the salesman said the LG would grind up anything you put into it.
The salesman said? Haven't you learned anything here?

I didn't think he would lie about something like that. We bought it at Sears and as far as I know it did grind everything. He said it would grind up glass if it got caught in the grinder. I didn't test it. I think he was truthful, and there comes a point when you do have to trust a salesperson to some degree.

But, as I said, they real problem is why didn't they have a light on it that tells you the dishes were washed? The LG was excellent in every way, but that was a big fault.

    >Maytag ... does everything well, competent,

No. My Maytag refrigerator has had two defrost thermostats. And a starter unit that is on the outside of the compressor. It breaks and the compressor motor can't start; it tries and tries and cuts out due to overheating.

The simple thermostat that tells the circuit that the cooling coils have been defrosted and are above freezing should be simple to build. If I didn't do this stuff by my own diagnosis, this side-by-side would be in a junkyard. It's about 9 years old. I put an aftermarket thermostat in place and wired it into the circuit; Maytag wants us to buy the heater coil and the thermostat as one unit wired together.

The repairman-owner of a Maytag store said the compressor was one of the good ones, despite that the capacitor for starting quit. Otherwise, we would have done more looking.

Worse than that, the circuit diagram included with the fridge (up with the temperature controls and defrost timer in the roof) was the WRONG diagram. It was for the electronic defrost timers that people were having trouble with. Mine had the manual 8-hour timer which works, like, well, clockwork, and doesn't fail. When my symptom was failure to defrost, the electronic timer was indicated as likely failed part and was on my circuit diagram. Included wrong circuit diagram!!!

Yeah.. Whirlpool owns Amana, Maytag, Kitchenaid.... and a whole bunch of other stuff....

Frigidaire owns a bunch of the cheap brands....

Other than that, it's mostly imports... (although almost all refrigerators are probably made in China)

    I learn so much here.

we have a kenmore, probably a upper middle range one. noise was more of a concern than features. probably about 8 YO at this point, and never a problem

I am the one that does the dishes (wife cooks, it is safer with this arrangement). And no food goes into the machine, Half the time, I can skip the DW entirely they get cleaned so well.

And in 8 years, I am pretty sure that I have only ever used the water saver setting. For all I know, the other 8 buttons (pot scrubber, etc.) don't evenwork!

it is like having a gizmo loaded BMW or MB, and just doing everything manually.

As Imid mentioned, Whirlpool is in his neighborhood and a little ways north of me. I don't know what they do up there now. But, they used to do all of the engineering and design work up there, as I had an engineer neighbor who used to commute and hour each way to work for them.

Don't remember the details, but they got into some legal trouble over their products, and then financial trouble ensued. Don't know their status these days.

Appliances? I really don't have a preference. I have a Samsung fridge and DW. The fridge keeps my food cold, the freezer keeps it frozen. The DW washes the dishes, and is pretty quiet. So, as long as they're doing what they're supposed to do, I'm OK with them.

I know when I was shopping, it was clear that Kenmores were actually LGs as they didn't do much to disguise them except for the brand.

driver....a guy who used to work with me had this BMW-fetish, similar to yours :P . He had a 6 series convertible, I'm thinking it was a 2006, maybe?

He had a world of issues with it. Weather like we have now (about 6 inches of snow on the ground) rendered him immobile, and the 6 was his only car. He couldn't afford anything else with the payments he was making on the 6. He'd never admit it, but he also had some issues with it that were, fortunately, covered under warranty. It seemed like it was in the shop a lot, though.

Nice looking car, however. Road in it a few times. Typical BMW interior (which are all more or less about the same, regardless of model). Pretty quick, too. Fun in the summer. Not so much in winter.

..a guy who used to work with me had this BMW-fetish,

Thanks for the info GG. To tell you the truth, I doubt if I would get a 6 Series...I know there are more problems than average. Also, I like a convertible for now, but since we can only use it for about 5 months in ideal conditions I only want a hardtop convertible.

Also, if another car suited me more I wouldn't hesitate to change. I like Audis and Mercedes because they are more luxurious, less handling and performance. As I get older I am sure my views will change as to what I will want next. Maybe, it will even be a Buick (ha ha ha).

