance or opportunity costs, etc, etc..
It's really a fallacy that if you pay cash, you don't have a payment..
(truth disclosure: I paid cash for my current used car, and my wife leases hers.. )
I will agree that if you buy and keep a car for ten years, you'll be much better off financially, in the long run.... of course, it's a really long run with a crappy ten year old car... lol
I am posting this as a public service announcement. It's the 2nd or 3rd winter you have to watch out for with OEM tires. Back to lurking for a few months.

I guess we’re the odd balls here because we like electric; probably because we both grew up with it. When we moved into our second house it had a top of the line gas drop-in oven. She just couldn’t get used to it so after about 6 months we dumped it for an electric. I ran the 220 line and she was her old self again. Just for the fun of it I asked a few electrical contractors what that would have cost me. I had quotes from $250 to $650. If I didn’t know how to do that the price for an electrician would have probably changed her mind about electric. She doesn’t know how good she has it.
When we redid the kitchen last year I asked her if she wanted to go with gas this time because the house is also piped for gas. Nope, she wanted to stay with electric and I couldn’t talk her into a convection oven either. The salesman at Sears said, “since you seem to cook a lot you’d probably like a convection oven. You otta try it”. I knew what she was going to say before she said it. “If I try it and I don’t like it will you take it back”? The salesman said, if you’re really dissatisfied with it, Sears will take it back”. Her reply was, “I’m sure it would do what it’s supposed to do but I don’t want to try something different after all these years”. Way to go dear, you just saved me about $650 that I can put to good use. Keep reading you’ll know why.
Now some car talk:
When I got in the Genny this morning the radio didn’t come on. For a second I thought they turned off my XM satellite connection but that thought quickly went away when I tuned to FM and still nothing. Tried AM and the disc player and that was dead too. This happened once before on a Saturday about a year ago and after a couple of restarts it worked fine until this morning. When I got to work I called the dealer and they said bring it in before the service dept. closed at 4PM and they’d get me in. I leave early and guess what, everything is normal but I go in just to see if they can find something in the computer. Nope, they can’t find a thing wrong (I figured that).
When I pulled up at the dealership I saw a black on black Equss right outside the door of the showroom. When I dropped off the keys to the Genny I see another one in the showroom, in a room all by itself, it’s a black on black twin of the one outside. Then as I’m looking at it I see another one outside, silver on black. They were all the Signature model, MSRP $58,900 (includes transportation). There were a few people in the showroom but a salesman comes over and says, “nice car, huh”. We did a little small talk and now since he knows I’m a Hyundai customer he says, “if you want to take the twin outside for a ride I’ll get the keys and you can go alone”. I told him I was just killing time while they looked at the Genny. He repeated the offer but I declined again. I asked him how many they sold and he said, “since we got them in last month we sold one and another one may be sold by the end of the week”. I then said, “does Hyundai really think they can compete with the Benz and BMW in the price range they have on the Equss since people that spend that kind of bucks, want the badge”. He said, that there are over 1100 on the road since they were introduced which is better than they expected. I guess time will tell but I think this is infant curiosity.
‘tjc’ while I was kicking tires I noticed that this car had a push button on the console for the “sport ride mode”. You probably wouldn’t like that but this car also came with Continental ContiPro Contact tires. They have to be better than the OEM Dunlops on the Genny, right?
When I got home early ‘you know who’ wanted to know what was going on. I told her to get her purse and I’d take her for a ride in an Equss. Yeah, she ruined it by saying, “you just got a car a couple of years ago. We don’t need another toy for the garage. So don’t get any ideas”.
Man, I’d really like to work on this for a while. To hear her talk before the Genny purchase, I didn’t have a snowballs chance in Hawaii of pulling that off, now look at me.

