We had one inch yesterday where i live in North Carolina. It was gone by early afternoon. This is not enough of a reason for you to continue living in the Artic.

Oklahoma here. 14 inches of snow, 7 days later another 14 inches of snow.

My town night before last hit -28 degrees. Little town 20 miles away hit -31 degrees. Broke every record for cold. +50 today, warmer tomorrow, 70 in a couple more days.

Years ago a friend mentioned this area having the worse weather in the US. I questioned this and he gave a great argument for his statement. 105 degrees and more in the summer, sub zero winter temps. Sleet. Snow blizzards. Freezing rain of over 1 inch that tears power lines and trees and even pulled a TV tower down. High wind with the hot and cold weather. High humidity with the heat and cold. Allergy capital of the world. Floods wash thru town. Drouth burns grass brown. A couple years ago, grasshopper invasion in south part of state with pictures showing them eating wood fence posts. Tornados are common place.

Yesterday we took the Saturn to the shop to have the wheels balanced (they started to shimmy while driving), we left the car there and went for breakfast and then go looking for a car to replace the Saturn as I was starting to give it doubts. The whole ideal was just to look at a few sedans and then go from there.

Well we ended up at a Hyundai dealership to look at the Sonatas, and we test drove a nice white one that they had for sale as a demo (had around 6K miles on it). Just being curious we asked for the price and the salesman took us back to his office and worked up the numbers. He gave us a sheet with the out the door price broken down into all its components. The car had a MSRP of $21,695 and the price he gave was $19,800 for the car along with a $200 appearence package and a doc fee of around $150 (highest allowed by law).

Well at this point we weren't really ready to make a deal but I took the page crossed out the $19,800 and replaced it with $18,800, crossed out the $200 for the appearence package (no real value to me) and changed the doc fee to $65. He said he didn't think it would be accepted but he would try (not like a refusal would bother me at this point).

As we were alone in the office when he was checking with the sales manager we got a call from our mechanic. It seemed that the wheels being out of balance wasn't the only issue. There was problems with the tires and a tie rod needed replacing along with a few other things. Cost to get the car road ready was close to a grand, now we are getting more serious about getting a car.

The salesman came back agreeing to the numbers and me and the wife had a long talk about the deal. I gave her three options: 1.) do the deal with the Saturn as the trade in. 2.) look more and get either that car or another or 3.) spend the bucks for the repairs and hope the Saturn will go at least another six months (it was starting to give us issues). AFter discussing things and what the payment would be with several differing downpayments we decided to go with the deal.

So basically we got the car for Edminds TMV less 33 cents per mile used as a demo.

We had gone to our bank a week or so earlier to get a quote on interest rates knowing that the Saturn would need replacement soon so we gave that to the finance guy to see if he could beat it. He was able to match it with our bank so we went with that. We were offered Gap insurance and the extended warranty but turned it down, no pressure to buy either but was given a second chance at the warranty at cost.

So they got the car ready I drove the new car home as the wife drove the Sebring home. We dropped the Sebring off at the house, got our checkbook, and the title of the Saturn and went to pick up the Saturn. Dropped the Saturn off with its title and the downpayment and went home in our new car.

As for the Saturn, its a 1998 with 157K miles suffering from a few issues (as noted above needed almost a grand it work). Kelly Blue book puts tha trade in value at $500, which I asked for and got with no problems. It was a car that I wouldn't let my wife drive any more as I was sure that it would give up the ghost soon.

Well back to your consumer reports forum. ;)

    Oklahoma here.

    And you stay why??

My SIL lives in OK near Ponca City. I visited once, in August, it was 115 degrees. The ground was cracked and it hadn't rained in 2 months. And she chose to move there.

    "...We are in St. Petersburg..."

We love that area. We sometimes borrow my BIL's condo in Largo. St. Petersburg pier is a nice place to walk and to take pictures of the city but the whole downtown area is beautiful.