I can understand how you feel on hardtop convertibles but I kind of like ragtops. I remember the NY Times review of a Bentley convertible and they asked a Bentley rep why it didn't have a hard top and the guy said they wanted to retain the romance of the sound of a cloth top in the rain. I agree with that. Sounds like you are in a tent.

I think it is the idea a convertible should have a soft top...it is more traditional.

The nice thing is people know you actually have a convertible, and the BMW 6 Series roof is a unique design...the window is indented and the roof has a wing affect.

Last night on Barrett Jackson they had a Ford Fairlane Skyline with the full roof that went into the trunk in one piece. There was a metal box about the size of Mini Cooper in the trunk for your luggage so it didn't interfere with the roof.

When I was a kid some guy with one of those Fairlane Skylines (it was brand new at the time) came visiting my neighbor up the street. He showed off the whole roof deal, having it pop into the trunk and come back out. I was probably 7 or 8. I thought it was the best thing I'd ever seen!

He said it would grind up glass if it got caught in the grinder.

I think we all know that ain’t true but a good garbage disposal can.

    Here’s the tale:

When we moved back to the Burgh from SC and finally bought a house in 1998 I did a complete kitchen redo, everything, right down to a 1 HP Kenmore disposal. About two months after we’re in the house my sons and I are watching a football game (after dinner) in the family room next to the kitchen. I heard a racket like I never heard before, coming from the kitchen then silence. A couple of seconds later the same sequence then a couple of seconds later the same thing. Guess who pops in and says, “I THINK :surprise: something fell into the disposal (no sh1*?). It must have been a juice glass”. I go into the kitchen open up the sink cabinet, pull the plug on the disposal, undo the drain and connecting ring and turn it over onto some paper on the counter top. Out pops 2 pieces of glass less than 2 inches long, about 7 or 8 chips about the size of an index finger nail and 2 tablespoons of white sand. I said, “hell, you shoulda turned it on a couple more times and I wouldn’t have had to miss the game. It could have finished digesting this with no problem”.

I thought that thing would be a goner in another month or two for sure but it kept on ticking (not like the Maytag timer I just spoke about) till we redid the kitchen last January. You better believe I bought another 1 HP Kenmore disposal to replace that one. I gave that one to my niece. FWIW, she says it’s the best disposal she ever had.

Car thing…disposals are a lot like cars; you can never have too much HP. Now, do you really think you can get that kind of chopping power from a dishwasher? :confuse:

$37,400 but the commentators said it would have fetched more if it had the original whitewall wheels and hubcabs.

The Skyliners were produced from 1957-1959. They were way cool at the time and I think they still are.

They often caused trouble and they were a nightmare to work on. I heard the Ford mechanics just hated them. They used seven motors, countless relays, limit switches and miles of wiring. Everything had to work perfectly.

Trunk space was limited to that small box and it was a big hassel to use the trunk especially in bad weather. Ford offered as a (very rare) option, a fitted set of luggage to fit that box.

A few years ago, I was at a car show when a guy got his stuck in the mid position. I watched as three other Ford guys tried to help him get it fixed.

The curses didn't help and I don't know if they ever got it fixed that day.

Back in 2007 I covered the world and US intros of the E93 and got to drive a 335i automatic back home from Miami(BMW NA forgot I had the car so I ended up driving it for 3 weeks instead of the usual 10 days). The top was a fun conversation starter; there weren't many retractable hardtops back then. I almost caused a couple of accidents retracting the top while stuck in traffic...

burner...driver....in all frankness, the 6 'vert owner wasn't/isn't the sharpest pencil in the pencil box...and that's even with an MBA from Stanford. If I mentioned his name, I think most around these parts would recognize it as he is somewhat "known" in the business community (and, no, I won't mention his name). When I said business colleague, I use those terms very loosely. He was sort of an icon of the way to blow through lots of (inherited) money with nothing to show for it.

I recommended the same thing you guys did...."get some winter tires". According to him, any car that costs as much as the 6 did, shouldn't need winter tires. Again, not very bright.

I will say, I do like the looks of those 3 Series 'verts a whole lot more than I do the 6 series.

One final note, took the TL out in about 5-6 inches of snow last night before the plows hit the streets. Not even a little hiccup. It did great, even with the OEM tires. Remind me not to entertain any thoughts of replacing it for awhile. :)

That's a good line....during normal use you might never use the additional horsepower, but it is nice to have it there if you need it.