For months I've reading how you have your little woman wrapped around your 2nd smallest finger, jmonroe (Jim?).
But in my experience, women ALWAYS have the last laugh my friend. My advice? Don't get too comfy..
Don't ever say you weren't warned by your buds..
on a different note and am pretty darn glad I read it..
I had no idea that there is less heat in propane than natural gas. Great to know.
I do have experience with propane furnaces in very cold climates snuffing their own pilot. I also have a friend who has continual problems with his propane pilot going out also. The local propane experts could never find out why. Said "everything checks out fine."
One of the 2 times my pilot failed me, was after driving 3 hours northbound to my home, AFTER parking my big truck from doing numerous TO to Boston runs the 3.5 weeks preceding. Arrived home at 3am in the morning to an inhouse temp of 10 degrees
Wanted to have a shower..ya right...nothing. No furnace pilot. So of course no water. So the next day, I (as a claustrophobic person:( ) was on my back resoldering and replacing busted water pipes in the (only) 1.5 foot crawl space of my first home on my only 2 days off in 25 This was back in the early 80's. At one point I had to inhale to get over a ledge to get to a different spot. I cudda written a horror film after I finally finished. That first hot shower after I finished tho was pretty damn rewarding. Meanwhile, outside the mercury still hovered around the -20 range.
So no propane for me beyond BBQing my steak on the deck.
But the extra time to boil water with propane vs NG was educational. Thanks for that. Was it fezo? I forget...but thanks to whomever posted that as I had considered a propane stove to replace the electric to cook with.
Maybe you can drive by and stop in for a spur of the moment test drive, with her in the back seat. She might enjoy thinking about you chauffering her around town like a celebrity.
But in my experience, women ALWAYS have the last laugh my friend. My advice? Don't get too comfy..
It's not who laughs loudest...it's how hard I laugh. However, we do have a 50/50 relationship. I make it and she spends it. :surprise:
I also have a friend who has continual problems with his propane pilot going out also.
I didn't have propane but I had this problem with natural gas with the first house I had. It was new house so I called the builder and he had the rep for the water heater manufacture come to the house when his plumber couldn't find the problem. This wizzard couldn't find the problem either and put a small piece of metal on top of the frame where the pilot flame was. He said, "when the burner kicked on that mild explosion would blow out the flame". REALLY? I knew that but I saw that if the pilot flame didn't re-lite right away the thermocouple cooled and wouldn't allow the pilot to re-lite. He's the rep, ain't he supposed to know that?
Finally, I took the whole burner section out and noticed that there was a loose connection right at the pilot flame orifice nozzle. That orifice is way too small to have a leak at that point and the gas would flow out of the threads at that loose fitting rather than fight its way through the small orifice. When I tightened the nut at this fitting the problem went away forever. The smaller the orifice, the tighter the connection has to be, especially with low pressure.
End of lesson.

I wish i knew how to post a pic. I have this great (dating) joke on my fridge.. Your post puts me in mind of it...The caption says.."But what about our religious differences? I worship money and you're broke!" hee hee hee
Good to know about about the loose connection. If I ever venture in again I'll remember that, Jim. (I know you might be John or any number of j's, but when I see jmonroe, for some reason, Jim always comes to mind. Hope u are ok being Jim..
Wood (especially hard maple or oak or even a not nearly as hard, ash) will really boil water FAST btw..
on but that thought quickly went away when I tuned to FM and still nothing.
I have had that happen to me a few times on my bimmer. I start the car and the radio is completely out. Once I called and rushed over to the dealer so they could actually see I wasn't imagining it. They said I would have to bring it in because it would take a few hours to check all the electricals.
If I try restarting it won't come on. If I leave the car alone for an hour or two it fixes itself.
When I got in the Genny this morning the radio didn’t come on
You have the full "Tech Package" right? If so, demand the dealer look at the "TSBs" the 09s have quite a few problems with the system amplfier and there are known fixes for your intermitent problem. I can point you in the direction of some reading up on this topic if need be. The next time it gives you trouble try to drive right to the dealer showing them its not working. Whatever you do, when you get to the dealer DON'T SHUT OFF THE CAR, that resets the system.
I checked out the Equus a few weeks ago. It is certainly impressive. From what I have read it rides very plush and smooth like I would want. The suspension is adjustable (by the button you saw) so it is really the best of boths worlds. In Korea the Genny gets the adjustable suspension also.
They have to be better than the OEM Dunlops on the Genny, right?
I think Mickey Thompson slicks are better than the Dunlops (at least in snowy weather).
Good post on ownership costs. Many people don't have a clue about how much it costs to own and operate an automobile. That is why I don't get too upset about the cost of gasoline. The biggest hit is depreciation.
If you figured out your total cost of ownership and divided that number by the number of times you filled your tank over the ownership period, you would realize that every time you stopped at a gas pump it cost you $500. or $600. It could be much more than that or somewhat less, depending on your car.
(I know you might be John or any number of j's, but when I see jmonroe, for some reason, Jim always comes to mind. Hope u are ok being Jim..
I’ll have to be because that is my name but around here I use my stage name.
In my real walk of life I’d give anything to be called either of those two compared to what some have called me.
I told this tale a few years ago about my posting here:
I had this Edmunds forum pulled up and Mrs. j wanted to use the desk for a few minutes so I vacate the desk chair and I sit in the lounge chair in the office watching TV waiting for my turn at the desk again. She sits down, does some bookkeeping and as she looks up she sees one of my posts where I had mentioned her. She says, “HEY, this sounds like you. You’re ‘jmonroe’, aren’t you”? I did a dance around that but she has never truly forgotten it. Every now and then she says, “OK, jmonroe, what would you do about a situation like this, (name it, anything applies here) since you seem to know everything about everything”. Like I said, she never really forgot that. I wish I had an Elephant brain like that.