We spent a lot of time on the beaches west of St. Pete's. Maderia Beach and Treasure Island are fun. Try Bubba Gump Shimp reataurant or the Friendly Fisherman at John's Pass.

And next time, take me with you.

While I think I like the design of the Optima more than the Sonata

I agree with what you said...it was a previous model of the Optima, and I would compare them both too....and I think it would be a difficult decision as to which I would prefer.

I tend to like Kias a little more than Sonatas too, they are a little more traditional in their styling....meaning they appeal more to us older people.
The newest edition of the Sonata looks like a mini Mercedes, but the Sonata looks very classy in it's own way.

Difficult decisions if I had to choose. One thing I really like about the Fusion is it is substantial........it is a lot of car for the money. Lots of room, very comfortable, nice big hood to look out over. But the Kia was pretty solid and the engine ran very nicely, it was also a terrific value.

    If only Ford would put the SHO engine and AWD in the Fusion and top it off with a six speed manual;

Now that would make one great car! Even a turbo on the 4 would make it into a real enthusiasts car.

I agree about the Taurus.................just too big and heavy and boring looking. I looked inside one and it looked pretty big and dark inside with those tiny windows - and the rear window is really small and way too high. The Fusion has a nice bright design and is a very practical size. Lots of room even in the back seat.

"...Dropped the Saturn off with its title..."

Is there something I'm missing? After you had the deal done on the new car you brought the hooptie Saturn into it? How did the salesman react to that? Had you already signed the papers to buy the new one and did they have to draw up new ones with the $500 trade allowance?

Just wondering. Sounds pretty clever to not confuse things with a trade before you get a firm price but I would think the salesman would be peeved.

Snake, I think you posted your story on the wrong forum...this is the consumer products forum.

Actually, that is a great sales story and very well told. Sounds like you did very well too....it is practically a new car and you got it at a very good price, without a lot of hassle....seems the dealer really worked with you.

The ads on Tampa TV say the Sonata is the #1 selling car in the Tampa area. And when they flash 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on the screen that is pretty impressive.

Congratulations! Should make an excellent car!

We'll keep those places in mind. We seem to meet friends in the other direction more...Sarasota area, and there are some excellent restaurants there too.

One thing we want to try is the Majesty Gambling Boat at John's Pass. We don't normally gamble, but they give you Free, parking, buffet, drinks (while gaming) and entertainment.

I guess I could blow 5 bucks on a slot machine for all those freebies.

With the weather you are having...you should get yourself over to Niagara Falls or Buffalo airport and get a $79 flight to St Petes! ;)

    Is there something I'm missing?

During the negotiations he asked if we were trading in the Sebring (%^&* no, that car is just to much fun with the top down), we mentioned that we were wanting to trade in the Saturn and told him the details and said that we would take $500 for it (KBB value). He agreed sight unseen.

Seeing that it was 13 years old and was starting to die a slow painfull death I knew it had little or no value to it.

Thank, so far so good. It has a nice ride, handles well. Its acceleration is pretty good for a 4 banger, today coming into work I put the transmission in manual mode and while I didn't floor it I did give it a good spirited acceleration shifting manually. I was impressed at its response.

It has Bluetooth and my wife just could stop using it to call people. I am not a big talk on the phone type person but I have to admit that it is neat.

    Ok, now I understand.

BTW, junkie cars have a lot more value than you'd think. A friend of my son junks cars for a living and he will typicaly get $500 at the junk yard crusher. A lot more can be made by the parts yards who strip off pieces one at a time.

A CAT alone can be worth $100.

I've owned whole cars that cost me less. How times have changed.

I have Bluetooth in the Genny and didn't think much of it until the phone rang a few times, then I realized the convenience and safety of it; not sure I'd want another car without it.

Congratulations on your new car. That model is really pretty, especially in white. White will even make the car look bigger than it is. My first choice in the SRX was white, but my wife wanted the black. I know that you are enjoying the new ride. Hope it gives you many miles of driving pleasure.