I did believe the salesman when he said the LG would chew up glass. I just didn't feel like testing it though.

Are you people so jaded you wouldn't believe a salesperson if he told you a dishwasher could chew up glass. Since this was Sears, and not Hot Shot Appliance Mart, I believed him. I think that is something he wouldn't make up, but I should have asked for a demonstration.

Most people misuse their garbage disposals by putting too much stuff down them. They are really designed for those few bits of food items that are left behind, not to dump garbage. Same with the built-in disposals in dishwashers.

I learned that from talking to a guy who worked at a sewage treatment plant. He said garbage disposals cause them tremendous grief because they have to remove all that stuff and it really gums up their system.

Good point RB. My car was useless in snow....but with snowtires it is in the top 20 percentile I would say. My wife's 3 Series has all wheel drive, but next year she will get snow tires too.....if it is a choice between which car to drive in snow it would be the one with snowtires. Snowtires plus AWD would be incredible.

Moron is the right word, buy snow tires now or do a few $1000 damage to a nice car!

A salesman at Sears told me they had a guy do a demo for just them after hours once. He put a clear glass, clean plate, and a whole chocolate cake in one of the top Kenmore Elite dishwashers and ran it through it's cycle. When it was done, the cake was gone and the dishes were spotless.

Next time I go to buy a dishwasher, that is what I am going to take with me.

I like Sears for that kind of stuff, Kenmore's are usually pretty good plus they have other top makes, and they are a pretty trustworthy establishment.
They make it easy to get delivery too....they know how long it will take and at what time they will deliver.

We got our Fisher Paykal (New Zealand) washer and dryer at Sears. They are neat units...slightly smaller than most brands, but my wife likes that though the washer is completely energy efficient, it opens from the top - it is the only one that does that. She doesn't like loading from the front. When it spins it sounds like a jet taking off!

At one time (back in the early ‘70’s), the community where I live now which is the same place I have always lived, except for when we lived in SC, had a “grinders fee” (not the type we know of from these forums). It was very nominal (I think $3 a month charged to the water/sewage bill if you had a disposal) which was intended to defray the extra burden that was placed on the sewage system. After a few years they did away with it because the sewage system was upgraded.

A guy that lived just a few doors up the street was pretty high up with the water authority and when I asked about the fee going away he said the system can now handle almost anything from neighborhoods but they still charged commercial establishments. He said, “don’t worry about it, the new system can handle it”. I was glad to hear that and have never heard of any problems with the system we have now.

We throw every food item imaginable down that thing. That 1 HP Kenmore handles everything. Even banana peels, which they say you shouldn’t put down those things. I can’t tell you how many full watermelons rinds (cut into chunks that fit of course) have been tossed down that thing and it just gobbles it up. About the only thing we don’t use it for is the husks from corn and large bones. Everything else is fair game.

A great story that I enjoyed reading again.

God only knows where Sweebie was during that time.

Now, a different story that I've probably told before. I story that still haunts me.

I once knew a guy named Roger who was the senior LA Paramedic at that time. He was one of the original guys who began the program and the most senior.

Roger had a beautiful daughter, probably about 19 who was engaged to be married in a couple of months.

A drunk driver broadsided the Porsche her financee was driving and killed them both.

Roger got the call and was first on the scene not knowing it was his daughter and her finance until he arrived.

Being the true professional he was, he directd his first attention to the person most in need, he driver. Both died on the scene as Roger frantically tried to save their lives.

The Black Lab that was riding in the car was never found. He wasn't in the wreckage nor was he ever located.

I still think of that horrible phone call I received.

Boy, we really are getting a lot of mileage out of the kitchen appliance discussion, which I really am enjoying.

Like with my cars I seem to own the low to mid-line brands with some success and failure. Our Maytag washer and Whirlpool dryer were purchased together in 1989 and still work flawlessly--although I know they aren't as water or energy efficient as new models.