I know some people prefer leases. While patting the fine posters here on the back, I would say most in here know what they're getting in to by leasing.
I have spoken to way too many friends, and to my son's friends, who lease their cars. They always seem surprised in one way or the other regarding the lease.
Typical questions/statements:
-"Hey Mr GG, can you help me with my car dilema?" GG-"I'll try. What's up?" -"I leased this 'Hupmobile' and want to trade it in. The dealer wants me to fork over $10K or add it to the new car's payment. That's just crazy, don't you think?" GG-"Maybe. How long is your lease for, and how long have you owned the car?" -"I've had the car 18 months on a 48 month lease." GG-"suck it up because your hands are financially tied for another 30 months".
Bottom line, aside from the additional fees involved with a lease, you are still quite restricted in what you can do with your leased car, and when you can do it.
STOVES....awright, I'll jump in. I used to like gas way back when. Kirstie is right, though. They are a b!tch to clean. (insert sexist comment here) Since I've been single for awhile, I've not had anyone who would/could clean mine on a regular basis, either. That compounded the problem.
Gas has risen cost wise, to the point where I think the cost for gas vs electricity are just about on par with each other.
Add in, gas stoves usually cost more money. And, that with the smooth cooktops, electrics are way easier to clean.
Gas and electrics both have their unique quirks. Once you get used to them, either is good.
But, only having two in my household (3 if the girlfriend is visiting), I use a Breville toaster oven (same brand as the juicer) more and more. Plus, for veggies like potatoes, corn on the cob, squash, etc, it seems I use my microwave more. These things are wonderful for those times.....www.potatobakingbag.com.
In the summer, using my grill, I really only use my stove 50% of the time I used it even 5 years ago.
And yes, convection oven, be it toaster or full size, is good.
His boss asked him five times to remove it and he refused. Should he have gotten the boot because he was a fan, or because of his lack of respect for his employer? And since this went viral, he's been offered a job at a rival dealership and is being inundated with calls from Packers fans saying they want to buy a car from him. Maybe this was a genius marketing ploy on his part? :P
"...it's a really long run with a crappy ten year old car..."
My daily driver at this time of year is 23 years old. Now THAT'S crappy.
The one saving grace with an old car is the lowered expectations. When a tiny switch broke on my "new" car I was more upset than if the bumper had fallen off my beater. That's because I expected my new car to be perfect.
Everyone knows the agony of getting that first scratch in your good car but how many remember the 10th scratch on your 10 year old car.
Driving an older fully paid for car can be very liberating.

What a great story! The salesman and the boss are both in the "right" to some degree. The boss did warn him, and he doesn't want to upset customers. All salesman should be nutral in these situations, he might have some people who agree with him, but it isn't fair to the other salesmaen or the boss who wants to protect his interests.
Unfortunately, I think the boss had to fire the guy and let the chips fall where they may. If some morons want to support the guy by buying a car from him that is up to them.
It makes you wonder about people who would pay $30000 for a car to show their support for the guy....and travel half way across the country to do it.
I figure the guy is an idiot given the fact that he was offered the option of taking off the tie and refused. Looks like he may be a wealthy idiot for a while anyway.