Since you rent cars each time that you go to Florida, why not rent an SRX and see how you like it? Also, you could rent a Town Car and see what I used to talk about all of the time. You might even rent the new Explorer and give us a report on it.

Dang! It was a very sick but funny Craigslist posting for a bashed in van, price $300. The seller said a tractor trailer hit him in Wal mart's parking lot. He went on to say it was a great van for picking up kids and he had left some candy in there. He also had a sign that said "free puppies" written in spray paint and a matress in the back.

I can only hope the whole thing was a joke. :confuse:

Nope, I wasn't. The wife mentioned MB and I mentioned the price of MB then she mentioned getting a used one and I found a 2007 C230 with around 30K miles for under $20K. But in all honesty, it didn't handle and ride much better, if at all, than the Sonata and I love the look of the new Sonata, plus it has a bit more in the area of equipment.

I would love to do that. But it would probably cost at least double. Thrifty had the lowest prices for Tampa airport, and the Fusion special is almost 50% less than any other car. I see alot of SRXs down here, as well as lots of Cadilacs, especially the big ones that they put the half vinyl roofs on, and loads of Lincolns....they love those big cars down here.

I am still thinking about how I am going to take a Town car for a test run, as I said I would. I saw one in a neighbors drive and I was thinking about asking the visitor. Then I saw one at a limo service, and I was thinking of offering the guy $20 to drive it around the block.

One day I will figure out a way to do it. I like the looks of SRX and CRTs and I think I would like driving them. Maybe one time I will go all out and leave my practical side at home. I did see lots of Mustangs, convertibles and coupes at the Thrifty parking lot...that was tempting too.

It was a minor problem, but annoying, and could have been very annoying.

Remember, these cars don't have gas caps...youo just put the nozzle in.

I filled up with gas, and the next day, a warning shows up "GAS FILLER IS NOT CLOSED PROPERLY". So, I pull over first chance I get. Walk back, put my finger down in the filler hole, it clicks a little metal object that seems to close off the filler pipe.

I left the motor running, but when I go to get back into the car, all the doors locked! I was locked out! Fortunately, my wife was in the car, so I could get back in.....but if I was on my own I would have been locked out, with the engine running, and the cell phone inside the car.

    Not great planning.

What airline has $79 flights to St. Petersburg? The best round trip price I could find last year from Albany was $400 and that was to Tampa. Of course it was Christmas time.

I've seen $99 one way rates to Orlando but never to the Tampa-St. Pete's area.

At $79 it might be worth the 51/2 hour drive.

Snake - great to hear about the Sonata. Nice deal on a nice car.

Explorer - now we're talking my kind of Fusion. Well, I like roaburner's more but yours one could actually buy!

I went to visitdirectair.com and leaving on this coming Fri was about $170, but if you come back in about a week there are $99 flights - that is Buffalo to Tampa.

Weather has been in low 60s the last few days, 65 today, 70 on Monday and each day increasing to 78 by Saturday, when we leave

I went to the Pittsburgh auto show today with both sons, DIL #2 and grandson #3. Son # 2 is in the market for a van to replace his aging 2000 Explorer so this auto show had more meaning than the usual tire kicking that was done by him in years past. He’s leaning towards a Kia Sedona because of its value but he’s got an open mind so he looked at all vans. I asked him as we were leaving which one was on top of his list and he said he’s still leaning towards the Sedona.

I couldn’t get over how everyone (not just my family members) who were impressed with the Kia Optima. Lots of people commented how they liked the looks of it and when they saw the price for the top of the line model at just a little over 27K, they liked that even more. I heard one guy say, “I’m not interested in an Accord or Camry now, not after seeing what you can get on that car at that price”. I mentioned that he’d have to test drive one to know for sure. He said, “I’ve driven both the Accord and Camry, I have an ’06 Accord right now, so I know about them and I can’t imagine that the Optima test drive will sour me on that car”.