We have had mostly GE and Maytag kitchen stuff, but were talked in to Whirlpool's "high end", KitchenAid when we bought our new house in 2006. Interestingly, we have had significantly more trouble with the KitchenAid stuff than we had with our other Whirlpool stuff. The slide-in Gas Range needed to have the cast iron grates replaced because of a defect, and despite adjustments by a technician it rattles from time to time when the oven is in use. The refrigerator just threw up an ice maker to the tune of nearly $200 (in fairness, this was our first frig. with an ice maker) and our over-the-stove microwave has a glitch where once every 8 to 10 times we set the cook function the actual microwave (heating) element doesn't kick in. It's gotten where we can even hear the difference and stop, and then re-start the cook function.

Interestingly, the only appliance we haven't had trouble with is the dishwasher and it's made by Jenn Aire, not KitchenAid. If you look at (and believe) CR, KitchenAid is a much more trouble prone brand than its less expensive siblings. Our experience has certainly borne that out.

My only complaint about our garbage disposal is that it is much, much louder than the one my brother installed for my folks at their house.

Don't think Edsel ever made one, although there have been several Fords with Edsel body conversions.

I had a 57 Skyliner in high school. Definately a head turner back then, although I always thought the top looked awkward when up. It actually had a huge trunk with lots of room when the top was up and mine was loaded with camping gear many times. You just had to be careful not to damage any of the electric/hydraulic parts when packing. And obviously it had to be empty (except that box) to put the top down. I would have kept it if I thought it would be worth something some day.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Yeah, Edsel never made a hard top convertible but in 58 the lower end Edsels were essentially Fords with fancier bodies. I could see that someone with the knowledge and a whole lot of patience could create such a thing. After 58 all Edsels were For based.

Maybe it was a 58 Edsel Pacer which was available as an actual cloth convertible on a Ford based car. That or a 59 Corsair. After 59 only 76 Edsel convertibles were built. I can't imagine anyone cannibalized one of those.

I had hoped the owner of that Edsel would be hanging around his car that day but he wasn't. Definatly unique.

What I didn't like about the retractables was how boxy the trunk looked from the rear. Although they aren't nearly as valuable, I think I would take a Sunliner over a Skyliner. not as unique but less trouble and better looking.

Tallman, thanks! Just have to remind myself of that from time
-to-time as my eyes wander. I really do like this TL...probably more than any other car I've owned over the past 20 years, or so.

Was talking to the girlfriend last night on the phone. She lives in TN and got hit with a little snow (which brings them to a halt). She drives an Avalanche. As capable as that vehicle is, when she's up in the SW OH area with me, and hits a little snow, she seems to cut her MPH in half. She said that there were people all over the side of the road, believing that since they had 4WD vehicles that they were totally immune to snow.

Can't change the laws of physics, no matter what you drive.

isell....speaking of cruises, I'm already planning another. We're thinking of hitting up that new HUGE ship called the Allure of the Seas, probably right after kids go back to school for Spring Break. It will be about $2K for both of us for a week.....all inclusive (except alcohol). Good deal!

    >Jenn Aire, not KitchenAid

You do know that JennAir and KitchenAid are both owned by Whirlpool, who also makes a lot of the Kenmore line?

I think JennAir was the top line for Maytag? I'm so confused since it's been a while since we shopped for anything to cross check model names. One of the companies had Roper as a base line and the other had a base model line as well, and I'm thinking the name was Bryant.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. They are truly part of the family, and it is so painful to lose one.

Also, thanks for posting the link. That is an amazing story, and it's great that Sweebie made it back to you for his final year.

Just last week, my niece was visiting her parents in another city and her dog somehow got out of the yard and ran away. She is a very sweet dog, but very skittish. It has been 4 or 5 difficult days for them. They are doing everything they can to find her, including ads in the paper, craigslist, and facebook. Like Sweebie, she is tagged and chipped. We are keeping our fingers crossed.

    J--

I'm hoping for the best for your niece and her dog. There are plenty of decent people out there as we found out after Sweebie disappeared. With the tag and chip your niece has really done the best she can to ensure a positive outcome. I think pretty much every vet checks for chips now as did the shelters we contacted. We also put up posters at gas stations/convenience stores along the interstate near the accident site and put an ad on petfinder.com. Interestingly the woman that found him had seen none of that despite living nearby, but we felt much better for doing it.

It seems with all the GPS technology readily available on phones, cars, even watches, that a miniature location device for cats and dogs can't be too far away, especially if someone can do it cost effectively. Anyone here up for Lo-cat or Lo-dog?

    Also with fingers crossed,

    Gogiboy