When I did the restart a few times yesterday morning everything was still dead. That’s why I called the dealer but after sitting all day in the parking lot it regained its memory. I don’t think a car that will only be 2 years old in March should have dementia.
The world is getting too complicated
Yes it is and too many gizmos on a car is not good. I have this voice command thingy too (I’m sure you have that also) where you talk to your car and tell it what radio station to play, what number to dial, what color pants you’re wearing, etc. etc. If that thing dies I will never know it because I’ll be damned if I’m not going to start talking to a car now after all these years. Then again, maybe, if I talked to it yesterday it might have fixed the problem but something tells me that thing didn’t work either.

Gotta ask - is "nutral" the official Canadian spelling of "neutral"? I'm only asking because I've seen "nutral" in some of your previous posts, so I know that this isn't a typo.
I didn't check for a web in the furnace because it was in constant use (unlike a BBQ which might sit a few months). Surely a spider wouldn't try to do web with the pilot going? This was 30 years ago, so long before the days of electronic type instant pilots.
But I will remember the thermocouple if i ever go gas again. How do you check them? I wonder why the local propane expert didn't find a fault with it? Twice the pilot went out on me while I was away. And both times I called them and they said no fault found. Reminds of me what is commonly said at the service bay of a car dlr with a wty claim. The first time I was lucky and got home before the house had started to freeze. I bet i was within less than 8 hours though of damage like what happened the 2nd time.
driver....I agree with you. Who would travel a couple of states to support a guy who happens to support their preferred NFL team?
While I question the GM who fired Mr Packers Fan, I also question the employee who was fired. Let the guy wear his tie. If it's so "offensive" to Bears fans, I'm guessing another Bears fan salesperson would pick up his business.
Then again, the salesperson, stating that his tie was more important than his job....well, probably better to let him work somewhere else, since that does not show very good judgment.
The dealership is the sponsor for the Chicago Bears radio broadcasts. The Packers tie - and specifically the refusal to remove it when given the option - was a slap in the face of the dealership. I don't blame them.
I will say, however, that I would not have handled it that way. I'm sure they could've gotten a lot of mileage out of it if they treated it like a joke.

Leasing definitely workd for some people. I think kyfdx put it brilliantly a while a go when he said to think of leasing as another way of financing a vehicle. If you assume you are going to have a car payment anyway and can live within the mileage restrictions, then it is a good idea.
Take 2 buyers buying an identical 2011 Honda Civic LX from the same dealership on the same day. MSRP Including destination $19,305
Buyer #1 Purchases the car for $18,567 (Just took the truecar average price paid) + $1,114.02 tax (6% where I live in Connecticut) for $19,681.02. Buyer #1's payment on a 60 month loan (0% interest because I'm not smart enough to calculate interest) is $328.02.
Buyer #2 brings in the dealership's leasing ad ($69/month for 24 month with $1995 Down + Tax & a $595 bank fee) and tells the salesperson: "I want this car at this deal, but with $0 down & tax included into my monthly payments." Salesperson does some math and comes back to Buyer #2 with a payment of $152.13 + $9.13 tax (6% in CT) for a total of $161.26 per month for 24 months.
After 2 years, Buyer #1 has made $7,872.48 worth of payments while Buyer #2 has made only $3,870.24.
Buyer #1's wife has a baby 2 years down the road and she decides she wants a CR-V because of the 4WD and cargo room. Buyer #1 goes back to the same Honda sales professional (his name is Craig, coincidentally - LOL) he bought the Civic from 2 years earlier and declares his wife's wishes. They hammer out a fantastic deal on a CR-V & are given $12,000 for their Civic (They owe $11,808.54) and are happy because the car is worth more than they owe (It is a Civic afterall). Just depreciation cost them $320.04/month to drive. Not bad.
Buyer #2 has a baby 2 years down the road and decides she wants a CR-V for the 4WD & cargo room. She gives the keys to her Civic back to Craig not having to worry if her car is worth less than what she owes. Depreciation ($3870.24) cost her $161.26 per month to drive for 2 years. She also has an extra $158.78 ($3,810.72) in her pocket.

Yes, I do have the “Tech Package” but not because I particularly wanted all that stuff but if you got the V8 you pretty much got the fluff too. At least it was that way when I bought mine because that was the only way the dealers that I checked with had them in stock and since Mrs. j had to have the car in Cabernet Red Pearl , I got the whole works.
Since you offered and this is car related it should be allowed for you to link that TSB info here. So, have at it.