But that’s not why I’m posting. When we get home I see a few pieces of ice in the driveway that I wanted to break up before going into the house. It was 52 F here in the Burgh today and it was pretty easy scrapping the ice away with my ice chipper. OK, now I have the stage set for what happened when I got into the house about 5 minutes after the family got there.

As I’m closing the door from the basement to the kitchen and start heading down the foyer to hang up my coat, I heard the tail end of a conversation that went like this:

Mrs. jmonroe: So I take it that you liked the car show and found something that you’d like to buy. (talking to Son #2).

Son #2: We’re still thinking about it.

Son #1: It wasn’t a total wasted trip because Dad did more than kick tires. He put down a deposit on that Sonata you liked. He liked the specs on the turbo enough to do that. :surprise:

Mom: No he didn’t, the checkbook is in my purse. I just used it, so don’t start anything like that, OK.

Son #1: Mom, you don’t need a checkbook today, we're in the new Millennium and have been for more than a decade. Credit cards do everything that checkbooks used to do.

Guess who comes stomping into the foyer, with hands on both hips, just as I’m closing the closet door? Yep, you got it.

Mom: Did you put a deposit on our credit card for a new car? :(

Me: Who said I did that?

Mom: It doesn’t make any difference you said it. Did you or did you not put a deposit on our credit card for a new car?

Me: What if I did. Would that be so bad? You do like the Sonata, right?

Now I’m just about doubled over laughing.

Mom: Can I get a straight answer out of you?

    Me: OK, No.

Mom: I don’t know whether to believe you or not.

    Me: Believe me.

    Mom: About which answer?

As I’m walking into the family room to join the family who are also laughing by now.

    Me: Take your pick.

Finally, DIL #2 says, “I didn’t see him do that (she should have stopped right there) but I have to admit that he wasn’t in my sight the entire time.

Granted, I might have thrown a little bit of gasoline on the fire, but still, she should know me better than that by now. She’s gotta know that I would never do anything like that without her permission, right? :shades:

I truly am ROFL....but I really feel sorry for your wife.

She must have a really good heart to try to keep things on an even keel in the Monroe house....and yet all these family members give her a hard time.

I hope she gets her new car soon, and she goes and picks out exactly what she wants.

. . .why does anyone even live there?

My experience has been that people who live in the places that many consider one step above hell are there mostly because their ancestors were (& are) still there, in numbers.

I'll be in AZ until I'm dead (or nearly so) because our children & grandchildren are here, not because I like it. There are dozens of places I'd move to tomorrow, if I could.

Don't be so quick with the praise. I'm the one that holds this place together. ;)

I'm all for that as long as it's the Sonata turbo in Radiant Silver with black interior. Don't worry, it'll have the bun warmers. :)

If the wife tells you to get what you really want instead of settling, do it. I should have listened to mine when she gave me the "ultimatum", since it would have probably cost less in the long run, and saved me from at least 3 purchases (trying to make up for the previous one!)

I also saw the optima at the car show. Extremely impressed by it. Love the design, and the interior was great too. Nice firm seats and everything!

actually, the only other mid sizer that impressed me was the new Passat. That was sweet. Not as nice of an engine choice though (less power, and worse MPG).

well, speaking of the upcoming passat, at least that one comes with a stick (no clue how well optioned though you can get that).

and even better, a diesel with a stick. Hmmmmmm.

Like father, like sons---poor Mrs. JMonroe. She should take her check book and purchase her new dining room furniture. She's earned it with you three.

That is probably very true. We live 70 miles from Buffalo, and I often wonder why anyone would live there, when if they are American they could move to a much nicer city.

But, family means a lot, and sometimes people adjust by making their own life and friends, and activities etc.

Too bad you can't trade with Snake, he would love to live in AZ.