Kyfdx hit the nail on the head once again. Depreciation is THE SINGLE BIGGEST COST OF VEHICLE OWNERSHIP. Nobody takes that into account. That's why it drove me absolutely bonkers a few years ago during the "gas crisis." "Gas crisis" is in quotes just because gas was expensive, but there was plenty of it. People would take their perfectly good 1.5 year old $40,000 SUV (Now worth $20K & They owe $30K) & trade it in for a Prius (At full sticker).

is "nutral" the official Canadian spelling of "neutral"?
No, the Canadian way to spell neutral is the Canadian way it should be spelled. I thought the American way was "nutral" so I try to use the American spelling when possible. I have written "color" and n "neighbor" etc. I just looked up "neutral" and you do spell it the same way we do...which suprises me because usually the American way is the shorter faster way.
At least I don't use "bonnets" (hood) and "boot" (trunk).
And, that with the smooth cooktops, electrics are way easier to clean.
That is another reason why Mrs. j swears by an electric. We got one in ’98 and she will never consider anything else.
In the summer, using my grill, I really only use my stove 50% of the time I used it even 5 years ago.
I use the grill year round and have done that for many years. I have shoveled a path to my grill plenty of times over the years and just did it again on Sunday too. The steaks taste way better cooked on a grill and I throw on oak wood slivers for even more taste. The only time the oven broiler has seen a steak is when the gas runs out but I can’t remember the last time that happened. It has happened and even though the oven is self clean she doesn’t like that idea because I have spoiled her rotten over the years with my preference of how I like my steaks cooked.

. I have this voice command thingy too (I’m sure you have that also) where you talk to your car
I don't have that thank goodness. I can press the button on the radio when I need to. I have motors that make the headrests go up and down if you put the seat forward and the trunk makes whirring noises once you get out. Also, the windows come down a bit when you get out and go back up once you close the door.
In 10 years this car will cost a fortune to keep it on the road. Oh yeh, and there's the hardtop convertible roof...hopefully I will get a new one before it all starts to break down.
Also makes a great point. You have to be flexible when leasing. If Buyer #2 wanted another Civic when her lease was up, the "program" for the Civic from 2 years ago might be drastically different & cost her more money.
Isellhondas: When they ran that cheap V6 Accord lease, how many people took the same car 2 years later for more money, how many people took a 4 cyl Accord for the same money, & how many people told Honda to go pound salt?

But I will remember the thermocouple if i ever go gas again. How do you check them?
I should have mentioned that when my gas water heater had the pilot light problem the plumber that the builder sent out changed the thermocouple because that is the first thing that is suspect with a pilot light problem. But, like I said it was a loose connection at the orifice nozzle fitting.
I’ll field this question for the ‘old farmer’. He’s probably out in the lower forty clearing ground for his spring planting. At this time of the year with all the snow that must be there that has got to be a real b1&%$.
Anyway, one way is to heat the tip of the thermocouple with a propane torch and measure the milli volt output for quite a while making sure it has constant voltage. Since that is not very practical, because without having a continuous readout via a recorder to see if it is intermittent, you’d be standing/sitting there doing this test for the rest of the day. This is why they are usually just replaced because they are pretty inexpensive without the installation cost. It’s been a while since I bought the spare that is hanging near my water heater but I think it was something like $4.95 years ago. Since they have no shelf-life they are good forever.
I’ve told my son’s to get a spare too because you can count on them failing at some point and why be inconvenienced running to the hardware store when it happens.
Another no charge lesson.

I should have mentioned that when my gas water heater had the pilot light problem the plumber that the builder sent out changed the thermocoupler because that is the first thing that is suspect with a pilot light problem.
Thermocouplers don't cost much, but a simple cleaning of the thermocoupler with light sandpaper should do the trick... save you the cost ($100) of a plumber or heating and air tech having to come out and put in a new one.
The Whirlpool POC water heater I have had to have its thermocoupler cleaned a couple months ago. Pilot assembly had been under recall. I replaced it myself. The thermocoupler gets carbon deposits on it which keeps the sensors from reading the proper temp. The "computer" thinks the pilot light has gone out and cuts off the gas. That's my non-professional furnace fighting theory anyway.
Our furnace is in a downstairs bathroom, so it picks up a lot of dust and humidity, and its thermocoupler grows carbon deposits like oldfarmer does tomatoes. Two screws hold it in place, and it's a simple cleaning, so not a big deal. I usually have to clean it twice during the winter months.
Charge for this lesson... 50 bucks billed to your account. ahhhh what the heck, first one on the house. :surprise:
edited: Sometimes you can just relight the pilot light and it will stay on for awhile... that is if the thermocoupler is dirty. Eventually it will get so bad you can't even relight the pilot.
Thanks for this info. I will also tell my friend about it. He said he also had the repair man out numerous times for the same issue, unpredictable pilot. But since they are so affordable why didn't my guy suggest doing that? Twice? And maybe they did do that on my friend's I don't know but will be asking him.
So basically they are not unlike a temp sensor for an engine block to measure coolant temp...just a lot higher calibrated of course.
Who was it here wanted to quiet down their dishwasher, was it u jmonroe? I wrote up a pretty good pc with lots of info but didn't post it cuz wasn't sure anyone would be that interested. I still have it if u want it. Your comment about another "free lesson" made me think of that...all the free lessons I do, but no one wants to know. I love to learn and my basic nature is to readily share what I learned... but unfortunately I'm not very good at knowing when sometimes no one wants to know.
Hey, more great info. I love knowing how something works. I will definitely try sandpaper before replacing. Even if the part is only 5 bucks, not having to go get it and the whole inconvenience and time involved is where the real savings are.
And that explains perfectly probably why my friend's fails often too. I will ask him where his furnace is. Sometimes they have humidifiers installed right on the furnace which might be adding to the conditions for faster carbon build-up.
Great info thanks. Your next vicarious beer is on me. Or the real deal if we ever meet.
Unfortunately I have found out mostly the hard way. I have all kinds of trouble with my furnace in years past, where I had to hire expensive repairmen. After watching a few times I learned to do repairs myself. Had to come home from work a couple times because the pilot light had gone out and wife and kids were a bit cold in 10 degree weather... toaster can only put out so much heat. :P
I've had the heat exchanger replaced, themocouplers bad, lines fouled, gas valve bad. Just got a new Goodman furnace a couple years ago. It's been a lot better than the Janitrol.
I attribute most problems to not the greatest of brands (Janitrol and Goodman) but mainly because the furnace and water heater are in a frequently used bathroom. The high humidity can't be good for it.
it should be allowed for you to link that TSB info here. So, have at it.
I looked it up and I was mistaken. The TSB was actually for 14 speaker Lexicon in my car not the 17 in your car. I do know that on another forum (Genesis specific) their were several people that had theirs replaced under warranty. Remember one thing too that although most of the car is warrantied longer the stereo/nav is only 3/36.
Who was it here wanted to quiet down their dishwasher, was it u jmonroe?
Nope, it wasn’t me that asked that question.
FWIW, when I installed a replacement GE dishwasher a couple years ago (due to a recall of that model by GE), before we redid the kitchen in January 2010, I took the insulation blanket from the original GE and put it on the replacement and that thing was so quiet Mrs. j didn’t believe it was running after I put it in. It was just that quiet. I wanted to take the insulation blanket from the replacement GE and put it on the new Kenmore when we did the 2010 upgrade but I couldn’t do that because I would have had to hammer it in place with all the extra insulation. :surprise: The new Kenmore was pretty quiet right out of the box. Good thing because ‘you know who’ has been spoiled with a quiet dishwasher.

The TSB was actually for 14 speaker Lexicon in my car not the 17 in your car.
This is classic of going overboard. Does anyone NEED 17 or even 14 speakers in a car? For all I know, half of those 17 don't even work. What am I supposed to do, crawl all over that car with my ear next to everything that looks like it MIGHT be a speaker. I don't have time for that and waxing too.
Sorry for the confusion.

It would be fun to look at one of those old manuals these days. So many things are made for world markets these days so those things don't happen.
We have to be careful when we buy kids books from England because they might call a truck a lorrie or something, but, even most publishers now use terms accepted everywhere in the world.
"...I'll field this question for the old farmer..."
Good answer. Yes that's how the pros do it, replace parts until the thing works. You can also look at the tip of the thermocouple and if it looks "burnt" that's a sign. I also use loud swearing and kicking of the unit but I've had mixed results with that.
The spider is only a problem where the unit is not run for a period of time like a BBQ or a greenhouse.

Actually, I did have an '02 CR-V that was paid off for the last 2.5 years... Of course, with no payment, my wife got a more expensive car..
So... if you trade every five years or less, you are always going to have a payment, unless you can pay cash.. and, even then, you have the exact same costs.. depreciation, finance or opportunity costs, etc, etc..
It's really a fallacy that if you pay cash, you don't have a payment..
(truth disclosure: I paid cash for my current used car, and my wife leases hers.. )
I will agree that if you buy and keep a car for ten years, you'll be much better off financially, in the long run.... of course, it's a really long run with a crappy ten year old car... lol

So the next day, I (as a claustrophobic person:( ) was on my back resoldering and replacing busted water pipes in the (only) 1.5 foot crawl space of my first home on my only 2 days off in 25
So no propane for me beyond BBQing my steak on the deck.
But the extra time to boil water with propane vs NG was educational. Thanks for that. Was it fezo? I forget...but thanks to whomever posted that as I had considered a propane stove to replace the electric to cook with.
So why are you lurking & not participating?
It's not who laughs loudest...it's how hard I laugh.

If you figured out your total cost of ownership and divided that number by the number of times you filled your tank over the ownership period, you would realize that every time you stopped at a gas pump it cost you $500. or $600. It could be much more than that or somewhat less, depending on your car.

I have spoken to way too many friends, and to my son's friends, who lease their cars. They always seem surprised in one way or the other regarding the lease.
Typical questions/statements:
-"Hey Mr GG, can you help me with my car dilema?"
GG-"I'll try. What's up?"
-"I leased this 'Hupmobile' and want to trade it in. The dealer wants me to fork over $10K or add it to the new car's payment. That's just crazy, don't you think?"
GG-"Maybe. How long is your lease for, and how long have you owned the car?"
-"I've had the car 18 months on a 48 month lease."
GG-"suck it up because your hands are financially tied for another 30 months".

But whatever you do, don't wish for a female brain even if it is elephant-like.
I will say, however, that I would not have handled it that way. I'm sure they could've gotten a lot of mileage out of it if they treated it like a joke.

No, the Canadian way to spell neutral is the Canadian way it should be spelled. I thought the American way was "nutral" so I try to use the American spelling when possible. I have written "color" and n
"neighbor" etc. I just looked up "neutral" and you do spell it the same way we do...which suprises me because usually the American way is the shorter faster way.
At least I don't use "bonnets" (hood) and "boot" (trunk).

I don't have that thank goodness. I can press the button on the radio when I need to. I have motors that make the headrests go up and down if you put the seat forward and the trunk makes whirring noises once you get out. Also, the windows come down a bit when you get out and go back up once you close the door.

You'd have loved the owner's manual for my 69 Volvo 142. Back then they only had one English language manual and it was British English.
The directions for changing a tyre were hysterical - get the spare tyre out of the boot. To remove lugs turn anticlockwise....
And that explains perfectly probably why my friend's fails often too. I will ask him where his furnace is. Sometimes they have humidifiers installed right on the furnace which might be adding to the conditions for faster carbon build-up.
Great info thanks. Your next vicarious beer is on me.
Or the real deal if we ever meet.
gas line to pilot may need to be blown out... pilot assembly cleaned out as well.

That's OK. I've had a few senior moments lately too.

It would be fun to look at one of those old manuals these days. So many things are made for world markets these days so those things don't happen.
We have to be careful when we buy kids books from England because they might call a truck a lorrie or something, but, even most publishers now use terms accepted everywhere in the world.

But like the Prius buyers you only pay the loss when you sell, just like the stock market.
If I hadn't sold that Lucent stock I never would have lost 95%

Good answer. Yes that's how the pros do it, replace parts until the thing works. You can also look at the tip of the thermocouple and if it looks "burnt" that's a sign. I also use loud swearing and kicking of the unit but I've had mixed results with that.
The spider is only a problem where the unit is not run for a period of time like a BBQ or a greenhouse.
